I'm in BIG trouble - Deleted a SparseBundle File

I'm hoping someone can help me out of the dog house on this one.
My Wife's timecapsule ran out of room to backup her current laptop. So in a flash of genius, I thought I would delete old backup data. One of which was a SparseBundle file for an old Mac-Mini she had that had years of emails and pictures in it. I was able to simply delete the file, but it did not go to the trash on laptop (I guess because of the Time Capsule being Network connected).
I'm in serious hot water here and need a way to "undelete" the files.
I tried Data Recovery 3, but it only see's physically attached drives, not mounted volumes. I currently downloaded a trial program from fileundelete.net.
I'm afraid that unless I can connect the TimeCapsule physically to a MAC, I'm hosed.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to "undelete" the file, or connect to the TimeCapsule HDD physically?

Unfortunately, the file is probably gone.
If it is retrievable, you will need to go directly into the drive. This means that the drive must be pulled from the Time Capsule and placed in an enclosure, just to see if the software program can retrieve the information. That's a big "IF".
I haven't tried this, (pulling the drive will void the warranty on the Time Capsule), so I can't predict what your chances of success may be. Perhaps some other users could help in this regard.

Deleted Cache and now Im in big trouble!!

My MBP became so full I had to delete all the cache as well as other files - since found out I shouldnt have deleted all cache files.
Now, when I open any InDesign file it says it cannot open the file as the file has been damaged and gives 'Error code 4'
There is still various Adobe InDesign files in the trash which I can drag back but ive deleted cache on HD and on my user library, so dont know where to restore each one to.
Can anyone help??

My recollection is that error code 4 is a serious database corruption error in the file, and I don't see how the caches could have any bearing on that. Can you open ID, create, save and reopen a new file?
The sort of good news is that Markzware has a pretty good record of error code 4 recovery, though it comes at a cost. How many files do you have that exhibit this error? How long would it take to recreate them? The Markzware mthod involves sending the files throgh Quark using the ID2Q plugin, then saving the file and opening that in ID using the Q2ID plugin. If you have Quark already, the two plugins will set you back about $400, but if you don't have Quark, that's pretty expensive. Markzware will do the job for you for about $200/file on a no-recovery/no-fee basis. See Fix Your Bad InDesign Files!

No space. Two sparsebundle files--can I delete one?

There are two Macbooks backing up a Time Capsule on our wireless network. My mother noticed an error message on her laptop saying there's not enough space for Time Machine to perform a back up. I took a look at the Time Capsule, and sure enough, there's only 8 gigs left, even though in theory there should be plenty of space. (By my estimation maybe 100 gigs or so.)
I scanned my Time Capsule with GrandPerspective and noticed that my laptop has two sparsebundle files on the Time Capsule. One hasn't been updated since March. The only thing I can think of is that In the Spring I changed settings in Time Machine to back up a folder I hadn't backed up before. The other sparsebundle file is current to today.
Can I somehow get rid of the older one without causing too much trouble?

If you don't plan to access any of the data on the older "sparsebundle" file, I'd delete it. That will probably take a few minutes.

Big Trouble Starting iBook Up!

Hello there, I am having big trouble with my laptop. Here is the story:
Alright, I have two accounts on my laptop. One was the one a usually used and the other was for help with the FileVault problem I was having. I was running a disk cleaning application and a decided I would delete my .sparseimage on the other account. I had fast user switching enabled, so I clicked my other account. In the process of switching over, there is a blue screen - the screen that appears when the computer is loading a user/account. That blue screen never went away. I restarted the computer by pressing the start button for 5 seconds.
Now, when the computer turns on, it will load and even display the "Mac OSX is loading" screen. As soon as it loads all the way, it will go back to the blue screen and not do anything. What is also weird is that on the blue screen, the screen will change back between blue and black (black with white lettering - like when you are in "Single User Mode"). On this black screen, which only stays on for about a second. says something like "My-Name-iBookG4 getty: The operation can not be performed on the drive". Replace "My-name" with my real name - I do not want to share that across the internet .The wording is not word for word, I am at another location where I do not have my laptop with me. When I get home, I will reply to this and give the exact wording. The blue screen will be on for 10 seconds, and then the black screen will go for about 1 second, it keeps repeating. Me and another mac expert worked for about an hour in single user mode trying to fix it over the phone. We just could not do it. Later, I used Disk Utility from the mac start up disk and verified and repaired the disk. That still did not work. Is there any other way to fix this? Is there another application I can try using with the mac instal cd? My absolutely last resort would be to erase the disk and re install. I will do that after a long amount of searching for fixes. Thanks a ton for your help!

Good news!
I reinstalled the software from the MAC OSX Install CD. I made it so that it will install the software but yet keep all my files. I can now login and operate my computer!

Big troubles with FTP upload since upgrade to leopard

Hello out there,
I made an upgrade from tiger to leopard 3 weeks ago (10.5.7) on my iMac (Intel - early 2006). Since this time I Have big troubles with ftp upload.
I'm using Cyberduck as FTP client and it worked very well before but since the upgrade it starts quick and falls down to a view kb after a view seconds. Sometimes it stops completely.
Target Server is checked and working well. Also the ISP is fine (tested with a windows machine).
As it is important for my business (photographer) I would appreciate if somebody can give me a quick hint how to solve this problem.

I am also experiencing this problem, but only (so far) with one hosting company of the many I FTP into (web designer). The symptoms are exactly as reported above. Files initially start uploading fine, then slow to a crawl and stall. This is the same regardless of FTP software. Error reports say the server is not responding.
This problem is the same using my daughter's computer (also running 10.5.7), but my son (being my son) hasn't updated his OS since 10.5.5 and I encounter NO problems whatsoever FTPing from his machine, nor from a PC.
It's only the uploads that seem to cause a problem. Communicating with the server to download, rename, move or delete files presents no issues.
(In trying to track down where the problem was, I also discovered that the traceroute command to any site on both 10.5.5 and 10.5.7 stalls at the modem, though pings work fine as does tracert from the PC.)

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted. The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

Time Capsule Can't delete a sparsebundle

i have a time capsule which i used to backup 3 macs. but having 3 macs eventually filled it up completely and now i am backing up the macs on other separate time capsules. but on my original time capsule, i find i still have the old sparsebundles for the backups of the other macs there.
i just tried dragging one to trash since it was huge (500GB!) and a window popped up saying preparing to delete, and then it said it couldn't delete it because some item 'bands' is in use.
how can i force delete this sparsebundle? am i forced to reformat the whole thing, even losing the backups of the single machine i'm still using it for?

Plug your TC into your computer by ethernet.
Change it to bridge mode.
Update the TC.
Plug it by ethernet into your dad's TC LAN port.. to any port on your TC although by convention we use WAN.
Now check again when you connect by wireless to your dad's network.. or ethernet direct to your TC.. it should come up and be accessible.

I think I'm in big trouble now - CFReport

Hi all,
My client asked for some nicer reports that don't look so "excel-ish", specifically they wanted to see some nice looking 3D charts along with their data in a PDF format.
So, I worked on trying to create some nice mockup charts using the CFChart command, which I haven't used in a few years. I discovered the whole WebCharts3D series of charts, and was fairly impressed with the flexibility it had. So, I created an HTML page with my data and my new charts, and used CFDocument to make them a PDF. They looked great! Nice gradients on the backgrounds, my client's logo at the top of each chart, pie charts that jump out of the page at you... I got more than a few "wow's".
Then, I had to do it for real, and quickly saw that using CFDocument does not allow you to print page headers and footers when the report is more than a page long. I played for quite a while with google searches and CSS tricks to get it to happen, but it just isn't there yet - you can't get multiple footers to print (although you can get multiple headers - but it's hokey). Not to mention problems of the page break cutting off a line of text (maybe solvable, but at what cost? hours more of my time). So, I gave up using the CFDocument tag for our reports.
Then I tried the CF Report Builder. I have had some teething issues, but have been able to get a basic report at least, complete with my client's logo and watermark, and a pie chart. However, the pie chart looks terrible compared to the slick WebCharts3D pie chart that I did before. Plus, I haven't been able to get a bar chart work off of a passed in query yet, but I could probably get through that on my own.
To my question. Can you use a Webcharts3D chart in a CFReport? or, in other words, can you use CFChart in a CFReport?
If I cannot, I think I'm in big trouble, as the client thinks I can create these nice charts in a slew of new reports they want me to write... and I'll have to tell them that it's not possible? After I've already shown them what CFDocument can do?

I haven't got any more replies to my post "I'm having big trouble with my new mainboard" by Krelian 2003.09.13 at 05:25. Please help! I've been struggling with this for a LONG time. And now my computer won't boot at all! Sometimes the LED's in front of the computer lights up for half a second, and nothing more happens. The only sign of life is the green light in the LAN jack. It happened after I took the ide cable for my harddrive in and out of the mainboard. This is insane, how can that suddeny happen :O ?! I was asked by wonkanoby to post max amps for my PSU, I did, and I really need to know if I maybe need a new PSU, since he asked that. Can a new PSU solve all the problems mentioned in my previous posts? Everything was fine except that I couldn't get into Windows, before i tried another harddrive on my computer. How can that complicate things so much? I have tried going barebone, and taking out the cmos battery and setting the jumpers JBAT1, J10 and J11. I have also tried every suggestion I got. Please help! I really need to get this fixed!

Some power supplies or designed so that if there is a short or overload they shut them selfs off and some will not turn back on. Some have a relay that will click back on and work, some you have to cycle the power switch. Those that won't come back on will have to be replaced. I'm not saying that yours is that type as I have no way of telling. But if you have a friend who will loan you a good power supply you might try it. As someone else said just turning off the power will not darn all the power from some motherboards. To test this turn off your power supply than turn on the computer with the start botton. Mine will flash the lights and fans will start to spin than die. So every time you turn off computer to work on it. After turning off PSU hit the start botton to drian any power left in it before working on it. Also do this after unplugging it just to make sure.

Try going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

How to delete a Sparsebundle. A Faster Way.

After many trials and errors, I might have found a way to erase a Sparsebundle faster without having to wipe your entire Time Capsule, or using 3rd party programs.
My Setup: I am using the latest update of OS X Lion up to date. I have a 3 TB Time Capsule to which I back up to, through a Wifi connection.
For this exercise, I connected my device (Laptop) to the Time Capsule through a data cable and not through WiFi - please note that you can also do this through a WiFi connection if you do not have a data cable.
In settings, set your device to never go to sleep in Energy Saver - this is optional - so as not to interrupt the deleting process.
Open a Finder Window, click on your device name under "Devices" in the left column.
Then in the right window, double click on Network.
Then, double click on the hard drive where the Sparsebundle is located that needs to be deleted (click your way through until you reach the window where the Sparsebundle is located - i.e. in my case it was Device Name -> Network -> Time Capsule -> Data -> [this is the spot where my Sparsebundle was located]).
Highlight the Sparsebundle (do not double click on it!).
Click on the little gear button at the top of the window -> then click on "Show Package Contents" in the dropdown box.
After a few moments, files will appear on the right side.
Double click on the "Bands" file and wait for a few seconds/minutes for the bands/files to appear in the new window (there could be as much as 75 000 lines, and more, depending on how long you have been using this Sparsebundle).
Setup to delete Bands:
1. Open up the "Force Quit Applications" window by holding down on "Command" + "Options" and the "Escape" keys simaltaniously, and drag this window to the right side of your screen (for convenience sake).
2. Decrease the size of the main Finder window that contains the bands, and drag it to the left side of the screen.
You are going to use both windows at all times.
Delete Process:
Now, right at the start, relaunch Finder in the "Force Quit Applications" window by highlighting Finder and then click on "Relaunch" at the bottom of the window.
Wait a few moments for the bands to reappear in the Finder window.
Then highlight about 5000 bands at a time and delete them (choosing less will go faster). It might take a while to count the bands and start the deleting process, but be patient.
Then, after the selected lines are deleted, (OR at any time if the process gets stuck for more than a minute), just relaunch Finder again and restart the process.
This is the trick - Relaunch Finder after every batch of bands you delete. (I do not know why, but it works!)
Relaunch Finder -> Delete bands -> Relaunch Finder -> Delete bands -> Relaunch Finder....... etc.
When you are done, do not forget to reset your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences.
By doing this, I was able to delete more than 17 000 bands in 5 minutes as opposed to waiting for 18 hours to delete 31 000 files at a time (in one batch). My original Sparsebundle of 75 000 lines took me almost 48 hours to delete in the old way. With this new way of "Relaunching Finder after every delete" the process was lighting fast in comparisson.

I tried this (well, only rm -R without the f or v) and after ten minutes nothing had happened, ie, not asking for confirmation for any files. Even something as simple as a ls command in the bands folder did not produce any results within ten minutes. (I also tried the band method but at best I was able to delete individual bands never more than one, I also tried connecting via SMB and I tried the third-party application Graveyard.)
What was much faster was to simply open up the TC, put the HDD into a HDD dock and delete the bundle with the disk mounted locally. Deletion of 1 TB consisting of almost 100 000 bands took about five minutes with an always active progress bar.
To anybody having a HDD dock (or an easily opened 3.5" HDD enclosure) I recommend this approach.

How can i delete a corrupted sparsebundle file

My TimeCapsule sparsebundle file is corrupt and cannot be opened by TimeMachine anymore. However I cannot delete it either, error message: "The process could not be completed as the object "bands" is in use." (my translation from my German original: "Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, da das Objekt "bands" in Verwendung ist")
ANY IDEA HOW I CAN DELETE THAT SPARSEBUNDLE WITHOUT FORMATTING EVERYTHING?
Maybe you need the whole story to come up with some good ideas, this is how it came:
- I bought a new 500GB TimeCapsule and tried to do a first backup. It ran the whole night through and wasnt done the next morning. However I had to leave to work and had to cancel it at 80% or so.
- I tried it again on the weekend, but hat to cancel again after dozens of hours of slow backup without success. Finally the sparsebundle file had grown to several hundred GB and I thought I better delete it before trying to backup again.
- Hence: I picked the file and delete, confirmed that it would be deleted straight away (without being moved to the basket before), it started deleting but stopped half way.
- SO NOW: i can neither use the file through timemachine, nor get rid of the file to start timemachine again.

I tried downgrading the firmware back to 7.3 and that didn't work for me either, neither did resetting the Time Capsule.
It ended up that my sparsebundle was in indeed corrupted (for the 2nd time now) which is completely crazy to me!...
I did find out *WHY my sparsebundle kept getting corrupted*:
I learned that when time machine is turned on, if the computer goes to sleep, about 50% of the time, that will "corrupt" the sparsebundle!
What I had to do last night was delete my sparsebundle (again) and then do the dreaded, long "first backup" all over (overnight).
I made a point to go to the "*energy saver*" on my preferences to change the settings on it so that it wouldn't put the MacBook to sleep (both on the battery and power options) so that my sparsebundle won't get corrupted again!
This was really frustrating, and that little piece of information should be included with the Time Capsule for consumers so that they can avoid the frustrations that we've all apparently been having. I'm suprised at Apple, and a little disappointed in all of the time that I spent/lost dealing with the Time Machine and Time Capsule.

Basic troubleshooting steps outline in the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. Try each of these in order until the problem is resolved. If you've been through all these steps and the trouble persists, you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation. Be sure to make an appointment first at the Genius Bar so you won't have a long wait.

Trouble deleting mail

Why am I having trouble deleting some email, especially from advertisers. Mail program tells me it cannot delete and then I have to force quit the program to get out of it.

I hate Lion. Why does the same mail have to into so many folders. Mail in "Important" deletes fine. Mail in Spam deletes fine, its only "All Mail" I have problem with. No matter how often I delete it and no matter how many I delete at a time, it always come back. I did what you suggested but it hasn't helped. THis morning all the mail was back again.
Any way I can ditch Lion and go back to Snow Leopard?
