I'm having a nightmare with V40z under RHEL 4 update 2!

i have noticed that most of you trying to be very helpfull, i appreciated that really.
I have to work with sun V40z in my company, RHEL 4 update 2 has to be installed in that machine. Problem: Installing RHEL AS V4 Update 2 on V40z results in very slow 2D graphics (e.g. just moving a window around). One CPU (of 4) is permanently around 50-100% as the window are moved. A linux 'top' command clearly shows that it is 'X' (windows) that is taking all the CPU - so we suspect a graphic driver problem.
i have tried using the RHEL drivers supplied by Sun Microsystems with the V40z, however these will not install on RHEL update 2, the driver installation recognises update 2 and reports that the drivers are only supported on Update 1.
I am not too sure where the problem is! is it only drivers!? or i did something wrong?i have spent the whole last week trying to solve this problem searching in different froums and trying countless hints!!
i have tried to switch the graphic drivers to VESA generic instead of Trident Blade 3D but that didnt solve the problem, it actually made it worst!
any help would be appreciated!

I have several v40z's running RHEL 3, not 4, but I'll take a stab at it.
RHEL 4 is a supported OS according to the SUN compatibility matrix, so that isn't an issue.
First, I'll assume that you loaded the full RHEL4 distro, and didn't leave anything out like KDE of GNOME or other desktop packages.
Then, what typically causes poor graphics performance is a driver that is unable to address the screen properly, and uses lots of CPU to 'render' in a next best fit manner graphics instructions that it cannot do natively. This is typically done when a graphics driver for that specific graphics chipset is not found and a default driver is used just to get the system going. The logic is like this: I'll try x, no, doesn't work, try y, no, doesn't work, take the default z which is a really barebones graphics driver that does straight VGA.
I would get the specification for the graphics card on the v40z. Say it is an Nvidia card. Then I'd go the the nvidia site and download the latest linux driver for that card, and load it on top of the RHEL supplied driver.

Help - I'm having a nightmare with BT

I have spent so many hours on the phone to BT over the last 3 weeks it is unbelievable.
I called originally on the 25th Feb to change some things on my account ( I wanted to resign my broadband, cancel off the 4.99 security that I had never used and cancel one of the two lines I have coming into the property and renumber the remaining line to the one that I wanted cancelled).
Someone ( I have his name) said he would do this for me and then call me back the next day to get the line requests sorted out (as I had to get off the phone as a customer had came in). The next day came and there was no call. I then received a letter that the line I wanted cancelled had been resigned for 5 years! So I called up and tried to speak to the guy from Skelmersdale again, couldnt get to him so someone took the details of my call and created an issue with ref No IMP1182842. The guy called me back 2 days later and we went over the call, he remembered speaking to me and apologised for getting it wrong then said he would get the 5 years taken off and put through the request I asked for with the lines. He said it would take 48 hours or so but he would email me when it had been done. No email came
I kept checking the line and after 4 days I realised that nothing had been done. So I call again, can't get to him again, someone takes my details, tells me they can see he is in office and online so they will send him a message. Eventually they say he has responded and he will call me that day. The rep on the phone said he would send me a 2 way text and if the guy from Skelmersdale didnt call back I had to reply to the text and he would chase. No 2 way text arrived so I couldnt get back to him.
Then I call again, go through the same tedious explanations to a completely new person, Again he sends a message to the guy at Skelmersdale who then calls me that day. I explained that he still hadn't done what he said he would do as both lines were still active and he said that he would physically go up to the team that would do this request and he would make sure it was done within 24 hours this time and he would call me back before the day is out to confirm that it had been done. I received no call back and the line requests werent actioned.
So I need to call again, speak to someone new, he sends a messgae to this guy and his manager, they guiy said his manager is now dealing with this and that he would be in touch before 1500 that day. This person also says they will send a 2 way text. This text arrives this time. Unsurprisingly, I do not get a call by 1500 so I send a text saying so. I don't get any reply but this was 1500 on Friday just gone so I thought I would give it till Monday as it says 2 hours on the text. on Monday at 1000 I text back again saying I still havent received anything from the manager at Skelmersdale. I have still not had a call back from this 2 way text.
So I need to call again, through the same process with another new person, they tell me they will take ownership and send a message to the manager asking why he hasn't responded to me. She said she was going to be off on Tuesday but she would call me 1st thing on Wednesday morning to check if he had called. She also said she would send a 2 way text. I told her that this process hadn't worked before but she said there's no reason why it wouldnt work as they use this system all the time and she would call me back regardless on Wednesday anyway (today). I never received the 2 way text from her.
It is now 1116 and I just can't bring myself to speak to anyone in your company again. The incompetence is staggering. The level of customer care is atrocious and nobody take ownership of problems, they are always passed off elsewhere. I am hoping one of the mods on this site can help because I can't face going through this whole debacle with someone new again.
I am a small business owner and I shouldnt have to go through all this for a relatively simple request

Hello everyone,
My dad asked me to upadte his iphone for him and I just can't get it to work now.
I backed the iphone 4 up on itunes and then ran the update, initially when it had finished it wouldn't allow me to access my wifi so I looked that up and re-enetered the details and that is now working but it keeps asking me to either restore or set up as a new phone, I have restored from itunes while the sync is going through it stayes on a connected to itunes page and then just says connect to itunes so it looks like the restore doesn't work. Itunes seems to be going through the motions on the top bar but I just can't get off these white set up screens. What seems odd is that I disconnected the iphone and then reconnected it and it took me to iphoto and imported photos from the phone so there must be data on it. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Where did you get the phone? Sounds like it may have been hacked to unlock it. If it was originally carrier locked, ONLY the original carrier can authorize unlocking it. FYI: The Gevey SIM is illegal in every country on the planet.

Having Multiple Issues with the 3.0 firmware update.

Just thought I would share a copy of my feedback here to see if anyone else is having some of the 5 issues I am having since I upgraded. I have been "using" (more like fighting with) the 3.0 update since its release. Here is what I sent to apple (most of it):
+I purchased the 3.0 update almost the day it was released. I have now used my iPod Touch a couple of months and I must say that there are some serious issues that need to be addressed, and soon. And a google search seems to show I am not the only one with problems, including those listed in your very own forums. So in order to make sure that I go through proper channels, I will list them here:+
+1) WiFi Connectivity. Since the upgrade, my iPod drops wifi connections for no apparent reason. Wifi says its connected and can't access pages. It seems to turn on/off randomly, even when I am only 5 feet from the router. I have followed directions for resetting the network, restarting my router, wiping the iPod and even did a complete restore of the 3.0 firmware. Still the same issues. These were not issues in version 2.2.1.+
+2) YouTube (or more aptly the application that plays YouTube videos) keeps hanging up. The progress bar that shows how much of the video has been buffered will go somewhere between 30 and 75 percent complete, then hang. the video will play to that point and stop. In order to get past that point I have to close the video app and reload the clip, then I have to move the location "dot" to where it stopped so it will buffer from there. If I do not move it, guess what, it stops at the same exact frame the second time around. Also the buffer progress moves forward, and then sometimes jumps all the way back for no reason. This was not an issue in 2.2.1.+
+3) Screen rotation seems to only work about 2/3 of the time. Sometimes in Safari, I will rotate the screen and it will still say where it was and my only remedy is to restart Safari.+
+4) Battery life is shorter. Now I know the batteries wear out over time, but a 30% decrease in battery life since the very day I installed the update is not coincidence. I have disabled push applications and even wifi, and still have a decrease in battery life with no change in use. Again, this was not an issue in 2.2.1+
+5) System hang-ups. Even with just the apps that come with the iPod (no 3rd party apps from App Store) I still get system locks that force me to power off the ipod and restart it. Even with almost all my ipod full of App Store apps and audio/video I did not have this problem in 2.2.1+

You probably did everything except upgrading your router or your router firmware. 3.0 is very sensitive to outdated router firmware and will exhibit the problems you have experienced.

See #1. YouTube functionality is highly dependent on WiFi connectivity.

Mine has done this a few times as well. A restart or reset usually corrects the problem.

There have been sporadic problems reported but I have never experienced anything like this. Restoring the iPod as new will rule out software issues.
+5) System hang-ups. Even with just the apps that come with the iPod (no 3rd party apps from App Store) I still get system locks that force me to power off the ipod and restart it. Even with almost all my ipod full of App Store apps and audio/video I did not have this problem in 2.2.1+
Again, a restore as new will correct 99+ percent of these. You can always force kill an app by holding down the Home button until you return to the home screen. This will keep you from having to restart.

Apple doesn't post fixes except in the Tech Library. Search Support and you will find lots of helpful articles to correct issues.

This is really too bad. I've used PCs for years and really never have suffered too badly from the experience - but I'm a fanatic about keeping my OS updated, virus scans current, and firewalls working. And throw in malware scans as well. I've also found most users don't have a clue how to keep their PCs "clean".
A year and a half ago, I bought an iMac and could not be happier and less worried about all of the potential PC threats out there.

When I update my 3GS to iOS 5.0.1.
After that,I can't not find any wifi signal at the same place.
But before update,there are at least three different signal i can find and use.

Having an issue with the latest Indesign CC update and Easy Catalog plugin.

After the latest CC update I had this strange behavior start occuring. I have multiple pages that load in data and images via Easy Catalog, I've been using the same pages for years without any issues, within the past couple days I've noticed that now, when I run "Update Easy Catalog Fields" on a book all of the images get loaded in at about 25% of their size. If I instead run "Update Document" on a single file it loads in correctly. Any one else having similar issues?

Having a problem with eBooks in my iTunes library.

As the title says, I'm having some problems with the iTunes library not reflecting what's actually on the disk.
I add the ebook and it seems to add ok. The file gets consolidated into /mymusic/books under the author correctly, but the book is missing from the library. The book is in ePub format, and seems to have the right file extension and shows up as a file of "ePub" type in windows explorer.
Any ideas? Is there a way to re-build the library or a portion of it?

I have upgraded Apple Aperture from version 2 to version 3 and I'm having a problem with the "Highlights and Shadows" adjustment. According to the user's manual, I should have access to an advanced disclosure triangle which would allow me to adjust mid contrast, colour, radius, high tonal width and low tonal width.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to access this advanced section, I'd be most grateful.

Hi David-
The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

Having a problem with mini dvi to hdmi. Can see the background, but must move all screens all the way to the right to see on tv. Any solutions?

I'm having an issue with setting up mini dvi to hdmi. I can connect and see the background picture from my macbook (approx 4 years old) but in order to see any screens or video, I have to move the screen almost all the way off the macbook display to the right. Any ideas why this would happen? Also, there is no audio, although when I bought the adapter and cable at the Mac store, they assured me it would handle both.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Displays on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will makethe second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in ClamshellMode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
No Mini-DVI adapter can carry audio. The only MacBook that sends audio is the Mid 2010 model 7,1 through a Mini DisplayPort.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

I am having a problem with Windows Fusion installed on a MacBook.

I am having a problem with Windows Fusion installed on a MacBook OS 10. When attempting to use a Browser, (either IE, or Chrome), under Windows Fusion, I cannot browse to ANY page except Gmail.com.
I checked all security settings, and found no problem. Neither browser will allow me to do ANYTHING other than go to Gmail.com!!!
I am not sure if I have some virus on my Windows side, because Google and Safari both work perfectly on my Apple side, just not when running Windows Fusion.
Is there some setting I am missing, or do you think I have malware/virus issues?? My Internet connection is DEFINITELY working fine - I can send, receive, open, and close all my email on Gmail only, and can navigate freely on Gmail, but cannot get to any other site even hyperlinked to Gmail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've already tried my previous suggestions, it may be that something has tampered with the DNS settings in your Windows VM, which might bypass the settings your Mac uses. Assuming you're using Windows 8, these instructions explain how to check and change the DNS settings. There's also a link in those instructions listing a variety of suggested DNS settings. If you do try changing the settings, record what the settings currently are in case you want to return to them.

Anyone else having an issue with TCP connections using iCloud for Windows?

Before I asked this question, I did wait to see if any related questions came up, but none did, so I submit it now.
On my admittedly older laptop running Windows 7 64b Home, I've run into difficulties with the iCloud for Windows app to the extent that I had to uninstall it.
It would that, as my laptop was running, in the background, iCloudServices.exe would endlessly iterate TCP connections, which, while not actively sending or receiving any data, after some hours would number over 100 instances, taking up resources, and grinding my laptop's WiFi connection to a grindingly slow pace. I ended up, within the app, turning off everything, iCloud Drive and Photos, (I never used bookmarks), but still this would continue to occur.
I contacted Apple Support, explaining what was going on, and they stated they only dealt with IOS and gave me a Microsoft Support number. When I called Microsoft support, I came more and more to the realization that the issue was specifically with the iCloud for Windows app, as that was the only software that was endlessly creating and not closing TCP connections as it was. How was Microsoft supposed to solve an issue with Apple code?
So I called Apple back, whereupon they insisted it was a Microsoft issue. I explained other cloud services installed on the same computer were not having the same issue, it was unique to ICloudServices.exe. They stated they only dealt with IOS. I stated I purchased an iPad Air less than 7 months ago, and was trying to run iCloud in support of that. They again stated they only dealt with IOS, and suggested I again try Microsoft. I asked them if it was reasonable to expect Microsoft to solve issues with Apple code? They said regardless, there was zero support offered for anything having to do with Windows, and all I could do was uninstall the app, which I did, though that did not feel very satisfactory to me. My thinking is, if Apple writes a Windows app in support of their hardware, they should offer support for it.
Anyway, I was just wondering, is this an issue unique to me? or have others experienced a similar issue? I found this issue by opening the Windows Resource Monitor, looking under the Networking tab, and scrolling through the TCP Connections section to find 100+ concurrent iCloudServices.exe instances listed, whereas even Chrome, with multiple tabs and extensions, topped out at around 20.
My one month old Desktop, DYI, sports a solid Asus 1150 MoBo, i7-4790k cpu, 16GB Ram, and an EVGA GTX 970 video card. I list some specs only to illustrate this computer has no hardware issues in comparison to my long in tooth laptop. On this desktop, running Win 8.1 Pro 64b, at least as many, identifiably Apple, background service TCP connections are created even compared to Chrome, regardless of many tabs being open, many extensions, and even some related apps. Adobe does not even come close, though I run the full CC subscription. On this new computer, running Windows 8.1 Pro 64b, there are currently over 50 TCP connections and loopbacks that do not identify themselves, with just a - for the Image, and PID. With the experience on my laptop, I wonder how many of these are generated by Apple software, if not specifically iCloud software?
The frustrating aspect of these connections is they seem in no way active, While the Chrome and Adobe connections can be seen to be transferring data, as long as I am not running iTunes, or so have my iPad actually plugged in, it seems 99% of the time these iCloudServices.exe connections are just taking up ports, neither sending nor receiving any data discernable to me under the Processes with Network Activity, or Network Activity lists, both displayed in the same window as the TCP Connections in the Windows Resource Monitor.
Though I am fairly ignorant as regards coding, it seems as if there is no call to close a connection, very specifically, iCloudServices.exe, when it is no longer needed, and the next time a connection is needed, a new one is opened, rather than accessing the one previously opened. The only other reason I could imagine this might be occurring is if my Norton Internet Security software might mask and/or block the port after a certain time of inactivity.
Anyone out there have any ideas or advice about this? Thanks in advance.

I'm still dealing with this issue through Apple. Some time after I posted this, I contacted Apple again. They did start a case up for me, as I was experiencing the same behavior on two different machines, with two different versions of Windows.
So far it remains unsolved. I've logged iClouds for Windows on my desktop, which is brand new, then logged for awhile after completely uninstalling Norton Security Suite, depending on the Microsoft security for some time, and finally logged after I uninstalled iCloud for Windows, restarted, installed a clean download, and connected using a completely different test account, which Apple set up for me. None of this made any difference. Looking at the logs, it seems every 10 minutes, iCloudServices.exe creates a new TCP connection to confirm I'm using less than 5GB on iCloud, (which I am by a good margin, using less than 2GB), it seems this connection is not closed, and when the next iteration rolls around 10 minutes later, a new TCP connection is created. I come very close to having 6 TCP connections created per hour, until I restart my computer. This works out to... 6 x 24 = 144/day.
Perhaps the article you posted will shed some further light on this. I'm thinking seeing the state of the connection through netstats, at the least, could help.
For the last week, I've been putting a hold on further logging, as Apple wants me to create a new user account on one of my computers, install iCloud for Windows there, and log it running in the other account. This however basically means I cannot use my computer for a fair number of hours, and I've been busy enough with work the past week that I haven't the time or energy to afford to set this up and run it. I've had need of my computers too much for the past week.

this is all greek to me. WHAT IS STARTTLS? On the first page of Apple set up there is a TLS certificate and it is marked NONE- should I change it to the long APPLE CERT option? The next page under ADVANCED: THERE IS A BOX SSL MARKED. Then IMAP Path Prefix - I put stmp.gmail.com.. is that right? Port 993 can use this one? as 456 doesn't work and 587 said it wasn't safe. Under AUTHENTICATION I used PASSWORD. Should I have used external client cert TLS?

Having multiple problems with script - NTFS Permissions and AD Groups

Hi, all! I'm having multiple problems with my first script I've written with Powershell. The script below does the following:
1. Prompts the user for a corporate division under which a shared folder will be created, and adjusts variables accordingly.
2. Prompts if the folder will be a global folder or an office/location-specific folder, and makes appropriate adjustments to variables.
3. If a global folder, prompts for the name. If an office/location-specific folder, prompts for each component of the street address, city and state and an optional modifier. I've prompted for this information in this way because the information
is used differently later on in the script.
4. Verifies the entered information and requests confirmation to proceed.
5. Creates the folder.
6. Creates an AD OU and/or security group(s).
7. Applies appropriate security groups to the new folder and removes undesired permissions.

My problems right now are in the assignment/removal of security groups on the newly-created folder, and the problems are two-fold. Yes, I am running this script as an Administrator.
First, I am unable to remove the BUILTIN\Users group from the folder when this is an office/location-specific folder. I've tried to remove the group in several different ways, and none are having any effect. Oddly, if I type in the lines directly
into Powershell, they work as expected. I've tried the following methods:

In the first case, the script goes through and has no apparent effect because afterwards, I do a get-acl and the BUILTIN\Users group is still there, although when looking through the GUI, inheritance appears to have been broken from the parent folder.
In the second case, I get the following error message:

This seems strange that the local server is unable to translate the SID of a BUILTIN account. I've also tried explicitly putting in the BUILTIN\Users SID in place of the variable in the New-Object line, but that gives me the same error. I've
also tried the solutions given in this thread:

My second problem is when I try to apply the newly-created security groups, I also will get the "Some or all identity references could not be translated." I thought I had found a workaround to the problem by adding the -PassThru option to
the New-ADGroup commands, because it would output the SID of the group after creation, however a few lines later, the server is unable to translate the account to apply the security groups to the folder.
My first Powershell script has been working well up to this point and now I seem to have hit a showstopper. Any help is appreciated.

I was hoping to stay with strictly Powershell, but unless I can find a Powershell solution, I may resort to ICACLS.
As for the problems with my groups not being translatable right after creating them, I think I have solved this problem by using the -Server parameter on all my New-ADGroup commands and this example code seems to have gotten around the translation problem,
again utilizing the -Server parameter on the Get-ADGroup command:

Going this route seems to ensure that the Domain Controller I'm creating my groups on is the same one that I'm querying for the group's SID to use in the FileSystemAccessRule. It's been working fairly consistently.
Still having issues with the translation of the BUILTIN\Users group, though.
