I'm a Mac - my bro's a PC...

I got my iPhone on iDay - and LOVE IT!! No problems to speak of - that weren't handled great by Apple - and it syncs perfectly with iTunes, iCal, iPhoto, and the Address book on my MBP.
I got a call from one of my good friends today, asking about the iPhone. He's seen mine - and digs it. (He uses two cell phones, and an iPod now.)
I guess what I need to know is how different is the syncing on a PC? Where does it grab the photos? Contacts? He's gonna ask me - as he's "technically challenged."
(The guy needed me to help him set up his iPod!)
I know he'll love it for his business - but I want to make sure that I have the answers for him when he asks. (and he WILL ask!)
Thanks in advance!

Well, if he is using a PC, then he would get his contact information from either Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Address Book. Photos are synced from a folder that you identify on the computer in iTunes. If there are pictures on the camera roll, then when plugged into the Windows computer, it will be identified as a digital camera, and he can get the pictures from there.
Hope this helps you.

  • How to restore my deleted videos from my mac book pro

I had mistakenly deleted some of my iphone camera movies stored on my mac book bro, Can anyone help me to restore it back, if there is any free software.
    thanks & regards

One way to recover some real estate on your boot drive is to use Monolingual to remove all of the unneeded language modules. Just do not remove English or American English. Also do not use any of the other features of Monolingual. I saved nearly 1 GB of space on my MBP the first time I ran it.
You can't restore to an external HD. You could copy your current library to the external, make sure it's operating, delete it from the boot drive, enter TM and restore the library to the boot drive. When you've finished with the book, follow the directions in Old Toad's Tutorial #9 - Archiving an iPhoto 6/7 Book for Ordering Copies at a Later Date or #9a - Archiving an iPhoto 7/8 Book for Use/Editing at a Later Date so you can cull down the library so it will fit on a DVD/CD for archiving. Then delete the library from the boot drive and move your working library back to the boot drive.

  • 2GB to 4GB:  Will there be improvement?

I have a 2GHz C2D Mac Mini with 2GB of RAM. It's been working fine but I've been using Aperture lately and it brings the machine to its knees. Barring getting a new Mac, if I went to 4GB, will there be a noticeable improvement?
I know about the issue of addressing 3GB, so I'm fine w/ the 'wasted' 1GB as long as I see a performance improvement. Just trying to figure out if this is worth the investment.

Oh, and IMHO, a nice big external desktop Firewire HDD, 7200RPM or higher, will trump any internal HDD you put in the Mini, no matter how big and fast. The power and speed of a desktop HDD will even cancel out the fact that the FW port is slower than the internal SATA. A friend of mine actually took the time to measure it, and found this to be true.
An internal SSD could be even faster, but they are simply not cost effective, plus you have to use an external for storage anyway, since a 500GB SSD will set you back at least a grand. If you have that kind of money to spend, you are better off with a Mac Pro, bro'!

  • TS3477 I can not get my second display to work

HI i have a mid 2010 mac book bro 13", I had it connected to VGA display and now it doesnt display anything or identify the second screen. This happened over night. please help

Maybe the VGA's power supply failed.  I've gone through many VGA's where that happens (bad luck?).
Does your vga have a power switch that lights up?  Can you feel any heat above the vga monitor?  If yes to all of this, check your connections.
Note, these things are not cost effective to repair.  Just get a replacement or a flat panel monitor.

  • My mac bro pro does not shows my usb or hard disk?, my mac bro pro does not shows my usb or hard disk?

    hey guys help me

Nobody can.  You did not provide any details.  It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.

  • New mac mini, resolution incompatible with TV

My shiny new mac mini just arrived today in the mail. I hooked it up to my Emerson 27 inch 720p tv and booted her up. I got the grey screen, then the apple, then a spinny wheel of white lights, then "Please change computers resolution".
This is my first boot and the machine only comes with the onboard HDMI port and the HDMI to DVI adapter. I have no DVI monitors, and my only HDMI monitor is my TV.
Safe boot doesn't work, single user mode doesn't work. Both just throw the same error, safe boot runs a progress bar for a bit before doing so at least.
Apple support is closed right now (***).
My bro and I are Linux admins so we got into the shell and tried editing the com.boot file to change the resolution, but that didn't seem to do anything.
All the forums I've referenced say to install tools to solve this problem, but that's not helpful unless I can get in the first time. Also unhelpful are the people who say buy a new TV or monitor, which cost more then the machine.
I need this machine to boot exactly once into the GUI so I can set up logmein, VNC, and ssh. This is a dev box so I don't care about seeing it on the TV.
Can anyone get me into the GUI one time?
Since it's brand new, it's running Lion which I've been having endless issues with at work.

It sounds like the new Mac Mini has HDCP enabled (as it is on the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros).
This is a kind of copy protection, and will not allow HDCP protected content to be played on an analog source.
A tool like http://www.hdfury.com/ will take the HDCP stream, and convert it to an analog stream. It's perfectly legal.. and will extend the life of older TV's (manufactured before 2002).

  • Macbook Pro story... Win to Mac user Help needed!!

I have been a windows user for many a year now, always satisfied with the OS but never pleased. Too many things go wrong with windows and I hate all the system registry bull. That and the dreaded viruses and popups.
I have spent a couple of years now looking across the water at you mac users, since my brother purchased his mac mini I have been droolling over the design and look of the macs. When Apple released the Intel based machines I pricked my ears up hoping that Vista would support EFI so I could dual boot. This was dashed when it was anounced that Vista would stick with BIOS.
I was back to square one then. You see I wanted the design of mac and the stability of OSX with the backup of windows. Being a school teacher I need windows to sync with the interactive whiteboards and other kids based programs.
My prayers were finally answered when apple released Boot Camp. It was beyond my dreams that apple would take such a bold step and open up there computers to the likes of me.
So after hours of pondering and reading through the posts on this forum I finally took the plunge, rushed down to my apple store in Brum and with the educational discount walked away with a Macbook for £1636.68. I was pleased and poohing myself at the same time having spent that kind of money (being a student teacher means money is tight!).
So I got the thing home and was amazed at its design and looks, it truely is a fantastic looking machine. Turning it on for the first time I was very apprehensive, all the posts about whine and heat had made me very nervous. After going through the setup and taking half an hour to get my WIFI working I finally started to play with it.
The whine was there and the heat, two things that I had been dreading, the heat did not bother me one bit. It was hot, very hot in places, but how often do you touch the bar across the top of the keyboard? I think this is a good place to allow the heat to disipate, I have worked on laptops where your blood starts to boil beacause the area where your plams rest is so hot. The whine did annoy me, it seems so strange that my computer made more noise when is was not doing anything compared to when it was. The photobooth fix worked perfectly which I figured i could live with until a proper fix is released. Plus I have read that windows does not have this problem so it must be software related.
As I was going skiing for a week i figured it would be ideal for me to take my computer to get to grips with OSX. Thats what I did and can I tell you that I was more than impressed, I really did not understand the comment people (including my bro) mad,e, 'it just works'. Until I spent a day using it, programs open up seamlessly and you can have several high powered programs running at the same time with no lag at all, fascinating.
I came back from holiday (last saturday) loving my new machine and ready to install boot camp plus start transferring my old files. Then, and this is where it gets interesting, I read a couple of posts about apple's Higher Education site and the amazing discounts it gives.
I can tell you that right now I am pretty ****** off, before i bought my mac I intentionally asked the guys in store if there was any way I could get a macbook for cheaper, online or anywhere. I was told that the maximum discount i could get was 8% off the comp and 17.5% off applecare. Now I discover that if i had purchased through my uni, I could have got 15% off my Macbook and applecare for only £60! Can you see why I'm a touch upset?
Any ideas on what I can do? I have had the computer for less than 14 days, I love it to bits and don't really want to take it back, plus if I do will I be charged a restocking fee? It seems it would still be cheaper to do this but what do you guys think? thanks for your help.
The reason for the long post is i wanted to get across how pleased I am with my macbook pro and OSX, if anyone has any doubts to buying one don't they are fantastic and OSX is a breath of fresh air, just remember the Higher Education store online if you are a student!

    Another update guys.
Went into the apple store in Birmingham, UK, which is where I bought it. I explained the situation calmly and they were very sorry for the misunderstanding. They instantly said that they could not match the offer that found on the higher education store.
The option I had was to keep the machine or they would give me a full refund, even though I had had it for over a week and it had a scratch on the case! Was a little shocked that I was not charged a restocking fee! Anyway, now I have no mac at all and it will take a couple of days for the money to go back on my card. I was very sad to see it go, I had really grown attached to it and am now stuck on windows again!
Can I just say what fantastic service apple provide, I love the idea of simply taking your computer into the store to get a fix rather than Dell which is online only.
Now I have a problem, I like the new 17" but think it will be too big to lug from home to school, I would like the dual layered superdrive though. Do I wait for the macbook pro update? Will they come down in price as the 17" is cheaper than a matching 15"?
    Help!

Firstly, what is the source of the 10.6.4 disc? Is it the original installation disc for your MacBook, or one 'borrowed' from another computer?
It isn't the retail version, because that's 10.6.3.
Assuming it's the correct disc (i.e. the one that shipped with your Mac), you need to boot from it again.
    OK the language page.
From the installer screen, ignore the continue button, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need.
Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When the Macintosh HD volume appears below the drive name, quit DU and see if you can then install.
If the screen after the language screen doesn't show the menu bar, it may be necessary to use another Mac to do the job with the MB in Firewire Target Disc Mode. If it won't boot in TDM, or the MB doesn't have FireWire then it's getting very difficult.

  • Mac Pro for Video Editing?

So I have an awesome Mac Pro computer at work all well equiped with all the bells and wistles for video editing and now I'm looking to upgrade my machine at home which is currently just a macbook pro with a second monitor.
My one concern is that the Mac Pro has not been updated in sometime.  Obviously the mac bro route would be best for me being in video production so I can easily upgrade component with the never ending technology that keeps changing.  Now the concern about buying a Mac Pro right now is the possibilites of it being upgraded.  Now I understand things are obviously always being upgraded and things are never up to date for very long.  However I'm concerned that if in like 3-4 months they came out with something and changed the decision that I maybe screwed for upgrade components along the way.
Just thought I'd get some insight from some of you and what your suggestions maybe?
    Thanks in advance.

budget, time-line, stomach for 1.0 revamp (every new model, 2012 could be 3x), lack of Rosetta of course.
production never = bleeding edge, go for a mature well tested proven design - expect to see firmware change, compatibility issues, and 3-4 months for a unified build and drivers rolled out, no?
a nice $2200 "hold me over the hump" for the next 6-12 months for now, W3690/X3690 DIY (the w3680 3.33 6-core is mere $620)
no easy answer that I see with all the products Intel has on their plates.

  • Linking my imac to macbook bro

    hi there
i'm a student and i would love to connect my imac to my laptop ( macbook bro) ... what i mean by this is to have the same files, safari fav ... etc on both so when i go to university with my laptop i will have the same info from last night search or study done on the imac ? ....... would it be possible ? PS: i do have a wifi net on the house connecting al three computers to the internet ( imac, mac mini and macbook bro )
    best regards to all

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As long as your iMac is an Intel iMac, you can use the Migration Assistant via Firewire. If your MacBook Pro only has Firewire 800, Firewire 800 to 400 cables exist if your iMac only has 400. iMacs which are Intel come in one of two variaties:
    1. All are Intel.
    2. iMacs which look like this , one must either look on the base while it is turned off, there is a label underneath the base that says an EMC# of:
    2104, 2105, 2110, 2114, 2118, 2111, 2133, 2134
or use Apple menu -> About This Mac. When doing Apple menu -> About This Mac, if it says G5, or the EMC# on the base is different, it won't work with the Migration Assistant. You'll have to consider this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=0
And only run up to 10.5.8 on the iMac. 10.6 will not run on G5 iMacs.
