I'm getting the infamous 'Files Cannot be Moved" error when partitioning

I'm on my Intel iMac, and currently have 186.55 GB of free space on my hard drive. I wanted to make a 32 GB partition for Windows Vista, but I keep getting the error message telling me back up my info and format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (which it already is). I did have VMware Fusion installed, but I deleted it after I found out that it can cause this problem.
At one point, I was actually successful at creating a 15 GB partition, but upon trying to install windows, it told me I needed to have at least 21 GB free for some reason. So I deleted that partition and tried to create a new 32 GB partition. But once again I got the same message from Boot Camp telling me that "Some files couldn't be moved".
I'd rather not have to defrag my HD (unless you can point me towards some defraging software for Mac), and I've tried deleted plenty of huge files that were several gigs in size.
I'm at a loss here, so are there any other solutions out there?

Not a computer expert, but in recently installing Leopard and then boot camp, I've experienced a lot of the common issues discussed on this forum (mail issues for leopard and "files cannot be moved" with boot camp). I followed the idefrag path (paid the $30), created the bootable dvd, ran it (took less than two hours), freed up only a GB or two, but I was able to then partition my drive (15GB for Windows) without an issue and installed windows xp pro without a single issue. It took a bit of time, but I would say it beats reformatting your HD. Whether or not you "should" have to defrag a mac, the reality is that boot camp wouldn't work before I defragged, but worked smoothly afterwards. Definitely worth giving it a shot.

  • I am getting the "Original File Cannot Be Found" error with 4000 exclamation points.  Please help...

To start from the beginning I originally kept my iTunes library on my internal hard drive.  However, it was getting large and I needed to move it so I moved it to an external drive.  Then I recently upgraded my internal hard drive to a 1 TB hard drive so that I would have plenty of space for everything.  I then moved my iTunes library to the new drive, or so I thought.  It is all technically there.  (As you can see from the bottom screen shot.)  However, for some reason iTunes is looking in the trash for a good portion of my library.  (I have 4400+ songs and 4000+ of them are showing the exclamation point and this error.)  I know that I must have done all of the moving around incorrectly.  (I followed directions from some blog I googled, big mistake.)  Now I just want to get my library how it should be.  All back together on this new internal drive with no dups etc.
I have over 4000 songs giving me this error.  I can go in one by one on each song and find it in the iTunes Media folder.  But I certainly don't want to do it that way.  Here is the info on where the song(s) seem to be currently:
Here's a shot of my preferences:
Just FYI, I know that apparently iTunes is looking for this music in the trash.  However, if I go here:
Then I find the music there as well.  (Which is where it is in my preferences.)
Please help!  I don't want to have to go through over 4000 songs and update them one by one.  The music is apparently in both the trash and in my iTunes media folder.  How do I get iTunes to look for these 4000+ songs in the right place without going in one by one to fix them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Hi JJuniper,
When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:
iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1408
Alternatively, if your media was downloaded from the iTunes Store, you may be able to download it again free of charge. You'll want to first delete the tracks from your list in iTunes, then access the purchased page:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Recently purchased song and another I transfered into my ITunes library vannot be set up in a playlist.I get the message"file cannot be located".Originally I could listen to the purchased song but now that will no longer play. What do I need to do to ?

Recently purchased a song from ITunes and another that I downloaded from a CD will not transfer to a playlist and will not even allow me to listen to the songs.I get the message "file cannot be located"What can I do to get my system to locate the file?Originally I could play the songs from my desktop and I was able to transfer to my IPad.

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

When I go to play a movie, I get prompted that the original file cannot be found.  When I do a search on spotlight it cannot be found, but it does appear in my purchases.  How do I re-download when it does not appear that it is allowed?

    Hello paddyrb154,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your purchased movie in iTunes on your iMac.  It sounds like iTunes thinks the movie is on your computer, but it is not located in the iTunes Media folder.
For an issue like this, I recommend deleting the movie from iTunes and downloading it from the iTunes Store again.  Use these steps to delete the movie:
    Mac or PC
    Launch iTunes.
From the Library pop-up menu, choose Movies.
Click Movies in the navigation bar.
Click the movie you want to delete.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
In iTunes 11, the movie cover art will remain visible, but a cloud icon will appear on it to allow you to download the item again (in countries that support this).
How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5772
Once you have deleted the movie, you can click on the cloud icon to download the movie again.  If you do not see the cloud icon, use the steps in the section titled “Download previous purchases on Mac or PC ” in the following article to download the movie from your list of past purchases in the iTunes Store:

  • "The iPod **** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" Error

    Hello,
Upon doing a 'zero-all bits' reformatting of my 5G iPod with Disk Utility and using the 'Restore' feature in iTunes 7, every time I sync my iPod with iTunes, I get an error message after the sync in the form of
"The iPod ** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found"
and photos, contacts, and calendars are not synchronizing. I tried a second 'Restore' attempt but to no avail. Previous to reformatting my 5G iPod, I've not seen this error message.
I would be grateful if someone could offer any clues. Many thanks.

    A little update.
Upon reinstalling iTunes 7, deleting my iTunes-related .plist files, and reparing permissions on my hard drive, I can now sync my contacts and calendars with my 5G iPod.
As for Photos, the "required file cannot be found" error seems to be due to the default setting in the 'Photos' tab, 'Sync photos from:' pull-down menu to 'iPhoto'. If I choose my 'Pictures' folder, photo synchronizing works, albeit including everything in my iPhoto library, including originals and modified versions of the photos.
I can only surmise that the default setting for synchronizing photos is somehow buggy in iTunes 7. I guess I'll just wait for an update.

  • I'm finding that songs that I have imported to Itunes are suddenly showing with "Exclamation" marks and Itunes tells me that the original file cannot be found.  When I tell it to locate the file, it can't do it.

I'm finding that songs that I have imported into Itunes and played before are suddenly showing an"Exclamation" mark and Itunes tells me that the original file cannot be found.  When I tell it to locate the file, it can't do it.  I went to the Itunes help for locating files, but that still won't do it.  It seems that somehow they are getting deleted, but not by me that I know of.
    Can anyone help me?

Maybe you rename it. Somehow the path to the songs have changed if not deleted.
In Finder go to "Macintosh/Users/username/music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music" that's where all your songs located so if those songs are not there you get an exclamation mark. You can delete those entries in iTunes and re-import again.

  • TS1424 is any else getting a "your purchase cannot be completed error" when purchasing anything on apple tv, or iTunes, or the app store.

I am getting a "your purchase cannot be completed error" when I try to buy something on the app store or itunes.  I sent an email to apple on saturday and no one has responded.  I haven't had a problem to date buying anything on the app store or itunes.  has any else gotten this error?

I have the same issue to. I buy gems frequently for a game that I play, then started getting that message. Frustrating cus the item that I want to buy has a limit on it and i don't want to miss it.
It is my money and I do as I please, and no up to Apple in limitting the amount you can spend.

  • "Disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" NO RECOVERY PARTITION

After defragmenting my disk the old-fashioned way, I lost my recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get it back.
That was in an attempt to create contiguous space for Boot Camp Assistant. While that error is now solved, a new one has popped up: it says some files cannot be moved.
I am hesitant to repartition the entire drive again. Is this the only thing to do at this point?
I tried running FSCK from single user mode. It didn't help. I can run disk utility from an external backup drive, but isn't that the same as FSCK? I'm honestly not sure so please answer if you know!
    (Click thumbnail to enlarge)

You just run Boot Camp Assistant and that downloads drivers.
Using Disk Utility does not setup the Master Boot Record for native dual boot.
    BCA or CampTune does.
If you had 10.6.x DVD that has Apple drivers (wish they would just NOT call them also "boot camp" it confuses people).
Print and read the pdf, the FAQ, the install guide.
    Draw inside the lines.
Boot from Windows 7 to format.
But yes a lot of people can avoid and still use most non-gaming, non-3D or hardware gobbling resource intensive apps with a VM.

  • "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" error

So I am trying to partition my macbook pro and it says that it is already journaled (I think?) but I get this error message
"Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
Any help? I tried going into disk utility to journal it but I can't click the enabling journal button. I just want to partition enough space to put the Zune software on my laptop (please let's not hate on my Zune and focus on the problem at hand) I've been trying 20 GB but I don't know if that is the problem. I do have enough free space to do this too.
    Thanks,
    Lauren

Can you explain a little more about what you are trying to do?
assuming you are talking about Microsoft Zune then there is no Macintosh version, do you have Windows installed? (that's where the partition comes in) if not you're going to have to install it then install the Zune software.
If you already have Windows installed then install the Zune software there. (Please note that Zune requires XPSP3 minimum)

  • CS6 The selected file cannot be linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's t

I understand there is another posting in this forum with the same error happening on CS5 and their solution had something to do with Quicktime.  Mine has nothing to do with this.
I ran into this exact same problem in CS6 and I found that the issue is because I renamed the root project folder.  My folder structure is like this:
    Drive C:\
      -> [root project folder]
                -> [folder containing videos]
                -> MyProject.prproj
By renaming the root project folder, I was no longer able to open up the project successfully.  It would get to certain clips and ask about where the clip was located.  Trying to re-link it to the correct file would result in that error (which makes no sense if you think about it).
So my question is, is it intentional that the absolute folder paths are saved into the project file rather than relative paths?  Does it not make more sense if paths were saved relative to the root project path?  That way the root project folder could be renamed to whatever you want and it would have no effect on the project itself.

I had this problem and have found a solution / workaround:  my issue was when trying to open a cs5 project that had been collected on mac and then transfered to pc, my footage was all png image sequences but this will hopefully work in other situations...
Open the project and cancel the first dialogue box that pops up where you get the "file cannot be linked" error when trying to reconnect footage.  The project will open and then in the project panel, right click on any footage that needs reconnected and choose "Replace footage..." this will open a dialog that will allow you to select the file that gave you the error in the first place without any issues.  Any sequences with that footage will now work and everything show be all good.
You may experience "Offline material is present in this export and will be encoded using the offline media graphic" on first export but apparently you can just ingore that, but i guess it's woth testing a few short sections before commiting to a huge render...
This workaround isn't perfect as i had about 50 pieces of footage i had to relink via this method one by one but at least it saved redoing the edit which was critical for my project...
    good luck!

Can anyone help with the error message I'm getting 'the selected file cannot be linked because it has 2 audio channels and the clip was created with 1 audio channel'. I had to move the footage to another folder and now am unable to link it - just getting this error message instead.... Has anyone had to deal with this before?
    Thank you!

  • CS5 The selected file cannot be linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's t

    Greetings,
I have been working on a very large project using CS5 on my desktop computer. Now I am on the road and bought a laptop so that I can continue to work. I placed all of my assets on a back-up external 2tb drive (which I was able to open without incident on my desktop). I installed CS5 on my new laptop and now when I try to open the project I get the following message "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)". This message appears before I indicate the path to any of the assets. Then, when I do indicate the path to each asset, I get the same message for individual files.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

  • I'm having a "Scanner communication cannot be established" error when trying to scan to my iMac.

    Hi,
I have an HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium printer connected via wireless to my iMac running the latest version of OS X Lion. I can print with no problems but when I try to scan using HP Scan 3 I get the "Scanner communication cannot be established" error plus the following additional information...
"HP Officejet 6700 is currently unavailable. Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If these conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again"
Scan to Computer in HP Utility is enabled and other features as well and they work fine but when I use HP Scan 3 to scan there's no way I could get it to work. I tried rebooting my iMac and the printer. Also I have the latest drivers and firmware installed.  Please advice.

Is the HP software on your Mac the right version for Lion?
    Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Try scanning from Image Capture in your Applications folder.  Select your scanner on the left, then click "Show Details" and finally "Overview" to start the process.

Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get this message whenever I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon. I've never gotten it to work and even uninstalled it and then redownloaded it and still cannot get it to open. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Are you installing from the official site? http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
If you use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to check that path, is the Mozilla Firefox folder there? That is the normal installation location, but I think it's worth checking.
If the folder isn't there or firefox.exe is not in it, I wonder whether some other software might be interfering. You might want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:
