I'm a online university student. Can I replace Windows 7 with Arch?

Actually both my wife and I are both online students. I'm so tired of Windows 7. I want to be free from the chains of Windows. I know Wine won't run all my programs but they are getting better. I was looking into getting VMWare Workstation 8 or VirtualBox. I know there is VMWare player that is free. But I can afford to pay for VMWare workstation. I  just hope it's a fast virtual environment. I'm not a new user to Linux either. Been running it since OpenSuse 9 a long time ago. But it has been a dual boot setup. I'm ready to venture out and use Arch Linux.
So I was wondering if anyone else here is running Arch Linux full time and also a student. Have you run into any issues? If so how did you solve it? Hopefully when I do this. I can convert some friends and family.

@mythus,
I was also about to say that that is outrageous. I would very much like to know the university and subject or country and subject but I understand you might not wish to say. If they really gave a zero purely because they could tell it was not done in Office 2010, that's reprehensible. The only exception I could think of would be a course on the use of specific computer software where the assignment was designed to test students skills with Office 2010 specifically. That would be an odd uni course, but...
To the OP,
You should find out your university's policy on support for different OSs. This is really important for online study. If you are on campus, you can always use a computer lab if you have to to get something particular done. If you are halfway around the world, that's not an option. Universities vary wildly in their support for different OSs. Some require students to have machines which meet certain standards and which are equipped with Windows. Others actively support cross-platform solutions. Others officially support Windows, sort of support Mac and do "best effort" support for Linux. I have also been on campuses where the support for non-Windows was non-existent to the point that the campus didn't actually recognise the possible existence of non-Windows machines. This was good and bad. On the negative side, none of the packs MS makes available to help Mac/Unix users connect to Windows servers were installed. None. On the positive side, all network security checked for was Windows. Plug a Mac laptop in and you had immediate access to the web, printers etc. even before you'd been issued with a computer account. Plug a Windows laptop in and it demanded a username and password.
Psychology is likely to require the use of specific statistics packages. You would need to know which. You also need to bear in mind that the software in use in three, four or more years time won't necessarily be what's used now. Stuff can change quite quickly. Even new versions and updates can block access. So even if you don't update your software, the university may update server software in ways which make it difficult for you to access the information you need.

    I have a late 2012 mac mini with an i5 2 core can I replace it with an i7 quad core?

    A few places online may still offer the i7 2.3GHz quad-core Late 2012 MINI (Oct 2012 to Oct 2014)
    that allows the user-upgrade of RAM to 16GB, and this one I've seen is a Server model and has
    two 1-TB Hard Disk Drives. The B&H store in NY online has this listed, if in stock now, price &
    shipping in continental US is good until tomorrow.
    Your i5 dual-core is still desirable to many, & you may be able to resell it if not needed.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

    I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

    I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • Can we replace OracleSytemUser with a custom user in ldap?

    HI,
    We have installed soa 11g and configured Microsoft AD as ldap provider.
    I have couple of questions around this.
    1. Can we remove the default embedded authenticator totally? If yes what are the things we should keep in mind?
    2. We don't want hard coded users like "OracleSystemUser". Can we replace OracleSystemUser with our custom user, maybe assinging our user to OracleSystemGroup in our ldap.
    Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Manish

    Whether you, specifically, can completely replace a laptop with an iPad depends on what you use your laptop for. The iPad is not designed to completely replace a laptop. • Can I replace CUA with CUP. If not why or what will be the risks

    Hi,
    The client does not want to have two provisioning systems CUP & CUA. The sole purpose they are using CUA is the proper accounting for SAP licenses such that the user ID remains the same across the landscape. No other purpose of using CUA. In this case can I replace CUA with CUP 5.3 SP12.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sanjeev

    There are limitations to doing that.
    CUA has a technology focus and does not take access risk into consideration at all. The long-term successor of this would be Netweaver Identity Management. If you want to consistently manage user master data and license information, that's probably the solution to look at.
    You can perfectly use CUP on top of that to manage authorizations. You can also force CUP to only allow user IDs from a central system like CUA or ActiveDirectory in order to enforce user ID consistency.
    What CUP will not do is give you an overview of where a user is maintained with which kind of information/license data. That is something that either CUA (for ABAP only) or Netweaver Identity Management will give you.
    Frank.

  • I have an iphone 4 and it's not working, if i pay can apple replace it with the same model even though it's no longer for sale?

    I have an iphone 4 and it's not working, if i pay can apple replace it with the same model even though it's no longer for sale?

    If the iPhone has not been opened or serviced by other than Apple
    or authoriized service provider (there are a few other requirements),
    you should be eligible for out of warranty replacemement for $149 US.
    Apple maintains sufficient stock for replacements even for iPhones that
    are no longer available for purchase. You may be better off upgrading to
    a newer version than paying $149 to stay with the iPhone 4.
    What is no longer working? If you provide more details as to the problem
    and what troubleshooting steps you have taken, some one may offer
    a solution.

    No. The warranty does not cover damage.
    You can only get a replacement if you can talk Apple into selling you and out of warranty replacement.

    How do I lock an app on my iPad so my students can't close the app by pressing the home button?

    Settings > General > Acessibility > Guided Access. Enter the app, and triple click the home button. Just tap Guided Access and it's locked in the app. You can even draw on areas of the screen that you don't want them to tap. It's amazing, isn't it ?

  • [JS - CS3]  Can't REPLACE A with B within a string? Help Please...

    Hello Experts,
    First off - I'm a newbee to all this JS and especially with CS3.
    I have a string: '
    b myDocumentName
    which can have it's value as: '
    b 00000en_ Generator WX/WY
    Problem is, backshlashes ( / )are a bad thing for me...
    b Question:
    How can I do a 'replace' operation to replace the '/' from the string with a '_'?
    I have at the moment:
    > var myDocSaveName = oneResult[3]+oneResult[4]+oneResult[5];
    > myDocSaveName.replace(what "/", with "");
    > myDoc.save ("C:/DATA/"+myDocSaveName, undefined, undefined, true)
    I get an error Nr. 25... Offending text:"/"
    What am I doing wrong?

    'what' and 'with' are the names of those arguments. They should not be included in the statement:
    myDocSaveName.replace("/", "");
    But that still won't work because replace doesn't operate on a string in situ, it returns the modified string. So:
    myDocSaveName = myDocSaveName.replace("/", "");
    This too has its limitations. It'll change only the first instance of "/", not all of them. To change all of them, you need to restate the 'what' as a RegExp:
    myDocSaveName = myDocSaveName.replace(/\//g, "_");
    A RegExp literal is delimited by the "/" character, so to have it, alone, as the character to be sought you must use the backslash to escape the character. Then, to indicate you want the replace to happen globally within the string, you add the 'g' after the RegExp.

  • Modal window can't show window with viewset???

    Hi all,
    I use the following code to create a popup modal window. When i embed only one view, it works fine, but when i embed a viewset, and put multiple views into the viewset, it can only pop up a tiny little area with nothing in it.
    is there a reason for this? what do i do to pop up a window with viewset?
    Thanks!
         IWDWindowInfo windowInfo = (IWDWindowInfo)wdComponentAPI.getComponentInfo().findInWindows("OneWindow");
         IWDWindow window = wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createModalWindow(windowInfo);
         window.setWindowPosition (300, 150);
         window.show();

    Hi
    I'm opening popup window using viewSet. and its working fine,
    You need to set the window position, so that it can be viewed properlty.
    public void openPopUpWindow( )
        //@@begin openPopUpWindow()
            IWDWindowInfo winfo=wdComponentAPI.getComponentInfo().findInWindows("Popwindow");
            IWDWindow window1=wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createModalWindow(winfo);
              window1.setWindowPosition(10,280);
              window1.show();
                  //@@end

  • Can you replace iCloud with a local cloud?

    I know that this is not Apple's plan, and I know that there's no easy way to do it.
    However, is it possible to replace iCloud with a local cloud? I'd like to use my Apple Time Capsule or my WD My Passport wireless drive to store my iTunes, iPhoto and e-mail libraries, as well as to be the cloud that has my keyword chain, and other app syncing, like contacts & notes, for my Macs and IOS devices.
    There are a number of reasons:
    - I have several TB of storage
    - It is much more secure as I can encrypt everything and have control of the physical storage devices
    - It is more portable - I can take the cloud onto an aeroplane, or into the desert and it'll still work, unlike iCloud that needs a wi-fi connection
    I can see other people would have the same requirement. If you have a business with sensitive data, for example, you'd not want it stored remotely, you'd want full control of all the encryptions, backup, access control and so forth.
    Any ideas? It'd be great if one could simply change DNS so that icloud.com points to your own device, but I know it's nothing like as simple as that!

  • Daed Graphics card - what model can I replace it with?

    My Radeon 850XT died. I am having a lot of trouble finding out what I can replace it with, i.e. what's available and where to buy it.
    any recommendations please?

    Hi-
    Bummer- that card is the most powerful card ever made available in an AGP G5.
    If you stay with OEM cards, you are limited to a few, used or refurbs from highly priced Mac specialty stores.
    eBay may be a better option for used. Many people go with flashed cards (PC cards converted to Mac ROM), simply because there are no real alternatives, other than high priced, or questionable used cards. Flashed cards are readily available on ebay, or, one may try to do it yourself, though the process is not a beginners endeavor. Flashed cards, with few exceptions, function as a real Mac card would, and are completely supported in the appropriate OS versions.
    Your biggest problem, other than finding a card, is that almost all cards will be a step down from the 850.
    There is one 8x AGP card, a flashed Geforce 7800 GS that will outperform the X850.
    In order from powerful to weak, options are:
    Geforce 7800 GS (flashed)
    Radeon X850XT (used)
    Radeon X800XT (used)
    Geforce 6800 Ultra (used or flashed)
    Geforce 6800 GT (used or flashed)
    Radeon 9800 XT (used or flashed)
    Radeon 9800 SE (used)
    Radeon 9800 Pro (used or flashed)
    Radeon 9650 Pro (used)
    Radeon 9600 Pro (used, flashed, or a new, PC and Mac version)
    Geforce 5200 (used or flashed)
    Some "retail" sources include:
    We Love Macs
    Mac Resource
    Mac-Pro

    If you need ADC output, you are limited to used OEM cards.

  • University student, can't decide on which Macbook Pro to buy?

    Hi everyone, I'm starting Television Production at University and they use Avid Media Composer 6.5 for all their editing. I looked at the system requirements for a Mac, and I know for a fact my macbook pro atm would never be able to cope with it. It's from early 2006, it has an outdated graphics card/processor and not near enough RAM or the right OS X to run it smoothly. And since I'll be at University for another 3 years, I've considered getting a new Mac because I'll need one eventually. I get a £1000 overdraft from my bank, question is, which Macbook Pro do I go for? I'd prefer to have one with 6/8GB RAM (recommended to run Avid), and i5/i7. Is there much difference in the specs between 13" and 15"? Does RAM/processor really matter when it comes to editing software? All in all I'm looking for a Macbook that'll last me for a long while and won't become outdated anytime soon, for under £1000.

    For video editing I recommend 15". You will be happy you have the extra screen real estate. I also recommend buying with minimum installed ram then upgrade with 3rd party ram to 16GB. If you opt for the retina display order it with 16GB ram.
