I'm a neophyte to iTunes, so ...

Based on my readings, iTunes creates a library, in addition to the Folder I have on my external HD >:My Music, correct?
If I try to play something without my HD connected, I get alot of !'s surrounded by a grey circle, which iTunes says it can't find.
When I locate the song, iTunes duplicates it in my HD and in the iTunes folder?
With 4K plus songs, some in .wav, .mp3, or .wma, it is tough to keep the whole thingy clean.
What is going(?) on-operator headspace?
Thanx,
Shagman

Yes. There is an itunes library.itl file, which is the library.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
And there is a folder that holds the actual music files - on your PC you've named it exHD:/My Music.
+If I try to play something without my HD connected+
Don't do that. How can iTunes play a file it can't find? Your exHD MUST be connected before you start iTunes, so it can find the music files.
+When I locate the song, iTunes duplicates it in my HD and in the iTunes folder?+
Because you have the option to "Copy songs..." turned on, probably.

  • IPod NEOPHYTE needs HELP!! (iTunes library transfer to iPod)

I recently upgraded to iTunes 7.01, **but this problem remains (b4 and after upgrade)! Can anyone tell me why (and how to fix) my iTunes Library shows aprox. 2800 songs (aprox. 15 GB), but regardless of how many times I connect my iPod to my PC (to charge, etc.)-- my iPod only contains/displays aprox. 2600 songs (13+ GB)?!?! What do I need to rectify this? Thanx in advance to all you much smarter technophiles!

did you check your itunes options to see if you
    have
selected the 'Only Update checked songs' option
    and
if some songs in your itunes library are
    unchecked?
if this is so then unselect the 'Only update
    checked
    songs' option. Hope this helps
    (2) YEAH, I checked and this option is NOT checked, so that's Not the problem
    Thanx though!

  • Is there a suggested directory structure for iTunes?

Is there a suggested directory structure for iTunes? I have moved my library around several times (what with new machines, etc.) and I find that I have two app libraries in different locations and I think it is the problem behind a refusal to sync issue I'm having with my iPad.
Any help would be gladly appreciated!
    Luke
    (Screen grabs a great help)

I'll see your Tb and raise you some - the truth is, almost every major revision and data migration from MBP to MBP and now back to a MP has caused replication of folders in the strangest of places, none of which I have consciously created - I mean, why would anyone except out of self-focused spite want to create three different sets of apps folders - to say nothing of the interminable Compilations folders that sprout from no where in particular!
I could understand the issue if I was careless or a complete neophyte,  I only moved to the Apple platform about 6 years ago, (even though I've been using the platform since 1987) when I went to work for the company.
iTunes I think is a little like a cat - it recognises my lingering, subyle antipathy and rolls all over me just to mess with my head!
Thanks for the information, none-the-less, greatly appreciated.

  • The best conversion of avi to iTunes

I have avi movie files and I would like to convert them to mp4 (or something else) to make it works in iTunes. I have the VisualHub and QT Pro, but every time I converted it the quality was little bit worst (really just a little) than the avi file. And if the quality was probably the same, the new file was 2 times bigger. How can I convert it? Or what is the best setting up for converting?
    Thank you very much.

I've been using cucosoft video to iPod converter. I think it's great, very easy and has lots of options. I've taken DVD's and it will convert them directly to MP4 and you can select options of iPod Touch, nano, etc. It is one step and even a neophyte like me can use it. I had a bunch of Northern Exposure AVIs that I had converted from my DVD's and it converted them in a batch so I didn't have to do each one separately. Just load them and walk away.

  • Why doesn't/When will Apple TV support 24/192 audio streaming from iTunes???!  this is needed badly.

apple tv truncates and resamples all files from itunes to 16bit/48k.  this is losing a large amount of audio information and very unwelcome for even neophyte audiophiles, just those of us who enjoy good music.  as music lovers we are forced to hop skip and jump around itunes and use other audio interfaces that don't play well with airplay or itunes and aren't nearly as flexible.  (like sonos or naim, or similar)  all just to get our higher rez music files to play at their intended bit depth and sample rate.  i have tried many solutions for this issue and still the very best would be to have apple make apple tv (which many of us use to stream audio) and the airport express output digital audio at full rates, ie. 24/192.  even 24/96 would be a very very welcome upgrade.
SO, APPLE, PLEASE PLEASE.  LET'S DO THIS.  WITH THE VERY NEXT ITERATION OF ATV.  PLEASE!!!!
    thanks.

You have posted to the iTunes Match forum which your comment is not related to. You might want to do a search on the iTunes for Mac forum to see the previous discussions on this topic.
Long story short, though, you are not addressing anyone from Apple here. You may submit your polite feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html

  • ITunes And MP3+G files

Can anyone tell me how I can view and/or play and/or manage my ipod/iphone 3gs stored MP3+G files from my computers desktop. As they appear invisible to iTunes.

Thank you for your quick response.
I've installed an extra (internal) hard drive and have divided it into several partitioned drives. It is the G: partition that I save all of my audio files and to where I changed my Itunes directory. I don't think "G" was ever named anything else since it is what I named it when I installed (and partitioned) the drive.
All of my Itunes program files remain installed in the C: drive.
I hope that all of this makes sense. If you can't tell, I'm quite the neophyte. Please be patient with my learning curve....

  • HT4972 HELP ON NEW IOS FOR NEOPHYTE USER!!

I meant to rate this article 1 vs 5!! Not enuf info for total neophyte. Do I need a PC to update iOS on my iPad?? (then what good is it!?) how do I save my downloaded media content??

If you are on iOS 4 then yes, you will need to do the next update by connecting to a computer's iTunes - when you've done that update and you have iOS 5+ installed (the current version is 5.1.1, so that is what you'd be updating to), then you will then be able to do future updates directly on the iPad (you will get a Settings > General > Software Updates option appear on the iPad).
To update to iOS 5.1.1 you will need the latest version of iTunes on your computer - you can check if your computer's iTunes is up-to-date via, on a PC, 'Help > Check For Updates', and on a Mac 'iTunes > Check For Updates'
When you have that installed, connect the iPad to it and copy any purchases off it via File > Transfer Purchases - that will copy your iTunes purchases to your computer, which will include music, apps, ibooks, tv shows, films (but not films rented directly on the iPad, so you will need to watch them first). You may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well. Then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You should probably also copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • Access music from husband's itunes account?

I have an iPhone 4S using my apple ID. All of our music is stored on my husbands laptop under his apple ID. I'm a neophyte-- how can I get our music on my phone to hear when phone and computer aren't both at home?  Do I need to switch the ID on my phone? If so, how, and how do I not lose my pics and apps?

Here's the approach I recommend: You and your husband should keep your separate Apple IDs, and simply ask your husband to grant you access to his music.
If, for example, you and your husband currently use separate computers to synch your respective devices with, then on your computer, you would open iTunes and in the menu go to Store > Authorize this computer and have him enter his Apple ID and password.  Then, all his songs would be playable on your devices.
If his songs are not currently on your computer, you would move them there.  Type Help > Share Your iTunes Library in iTunes to learn how.
    I hope this helps.

  • Three movies I bought from iTunes this morning do not show up on the 1st Gen AppleTV.

I understand some file formats are not compatible with AppleTV (1st gen) but these films were purchased directly from iTunes.  One would assume they are formatted properly to work on Apple equipment, yes?  Previously purchased movies show up on the AppleTV just fine, so I'm not sure what's going with these three.  They were from the $4.99 Sci Fi collection:  Enemy Mine, Dune and Terminator 2.  Oldies but goodies.  The iMac, where the iTunes Library lives is used to stream the content to the AppleTV, and everything that is in my Library appears to be available for streaming, except these three films.  Any advice?

I have now restored Factory Settings on the Apple TV. Looked promising until iTunes hangs everytime I tried to enter the podcast page of the sync options. And I get errors that my newest movies, created in Final Cut Pro X with the Share with 720p Apple Devices export settings are not compatible with Apple TV.
    Unbelievable.

  • How do multiple family members use iTunes.? One account or multiple?

How do multiple family members use iTunes. One account right now but apps gets added to all devices and iTunes messages go to all devices.  Can multiple accounts be setup and still have ability to share purchased items?

    Hey Ajtt!
I have an article for you that can help inform you about using Apple IDs in a variety of ways:
Using your Apple ID for Apple services
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4895
Using one Apple ID for iCloud and a different Apple ID for Store Purchases
You can use different Apple IDs for iCloud and Store purchases and still get all of the benefits of iCloud. Just follow these steps:
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
When you first set up your device with iOS 5 or later, enter the Apple ID you want to use with iCloud. If you skipped the setup assistant, sign in to Settings > iCloud and enter the Apple ID you’d like to use with iCloud.
In Settings > iTunes and App Stores, sign in with the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match). You may need to sign out first to change the Apple ID.
    Mac:
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in Store > Sign In. In iTunes 11, you can also click iTunes Store > Quick Links: Account.
    PC (Windows 8):
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in the Control Panel. To access the iCloud Control Panel, move the pointer to the upper-right corner of the screen to show the Charms bar, click the Search charm, and then click the iCloud Control Panel on the left.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes. In iTunes 10, select Store > Sign In. In iTunes 11, click iTunes Store > Quick Links: Account.
    PC (Windows 7 and Vista):
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Control Panel > Network and Internet > iCloud.
Enter the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes 10 in Store > Sign In. In iTunes 11, click iTunes Store > Quick Links: Account.
Note: Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID for your iTunes Store account, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days. Learn more about associating a device or computer to your Apple ID.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden

  • I click on itunes but doesnt open and says send error report or dont send

i click on itunes but doesnt open and says send error report or dont send

You will need to provide more details as we cannot see your computer screen. Does this happen every time you launch LabVIEW? What version of LabVIEW are you using? What version of Windows? Does LabVIEW crash? If so, what were you doing at the time it crashed?

  • Itunes wont open and shows error report.

this is what i get when i open it. it was working fine last night. i opened it and it said updating library, but then i played music without a problem. this morning i uninstalled quicktime cause i never use it. so i think that might have messed it up. so i uninstalled everything and reinstalled itunes 7.2 and now i get this.
    http://img118.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitledra4.jpg

iTunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback. So it's best not to uninstall it if you want to use iTunes.
When that message you're getting cites that "Offset: 10004000", almost invariably it's caused by a broken QuickTime. So let's try swapping that out again, this time applying some additional explicit precautions.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • How can a family of 6 share the same itunes library?

My family has a major problem on our hands. We are new to ipods and itunes. We have 1 itunes account. My sons are too young to have their own accounts. They are too young for a credit card, and can't have a paypal account until they're 18. We want to keep our music separate from each others. How do we do this with only one library? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Go Buckeyes47
    Dell Dimension 2400   Windows XP

One thing not mentioned is that if you decide on the multiple user approach, you can have your music folder in Shared Documents so you only store the tracks once.
Each user is free to choose which of those tracks they want in their library.
There is an Apple help article on multiple users.

  • How can I Migrate/Split itunes/icloud account for a large family now that they have family sharing

Ok, now that Apple has finally come out with family sharing I need to get things sorted out and I think it is going to be a mess. I have 6 family members (my spouse and 4 children) all sharing/using one itunes account. For parental reasons this made perfect sense. Now with the the advent of family sharing and such we have alot of sorting and migrating to do and I am very unsure how to go about it. Here is what we have.
    Myself - I have a 64GB iPad 3 and a 64GB iPhone 5
    Spouse - 64GB iPhone 5
    Children - x4 16GB iPhone 5C (pink, blue, green, and a yellow)
We have had one itunes account now for several years, we used to have x4 16GB iphone 4's and a 16GB iPod touch 4 so we needed it to be shared at the time. We all have different Game Center ID's and Facetime/iMessages are all setup to the phone numbers (aside from mine which also uses the itunes e-mail). We currently have 1 upgraded icloud account with 200GB of storage on it (love the new tiers). So here are the questions.
    1) How do I go about using and isolating all the devices so they can all use the iCloud storage? Right now if I try and setup backups by device under the what to backup there is no simple "Full Backup" option, they have all the categories separated. I cannot backup my daughters contacts without forcing a merging of them and so on. Same thing with Documents and Data. Would I need to setup a different iCloud account for each device now?
    2) iTunes Music/App purchases. Now that they have a family sharing function I am assuming it would be a good time to separate all the devices (aside from my personal iPad/iPhone). If I understand correctly we need to setup a new itunes account for each and link them with family sharing, does this then allow us to disperse/move items from a singular to the multiple account (at least a one time option to move around) or would it simply be shared off the original account? My daughter for example will be 18 next summer and as such no longer under our care. How do we move her items to her account? She has a lot of purchased Music. Now keep in mind I am talking about an account for someone who was 12 when she had her first device and as such needed to be under her parents.
I just want to state that repurchasing things is NOT an option, and to be frank,  according to Canadian laws pertaining to *licensing* we actually own the product if we paid for it and have the right to transfer the ownership thereof. This issue went through the courts regarding used copies of OEM editions of Microsoft Windows several years ago and they closed the legal *license* vs ownership separation.

Go to appleid.apple.com to manage the ID, sign in and select to the Name, ID and Email Addresses section, then change the birth date on the bottom right.  At the present time you may not be able to enter the correct birth date, but others have had success changing the year to 2000, or the date to 1/1/2001, both of which will have child ID status.
