I'm getting a MacBook pro for college and just wanted to make sure I was correct on how to transfer everything to it such as iTunes. All I have to do is turn on home sharing and then log into iTunes on my new Mac right?

I'm getting a MacBook pro for college and just wondered how to transfer/share everything from my desktop pc to my Mac?

home sharing will work but won't transfer playcounts, ratings, and original "date added".
if you wish to keep those, use the instructions in this article here.

  • Niece getting 15" Macbook Pro for college

To help her and my brother out thought I'd ask here about some good bags for a college student with a regular size MacBook Pro.  Something that protects the laptop well, and has a bit of room to put in some of those college textbooks.  Any suggestions?

    Hi s,
Just a starter thought: if she's like most kids going into college these days, she'll want a backpack style.

  • I keep getting "cannot find 'file///c:/programdata//oberon%20media/#######/#########/loading.htm' Make sure path is correct. How do I fix this?

I can get some games to work by going directly through to the Programs directory, but others don't work.
The final error I get is "navigation to the webpage was cancelled". The game provider says it is a firewall issue. I've tried disabling firewalls, even deleting, and it does not seem to help.

Didn't work. Still get the same error messages.

  • I purchased an album from the itunes store on my ipad2 thinking i could retrieve it from my windows pc. I have turned on home sharing and can see my pc library from the ipad but not vice-versa. Is there any way to transfer the album from my ipad library?

I purchased an album from the itunes store on my Ipad2 thinking i could access it from my windows laptop where I sync my ipod. I turned on Home Sharing and can see my laptop libraries from my ipad but not vice versa. Is there any way to fix this so I can transfer the album to the itunes on my laptop?

Yes I tried that. I finally turned off all home sharing settings, shut down my desktop and found them in my account settings in the store on the cloud. So at that point I just had it download everything. But I suspect that with the ipad somehow being on, the store was saying I had already received them? Regardless, my trip today whilst running errands, I was rocking out to vintage Police music! Thank you so much for responding.

  • Where is advanced optio in iTunes on my iPad. Trying to turn on home sharing

Trying to find advanced option in iTunes on the iPod in order to turn on home sharing for our Apple TV box but can't find advanced option anywhere. Help!

    Hi Darrylrichard,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The following articles will show you how to setup Home Sharing on your computer and on your iPad.  What type of iPod do you have?  This will only work with iOS devices.
iOS: Setting up Home Sharing on your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4557
Setting up Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer
To stream your iTunes library to your iOS device, you will first need to enable Home Sharing on your computer.
Note: To stream your iTunes library to your iOS device, you will need iTunes 10.2 or later.
    Open iTunes on your computer.
iTunes 11 and later: Choose File > Home Sharing > Turn on Home Sharing.
iTunes 10.2 through 10.7: Choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing.
Enter the Apple ID and password that you use for the iTunes Store, then click Create Home Share. You need to enter the same Apple ID and password on your computer and your iOS device.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 on each computer you want to use for Home Sharing.
Now that you've set up Home Sharing on your computer, follow the instructions below to set up and use Home Sharing on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
Setting up Home sharing on your iOS device
Tap Settings > Music or Settings > Video to enable Home Sharing.
Note: Enabling Home Sharing in either setting will enable Home Sharing for both types of content.
In the Home Sharing section, enter the same Apple ID and password you entered on your computer (or computers) and tap the return button.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

If I changed my Apple ID password on my iphone then log into itunes on my phone with that new password, would it automatically sync to my laptop or would i need to put the new password into my laptop also? My laptop got stolen so I changed my password and wanted to be sure it's safe to enter in the new one on my phone. I don't want it to snyc to my laptop.

    Hi loro,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I'm sorry to hear that your laptop was stolen. Changing your password was a good step.
Entering your new password on your iPhone will not affect the laptop, as mentioned in this article:
    Apple ID: Changing your password
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5624
The next time you use an Apple feature or service that uses Apple ID, you'll be asked to sign in with your new Apple ID password.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

I already bought mac book pro last year but it can't view windows just like mac pro for education. I want to make like mac pro for education How?

First, if you have a MACBOOK PRO (a laptop), you should post in that forum. MAC PRO (desktop) and Macbook Pro are different things, so when you use those terms interchangeably, it's impossible to know what you're talking about.
Second, even guessing that you have a laptop, I still have no idea what your question means. Are you trying to load Microsoft Windows on it? Every Mac can run Windows using either Boot Camp or Parallels/Fusion/VMWare solutions. Please explain in more detail what you're trying to do, and we'll try to help. But post in the Macbook Pro forum if you're talking about a laptop.

  • I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it. help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks

I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it.
Is it not possible to create a text box, fill it with dynamic (data driven) text, but make the font size either scale up or down automatically, so that the entire text box is filled? This is a feature in PrintShop Mail Pro called COPY FIT. but no such feature in Indesign??
help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks, DJ

lol... it seems to work, but I have another huge problem!
Apparently .CSV files cannot contain page breaks in the data! The data I am trying to merge is a 'letter', with paragraphs, line breaks, etc.,
But, after data merging, it ignores page breaks and only merges the first paragraph of each letter. (sigh)
Solution? Hopefully, an EASY solution. lol as we have thousands of records.
Is there a third party indesign plugin that will allow .xml, or .xls data merge import??
    Thx,
    DJ

  • Hi, i want to use my iphone as a remote for my itunes i have downloaded the app, turned on home shareing on my laptop and they dont seem to be talking.

    hi,
i have dowloaded the app "remote" to use my iphone as a remote for my itunes library, i have turned on home shareing on my laptop. they dont seem to be talking to each other. i have also tried the other way of adding a library on my iphone, but my laptop wont show my phone on the devices list.
    anyhelp would be apreciated

Turn off home sharing, you don't need that. Open Itunes Preferences from the computer. Go to the devices section. At the bottom you will see the option to add a remote access that and follow the steps.

  • I turned on home sharing, and it doesn't show up in my library. I tried switching it off and it still won't show up. I know other itunes are open and they don't show up in my itunes. What do I need to do? I have the newest version of itunes

I have the latest version of itunes. I turned on the home sharing, and it asked for my ID and everything and it said it loaded. Then I went to open another library up  and I don't know if the library is available to me. How do I get to the other library from my computer? I'm using the same home sharing username and password, but i don't see it. The other library has the latest version as well.

If you click View, Show Sidebar you will see the other libraries under Shared in the left hand column. Click on the Library you want and you can expand it to select Music, Movies etc. Select whatever items you want and click import if you want to move them to your Library.
You will have to have all computers authorised with the relevant Apple ID's
    Store  >  Authorise this computer...
This is separate from the Home Sharing username and password and is to allow playing of DRM Movies, TV shows etc from the other computer.
If both Computers use the same apple id this step is not required.

  • What is best antivirus software for Mac Mini? Recently the Trovi virus was on my computer and I want to make sure it is completely gone.

What is the best antivirus software for Mac Mini?  I had thought Mac's were safer from viruses but recently I think the Trovi virus infected my computer, I have taken steps to remove but want to make sure computer is clean.

To learn how to defend yourself from the threat of adware read How to install adware.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver movies or other copyrighted content "for free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.
