Hello all, I'm a completely new Flash user, but am an
experienced user of Adobe Photoshop. My question has a few parts.
I'm actually starting a design business but would like to create a
Flash based web site, but I'm starting from the ground floor when
it comes to both creating a web site and learning Flash.
1. What version of Flash comes most recommended? I have
access to version 8, so what I'm wondering whether there is
justification enough to obtain the Adobe version, both in terms of
learning the software and going back and forth between Photoshop.
2. Is Flash the only program I need to know to create and
post a web site?
3. Although this is obviously a question relevant to a
particular person's software experience, how
difficult/time-consuming is it to learn Flash?

The most recent version is Flash CS3 - (flash player 9), some
will call it Flash 9.
I'm not sure whether demo is available yet, if not, hold on,
it will be in a matter

Depends. You still need some other tools for audio editing
(if require any) or raster
images editing (if any). Otherwise, that's pretty much all
you need to make stuff in Flash.
It's still good to have some HTML editing program, some sites
are better off using flash
mixed with images, not full blown flash based content. For
that DreamWeaver (adobe's tool)
is very good.

Learning curve not easy and not friendly. Perhaps due to very
unusually interface and
specific only to this program terminology and programming
language. Once you get passed
that, things are relatively simple. Don't be put off if you
not into programming.
Lots of users stick to timeline based animation part of the
application, with minimal
use of coding, capable of producing some stunning work. And
the other way round.

Best System Diagnostic, Optimisation & Repair Tool/App For Noobs & Novices?

The one thing that frustrates the **** out of me is that for noobs like me, when something goes wrong on ones Mac - it is a absolute nightmare trying to figure out how to fix it or get rid of the problem without being a rocket scientist on mac architecture and software code.
I then have to spend days on end shooting in the dark, browsing forums for answers and wasting valuable time trying all sorts of different things which do not usually solve the problem.
For example, I am getting constant spinning wheels on my June 2009 17" 2.8 MBP & I mean every other minute or so. When this happens sometimes my CPU readings go through the roof - nearly 200%! Same thing happens when using Safari as when using basic, simple apps. Doing simple things can cause a massive load on the CPU's with a high temperature rise. The trackpad is also very problematic and seems to have issues - it selects & highlights things blue, the cursor sweeps away randomly or sticks, sometimes it does not respond, stops following my finger, jumps and selects the wrong input, ignores touch clicks, the multi touch features are erratic etc and is extremely sensitive. I have tried multiple repair permissions, repair & verify disks, PRAM resets, techtool pro deluxe, Preferential Treatment, Safari resets, Applejack, ClamXav, etc and none have worked.
Is there a programme out there that constantly monitors your system and
1) Detects when something is wrong, broken, corrupted, damaged or in conflict?
2) Informs you of this as it happens
3) Diagnoses the problem(s) and its/their source?
4) Fixes or Repairs the Issue for You?
5) Stops it from happening again
6) Constantly keeps your system clean and ensures it is always operating at optimum performance? If not something very similar or like they have in Windows where it interactively asks and suggests possible fixes and then carries them out?
Surely, someone at Apple must have figured out the need for something like this? I have Onyx but it is just way too complicated a programme for someone like me to use.
I have no idea about how computers work - I am monkey see - monkey do, but even then, were not Apple computers designed just for idiots like me because they "just work"? This is getting to be worse than having to deal with the various virus scans etc on windows - at least you could find out what the problem was and deal with it directly and have a ton of resources and fixes to help you. I am wasting days on end shooting in the dark for solutions to Apple problems and it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. How is it that one of the latest and greatest high performance notebooks around gets to use so much CPU load by just a simple thing like running a single app or browsing the internet or that the most advanced & best operating system in the world can de so very difficult to diagnose problems? I am so very frustrated and beginning to regret moving to Apple - someone please kindly help.

OS X pretty much takes care of itself as far as maintenance goes. No need to defrag hard drive either; that's done on-the-fly. With that being said, here is what I have and use:
1. OnyX - Run the "Automation" tab periodically to repair permissions, clean System and User cache, font cache, etc.
2. Maintidget - Although OS X runs maintenance scripts automatically now, I use this widget to monitor when my maintenance scripts were run last. You also have the option to run them manually if you wish.
3. DiskWarrior - I periodically rebuild my hard drive's directory. It's more of a preventative maintenance thing I do.
Try logging into another User account and see if the computer runs any faster. This is a good troubleshooting procedure to see if you have a "local" or "system-wide" problem. If your computer runs faster/better in another User account, the problem is most likely isolated locally to your main User Library. For example, you could have self-inflicted problems installing software.
How full is your hard drive? That can slow you down if it's nearly full.

Noob Question: Problem with Persistence in First Entity Bean

Hey folks,
I have started with EJB3 just recently. After reading several books on the topic I finally started programming myself. I wanted to develop a little application for getting a feeling of the technology. So what I did is to create a AppClient, which calls a Stateless Session Bean. This Stateless Bean then adds an Entity to the Database. For doing this I use Netbeans 6.5 and the integrated glassfish. The problem I am facing is, that the mapping somehow doesnt work, but I have no clue why it doesn't work. I just get an EJBException.
I would be very thankfull if you guys could help me out of this. And don't forget this is my first ejb project - i might need a very detailed answer ... I know - noobs can be a real ....
So here is the code of the application. I have a few methods to do some extra work there, you can ignore them, there are of no use at the moment. All that is really implemented is testConnection() and testAddCompany(). The testconnection() Methode works pretty fine, but when it comes to the testAddCompany I get into problems.
Edit:As I found out just now, there is the possibility of Netbeans to add a Facade pattern to an Entity bean. If I use this, everythings fine and it works out to be perfect, however I am still curious, why the approach without the given classes by netbeans it doesn't work.

Well I don't understand this. If Netbeans created a Stateless Session Bean as a facade then it works -and it is implemented as a CMP, not as a BMP as you suggested.
I defenitely will try you suggestion, just for curiosity and to learn the technology, however I dont have see why BMP will work and CMP won't.
I also don't see why a stateless bean can not be a CMP. As far as I read it should not matter. Also on the link you sent me, I can't see anything related to that.
Maybe you can help me answering these questions.
I hope the above lines don't sound harsh. I really appreciate your input.

Okay, that's got one thing ruled out at least.
Can you check something for me, big? I'd like to see if iTunes launches with the Bonjour Service disabled.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes. Does it open this time?

How to share iTunes with my wife ? (i'm a noob)

i'm a noob in Mac world and iTunes also (i'm coming from PC world so...) so sorry in advance if i don't use the correct Mac vocabulary...
So here is my problem:
my wife and i share a Mac Pro.
we also share one iTunes.
Let's say that our whole music list represents 100 songs.
40 songs are "her list"
40 songs are mine
20 songs are shared
How to configure iTunes to manage such a situation please ?
Note: last week, i created 2 iTunes librairy: one for her (name: VRN), one for me (name: VV). In her iTunes librairy, i've put only her songs. Same thing in mine. Until today, everything seems to work correctly BUT:
1. with this setting, i don't how to manage share songs.
2. today, when i try to listen my music, i have this msg: "iTunes can find the original file...do you want to look for it ? " i don't know why !!!

You can authorize her computer to play your music, then sync the music to her iPhone as she does any other music.

This is the noob question of the week regarding gdm

I am no linux noob per se. but i did something really really stupid just now.
started with a fresh install of arch, added e17 and gdm.
wait...did i forget something? but of course! create a non-root user. so anywho. now gdm is installed and comes up automatically on boot.
the problem: i have only a root user as of right now and gdm does not allow root logins by default. pressing ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE quits gdm alright, but it just keeps restarting and restarting. doing killall gdm also fails to do the trick.
so pretty much... i can't log in. of course i need to create a nonroot user, but first i must figure out how to kill gdm so i have room to work.
i am thinking running a livecd (gentoo maybe?) and then chroot and edit the rc.conf so gdm does not come on automatically. then reboot into arch, create user, edit rc.conf to start gdm once again. reboot once again and login with user, but i am sure there is a less drastic measure out there somewhere i can take.
PS: i installed madwifi-ng from svn just fine, but i cant seem to find wireless-tools (at least pacman doesn't install it)... and i kinda need them, how do i go about setting them up?
and why am i using gdm when i can be using entrance? hell. you got me there. i really dont know.

You can set gdm from the main screen to accept a root login by going to the configure options. The exact heading it is under will depend upon the gdm style you are using (usually under the "Actions" category). It will require your root pass to access but after that just goto the appropriate tab and tick where needed. Also, you can Alt + Ctrl + F1 to exit X and get to a command prompt where you can set up your user as desired.

K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ? Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!). Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card), Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V". Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ? My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use). Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know. Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best. Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ? How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !

Podcast help for a noob

Hey guys, noob to podcasts.
My problem:
I subscribe to a podcast, and it starts downloading the podcast program. It downloads for a bit, then stops, so I go to the podcast part of the library, and double click the program to play it, but all it does is start downloading again.
I've tried various programs, but it just does the same thing with each one.
Help!

Noob needs help: DrWeb-DAEMON - A message has not been checked due to licen

I keep getting these emails (see below). Can someone please tell me what part of the email system is generating these emails? Are they normal? They seem to be blocking mostly spam (which is good) but, there is some email that is being blocked that I would like to come through. How would I unblock certain email? If you need any logs or such posted, please let me know.

DrWeb is an anti-virus software product.
It is not part of the standard Mac OS X system, and it doesn't appear to even have a Mac OS X version, therefore it isn't anything your server is doing.
The liklihood, then, is that your upstream mail server (maybe your ISP?) is using DrWeb to filter email. You'd need to talk to them about configuration options.

Noob needs help: Macbook RAM/storage upgrade advice

Firstly, let me apologize in advance for my ignorance in this subject area! I'm a complete noob!
Here goes:
I have a MacBook 7,1 (MC516LL/A) with all original, factory components, and since I've upgraded to OS X 10.7.5, it's been running incredibly S...L...O...W... which is incredibly annoying to me:P
Out of the 250GB's of HD storage, I have about 91 free. From my previous experience with mac notebooks, I know that I am going to need to get some more hard drive space, soon (my last iBook turned to complete crap, once I got down to 20 gigs of available memory).
I see that I can upgrade the RAM from two, 1GB sticks to two, 4GB sticks. From the limited research I've done, I'm under the impression that only the boot-up speed will increase slightly (please correct me if any of this is wrong).
I've also been reading about Solid State Drives, found some reasonably priced ones on crucial.com, and they look/sound AWESOME! Aaaaaand the reality is that I really have no idea what I truly need. I'm a single mom and a college student, so I'm looking for an upgrade option in the $200-300 range, *and* I'm not into graphic design, web design, or anything that requires top of the line equipment.
My macbook is practically glued to my hands 24/7, so I just want it to run FASTER, and I need more storage. I don't know if this info is pertinent or helps, but outside of studying (all done with ebooks and online websites), I like to download a lot of music, watch videos, upload family pictures, browse the interwebz, etc., etc.
What can I do to improve speed and expand storage capacity?

Hello! I own a mid-2010 MacBook (a.k.a MacBook 7,1) running OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, which I use for school, and I had the exact same issues with my MacBook, before I upgraded it. I had almost filled up my MacBook's HDD and my computer's RAM was insufficient to perform any of my day-to-day tasks with ease. I upgraded the RAM from two sticks of 1GB (the factory-installed configuration) to one stick of 4GB, and I installed a 1TB HDD in place of the original 250GB HDD (my requirements were slightly different from what yours seem to be). Currently, my MacBook is a lot less laggy than it used to be (even with a HDD that's four times larger in terms of capacity installed), but it still takes a long time to start up and perform certain tasks. Therefore, from my experience, I would recommend that you do the following:
1. Get two sticks of 2GB (2x2GB) of RAM, not one stick of 4GB (1x4GB). Even though the latter will probably be considerably cheaper than the former, I think it's worth the few extra dollars to get the former because it's much faster than the latter. You shouldn't go for anything more than 4GB of RAM in total, because it'll overload your MacBook. Trust me, that's not something you want to have to deal with!
2. Get a 500GB or 512GB SSD, not a larger HDD. In hindsight, I don't think I even needed anything close to 1TB. I only purchased my huge HDD because it was on offer, and it was being sold (believe it or not) for less than a 500GB HDD. But if you're looking for speed, an HDD is not the way to go; they're much, much slower than SSDs, even though they're much cheaper.
You should see an exponential increase in the speed of your MacBook. You might want to try the following websites; they offer high-quality, affordable components and I've known people (including myself) who have used their products before.

Noob needs help using/managing large font collection in os10

Hope this is the correct forum for this question. I'm a os10 noob starting at a new, small startup design-oriented biz (6-7 macs) that needs to manage fonts - 100s, over a 1000. Other places I've worked used Font Reserve and I'm familiar with that program but I never knew if it came with os10 or you had to go buy it, and if you needed to buy a separate copy for each computer?
I'm trying to help get this biz set-up, but I know NOTHING about font usage/set-up in os10. I've always used ATM Deluxe4.6 (os9) and have over 2000 fonts nicely arranged in sets (took me an entire day, way back when). Would love to transfer these arranged sets into os10, if possible.
Is there a built-in font mgmt in os10? Is it any good for large collections? Is Font Reserve a good program for large font collections?

Noob Needs Help - Importing Html Pages into "My Site"

Greetings
I am sure this is a noob question that may have been asked, but I couldn't find it by searching so here goes.
I jumped right into Dream Weaver, following an online tutorial... and have a decent webpage but I must have skipped some steps or missed something and I would hate to backtrack and do it all over again...
When I began, I just started working on a HTML page... and now that its done, I want to make it a template etc...
But I never created a "site" as far as SITE > NEW SITE etc.
So now that I have, I need to tell DW that "These pages are included... these images are included, all that neat SPRY stuff I have done needs to be "in the site".
I am looking for a button that says, "Hey dummy, you need to select the pages that are included in your site" but can't find it...
Any help?

Noob needs help with Logic and Motu live setup.

Hello everyone,
I'm a noob / semi noob who could use some help with a live setup using 2 MOTU 896HD's and Logic on a Mac.
Here's the scenario:
I teach an outdoor marching percussion section (a drumline and a front ensemble of marimbas and vibes). We have an amazing setup of live sound to amplify and enhance the mallet percussion. There is a yamaha PA system with 2 subs and 2 mains which are routed through a rack unit that processes the overall PA balance. I'm pretty sure that the unit is supposed to avoid feedback and do an overall cross-over EQ of the sound. Other then that unit, we have 2 motu896hd units which are routed via fire-wire. I also have a coax cable routing the output of the secondary box to the input of the primary box (digital i/o which converts to ADAT in (i think?)..?
Here's the confusion:
There are more then 8 inputs being used from the ensemble itself, so I need the 16 available inputs to be available in Logic. I was lead to believe that the 2nd motu unit would have to be sent digitally to the 1st motu unit via coax digital i/o. Once in Logic, however, I cannot find the signal or any input at all past the 8th input (of the 1st unit).
Here's the goal:
All of my performers and inputs routed via firewire into a Mac Mini running OSX and Logic pro.
I want to be able to use MainStage and run different patches of effects / virt. instruments for a midi controller keyboard / etc.
I want to be able to EQ and balance the ensemble via Logic.
Here's another question:
How much latency will I be dealing with? Would a mac mini with 4gb of ram be able to handle this load? With percussion, I obviously want the sound as latency free as possible. I also, however, want the flexibility of sound enhancement / modification that comes with Logic and the motu896hd units.
Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I need the routing assistance along with some direction as to whether or not this will work for this type of application. I'm pretty certain it does, as I have spoken with some other teachers in similar venues and they have been doing similar things using mac mini's / logic / mainstage / etc.

You'll definitely want to read the manual to make sure the 896HDs are connected together properly. ADAT is a little tricky, it's not just a matter of cabling them together. Go to motunation.com if you need more guidance on connecting multiple devices. Beyond that initial hookup, here are a couple of quick suggestions:
1. Open CueMix and see if both devices are reported there. If not, your connections aren't correct. Be sure to select 44.1kHz as your sample rate, otherwise you are reducing the number of additional channels. For instance at 88.2kHz you would get half the additional channels via ADAT.
2. You may need to create an aggregate device for the MacBook to recognize more than the first 896HD. Lots of help on this forum for how to do that. Again, first make sure you have the 896HDs connected together properly.
3. As for latency with Mainstage on the Mini, no way to know until you try it. Generally MOTU is fantastic for low latency work but Mainstage is a question mark for a lot of users right now. If the Mini can't cut the mustard, you have a great excuse to upgrade to a MacBook Pro.

OSX 10.8 server Set VPN server in Local net, How to restrict the Local some IP connect to the VPN server?(noob,so need clearly)

the tittle is my question. I am noob , so I hope i can make my question clear. Now i 'd like to tell you more about my question:
My aim is to set a VPN server in Local lan, then ppl can connect to the VPN server, But I dont wanna all of the Local lan IP cant connet to it. So I neet to set a rule to restrick some local Ip to connect failure, just like banning so IP in a rule.such as: just like the "192.168.4.3~192.168.4.20 ; 192.168.7.3~192.168.7.20 " IPs can connect . the IPs which outside the rules can not do.
my step is following:
1) install server app
2)and then i set a VPN server , finally the VPN server can be connected successfully by local lan computer(PC or Mac)
3)But i found no restrict IP founction in Server app panel.
4)then i down load workgroup manager, and found nothing there about such a founction about IP restriction.
so can you tell me how to aproach my aim?

Won't the password restrict everyone from connecting unless they know the password?

Bootcamp Basics needed for noob(s)....???

Well I am completely new to Mac and after reading many forums regarding the choice of Boot camp vs Parallels/Fusion/Virtual Box, I chose the bootcamp road as I would prefer to utilise all my system resources for faster performance etc, even though I do have a copy of PD7 still.
But now after reading further posts it seems people are having a lot of issues with bootcamp.
I have read the Apple support document regarding the installation of Bootcamp/Windows 7 and it seems pretty straight forward other than the fact I don't have a Lion disk to install the bootcamp drivers, I know I need a blank CD/DVD but at what point do I use it??, this is not clear on the instructions.
I really want to be able to fully install Windows 7 on bootcamp with all required drivers either side without any issues/problems.
Is it so hit and miss or is there a way to actually install Windows 7 through Bootcamp without any issues, if so please can someone give us noobs a clear way of doing the install.
Would appreciate any feedback.
