I'm a Pc user wanting to switch to a Mac. . .

Hi, I currently am sharing a PC with my brother. We both use it a lot and one computer isn't big enough for the two of us. So i was hoping to buy a Mac Mini. Only problem is, I don't have that much money to spend. Because I also need the money for a keyboard, mouse and monitor.(I know everything is expensive and I didn't expect to pay $200, I do know the value of a dollar.) So I can probably only afford the 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo. And I'm not a genius when it comes to some things and I'm new to Mac's so I have some questions.
1. 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor vs. 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor?
2. Can I get a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor installed later on if I start out with the 1.5 Solo?
3. If so, how much $$$ will it cost me?
4. Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) vs. Double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)?
5. 512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM): how much $$$ to upgrade to 1GB memory?
I hope for a reply as soon as you read this.
-please and thank you,

hey, its fantastic your switching to a mac!
to answer your questions
1. 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor vs. 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor?
In terms of performance the extra .16 GHZ power would not be worth it unless you are running professional programs (in which case dont look at a mac mini)
2. Can I get a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor installed later on if I start out with the 1.5 Solo?
THe processor is soldered directly to the motherboard (or as mac call them "logic board") so an upgrade will be nearly impossible
3. If so, how much $$$ will it cost me?
sometimes you can find a new logic board at a spares supplier, unless you are a good electro-head i would stay clear, a lot of hassle changing one
4. Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) vs. Double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)?
do the same job but the superdrive will burn your dvds, if you copy dvd films then you will be disappointed coz theres no software to do this.
if you burn data to dvds then i would go for it, external dvd drives arent good for macs, external hard drives are fine.
5. 512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM): how much $$$ to upgrade to 1GB memory?
apple will charge you a fortune for this, probably about $100. if you are farmiliar with the inside working of a pc, it is cheaper to buy some on ebay, DDR2 is the stuff you want. But if you cant fit it your self and you dont know anyone who can, best to get it from apple
any other questions, just holla
Peace y'all

  • PC user wanting to sync everything with .mac

I'm a PC user switching to mac. At this time I have a .mac account. I also own an iPhone.
Here it is- I am trying to:
    1. Basically, I want to sync ALL of the information I have on Microsoft Outlook (contacts, calendar, etc.) with .mac (if it's possible). Of course I have had no trouble with getting email on the iPhone.
    2. Is it possible in this early stage of switching from PC to mac - to just sync my iPhone with .mac from the internet - or will I have to go on using Outlook until I get my mac?
    3. When I get a mac, how easy will it be to sync all of my info I have on Outlook with the mac?
    And last...
    4. Because my iPhone has synced with the PC - will it still be easy to switch that to mac?
    I hope I was clear. I know it's a lot.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This will seem to be a complicated answer, but bear with me. For starters, .Mac Sync technology synchronizes only selected data types between one or more Macintosh desktop or portable computers, and the .Mac servers. It does not itself interact directly with any other applications or devices. For example, the contacts and events on your iPhone are synchronized using iTunes, interchanging data with the truth database on your Macintosh platform, and distributed elsewhere in your synchronization pool to other supported applications, devices and servers.
For a background on this technology, read this document. It does not reflect the inclusion of the iPhone which synchronizes contacts and events only—not tasks—bidirectionally, or the nature of the iPod touch, which synchronizes contacts bidirectionally but events as if it were an iPod. It is otherwise up to date in the information it offers.
To the extent that your iPhone synchronizes contacts and event in Outlook, you can easily incorporate them onto your Macintosh in to the Address Book and iCal. Tasks: not so much. And mail, not at all.
The answer to mail is IMAP: if your provider doesn't offer it, switch to a provider who does. Even the reasonably low-level mail service offered by AOL supports IMAP. Many major providers such as Comcast and MSN Live do not, though IMAP is an option of US users of Gmail, and soon for other users or Gmail worldwide.
You cannot synchronize your iPhone directly with the .Mac servers 'over the air' using a carrier network, Bluetooth or wireless ethernet. You cannot synchronize your iPhone at all except using the supported USB pathway to iTunes on your Macintosh of Windows OS computer. It's no easier to synchronize with a Macintosh because you have already synchronized to Outlook on your PC, but your contacts and calendars should transfer without issue.
You'll find more discussions about how to to this in the iPhone forums, located here, primarily in the Mail, Calendar and Contacts subforum.

  • Windows User wants to Switch to Mac

I've had it with Windows! I want to buy a Mac system for the first time. I want to use the system to publish a newsletter and create a web site. Is the G5 the way to go? Can somebody recommend a nice Mac system for this? What software should I use from which a local print shop can generate the hard copies?

Well I'd suggest looking at the Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz, or the Quad 2.5 Ghz models. My reason for suggesting these two is that both models come with a good quality video card with 256 MBs of RAM. Since you will be working with graphics, its a good idea to have a decent video card, and the base card in these models is adequate for your tasks, though of course you could always change the video card to a different model to gain a bit more graphics performance if needed (you can configure the g5 at the Apple store).
Other reasons for the recommendation is the larger hard drive that comes stock in these models. As for processor performance, the Dual 2.3 is pretty good, and should be adequate for your needs. The Quad 2.5 is, well, just a beast. It has been benchmarked in graphic performance with applications of the type you would be using as the fastest desktop computer available in either the Windows or Mac world. Of course benchmarks have to be taken with a grain of salt, they are easily manipulated, and of course if you wait a week a different benchmark will come to a different conclusion.
If you already have a monitor, you should be able to use it with your new Mac. However, if you need a monitor as well, be sure and look at third party monitors, as well as the Apple monitors.
Corel released Corel Draw graphic suite 11 for OS X some time ago, so if you want to stay with Corel you can, though I do not believe they intend to do any updates to the product.
InDesign is a good choice, as is Adobes Creative Suite. The Creative Suite is available in various configurations, including one that has InDesign, GoLive (web design) as well as their graphic manipulation apps, Photoshop, Illustrator and more.
InDesign, after a slight slow start is accepted at just about all graphic design and printing serves, should you need those type of services.
In January, Apple will be holding their annual Mac World in San Francisco. It's usually a good time to look for "specials deals" from the various software and hardware companies that make Mac products. It's also a time when Apple announces new products, so you may want to keep an eye out for any announcements that may interest you.

  • G5 User wanting to Move to a Mac PRO but questions

My G5 1.8Gz single processor mac still works but i can't do anything that I want. Specifically, 3D Graphics and animation. All the programs nowadays want a better Graphics card and better processor.
Even the Free DAZ Studio 3, needs a much better computer than i have.
My computer is quite old now i recognize that. And i'm really ready to upgrade but I don't want to spend tooo much money aside from the near 2400 for the mac pro.
    1. Would i be able to keep my Current monitor?? I have an ACER flat screen and is connected to the G5 Tower. I bought it about 1 year ago, so it's not too old and it works perfectly.
    2. Will programs that i use in the G5 work fine in the mac pro( which will have Snow Leopard?Utilities, MS Office,3D Graphics Poser 6 and DAZ Studio 3. i don't really use any CLASSIC ( macos 9) stuff. Just OS X programs.
and will all the files I have work ? I mean, i don't want to have my mac not recognize files
    3. Since i don't really want to spend extra money. Will the base Quad Core mac pro which has 3 GB RAM be sufficient even though my current G5 has 4GB??? Will the Mac pro run better even though it's less GBytes than my current G5?
Ok I'm not a scientist or professional, just a hobbyest. Some may say that it would be better to just get an iMac. i know imacs are great and cheaper but i already have a monitor and i don't want to waste it and not use it.
Or would a Mac mini be better for me???? I"m attracted to the mac mini price.. But would i be able to connect my monitor and have enough options for connecting Firewire drives etc?( There's only one Firewire port)
And is the mac mini good enough for a 3D Graphics/animation hobbyetst?

    1. You can definitely keep your current monitor when you move to a Mac Mini/Mac Pro. A DVI or VGA connection is standard and available from either with included adapters.
    2. Programs should run fine using Rosetta on Snow Leopard. However, you will have to try your individual programs to find out. Many older programs have a few bugs running in Leopard/Snow Leopard, and any current machine will run Snow Leopard only.
    3. Mac Mini versus Mac Pro: you're looking at two different classes of machine. 3D rendering requires powerful hardware unless you are very patient. Only you can decide if a Mini is fast "enough". I encourage you to go to an Apple store. They will (probably) be willing to let you install one of the programs you use on both a Mini and a Mac Pro to see how they run, or they may have something pre-loaded you can try. Then you can decide if the speed difference is worth the $ to you.
Since you're still using a G5 1.8 GHz, it sounds like you get long use out of your machines. The Mac Pro is much better positioned to last a long time. Minis tend to be more "a good solution until the next hardware upgrade" devices or home theater PCs.
Good luck; let us know what you choose and how it goes!

How do I switch users on wifi sync for example my Mac has two users one apples MacBook pro the other is my name I want to switch from apples MacBook pro to my name how is this done?

Try connecting the iPad to the computer that you do not want to WiFi sync with and uncheck the WiFi sync option in iTunes. Then click on Apply. Reboot the iPad and see if that does the trick.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

When I am on a Youtube video that is running and I want to switch to another tab, the Ctrl+<tab number> does not work, is that intended functionality?

This can happen when the video player (Flash plugin) has the focus.
In that case the plugin consumes all the key presses.
You will have to click with the mouse elsewhere on the page or in the user interface to make keyboard shortcuts work.

  • I want to switch

Hello, I have been a Windows user for all of my life, and I really want to switch to Mac OS X. I think the software and hardware is eye candy and so easy to use. Yesterday I was on a friends iMac G5 and it was faster than my Sony which costed me $1800! So I can only imagine the speed of the new Intel Macs.
I really want to switch, but I don't know where to start. I don't know how to sell my computer for the best profit and such. I am afraid that I will lose money by selling my computer, although it is an extremely nice Windows PC.
I would like to wait for Leopard to come out installed on the iMac's but I would like to sell my computer soon so it doesn't get anymore outdated.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!
Oh, by the way how would I be able to watch and record HDTV on an iMac?
Sony VAIO VGC-RA840G Windows XP My computer will be 1 year old the 16th of Augest. I take extremely good care of my computer.

Prices aren't reflecting reality until an item actually sells. Pay no attention to bidding prior to that. Unless you're a bidder you must ignore all open auctions, and re-search your item using the "completed listings" limiter.
    edit-
You have the ability to see about three weeks of past results. Throw out the seemingly abnormally high and low results and the remaining price range is usually a pretty fair estimate of value, although that doesn't mean you'll like the number. Once you learn that info and set your goal, it becomes more a matter of "marketing."

  • Heading to college next year want to switch to mac

I have been considering switching to a mac for college but i have a few questions.
    1) Is the Heating up of a Macbook that big an issue?
    2) Does Microsoft Office come with Every Macbook?
    3) Is Microsoft Office as Easy to use on a Mac as it is in a Windows Machine?
    4) Does Aim Work well with a Mac?
    5) Can i speak with other people on aim while using iChat?
    6) Will my HP ipod work with a Os Mac?
    7) Could i Email a paper from Microsoft Office to a Wndows computer?
    8) Will i have a much better time on a Mca than my crashig virus filled Windows machine?
    Gateway Windows XP

    1) Heat isn't that much of a problem. If your dorm room is well air conditioned, you won't have much of a problem. Watch out for heat if your going to put it on your lap for a long period of time; a common problem with all laptops.
    2) Microsoft Office comes with all Macbooks, but it is only a 30 day trial. You will have to buy the retail version to have it forever.
    3) Microsoft Office has the same easy features as the ones on Windows (PCs). It also has a nice GUI (Graphical User Interface). You may have to adapt to the MAC version (2004), because somethings are placed differently here and there.
    4) AIM does work will with a MAC, but I do not suggest using iChat. I suggest using AdiumX which can be found at http://adiumx.com. Also, make sure your wireless connection is using "interface robustness" and make sure that your school firewall isn't blocking AIM for best connection.
    5) iChat connects to AIM or whatever you want it to. So if I get your question correctly, yes. Use AdiumX though, that program for instant messaging is much better. (You can have multiple services online without duplicate buddy lists, You can also change how it looks, sounds, etc. to whatever you want it to be.)
    6) Yes, your HP iPod will work with your Macbook running MacOS X, the HP part was only a retail partnership for HP to sell iPods. (I have an HP iPod myself and it works like any other iPod connected to a Macbook)
    7) Yes, you can eMail a Microsoft Office document to any computer. Office 2004 (MAC Version), will be able to save as a Office 2003 (Windows Version), but there are some features that the MAC Version has that the Windows Version has so Microsoft implimented a system called "Compatibility Check" to make sure you know if your document is compatible with the Office 2003 Version. You will not be able to open .docx or Office 2007 documents (Office 2007 will be the newer version for Windows which will be released with Windows Vista XP Ultimate).
    8) Yes, in my personal experience in coding for Windows and other companies, having a MAC for my personal use is perfect since I do not want to worry about viruses, crashes, or anything else in my "personal" time. To my knowledge in macs, there are no known spyware or viruses to Macs. MacOS X also has one of the best graphical interface and is probably the next generation operating system.
That should be everything, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Have fun with your new Macbook when you get it!
Edit: Microsoft Office 2004 costs $99 for the Student/Teacher Edition.

  • Logon inactive user without disabling switch user

Is it possible to logoff inactive users on a Windows 7 pc, which are logged on but as a result of switch user aren't active any more.
    Example:
I have user 1 to 10 and all users are logged in but every time teh new users logs on with the switch user option. Because the last user locked the station.
I want to switch of or log off these inactive users after a certain time of inactivity.

    Hi,
To force an inactive user to log off may result in a data lose. However we may consider to use some scripts to log off the idle Windows session (the inactive users), or consider to use screen saver.
    A similar thread for reference:
Automatically log off users when logon time expires
For the scripts, we may consider seek help in some scripts forum.

  • HT1296 i have been syncing my iphone with my work computer but now I want to switch to my laptop. how?

I have been syncing my iphone to my work PC and now I want to switch to my laptop for syncing. How?

An iPhone can only sync with one library at a time.  If you do not wish to have your present iTunes library on the home computer replace the one on the phone you will need to put the content of the work library on the home computer so it is still syncing with the same library
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
