I'm having trouble with an External HD attached to my Airport Extreme

I connected an external HD to my AirPort extreme using USB.  I assigned the disk to my Time Machine backup, but when I try to back up I get a message that the disk is unavailable.  The HD is mounted on my desktop and is formatted as MAC OS Extended (Journaled).

New formatted hard drive plugged into Extreme - yes, formatted Mac Journal. The new drive is seen on network, but it cannot be applied as a Time Machine function on my iMac.
I edit the Extreme on Airport utilities - add disks. The hard drive is shown. I enable file sharing, secure shared disks with device password - and update. Nothing happens from that point onwards.
Reading a number of other questions from people with similar problems on other sites, it seems that although this feature is advertised and promoted by Apple in the instruction booklet (page 13), Apple have backed away from this facility post production. Maybe it is not reliable enough in its present form?
I am very disappointed about this as I had intended to use the Extreme to back up several devices in my home and office.
Any other ideas would be welcome.
Thanks

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

  • Trouble accessing my external HD w/o my airport extreme

    Hey folks.
I bought and set up my airport extreme a few months ago so I could access my external HD wirelessly.  Recently I've been traveling so I took my macbook pro and my HD with me.  When I plug my HD in to my mac with the usual USB, it doesn't read anything.  Is my HD permanently formatted to only be read wirelessly thru my airport extreme?  How can I get it to work without the airport?

Was the USB disk plugged into the AE? If so it must be readable on the MBP as well. Is it self powered? Sometimes self powered disks give trouble.. have you checked cable and used both USB in the Mac?
How did you originally format the USB drive? If it was done on a Mac it should work. Could the disk be faulty.. open disk utility.. even if the computer cannot read the disk the utility should be able to see it and test it for you.

  • Having trouble connecting a windows 7 pc to my airport extreme

the pc can see the network, and connect if no password, but when i put in a password that all my mac products have no trouble with, the pc asks for the "network security key" and won't accept the password all the mac and iPad, iPhones use just fine.

I found out (through Apple Support) that WEP passwords have to be 5 characters (or 13) and that different manufacturers use different hatching schemes to make passwords of a different number conform. I changed the password on the Airport to 5 characters, and the PC was able to recognize it.

  • Trouble with Cisco AnyConnect VPN after getting new Airport Extreme

So I had a previous version Time Capsule that I used for years, and it started having issues where it would start spontaneously rebooting. I decided to get a new Airport Extreme (the new taller one) and went in without a hitch. Problem it, though, I work from home sometimes with my company provided Windows 7 laptop and I'm experiencing issues around the VPN hanging for 15-20 seconds then coming back, maybe 1x or 2x per hour. Especially noticeable when I'm on higher bandwidth applications like Lync meetings or Remote Desktop sessions. Never had the issue on the old Time Capsule, it was always solid (until the device itself started dying), and I don't have the issue when I'm in my office using the same VPN software. Never an issue with any of the computers in the house on the regular internet, non-VPN connection. Is there a setting I missed somewhere in my setup of the new Airport that can help to stabilize that VPN connection? Seems in newer versions, some of the options have been taken away or harder to find.
Running version 7.7.3 on the Airport Extreme.

  • I am having trouble with the external sound on my iPhone 4s

The external Speaker works for incoming calls, Siri. It no longer works for music, when dialing numbers, text messages.

    Hello there, Missy.
First thing I would recommend is to check your downloads queue to make sure there is not an interrupted download per the following Knowledge Base article:
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    1. From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
    2. For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
    3. Enter your account name and password if prompted.
    4. Tap the blue download arrow to resume.
If you can't complete the download on your iOS device, you can download it in iTunes on your Mac or PC and then sync it to your iOS device. You can also transfer purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer.
For Apps, you can also try tapping on the application icon to resume the download, as outline in this featured discussion:
App updates won't download on my...: Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4111336
Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Having problems seeing multiple hard drives attached to my Airport Extreme.

I just bought a refurbished Airport Extreme from Apple.com. I set it up and have been able to access my powered, 1 TB desktop hard drive, but when I attach a powered USB hub and two additional hard drives that are not powered (they're both portable, USB-powered drives), I'm usually only able to see my 1 TB desktop drive. When I can see them, it's only through the Airport Utility app and it says they're 0 mb drives. I'm never able to see them in Finder. I'm never able to drop anything onto either of the drives. Only the 1 TB drive. If anyone knows why and can help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    How are the portables formatted?
NTFS and ExFat are not supported: [AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426].

  • We are currently having troubles with our iTunes. Playing different songs and randomly it changes the name of the song to pink time after time. We could go through 5 songs before it will change the next one to song title time after time and artist pink

Hi I am having trouble with iTunes! Randomly when I click on a song in iTunes it changes the song title to time after time and the artist is pink.
I could click on 4 songs and they will be normal but then the 5th one will change the info to time after time.
I haven't done anything different or new, it started doing it all of a sudden, well that I have noticed anyway. Please help.

Hello Schimi. The Time Capsule is a kind of product that offer you two possibility:
    - To use the TC as a router or as an external HD.
The difference between WPA and WPA 2 are:
    - They are two kinds of internet connection.
WPA uses dynamic key encryption , which means that the key is constantly changing and makes the invasion of a wireless network more difficult than WEP . WPA is considered one of the highest levels of wireless security for your network and is recommended if your devices support this kind of encryption . Newer routers offer WPA2 security . WPA2 is compatible with WPA , but offers higher security level . In fact, it meets the high standards of many government agencies . If the router and computer support WPA2 , this should be your choice.
If you need any help or if you find some difficult setting up it you can contact Apple Support.
I am sure that they can help you with that.
I am sory for the delay. I holpe that you solve your issue.

  • I`m having trouble with my new advanced system the mac os X 10.0.3

    Hello everybody...
I need Help, I would appreciated anything anybody could do to help me...
I`m trying to install the new software the mac os X 10.0.3 and having trouble transfering all my files form the mac os 9.2.2 classic to my new system...Do i have to erase my hard drive to do a clean install???? Could I transfer my files to my home`s computer, instead of buying a portable smartdisk hard drive of 100 Gb, and then so i could transfer my fiels back to my mac without no trouble ????
I Hope anyone could answer to my post as soon as possible, Thanks

Hi, John. If you weren't having trouble with Mac OS 10.0.3, it would be a major surprise. OS X 10.0.x and 10.1.x were unusable beta versions and never should have been released, in the view of most people who ever tried to run them. It would be a severe trial of your patience and a waste of your time to install 10.0.3 on your Mac.
If you want to run OS X, buy OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar), 10.3.x (Panther) or the current version, 10.4 (Tiger). All are available at reasonable prices from AppleRescue. Tiger is also available from any Apple retailer. Carefully read the system requirements for whichever version you prefer, and be sure your computer meets them before buying. If your Powerbook only has a 10GB hard drive, install a larger one (at least 40GB is sensible, since the cost per gigabyte of smaller drives is now exorbitant compared with larger units) before bothering to install OS X.
It would be most advisable to copy everything on your current hard drive to an external FireWire hard drive, then reformat and erase the internal drive before installing OS X on it. Doing so insures that your data is all safe and that your internal drive is in tip-top condition when the new OS is installed. After performing the installation, you can copy the contents of the external drive back onto the internal drive. The external drive will then be available as backup space for the entire contents of the internal drive, including OS X, all your applications, and all your data.
While OS 9 is still installed on your hard drive, check to make sure your Powerbook's firmware is up to date. It will need to be brought up to date while running OS 9, before you install OS X 10.2 or higher. Here is the updater for your 500MHz Tibook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75132
If the firmware has already been updated, running the updater again will tell you so and will do no harm.

Clifton I must disagree with you on the above statement. It is my opinion and experience that you should never connect the camera directly to any computer, Mac Windows Whatever.
It is always best to Remove the memory card from the camera and put it in a card reader, whether an external reader or one built into the computer, to copy images from the card.
Hi Shootist. I would be interested in hearing some reasoning on this. I almost always use a USB cable to connect my camera to the MBP for transferring pictures, and have moved about 30,000 this way over the last 6 years since my photography went digital. Recently, on the rare occassions when I have only a few to transfer and I was too lazy to go for the cable, I have used the card reader; about half those times I have difficulty getting the MBP to recognise the card. I find I have to press the card very hard into the slot for it to be recognised.
My rationale is quite possibly wrong, but I feel that the USB connectors are more robust and hard-wearing than the flimsy connectors on an SD card. Also, I haven't measured it, but I think the data transfer is faster with the cable. (I just came across this test, which reports noticeably faster transfer for cable than built-in card reader, but the computer was a PC)
Chiara, sorry for hijacking your thread.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • I am having trouble with sound on my iPad

I am having trouble with sound on my iPad

    Found the fix.
If the reboot doesn't fix it.
If the headphoens work find, but no external speakers.
If the double-click and page right to the software mute, doesn't show the sound knob - just the brightness
If your pop-up shows "Docking Station"
Then, the problem is very likely a dirty connector.  The iPad/iPhone/iPod connector uses a resistor value to determine if the device is connected to an external 'speaker'.  There are a range of resistances, for a range of products.  This is known as the Connector Pin 21 issue.
Take some windex on a que-tip, or perhaps a Windex paper scrub and rub it on the bottom connector port.  Somehow, "something" has gotten on those contacts, and it is pulling the voltage on pin #21 down - so that the iPad "thinks" it's connected to an external speaker - this will disable the internal speaker circuitry, as well as the internal speaker volume controls.
Do not over-saturate and short out your iPad.  Do not throw it in the sink, do not use the kitchen faucet to flush it out.  A Que-tip with a few drops of Windex (or other gentle cleaner) should work just fine.  Takes all of 30 seconds - and magically, the volume knob appeared and everything worked just fine.

  • Having trouble with disc space on my 120G mac air. I back up to a separate my passport for mac disc, but my mac is also holding 40G worth of back up when i check what is using space. Why is this?

Having trouble with disc space on my 120G mac air. I back up to a separate " my passport for mac" disc , but my mac is also holding approx 40G of back ups as well when ive checked what is using space. Why is this?
Ive started running iphoto from the separate passport to save space,
and put all my music into the itunes match to save space as well
but it is still saying it is almost full because of the back ups!
I should of bought a bigger mac, but i need to make do at the moment, but it is hard when it constantly has only 10G or less space left.

When you use TimeMachine to back up a Mac notebook the local backups feature is automatically enabled. The local backup is just like a TimeMachine backup but it is done to the internal drive rather than an external. The important thing about local backups is that the feature is smart - as you need more drive space for your own data and applications, TimeMachine automatically culls the local backup to give you that needed space. So yes, it will look like you have very little drive space left and that the backup is 'robbing' you of needed GBs. But it really isn't.

I recently joined Pinterest and am having trouble with it on Firefox. I am able to load the website but unable to repin and pin my own items. The site works slowly but fine on IE. Any ideas?

You mean an external SSD? What kind of connection, that will be the bottleneck. Replacing the internal might be ok for a while till you start to fill it up, then the whole system will slow down.

    Hello Sue,
I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!
