I'm afraid of my MacBook? :(

please forgive me if I'm misusing these forums- I'm new! I'll start by saying that I am a (notorious among friends) non-complainer. I am also a huge apple lover. I have the phone, the pad and the computer. My father's industry is very reliant on apple (he's a record producer), and we're definitely loyalists! I always get great customer service. My problem is this: I've had my white 2008 MacBook since November of that year. a few months ago, the head of my charger (the part that meets at the computer) melted. I became concerned when the fan got really loud. My computer got really hot and I went to turn it off. My hand grazed the charger and was burned. I still have a fairly noticeable scar. after the computer was off, I waited for it to cool and then unplugged it from the wall. Later, the cord would no longer charge my computer and was completely warped looking. I went to the apple store, and the guy was impressed with the warping, made note, and replaced the cord, no questions asked. I was pleased. He said they'd recently re-designed the charger heads with metal instead of plastic.
Everything was fine until a week ago, when I woke up and found my charger no longer would power my computer, or my family's macs, either. the end was extremely hot. I took my computer in again when I finally got some time to escape work. My hard drive has also been acting up.. According to the initial diagnostics they ran, my hard drive is fine. My friend who is also an apple genius said that it seems like what's connecting the hard drive isn't working. (he said this all technically. I don't remember his exact words.) he wasn't there when took the computer in. anyway. The problem I had been having was that when I would start up my computer, I'd get a really loud clicking and the folder with a question mark on the screen. This happened about once a week and also occasionally happened while I was using the computer. The screen would go black an then the noise would start.
I told the guy about the charger and the hard drive. He said since the hard drive was ok, it had to be software related. (how would that make the clicking noise happen?) since I also had concerns about the charger, he is keeping it over night to do hardware diagnostics.
my concern is that If everything seems ok with diagnostics, and I just get another charger, what if it does this again? I know it sounds stupid, but I'm almost afraid of it now! I don't want it to burn me again, and I'm a little afraid of it starting a fire! Of course, after they check it out, they could be like, "hey. We found something wrong that's causing the charger to melt. We're gonna fix it." but.. what if nothing comes up? my warranty runs out in November. Am I out o line for praying I get a full unit replacement?
other details, if it helps:
I'm very careful about making sure the charger is plugged in correctly, not twisted, in a ventilated area, and never "yanked" out.
my computer is always on a flat hard surface. In the even I use it while I'm sitting on my bed, I always use one of those lap table top things.
the reason it took me so long to get to the apple store after the second charger died is because I work insane hours and never have a day off. in the mean time, I was mostly using just my iPad or everything, and on the rare occasion I'd have to use my computer, I use a family member's charger, while constantly checking the temperature. (they were scared of my computer killing their chargers, too.) the computer did the clicking thing again when I tried to use my computer this morning.
help!

If you can peel it off, it's not "+an integral piece of the machine+". We do understand that you're being cautious with your expensive new acquisition. The glove box of my new car had a piece of tape on it too. Peel away...
Or, if you really that concerned, follow Allan's astute suggestion and carry it into an Apple Store. I'm sure they will help you, very politely, but I can't speak for what will be said after you leave. (Mind you, a friend once called animal control to ask them to remove what he though was a dead opossum on my property...they very politely told him to be patient, and sure enough, a few hours later it got up and walked away, because as you have probably surmised, it was only "playing 'possum.". I can only assume that he became a running joke at the animal control office... )

  • Power PC G4 - slower to boot since 10.4.9 update (Afraid to update Macbook)

    Hi Everyone,
Just updated my Power PC at work, and now after three re-boots, and after fixing the permissions, my Mac takes longer to boot (almost 45 seconds longer).
I have a new Macbook at home, I am afraid to update it to 10.4.9. I am hearing way to many horror stories on what the update does (fan running all the time, slower boot-ups, eject key not working, running hotter than normal, etc.)
Will it hurt not to update my MacBook? It runs perfect now, and I just do not need the hassle of anything going wrong because of an update to the operating system.
    Thanks

It's starting to sound that way sadly
However, if you've invested in utilities like Disk Warrior, pop in that CD and allow to check your HDD. It might reveal directory structure corruption that's beyond fsck's (i.e. Disk Utility) ability to detect and resolve.
Also please check into my suggestion about verifiation of SMART hard drive diagnostics (in my previous post).
Another helpful utility if TechTool Pro. It can run advanced diagnostics on much of your hardware to ensure it's functioning normally, including a full sector verification of your hard drive(s). I've discovered bad disk blocks from this type of test in this past.
How much RAM do you have installed? If you have more than 1 stick of RAM, please try removing the one closest to the CPU, slide the others down the line, and keep an eye on things. If you have defective/marginal RAM, the OS might be corrupting itself in memory, leading to all kinds of potential problems. Memtest is a great tool to test RAM, but it recommends 5 passes which can take hours to complete: http://www.memtestosx.org/
If it comes down to simply being a corrupt OS X installation, one option you have is Archive and Install, which is a process Apple developed to allow users to make a best-effort at reinstalling the OS with minimal impact to already installed applications and user files: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Though doubtful, you might have an outdated version of Sonnet Cache installed (last release was April 2006, which includes support for OS X 10.4): http://www.sonnettech.com/support/downloads/osxupgradesw.html
Bear in mind I didn't look too deeply into Sonnet's information on this software and your processor. So I'm not sure if your processor even uses the Cache software or not. But if it does, you might want to try upgrading/reinstalling to the latest release. I'd be surprised if this fixed your problem, given how long you've probably been running 10.4.x
Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

  • Does the later 2009 MacBook support the Apple DVI to Video Adapter (s-video). I want to connect it to an old tv which does not support HDMI. Any suggestions?

I have a late 2009 MacBook which I want to connect to an old LG tv. The tv does not support HDMI it only has the (red, while, and yellow) ports. Sorry I dunno the exact name for it.
So I was thinking of using the Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter (s-video), link below...
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/dk/Images/M9319_screen.jpg
But I'm afraid that the MacBook might not support the adapter.
Can anyone give me a solution for this? Is there an alternative way of doing this? I'm kinda new to apple display adapters.

The Late 2009 model 6,1 has a Mini DisplayPort not the Mini-DVI. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When the System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
Composite is the name for the red, white and yellow RCA plugs on your TV or red, white and S-Video plugs. If you want to use the Composite input on your TV there’s no Mini DisplayPort to Composite. You’ll have to get a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=mini+displayport+to+vga&sprefix=mini+Displayport+to and a VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video. http://www.amazon.com/VGA-Adapter-S-Video-Cable-Video/dp/B000Y7T5UU/ref=sr_1_7?s =electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316369974&sr=1-7
Only the Yellow plug or the S-Video plug for video will work. For sound you'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable

  • Hard disk for macbook pro

i want to increase my storage for my macbook pro. i dont know which one to use, either external oone or internal one. i would prefer an internal one. but i am afraid if my macbook (released mid 2010, 4GB RAM,duo core processor,250GB hard disk) will support 1TB storage. Please help me out through this.

I have the same laptop - a mid 2010 i5 MBP. For additional storage I removed my superdrive that rarely got used and installed a 2nd HDD in a caddy designed to replace the optical drive. I now have a SSD for my boot drive and a HDD for file storage - and the superdrive is now in a usb external case for the rare times I need it. I love this setup becasue I get the best of both worlds.

  • Downgrading a 2008 MacBook to 10.4?  Is it impossible?

I am not going to say that 10.5 doesn't have neat features, but the system is not stable. I rely heavily on the freeware 3d program Blender, which runs poorly due to the integrated graphics (or something like that...) built-in to the MacBook and utilized by 10.5 Leopard. For me, this is crippling because I need a portable computer and cannot afford to buy a MacBook Pro.
According to reports, Tiger runs the MacBook graphics in a different way, making it ideal for Blender. However, my MacBook came with Leopard built-in. I'm afraid that my MacBook is physically dependent on an unstable system, and I cannot afford to replace my MacBook with a $2000 MacBook Pro.
Is there any safe way to downgrade to Tiger, or somehow get Leopard to utilize the MacBook's graphics the way Tiger did?

Yeah, my posts there have been automatically deleted. The developers are tired of my whining.
And by the way, this program works on MacBook Pros and other, more expensive, machines with Leopard. According to the moderators on the blender site, this has been Apple's fault. I would tend to agree (like I really have a choice at this point).
Besides, I've installed Ubuntu 8.04, and blender works fine with it. Fancy that: a free system works better and faster than a system put together by one of the most overpriced and greedy companies that I've ever seen. Once I get the wireless and right-click workaround up and running, I plan to abandon this premature system.

How to use iPhoto Library Upgrader

    Hello Terence,
sorry that I come here with a completly different thema but I follow your answers since long and they are always excellent! And I do not know who could help... as I can not find the solution in Apple Support Communities.
I am very afraid with my MacBook Pro: midd. 2012
Prozessor: 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 384 MB
    Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Kernel-Version: Darwin 12.5.0
    iPhoto 11, Version: 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iPhone 4s, 64GB Version:7.0.2 (11A501),
    Symptoms:
    1. I have notice three days ago that Spotlight allways answers I should go to the web when I look for data in my computer. It seems that Spotlight can not find anything from my computer.
    2. Timemachine has no data before the 28th. January 2014 (!?) No idea why this happens
    3. In Finder window when I go to "Alle meine Daten"(= All my data) there is absolutely nothing there...it means 0 objekts are there.
4.In  Systemeinformationen (=Systeminformations) if I go to Software and then to Programs... there is nothig there because the Plug-In do not react quick enough (Das Plug-In hat beim Sammeln dieser Informationen nicht schnell genug reagiert). I am asking me which Plug-In it is and where to find it...
    5. On my iPhone the Photo-stream suddenly shows only 110 fotos from Dezember on, but in My MacBookPro the iPhoto Stream shows of course the lasts 1000 ones...from 25.01.2013 to 03.02.14 as it did allways before.
I am not going to sync anything until I discover what is going on...
    6. On my Contacts suddenly appeared the link address of a "game" in my own card ( both in iCloud and Lokal AddressBook)... and I have never ever played an online game (!?). So I deleted this two links as I discovered them some days ago...
I do not know what is going wrong here but I'm afraid to loose all my data in the computer, so I am making a secure copy in an external drive right now...
Could it be a virus inside... a software problem may be...?
The mayor  Problem is how to get the programms to work (Spotlight, etc), or how to repair them.
I'm trying to find something wrong in the Protocols I have here, for example
    - the Repair protocol for users from 27.01.2012 ( /Users/Begona/Library/logs/fsck_hfs.log).
    - the Datasystem-Reppairprotocol from 01.02. 14 (/var/log/fsck_hfs.log)
    - the Installationsprotocol from 04.02.14...
    but I am really lost.
Thank you very much for reading this, help would be high appreciated

When syncing iPod touch to MacBook, I have selected to sync only events newer than 360 days. Yet I get message that sync will change 8000 events on "this computer"  most of which are years old and many are recurring events.  I'm afraid to proceed with sync.

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

Wifi issues are one of the common issues being reported by users.  There is not much you can do at this point but wait and hope that th 10.8.1 update will address these issues.

You will more than likely need to re-install CS6 after the upgrade, so you might as well uninstall first. Be sure you have your serial number(s) before upgrading or uninstalling CS6..
As for Microsoft Office, I'm not sure.

  • My 2012 MacBook Pro fell and it now makes a clicking noise and shows a grey screen on startup. I'm afraid the hard drive is damaged. Is their anyway to still back up my hard drive even if it doesn't turn on all the way?

So my late 2012 MacBook Pro was sitting on my desk when the desk collapsed. The computer fell with it and I was quite scared at the moment, but thankfully I opened it up and it worked perfectly fine again.
I was later watching a YouTube video and pressed the back button. The screen then froze, and I could not force quit safari. Then this weird clicking noise started to happen. It was coming from the right of the trackpad. That's when I decided to force shutdown the computer with the power button.
I let it sit and then decided to turn it back on. The clicking noise then came back and there was just a blank screen on the boot up. Eventually a grey folder with a question mark started flashing on the screen. That was all it did so I decided to turn it off again.
I'm going to take it into the Apple store ASAP, but I'm curious if my hard drive is damaged and if I will need a new one, which would erase everything on my Mac. So I was wondering if there is anyway to back up the hard driver even if it doesn't boot up all the way, or turn on the computer all the way.
P.S. I have never backed up my hard drive so I wouldn't know what to do.

You may have damaged the HDD which is located in that spot. I would take it in for service.

  • My macbook pro is just over 3 years old now and off and on during this time the screen will just go all black.  Lately this blackout is lasting longer and I was wondering what is causing this.  I am afraid that this will not come back on in the future.

My MacBook pro is just over 3 years old now and the screen has totally blacked out for a few seconds at a time.  It will come back on in a few seconds with the exception this past month it has stayed black for a longer period of time like one minute.  It scares me to think that one of these times it won't come back on.  I have noticed it happens more often when I am using just the battery power.  Does anyone have any idea what causes this?  just to mention my battery was not low when this happens.

    jmckl,
if your MacBook Pro is a 15-inch Mid 2010 model (“MacBookPro6,2”), then it might be exhibiting the defect that is documented on this Apple Support page. If your black screen is due to this defect, then that page states that Apple will service this problem on this specific model of MacBook Pro gratis, for three years from the date of purchase. However, some commenters here have noted that sometimes the servicing is done gratis without having proof of the date of purchase. If you have an Apple Store near you, you might consider bringing your MacBook Pro there to have them check for the presence of this defect.
It is only the 15-inch Mid 2010 model that has this problem; no other model suffers from it.

  • I was wondering if I could use Boot Camp and install Windows 7 on my black Macbook. I don't see where I can tell what year it is from in the about this mac option either...? Please help. I am afraid that my mac is considered vintage now :(

I read somewhere earlier that if my macbook is vintage, then I can't install windows/bootcamp. Maybe this is too big a venture for me to undertake anyway, but just in case I wanted to get a little help before I dig too deep...  I think it was late 2006 or early 2007 when I purchased my black Macbook.

To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
    model 1,1 (Early 2006)
    model 2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007)
    model 3,1 (Late 2007)
    model 4,1 (Early 2008)
model 5,1 (Late 2008, Aluminum Unibody)
    model 5,2 (Early 2009, 2.0GHz Model Only)
    model 5,2 (Mid 2009, 2.13GHz Model Only)

  • I have a macbook air with osx 10.6.8 and it has a 1.4 GHz intel core duo processor and 2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. I want to use icloud but am afraid buying the version of osx that is required will bog my computer speed down, or change the user inerface. I

I am not computer savy and like my macbook air because as a college student, and father that is very busy, I don't have to learn to re-use it every month after it crashes from a virus. Am I able to load the new version of osx that icloud requires onto this computer without changing it substantially or slowing it down?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • I want to get a macbook pro but Im afraid of all these problems

I need to get a new laptop for 3D(Maya) work and some Design.. I want to get a macbook pro but I am very very worried of all these problems Ive been reading about. Whine? Too Hot? sigh....

Well here's a simple solution if you don't feel like sending in your MBP 2, 3, and 4, maybe even 5 times to AppleCare for recurring issues: Wait until the next revision of the MBPs which will hopefully bring about the introduction of the Core 2 Duo (Merom) chips. It shouldn't be too far off in the future and if the new chip is as good as everyone's saying it is, the wait will be well worth it. The CPU whine of my MBP is HORRIBLE and to me it makes the machine utterly useless when I'm working in the lab as I need to concentrate; I'm back on my PowerBook.
I realize that my situation is unique in that I'm working in a sound-sensitive environment. However, I paid the similar price tag on my PowerBook and this machine has been flawless. I bought the AppleCare for it and have yet to send it in for anything. My MBP is maybe 4 months old and has been to Apple's repair depot 4 times. In fact, for the first 2 and a half months of ownership, Apple had my MBP more than I did.
Apple may have fixed the problems by now with their newer MBPs but that's anyone guess, and it's solely a gamble as to what week build MBP you'd get and what kind of problems it will have.
My advice: I strongly recommend waiting if you can. Even if you don't work in a sound-sensitive environment, you will get great peace of mind knowing that your computer will perform, look, and sound like a well-built, $2000+ machine (hopefully).

  • Firewall was off on my MacBook Pro -- Afraid someone hacked into my computer

While I was checking my comcast email this morning (not on Mail but on the comcast website) I heard something that sounded like a door slamming and saw a brief flash.  I subsequently realized that my firewall was off.  I turned it back on and changed my email password.  None of my passwords for any site I go on are saved.  Is there  anything else I need  to do or check to be sure my MacBook Pro (running Yosemite) is safe?  Thanks, Maria

The firewall does absolutely nothing to protect you from malware, so leaving it off is not an issue. It should be off if you're on a private network behind a router.
There is no known malware now in circulation that could be spread merely by checking email.
