I'm  a new bie for JAVA Development

Hi All,
I'm going to start JAVA development as my full time so far I was in support. I have worked with the basic level of JAVA as a support engineer. I have read Kathy, Sierra's Head First JAVA and the SCJP preliminary exams books. I wish to know for what books I can go on to read next. Seeking for friends's and experts suggestion before I move to buy.  Your suggestions and ideas are welcome.
Thanks
Mohammed@@

Hi Mohammed,
for starters it's Java (no acronym). Books are a very subjective thing. Have a look at the ratings and comments on different books on amazon, visit a local bookstore and flip through a couple of books. Nobody here knows what you'll need int future.

  • Source Code Control for Java development in 6.20

I am new to Java development. How do you control source code (versioning/transport) for Java development with the base R/3 is 6.20. I believe Java Development Infrastructure (JDI) is only available in 6.40. Is this the correct statement? Anyone that has work on 6.40 with Java can explain?
Let say we have this setup:
    Applications are in 6.20
    Portal will be EP 6.0
Do we need Web AS 6.40 to develop Java for Portal with base R/3 of 6.20. Or we can use Developer Studio to create Java accessing R/3 6.20 and display in Portal 6.0. If this is the case, how do you manage transport is you are not using JDI in 6.40.

    Hi Nablan,
I believe you are development J2EE applications. JDI only runs with WebAS 6.40 which supports J2EE spec. 1.3. The developed J2EE archive will not be able to deploy to WebAS 6.20 which only supports J2EE 1.2 spec. So if you want to deploy the created software build from JDI and deploy it to WebAS 6.20, then the answer is unfortunately no.
But, if you just want the Portal be able to display your application in an iView inside, then maybe you can just develop and deploy your application to the WebAS 6.40 system. Then create an iView in your EP to point to the app in the 6.40 system. That way your app will not need to deploy to WebAS 6.20.

  • Oracle database 11g certification for Java developer

    Hello,
I'm Java developer, OCPJP 6 ( Oracle Certified Professional, Java Programmer +6+ ) and
I decided to pass exams: 1Z0-051 and 1Z0-052 to get OCA ( Oracle Database +11g+ Administrator Certified Associate ) certificate,
but I need some advice, maybe i should seek other certificate, that would be more valuable for Java developer, than OCA.
    Thanks for advice.

The answer of whether a particular certification is valuable depends on you, not the tests themselves. The Oracle Certified Master for example is an extremely prestigious certification, and I have considered seeking it at some point in the future to improve my professional credentials. However, the same certification would have absolutely no value to my wife, because she's a homemaker with no interest or intent of ever working with Oracle.
Using an example a little closer to yours, only reversed --- I work as a DBA and PL/SQL developer. On several occasions I have dabbled with Java, and took a couple of classes when I worked for Oracle. I could code in Java if I had to, but wouldn't really be good without a lot of practice. However, I've never really had a sufficient need in my work to dig in and really practice enough to use it. I considered going for the Oracle Java certifications as a means of kick-starting that and getting to the point where it was really a viable option in my development. Ultimately I decided not to because I've been working with Oracle for better than fifteen years and there has never been an occasion where I really felt a need to know Java. If I were to spend a bunch of time improving my Java skills just for the certification, there's no guarantee I would ever use them after that.
Coming back to you -- if you already need SQL and DBA skills in your work, then those certifications should be of value to you immediately. If you think that you might work (or want to work) more with SQL and DBA-level skills in the future, then they should be of value to you in the future. If you won't use the skills now or ever, then the exams do nothing but add a line to your resume (which still has value, but you must determine how much).

  • Database access tool for Java Development

    Hi,
A couple of days back, our SAP's database (MSSQL) was corrupted and downed the Java Stack.
During the Java development, normally after a newly created table was deployed via Java Dictionary, Java developer will access the database via the MSSQL Enterprise Manager to view/delete/update data. Unlike the ABAP development, all database access was done via SE16 in SAPGUI. It was believed that the Java Development kind of direct access to the database via the MSSQL Enterprise Manager was causing some MSSQL tables to be corrupted, and thus downed the Java Stack.
    1. Is there any tool like SE16 to access database during the Java Development?
    2. If no, what kind of recommendation/tool to access database for Java Development?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    julius

    Julius,
There are no industry recommended open source DB tools.
Normally it depends upon the developer preferences that how he/she wants to see the tool usability.
I can suggest you to go through the below link:
    http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=SQL+Tools
You can find many open source SQL tools, which you have to test and select one among them.
I can suggest you to use:
    1) TOra
    2) Easy SQL
    3) SQuirrel
"Choose a Tool which is easy to use and efficient, Dont worry about Look n Feel"
    Best of Luck

  • Flex for Java Developer?

    I am working on flex 1.5 from last 7 months.Ealier i hv
    worked on Java (1.5 Yr)
I hv created an application in flex sucessfully.
    My Qtn is:
Whether i have to continue with flex or move to another
    technologies like Struts etc.
Because i have nil knowlwge of FLASH.
    or
I hv to start learning FLASH MX. Is it necessary for
    Flex/Java Developer.
I am comfortable with action script if uses for Business
    Application but
unable to produce better designs using it.
    Please Suggest.
    with Regards
    Vinay

well vinay if u r thinking about -- Flex Front End to Your
    Struts Applications
    then ,,
Struts is an open source framework that facilitates the
development of web applications based on Java servlets and other
related technologies. Because it provides a solution to many of the
common problems developers face when building these applications,
Struts has been widely adopted in a large variety of development
efforts, from small projects to large-scale enterprise
    applications.
Although Struts greatly facilitates the task of developers,
it doesn't do much to improve the end-user experience: the
end-result is still an application delivered in HTML and using the
    traditional HTTP request/response mechanism.
    Developers—and organizations in general—are
increasingly looking for solutions to provide their applications
with a more engaging user experience that overcomes the limitations
    of HTML.
Macromedia Flex is a presentation server that addresses this
requirement and allows developers to build a new generation of Rich
Internet Applications (RIAs) that combine the usability of desktop
applications with the reach of traditional web applications.

  • New Features for Java GUI

    Hello everyone!
Can anybody tell about new features in SAP GUI for Java. I think It's emasculate now. It doesn't contain New ABAP editor, Network graphic, normal Screen Painter... I really enjoy adding themes and other stuff, but when these functionality will be added?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I use Java GUI from version 6.40, so i didn't know new ABAP editor for years. Once somebody shows me its features ...and I found that it is really good editor compared with previous Notepad-like frontend editor. But I have to say that customized version od Gvim used as external editor is in 90% better then new ABAP editor (the only problem is that double click on object doesn't work, but some workarounds are known for double-click on locally defined objects).
Graphical screen painter is generally good tool, but once I cannot find any feature (sorry, I forgot which one, it happens about 6 years ago). I ask a SAP guru sitting near me. He comes, switch graphical screen painter off and click to a box in non-graphical version of screen painter. Then he told me that some features are not accessible in graphical screen painter. It was last time I used graphical version of screen painter.
Themes? Works .... at least for me (Linux 32 bit and now Linux 64 bit too).
So I think that Java GUI is usable (at least on Linux/Mac, I am not sure how in works under Windows) but you cannot stick on all features (and maybe you can find better working variants of it). E. g. I have no problem with new ABAP editor, it would be much better for me, if I can open external editor clicking to "Change" button in SE38 directly instead of click plus selecting external editor from menu.

      Pavel

  • ZAC looks for Java Development kit

Is it true that ZAC needs Java Developmement kit installed on the client?
Because my ZAC client got the following error:
    overallfound JAVA_HOME for JavaSoft VM: D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3
couldn't load Sun VM: 'Sun VM libraries do not exist/cannot be loaded in
    JAVA_HO
    ME D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3\bin\javai.dll'
Cannot load a suitable Java VM: error cannot load VM with order preference
    'S',
    exiting
When I reinstall JDK it is okay. When I rename the registry key 'Java
Development Kit' to something else it stop working again. Rename it back
    makes it works.
But I don't know why ZAC need JDK since I only want end user install JRE
    instead.
    Thanks.

The OpenJDK is under the GPL (with the classpath exception)
I searched on the internet and many people says: Java Development Kit is under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and You don't can to distribute your programs compiled with Java Development Kit as a commercial software or to sell a product written in javaThey are wrong. The license of the software only governs how you may use it and what you can do with its source code. It does not restrict what you can do with the things you build with it (as long as you don't use parts of the JDK itself in your product)
, You need a business license if you want to sell a product written in java, I mean: You must to buy: Java for Business JDK/JRE. This information is true? No.
[Java for Business|http://www.sun.com/software/javaforbusiness/index.jsp] is a program by Sun/Oracle that allows you to buy support for the JDK. For example it allows you to use (and be supported with) the JDK 1.4.2, which is otherwise at its end-of-life.
You don't need to buy that if you just want to build and sell software using the JDK.

  • New version of Java Developer Certification

    Hi!
I' ve done the NW04 Dev Consultant Java Certification and am now wondering - as NW7.1 with Java EE 5.0 gets into Ramp-Up - when a new version (with a delta certification?) will be available for this educational path.
Additionally I would like to take either Portal or ABAP certification - could anybody tell me which of these two skills would better fit to my skill set and be more valuable in future?
    Regards,
    Thomas

I think you can do the Portal certification with little effort, at least I did. I just read the training material once (I had some experience in the Portal) and certified.
ABAP is really a big plus, even if you just develop portal/java/webdynpro/caf applications or components. But I personally wouldn't spend the time to get certified in it. It might be a better idea to go for the Sun Java 5 certification.

  • Linux for Java Development

I will be installing linux on my new laptop(yet to get it). I was using slackware 11 till date. Slack 11 was powerful and I liked it, except for a few things in it. I was thinking of shifting to ubuntu 7.04 as it had a better interface albeit the work always comes down to the console. I would like to know which version of linux would you suggest, keeping in mind Java and other development work. As in, it should be flexible and powerful, keeping in mind the kind of work developers are involved in(Work on Java and C++ development).

Just use whatever you feel like. Much like when you were buying your laptop, I reckon you're worrying too much about getting something that's absolutely perfect. Nothing ever is, you can't tell how suitable it is for you up-front and you certainly can't find that out by asking other people. You can only truly know what's best for you by finding out for yourself what isn't best for you, the hard way
For the record, I use Red Hat Enterprise at work, and XP, Vista or Ubuntu at home, depending on how I feel, except for Vista which is installed on my laptop, but is going as soon as I get round to it. The bag of shyte. Ubuntu is extremely well-supported, I got SVN, Apache, Tomcat, CruiseControl, Maven, Ant and god knows what else up and running on it in next to no time, with the minimum of effort and hunting around. Far quicker than doing the same on, say, an XP box. That's worth bearing in mind
Worrying about versions of an OS is a red herring, too. Just choose something and install it, you're a developer, get on and develop!
