I'm finally getting Snow Leopard. Are the problems fixed?

I have an early 2008 iMac 8,1 running Leopard 10.5.8. I have not upgraded because I have not felt the need, but it seems I am getting left behind. I know there were a lot of complaints about Snow Leopard which is one of the reasons I did not get it before. I expect to be getting Lion or Mountain Lion before too long so I need Snow.
There were a lot of complaints about compatibility, crashing, things like that. Did those get pretty much fixed? I have a Time Machine backup drive so I expect no problem keeping hold of my stuff even if I have problems installing.

I'd say 10.6.8 is pretty solid, no problems for me, & certainly better than 10.7 or 10.8, & there's likely to be no more updates past 10.6.8.

Technical issues aside, there's still a legal issue.
Neither 2006 nor 2007 MacBooks shipped with Snow Leopard 'factory' installed. OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard became available in September 2009. So you purchased and installed a Snow Leopard upgrade disc on the 2007 system at some point.
If your Snow Leopard upgrade was a single-user copy, then legally, you need to purchase another one for the second computer. If your Snow Leopard upgrade was a Family Pack 5-user license, then you're good to go.

If you have an active MobileMe account, Apple was giving away a single-user upgrade copy of Snow Leopard for a limited time, and you should have received an email with a link, or been offered the opportunity when you signed in to your MobileMe account on the web:
    http://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/24/free-snow-leopard-discs-for-mobileme-users-n ow-arriving/
Worst case, single-user Snow Leopard upgrade discs are $29 retail, direct from Apple. I'd hate to have two computers and no OS installation CD's for whatever version I'm currently using.

  • Snow leopard - up the hill backwards!

Like some others I have a few issues with Snow Leopard and in some ways I regret the upgrade which I did for Exchange. In reality, (and lets just park this part of the debate for expedience purposes), Mail is not the best nor the most intuitive mail app for using in an enterprise environment...but thats another story.
My main issues with Snow Leopard are the continual crashes around adding attachments, Safari has become unstable, crashing at least once a day and I get an awful lot of beachball activity.
Is it right when I first open the applications folder in Finder that the icons take a few seconds to load as if I have caught them napping?
So I am thinking of doing a complete reinstall and would appreciate some feedback on what is a precarious and nervous step.
I have Time Machine that has been running for some time, I back up to Super Duper only twice a week as the majority of my work is either on iDisk or my company servers.
I would just like some feedback on how I should go about a reinstall.
All my e-mail is exchange based or via me.com and the only other two things precious to me are my family photos and my 25gb music collection.
My main area of concern is when I reinstall from my installation disks I will, I presume, be loading Tiger as that is where my iMac began. Do I then have to install Leopard before Snow Leopard, (although I may not load SL as I was more content with Leopard).
    May thanks for reading this.
    Jon

Before considering reinstallation, try to see if running the applications in question in Rosetta works better.
Go to the File menu -> Get Info and check Use Rosetta after clicking once on any offending application.
Check for disk space issues, and any applications not known to be Snow Leopard compatible*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
If after eliminating the probable, and directory and permissions issues*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And possible third party non-necessary optimization utilities:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1772235
You still run into issues, you only need to erase and install Snow Leopard.
Be careful any applications or drivers you install are not from a previous PowerPC migration assistant install, and installed separately, as this article explains:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=10
But try to isolate your issues down to the base installation, and if they don't occur there, try each application one by one with a reboot in between.

  • How can I get Snow Leopard installation from Greece?

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook 4.1 13"inch (2008) currently running OS X 10.5. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard but the problem is that I cannot find anywhere in Greece to buy the installation disk. There is no greek Apple store, the rest of Apple stores do not ship to Greece.  I really to need to buy the upgrade but I cannot find a way to accomplish.
    Thanks in advance.

If your local dealers no longer have copies, then unless you have a friend or relative in a country that has an Apple Store who could buy a copy for you, you'll need to look for private sellers.
    Regards.

  • Did Snow Leopard aggravate heating problems?

Since installing Snow Leopard I have noticed the following on my otherwise perfectly functioning MBA:
    1) Temperature is constantly at 50° even when idle,
    2) A few minutes of YouTube and system becomes unstable and unresponsive, with fans kicking in at full blast reaching temps of 70-80°C.
Prior to the upgrade, temps were much lower and I never experienced a single core shutdown.
I was wondering if anyone had the same experience.

    Hi Felix,
I figured both of your topics (posted 2 minutes apart) could probably just be answered in one thread. I've upgraded both of my MacBook Airs (1.6GHz/80GB Rev A & 1.86GHz/SSD Rev B) and have noticed no change in day-to-day system performance, cooling/overheating. I've done all the usual "testing" in running YouTube, launching Parallels, playing a game or two and stressing the CPUs in software generated stress tests.
YouTube was always a bit of an issue for my Rev A, from day one. I've always contributed that to the Intel GMA X3100, I find the my Nvidia 9400M machine handles a lot of the struggles found in the Rev A. Unfortunately, a lot of the GPU features of the new OS do not include the Intel GMA X3100 (only the Nvidia 9400M). The Rev C models that I've used/tested are behavior pretty much the same as my Rev B as "under the hood" they're the same machine... just cheaper in the MSRP category.
So no... I wouldn't say Snow Leopard is the problem, at least not inherently with the MacBook Air. One thing you might want to try is running Safari in 32-bit mode, as I noticed when it came to flash intensive pages that Safari was using a lot more system resources in 64-bit mode (when translates into heat, CPU load, etc.). You can toggle Safari by doing a "Get Info" in the /Applications folder on Safari.app and checking the "Use in 32-bit mode" box.

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • I am using Leopard but need  Mountain Lion for the Mac App Store.  How do I get Snow Leopard to be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion?

I am currently using Leopard but need Snow Leopard to be able to get Mountain Lion. I can see this is no longer available from Apple.  How would I get it so I could then get Mountain Lion. I want the Logic 9 Mac App Store App as I don't want to have to buy the whole Logc 9 from Studio 8.
Some help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Adam

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.

  • Where do I get snow leopard 10.6.0... Can't find it in the standard downloads?

where do I get snow leopard 10.6.0... Can't find it in the standard downloads?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

My Mac is a OSX 10.5.8 and i want to upgrade to Lion v10.7.2  Do I have to also get Snow Leopard?  Can the be purchased together?

Yes you have to purchase Snow Leopard first. Once you have it installed then update it to 10.6.8 using the 10.6.8 Update Combo. Once you have updated and thorougly tested your system then purchase the Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store and follow the on-screen prompts.
At the very minimum make sure your computer meets the System Requirements for Lion and make sure you have all your applications up-to-date. As you may (or may not) know PPC based apps will NOT run under Lion so please check your apps to see that they will run under Lion. Please look at the article link below for instructions on how to tell if they will or not.

I face a problem with my macbook air or i think it's from the lion OS cause i didn't happen with snow leopard OS the massage says ( you can't open the application ....... because powerPC applications are no longer supported). any advice ??

Mac OS X Lion has dropped support for Rosetta, the feature that allowed you to run PowerPC apps on previous OS X systems. Check if you can find a newer version of the app you are trying to run that supports Intel processors.
What application are you trying to run? Maybe I can help you find a version that runs on Lion.

You stated; " I have been successful with My Power Mac "
A Power Mac is incapable of being upgraded to Mavericks. It is a PPC Mac which can only run versions of OS X up to 10.5.8 and no higher. Any version of OS X higher that 10.5.8 requires an Intel processor to run.
Does the iMac meet the hardware requirements for Mavericks?

Ian, this might help explain it a bit more:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/07/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-system-requirements/
It's only available from the store, and you need 10.6.6 to access the store. But if you can download it using 10.6.6 on another machine, you'll be able to install it on a machine meeting the hardware requirements (it doesn't matter which OS was installed on it).
