I'm looking for a High Definition Ken Burns effect

I put together an hour-long DVD every year of the best photos of my daughter. Every year I've used a program called *Still Life* to add the ubiquitous Ken Burns effect to about 25% of the stills. I've been very happy with the results.
But, lo and behold, we've upgraded this year to an HD television, and suddenly everything changes.
Now it is painfully apparent that *Still Life* can no longer do the job, as its output is noticeably non-HD.
I see how I can do the same basic movement in FCE itself using keyframes, but this movement is static. The thing I liked about *Still Life* was that it started the movement slowly, built up speed, and then slowed the movement at the end. It was smooth. I can't make FCE perform as smoothly. I get visual whiplash when it starts and stops.
I've found some other similar programs-- Photo-to-Movie, MovingPicture, etc.--but none of them output in the same high quality HD that FCE express does. I even tried *iMovie HD*, but it isn't flexible enough (you can't change the start or stop movement times, so that when I transition the clips in FCE, I lose the second before the Ken Burns effect kicks in, and so the overall effect is herky-jerky).
Does anyone have any suggestions for a software solution that exports high quality HD Kens Burns movement for a still photo?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi(Bonjour)!
I see on photo to movie spec page that you can export in full 1920 X 1080 H.264 codec, a high quality format usable in FCE.

By the way, how do you deliver your HD sequence from your mac to your HD TV set ?

  • Turn off this annoying Ken Burns effect!

I haven't found a solution on the discussion board for turning off the Ken Burns effect. The checkbox doesn't work, nor does the "settings" button to the right of it. I check "none" for transitions, "none" for effect, "none" on Ken Burns. Still the pictures have the cliche twangy music and annoying pan/zoom thing. Works great in Ken's films, but why did apple screw this up? We need to be able to turn it OFF!
    Has anyone found a solution???
    Ibook G4 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Trashing this preference file has had limited success, because that's been posted on earlier inquiries, but I think it doesn't work very well. I found the gray-colored arrows (should be bright red!) next to the "adjust" button. When the arrows are clicked, up comes "music" and "settings". In those dialog boxes, one can actually turn off the Ken Burns and music successfully. Maybe my version of iphoto had this added from previous v.5?
I always wonder why software designers make so much money, and why would anyone actually want to use this overdone, outdated affect as a default??

  • Having the Ken Burns effect off (by default)

When I select pictures for a diaporama, the Ken Burns effect is always checked in the "settings" window.
Is it possible to avoid that ? (I very rarely want to use the Ken Burns effect, and have to select the "settings" windows and un-check it each time).
    Thanks for your help.

I actually gave that info to another poster and they told me it didn't work.
One person said it did, so I guess your milage may vary.

  • Update for AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver

I have a HP Pavilion g6 Notebook LW350UA#ABA 64 bit operating system Windows 7.  HP Assistant is offering me a update for AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver.  It goes through the check list with green checkmarks next to them all the way down to the download completion.  Then it goes through the installation but stops with a black X beside that.  I close out the HP Assistant and it shows on the Task Bar with a Red Exclamation Point still offering me the same update. I would appreciate any help in how to get this update installed.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
It doesn't look like there are any recent AMD updates for your notebook, so this may be a configuration error with HP Support Assistant.
    Try the following.
First of all, uninstall your current version of HP Support Assistant by using the Microsoft 'Fixit' on the following link - this is particularly useful in correcting issues that may prevent reinstallation on machines running a 64bit OS.
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
When this has completed, restart the notebook.
Next download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the page on the link below - the download links are towards the bottom of the page.
    http://h18021.www1.hp.com/helpandsupport/hp-support-assistant.html
After the installation, restart the notebook again.
Check if HPSA still offers the AMD update.

    Hi,
I have Satalite A300D-15B AMB 64-bit notebook with Vista 64-bit installed. After I have installed Vista, it automatically took the audio drivers for sound card, but Dolby didn't work.
I tried to install the drivers from toshiba, it fails.
Can someone guide me how to install the Vista 64-bit drivers for Conexant High Definition Audio please......
    regards,
    Ganesh

    Hello Ganesh
Sorry but this notebook model is not supported for Vista 64-bit and I don't know what driver installation are you writing about.
What you can try is to download and install THIS driver.
This is driver for Satellite A300 but this notebook has the same sound card as your Satellite A300D - Conexant CX20561.
    Please post the results.

  • Turning off "Ken Burns" effect for SOME photos

I see that someone has asked a similar question in the past and told that it's not possible to turn off the Ken Burns effect for some photos, but I'm hoping someone has a workaround or there's a hack...
I've made a slideshow and got the idea to "tell the story" by creating some "title" images in Photoshop elements which I've placed in between a series of photos.
These are just black backgrounds with the title (e.g. "...and the party begins", "Family reunion" etc.) in big white letters. I'm very happy with that idea
I like the Ken Burns effect for the slideshow as it adds some semi-video "action" effect, but NOT on the titles. Having the Ken Burns effect there just looks stupid, so I would like to remove it for the titles alone.
I know I can do it the other way round (go to "Settings" for the Slideshow, deselect "Automatic Ken Burns effect", then manually add the effect for all the photos I want), but with a slideshow album that's going to take ages to do!!
    Is there a better way?

Perhaps you're checking the KB button on the "main" menu for the slideshow. That actually changes only the setting for the image that is currently selected. Try using the "Settings" button and deselect the "Automatic KB effect."

  • Best compression for ken burns effect

    Hey,
I am doing a 2 minute animation that is all ken burns effect.  The size is 720 x 1280. On the images that have a lot of detail like brickwork, there is a noticeable pop where you can see compression for a few frames and then it clears up.
I am making a h264 mpg movie straight out of AE.  Any ideas?

Yes. I have an idea. Don't do that.
AE is definitely not the best tool for making an H.264. Render an intermediate file out of AE (lossless or nearly lossless, such as Quicktime with the PNG codec, Quicktime with the PhotoJPEG codec, Cineform, or DNxHD). Then use the Adobe Media Encoder to make the H.264. Use multipass compression. Adjust the keyframe distance, etc. The cool thing is that you won't have to render your AE comp over and over again for each time you need to test a different setting in your compression. You're just running off of the already rendered intermediate file.

  • I need to do non-constrained crops for Ken Burns effect in photo slide show

I am making photo slide shows in imovie '09. I understand the Ken Burns effect and how to set a start and an end point. I want to use the effect on vertical or portrait mode photos. i would like to have the entire photo displayed in portrait mode and have it zoom in a bit. The problem is The start and end points seem to only be horizontal or landscape mode. I can't ever get the entire image selected. How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

You need to add the letterbox (black space) in another application. iMovie's Ken Burns effect will not do it for you. You can do it in Photoshop if you like.
However, there is a way to do it in Automator, and you can do hundreds of vertical photos very quickly. That is the way I do it.
    Here is more detail:
There is also a quick way to pad your images without using Photoshop. This method will pad hundreds of images in just a few seconds.
You do it with a tool that comes with OS/X called Automator. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Automator is basically a workflow tool. It allows you to string together commands and actions into a workflow and then execute the entire sequence at once. If you have Snow Leopard, you can even add these workflows to your contextual menus that come up when you right-click.
There are many workflows that would work to pad your images. Here is an example:
In Automator, start a photo workflow and drag the following actions into the workflow from the Action palettes on the left.
    You should have something like:
1)Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2) Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3) Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" Pick the pixel dimensions of your project...like 640x480 or 960x540. or 1920x1080
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
Then at the end you should have padded images in the folder you created in step 2.

  • Making slideshow for 1 jpeg, ken burns effect for 60 seconds freezes unit

trying to make a slideshow using 1 jpeg, ken burns effect turned on for 60 seconds in slideshow "settings", sometimes it makes a movie which will fill up the hd, hd space available is 67 gigs, ram is 1 gig, then we will get message saying that the hd is full, only way to boot is to pull the battery out, which bothers me. any suggestions on why this is happening? thanks and have a good weekend.

    Is all you're software up-to-date?
At a guess, I suspect that the slideshow is endlessly looping, trying to find a second or subsequent pic. Afterall, a one shot slideshow is unusual. For that kind of slow pan you might have more luck with an app like PhotoToMovie. (http://www.lqgraphics.com).

  • Can I create a keyboard command for the Ken Burns effect?

    Friends,
I am creating a short video that consists of about 40 stills and a few video clips.  For each of the stills I want to create a Ken Burns effect.  I know that there is a keyboard command to open the crop tool.  Can I create a keyboard command that opens the Ken Burns editor?  I guess the broader question is whether I can create a macro that combines a keystroke and one or more mouse clicks?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    The Keyboard-shortcuts-editor
    ⌥ - ⌘ - K
doesn't list the 'Ken Burns'-effect as 'shortcutable' …
And I doubt, that even Automator
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2488?viewlocale=en_US
    would createany useful 'shortcuts':
Each picture is different - so, how should a 'standardised' KB work?
What does work indeed , is copy/paste of Attributes:
    create your KB for clip#1
    hit cmd-c
select clip#2 (or many) hit ⇧-⌘-V and select the 'crop' attributes ...

  • Can I undo the Ken Burns effect for all clips at once (instead of pulling up each clip individually)?

Can I undo the Ken Burns effect for all clips at once in iMovie (instead of pulling up each clip individually)?

Yes, you can select multiple clips then Adjust, Crop, click on "Fit".
