I'm Getting Lost in this Upgrade

I did an SL upgrade yesterday and got a bit lost. I had 2 goals in mind: (1) Upgrade to SL and (2) remove the bootcamp partition, create a larger one and reinstall windows.
I deleted the Windows partition previously created by Bootcamp and backed up my OS X files using Time Machine. I then did the SL upgrade. The upgrade went fine, but I was unable to create a new Windows partition using bootcamp, receiving the following message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I did some reading here on this topic, created an image of my disk using Carbon Copy Cloner and then inserted the original MacBook Pro setup disk that came with my computer and tried to find the correct area in utilities to accomplish the above directed task. After several tries and failure to find the correct utility, I can no longer boot off the MacBook Pro setup disk. The boot screen appears after holding down the option key and when I select the startup disk, after a short time the screen becomes distorted and shows a blue/black/white jagged display.
My computer is running SL properly, but I'm unable to do the format and SL reinstall to try and set up a bootcamp partition for Windows. As a secondary issue, if I reformat the disk successfully, can I just do a fresh SL instal or do I have to instal OSX and then do the upgrade again to SL?
Can anyone help? My appointment at the Genius Bar is a day away.

The error means you are trying to create a Windows partition that is too large with respect to the amount of contiguous space available on the drive. Try creating a smaller Windows partition.
This generally occurs because there isn't sufficient contiguous space which may be due to disk fragmentation as well as trying to create too large of a partition. If there is enough space available but you cannot create a larger Windows partition, then try defragmenting the drive. The easiest and simplest way to do this is to create a bootable clone on an external hard drive. This can be done as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive.
Source means the startup drive.
Boot from the clone by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. After startup is completed open Disk Utility and erase your main drive, then restore your clone. This will produce a defragmented system drive. You can now restart the computer which will boot from your internal hard drive. You should now be able to create your Windows partition.

    I know that SuperDuper is free for an "Erase & Install" but to get the full features you have to purchase. You can do an "Erase & Install" as many times as you like without paying.
    I thought that CCC was also free for the first clone as well, but it seems you have to give your credit card first to use their trial version then request a refund.
    Since a clone is an important step before upgrading to Mavericks, having a free option might get users to clone their old drive first.
    That said, personally, I prefer CCC - for one thing, they will create or update a recovery partition which SD will not.
    Since I have the recovery drive by default on my main drive, it's not a big issue for me to have one on my external drive that holds my clone. Good thing we have choices.

    i am not in a great situation right now... despite the fact that i had believed that my home was stable, apparently my room-mate had different ideas, and has really (don't want to be rude, so i'll just say censored) me - but i've managed to pull the pieces together (much to his surprise) and am in fact i a way better position for this upcoming move than he is.
    but... to my issue. i have (or had... i have disconnected the whole thing) Airport Network in this place - had my share of problems with it, but overall it's working okay now for what i wanted it to do. but with the change in status in our friendship, i want to make some changes to the access levels of my network.
    it may seem petty of me, but if since he felt no conscience about pulling the rug out from under me with just two weeks notice, i don't feel bad about what i'm doing. i have disconnected the internet from my Airport Network, and am accessing it directly on my own - just to make his life here a bit more difficult. afterall, if he can leave me in a scramble, why should i let him use my internet connection...
    but to the point. while i have disconnected the internet, i do still want to use both my USB printer and AirTunes.
    is there a way i can have my Airport Extreme still control my Printer, connect to the Express which is connected to my stereo, without either of them being connected to the internet? any time i try to set this up, i get errors, and Airport Admin will say it cannot read the settings of one or the other. And of course, (for anyone who has seen my other posts re: the Express in particular) the Express has once again entered into its (apparent) default mode of flashing amber combined with its petulant I Will Not Reset, No How, No Way!! mode. Sigh...
    I am planning on picking up the new base station after it is released, but will be making my move first, and would like to have my network set up in the new place when i get there.
    any ideas? or have i just gotten too convoluted for my own good?

    you know, i can see in the manuals, etc... how this should work. but getting these two Airports to cooperate is another matter. once again, i cannot get either one of them to reset to factory settings... i do want to start them fresh, but following the instructions, even with them attached to the book directly via ethernet. the extreme just will not reset at all, and keeps coming back up with the same settings as before. if i try to use Airport Admin to change the configuaration, it delivers an error message that it can't read the configurations setting.
    the express on the other hand... at one point last night i thought i had actually managed to do what i wanted with it, and that it had taken the factory reset. at that point, i had decided to set them both up as individual networks rather than try to join them together - but once the Express as detached from the book, and set up by the stereo, it went back to the flashing Amber light and will not communicate with the MacBook.
    for now i am thinking of packing them both up until after the move. once i know where i am going, etc... and have moved myself, i will be better able to concentrate on what i am doing, and will hopefully be able to get it working again at the new place.

    out of the mess ...
    - even with EFI32 : re-installed MySQL x86_64 arch
    - got rid of Apple's Rails framework
    - re-built Ruby 1.8.7 (i386 arch) with Readline 6.0 ! and icon lib...
    - re-installed Rails 2.3.4 + gems (all i386 arch)
    - re-installed mysql gem with x86_64 arch
    notice this mix between i386 and x86_64 arch.... be my guest !

    The default about:home page in Firefox 4 doesn't give such features. You can set the home page to http://www.google.ca to get that possibility. The results page has a "Pages from Canada" link in the side menu at the left.

    You don't have the game or the game data?
    Games can be redownloaded in the App Store app. If the game offers in-app purchases, there is a setting in the game that allows you to redownload past purchases.
    If you haven't back up, my first question is why? Even if you get the game back, your progress may not be retained. You may still have hope if the developers save your user progress either on their serers or in Game Center. You can only try and hope that is the case.

    If your Mac and PC are connected by Ethernet, unplug and plug that cable again. If not, you have to turn off the MacBook by holding the Power button.
    In the next startup, try to transfer your files again. It's important not to interrupt the transfer process, because in most cases, you will stop it and you won't be able to resume it

    I haven't gotten a new sim card because the problem has been presenting itself in various cards not only mine. So far, all I've done is reset my network settings.
    Last night, I turned off the 3G tab and it had all the signal bars. Today, I did the network reset and it's working apparently. But like I said before, previously the bars just disappear and the iphone only has the 3G activated.

    Purchase a couple of these when they go on sale.
    Start burning all the photos onto DVDs. 
    At least you'll have all your photos if your computer, time machine or any other backup you use goes bonkers.

    If you don't want recents in your App Switcher screen:
    Settings => Mail, Contact, and Calendars => Scroll down to Contacts => Show in App Switcher => Turn off Recents and Favorites too if you don't want them in the App Switcher.

    Retail Leopard disc looks like this;
    (The disc itself has the same logo). If the one you've got is grey it simply won't work.
    Given the retail and second hand prices of Leopard (usually some on Amazon MP), you'll probably find it cheaper to go directly to Snow Leopard, although there could be software updates and printer driver problems that could nullify the difference.
