I'm in desperate need of help please (External hard drive question)

Today I bought a LaCie 160GB firewire external hard drive, and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to use it, or where it's located. I tried to find it in disk utility and it won't show up, if anyone can help me I promise to mail you $1.
Thanks in advance

  • Help Please: External Hard Drive not accepting files from Macbook

    My Desktop is a PC.
    My laptop is a Macbook.
My External Hard drive is a Belkin High Speed USB 2.0 External Drive Enclosure Kit.
I am new to the Mac.
The Macbook recognises the External Hard Drive when plugged into a USB port. No problem.
I can drag any file from the external hard drive into the mac. No problem.
But I cannot drag any file from the Mac back into the External Hard Drive. (Jpegs, PSD, Doc etc-no file is accepted)
When I drag the file from the Mac to the External Hard Drive I get this message:
"The item “filename“ cannot be moved because “folder(external drive)” cannot be modified.
I did a get-info on the external drive and got this information-
    'Format: Windows NT Filesystem
Ownership and Permissions: you can only read'
It defeats the purpose of my working on my laptop if i cannot bring the files back 'home' to the Hard Drive-What can I do to be able to bring files back into the external hard drive? Can someone please advise me?
I look forward to hear from you.

if these macbooks are dual core(?) supporting mac and
windows is there not a way for me to work on a
file, save the file in windows and then drag it into
    the external hard drive?
    i guess not?
    Not really.
On a related note and as an alternative, someone posted a way that I didn't think about which may get around having to do all that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=630540&tstart=45
i guess i'll have to go the partition route. all my
important files are on the external hard drive-who
can i trust to do this and how much can i expect to
    pay for it?
I think I would try the above networking route first before playing around with the partition on the external.
I think it should work so long as the external drive on the PC is shared.

  • HT201250 Do I need to partition my external hard drive if I'm using Time Machine and other storage?

I never used Time Machine before.  I was storing select files on my external hard drive as well as using my libraries (IPhoto, ITune, IMovies) directly off of the external hard drive.  That hard drive is giving me problems, so I bought a new one.  I want to set up Time Machine on this one, but I also want to keep my active libraries on it.  Do I need to partition the external hard drive?

You can partition the new drive, just don't make one of the partitons a TimeMachine drive, save a TM for a entire drive with more space than the boot drive as it saves "states" thus requires more room than most people expect.
I highly advise one drive to one drive for backups, and not placing too many backup eggs in one vulnerable hardware basket basically.
Drives are cheap, data is not. Hardware can fail just as often as software, so you need a multiple backup and storage stragedy to protect even against theft and fire.

  • Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,

  • Need help with external hard drive!

    Hi all,
I have been having trouble with my external hard drive.
My mac is reading the disk however all my files from the hard drive are missing?
In disk utility is seems to show that there are files on the disk but I cannot see them?
At the bottom is shows that there are files on the disk!
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
Here is a screenshot of my disk utility

Ok just to clarify the format issue...
Just move the data from the external drive, format and then move it back if you want, as JiveMasterT explained.
If the external drive is FAT file system, then you don't need to format the drive unless you are planning on using the drive as an OSX backup.

  • Help with external hard drive please????

I am ready to chuck my computer out of the window I am so frustrated!! I really hope someone can help... Fingers crossed, here goes...
I have two macs - a MacBook running OSX 4.11 and an iBook G4 running OSX 3.9. I also have an Iomega external hard drive. I reformatted it when I bought it for the MacBook, and have been using it fine.
Now, I want to move a load of music from my iBook to the external hard drive. But when I plug in the hard drive, the iBook says 'MAC OSX CANNOT READ THE VOLUMES INSERTED' and gives me options of initialize, cancel, or eject.
I don't want to initialize as I'm assuming this will re-re-format the ex hd and lose the stuff I have on there already.
    Is this the case?
Why won't the Iomega talk to the iBook? (the Iomega website says macs need no drivers for their products...)
Can anyone think of any genius ideas for getting the info off the iBook? Bearing in mind that there is no DVD writer, my internet connection is a teeny 2mb/s and the largest alternative storage device I have is a 2 gigabyte photo card (which i have been using, painstakingly, but is causing me massive grief by taking all night to upload from the ibook and then all day to transfer to the hard drive via the macbook, and losing a bunch of files in the process => AAAAAGH!!!!!). I've also tried firewiring the ibook and macbook together but they don't recognise each other. I created a network and accessed the iomega from the ibook via that but the 2mb/s broadband was so slow it would have taken all week, and the machines crashed anyway.
    Thoughts? Ideas? Inspiration? Magic wand????
    THANKS

    Ok, deep breath & relax...
What format & partition table is the drive in?
On the macbook with drive installed, Open up Mac HD/Applications/Disk Utility.app
Select the drive from the list. If the partition scheme is GUID, then 10.3 won't be able to see it.
& changing requires a reformat of the drive.
So, what I would do is hold T while booting the macbook until the firewire logo shows on the screen. plug the 2 macs together via firewire 400 cable. your macbook should now show up as a firewire drive on the ibook.
drag & drop the files you want to move. eject the drive when done & press power on the macbook to exit this mode. press power again to boot.

  • Need Help with External Hard drives and too much music

I am not terribly tech-savvy, and I need your help. I have a G5 PPC dual processor with an internal 250GB drive. I have two seagate firewire/USB2 external hard drives. One is 250GB and one is 350GB. I want to know how to use them to get my Mac to run faster and better.
My original hard drive is 7GB shy of being full. Almost half of this is my itunes library which is over 100GB. The older (250GB) hard drive has about 150GB of photos/videos.
My Mac is running slow as molasses and when I power up the external hard drives it slows down to what I recall my original Mac Plus ran like.
I use the G5 primarily to work with photos, illustrations and creating the occasional DVD with video and photos. the apps I use most often are Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter. I always listen to music while work.
I hope all of this information is helpful! Here is my question:
What is the best way for me to set up and use these external hard drives to return my G5 to its original blazing (to me) fast speed?
    PPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I think you should look at adding two 500GB internal drives. I'd say Maxtor MaxLine Pro for cost, but they also run much warmer (43ºC even when nearly doing zilch) so I'd go with WD RE2 500GB for $40 ea. more.
dump whatever you don't need, trash anything that is hogging space and is just temp file or useless cache. Web browsers can leave behind a ton of small files eating up tens of MBs.
Use SuperDuper to backup/clone your drive.
Disk Warrior 4 to repair (after it gets to 15% free, or just forget for now).
A 250GB drive formats to 240GB and you have ~3% free it looks like.
For every data drive plan to have two backup drives.
Keep your boot drive to 40% used.
And your data drive to 60%.
Backups can go a little higher.
Drives are cheap and inexpensive, especially for the space and performance. And they have improved SATA over the years it has been out.
By doing a backup followed by erasing your drive, and then restoring it, using SuperDuper, which optimizes the organization, skips copying temp files that aren't needed, it also defragments your files. I would do backup daily to different sets that you "rotate." And before any OS update. And do the erase and restore probably every 2 months.
Make sure you keep one drive partition somewhere that is just your disk utility emergency boot drive that is not a copy of working system, used for doing repairs like running Disk Warrior and Disk Utility.
You may need to repair; backup; even erase and restore your external drives. Rather than spend on vendor made case, just pick up a good FireWire case either with drive, or bare (and add your own). I think it'd add 500GB FW drive though.
    Why?
To begin backup of your current drive. To leave your other FW drives "as is" for now.
Then install a new internal 500GB drive as well so you now have a good current backup, and you have moved your data off 250GB to 500GB. If anything happens, you have one off line FW backup.
Then begin to clean up, organize, and get your FW drives working. It sure sounds like they have had some directory or file problems.
You can find a lot of Firewire and SATA drive choices over at OWC:

  • URGENT HELP: Need to reformat an external hard drive for Mac/Win!

We got a Desk Hammer external hard drive and my hubby chose to format it as Mac Only when it first initialized. We needed it to be formatted for Mac/Win usage. Now we cannot figure otu how to reinitialize and reformat it. It's been years since I messed with his Mac. Help--right now we just have a big old doorstop instead of a hard drive! BTW Desk Hammer is no help with support (I guess that's why they were on sale); their website isn't even complete!

Use the Disk Utility application found in /Applications/Utilities to format the Drive as MS-DOS File System. This will be readable by both Mac and Windows platforms.

  • HELP PLEASE = MY HARD DRIVE DIED!

    Hi peoples,
I am in need of help. I was using my ipod with my laptop and then the hard drive died and I got a new pc (i did not recover data off the laptop - too expensive!).
So, i installed the ipod software on the new pc. And have since purchased a lot of music through the i-tunes store. i cannot get this new music onto my ipod.
Also, previously purchased (and also some music from own cds which i have copied to itunes) is only on my ipod and most of it will not play.
I need to synchronize whats on my ipod to my computer, and also whats on my computer to my ipod...without loosing either set of music.
    Can someone pleeeeease help me???

*I need to synchronize whats on my ipod to my computer, and also whats on my computer to my ipod...without loosing either set of music*
You won't be able to sync your iPod until you have everything that's on it copied back into iTunes. the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
One final thing, if your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an different iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever retrieval method you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Please help ASAP external hard drive

hi guys, I have a acomdata 250 external hard drive firewire and today it wont mount. Disk utility shows the drive but It cant repair it. I have tech tool pro 3 and now im doing the "recover files using directory data" but should I do something different or take it to mac store or something Please let me know, all my projects are there and if I loose them Im gonna be dead
    thanks to all

    Hi demarial;
Maybe in the future you will backup important data!
If your use of Tech Tool Pro does yield the results you need, you might consider download a demo copy of FileSalvage. After running the demo it will tell you what it can recover then you have to pay for it to actually recover the files for you.

  • Help with external hard drive connection

I have two external hard drives. One is connected to my PCMCIA card firewire and the other to the original firewire port. When I get into the final cut pro program, the program shows little red slashes through my different things that I have put into the computer. I need to know how to retrieve those files. The computer does show that the external hard drive is connected, but it shows that the media is offline. I have done this before I just want to know how to reconect the media. I think it should be easy. Please help.

Have a read of of your Final Cut manuals, Volume IV, Chapter 6, Reconnecting Clips and Offline Media, then experiment with ctrl-clicking the offline files and selecting Reconnect Media.
If all is well and you have a good naming convention for your clips, a simple search should reconnect everything. If you have changed volume names or have a whole collection of files named 'Untitled Capture' then you may be in more trouble.

  • Do I need to have an external hard drive that has a certain spindle speed, like 7200?

In the past, when I did audio or video editing, the specs on the software required a certain rotational speed if I were using an external hard drive. Most of the time it was 7200. Do I need to use a specific spindle rotational speed for Final Cut Pro, or will drive 5400 or above do fine?

That still applies today as well. Helps to also use faster connection ports like Firewire 400 or 800, USB 3.0, or Thunderbolt rather than USB 2.0.

  • Do I need to partition my external hard drive for a bootable backup

Hi - First, I apologize for asking a question that's already been discussed so much.  I did try to read everything I could, but I remain confused.  Here is my precise situation:
I have an iMac, and I purchased a year's worth of Carbonite's online backup and breathed a sigh of relief.  Then I read some people have problems with Carbonite, and the best advice was to buy an external hard drive, which I did.  It just arrived, I plugged it in, and Time Machine backed up my computer on it...so I breathed another sigh of relief.
Then I read that my wonderful new 2T external hard drive isn't good enough, that I should partition it so as to have one backup, and one "bootable backup."  Is this really necessary?  And what is the difference between a backup, and a bootable backup?  If it is necessary, how do I do it?  Is it a problem that I've already used it to create a backup on Time Machine?
I use my computer for things like email, Facebook, pictures, eBay, stuff like that.  I have no unusual needs.  My computer is an iMac OS X 10.6.8.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

I prefer a clone/bootable backup ovver Time Machine myself.
For TM you need a running OS, then time to restore, with a clone you can boot from that & keep working while doing the other when time is better. And you can test a clone before you need it.

  • HELP. External hard drive suddenly won't show up on Mac.

So, I left for a few minutes and when I got back, there was that warning on my screen that said the disc wasn't ejected properly, etc. Which was weird because the drive was still plugged in fine. Anyway, when this happens, I usually just pull the hard drive out then plug it back in and it works fine but now it won't show up on the desktop or on the disk utility I got it to show up on disk utility once, but the subheading under the hard drive was greyed out. I could click it but when I tried to run Verify or Repair, nothing would happen. It would show up on the history as "repaired disc" but NOTHING. And I am honestly freaking out Please help, anyone

I'd have to agree with WZZZ. That sounds like either a bad connection, bad cable, or faulty supply. The port could be bad as well but the cable either being bad or not properly plugged in or maybe even worn out. When the "disk ejected" message shows up it's usually because somehow the cable was yanked out of the system while it was plugged in. Intermittenet connections in the cable, particularly in supply lines between the drive and the unit can cause this to happen as well...it's as if you unplugged the external hard drive from the system for a very short time, but the system still picks it up and sees it as bad.
