I'm looking for a music player with the following features:

Hi everyone,
I'm setting up a linux desktop for the first time. I'd like some directions on finding a music player. Here are my criteria, in order of importance:
  - Can play (at least) ogg, mp3 and wav
  - Prefers a 'playlist approach' (m3u) to a 'media library' approach
  - Can play songs without breaks in-between
  - Fast startup
  - Simple interface (ex. VLC beats mplayer)
My window manager is pekwm. This is for usability reasons, not performance reasons - my comp. can handle all the bells and whistles you throw at it (actually, I tried with my doorbell, but I wouldn't recommend with the church bell). (sorry for the bad humour). Crazy visualisations and features whose sole purposes are to eat up CPU cycles are O.K.
Good support for keyboard would be appreciated - I am a pekwm user.
So what have you got?

MPD rocks, runs here for months without major problems.
The client side is very flexible, you can choose many players:

For X, for console, etc..
Edit:
MPD supports Icecast also, to create streams.

  • Looking for a music player with a very specific feature

I've been looking for this ever since I completely left windows behind, and six months later, it's killing me that I haven't found the right music player.
Obviously, I used to use foobar2000. The greatest thing about it for was the 'facets' extension which added customizable filter panels. The MOST GREATEST THING about it was that you could combine directory and tag sorting, which means I could sort my REDICULOUSLY HUGE music library by Folder/Folder/Album, which corresponded to Genre/Artist/Album. For various finicky little reasons, sorting it by folder was much more effective than by tags.
Does anyone know any media player which allows this?

Hi, I was a foobar2000 user too. It was driving me crazy that I couldn't find a good replacement, but i've found one. It's quodlibet. Unfortunately right now it's not possible to do Folder/Folder/Album in the panels, but QL has a 'filesystem view' for this. Other than that it can do the good stuff:
    - freeform tagging
    - freeform filtering
It means that you can set whatever tag you want to and then put it in the panels, song list or search bar. It has conditional tags too. For me it was Genre/Style/<albumartist|<albumartist>|<artist>>/Album, but I do not use the panels anymore. I do not have to see my library everytime I play some music. These days I'm using the Album List with the search bar and doing stuff like &(style=goa,#(playcount<1),#(discogs_votes>=50),#(year <= 1998)) makes my day. Replaygain with auto-select between 'track' and 'album' based on current view and play order is a neat feature too. ;-)

  • Looking for an audio interface with the following criteria

    -Firewire
    -At least 4 mic preamps
    -MIDI in/out
-Optical ("lightpipe") outs to the active monitors
Will I need to get a separate interface and midi or preamp box to get all this? Is there an interface out right now that satisfies these criteria?
    Advance thanks.

RME Fireface 800. Far and away the best sounding and most stable Mac inferface I've ever used. That includes 002, MOTU 2408, MOTU Ultralite and the M-Audio 410. Great pre's, great clocking and the Total-Mix software is unbelievable. I even use it as my main audio interface in Pro-Tools by sending firewire to and from the 002 and essentially using the 002 as a $ 1200 dongle.
    Best

  • Looking for a DVD Player with same functionality as CyberPro Power DVD

I have just converted from PC to Mac, and love it, but have a special requirement and need some guidance.
I work in TV and need to be able to preview footage shot on site that has been converted onto a DVD. On my old PC using Power DVD, after hitting 'Play' I can fast forward and fast reverse, and increase the speed of FF or FR in small increments (up to 32 times normal speed) using the scroll wheel on my mouse. That gives me a lot of control as I search through countless hours of footage to shot list, and saves heaps of time.
With the standard Mac DVD Player, I can hold down the FF and FR buttons to get a slight increase in speed, but it is still far too slow and clumsy for what I need.
VLC was recommended, but when I hold down the FF and FR it scrolls in minutes, whereas I need to scroll in frames.
Does anybody know of a high quality DVD Player with the scrolling features similar to Power DVD that I can purchase?

    Have you tried, +DVD Player>Controls>Scan Rate+ ?

  • Looking for AIR app with the following features

This list of functionalities is so common I thought I'd check to see if anyone knows an opensource or even commericial app with the following features.
    Access User's File System
    Drag & Drop Upload
Does anyone know of an AIR project that already exists?
I could write this myself but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel with a 2 week deadline.
    Thanks

    Hi A-Mo,
I'm very sorry that your husband's PowerShot SD1100 IS was stolen!
The SD camera line has been replaced by the PowerShot ELPH lineup. These cameras are improved in a number of important ways, such as better zoom lenses, and sensitivity to light for existing light photography.
I recommend that you consider the PowerShot ELPH 310 HS. This camera has an 8x optical zoom lens (vs. 3x for the PowerShot SD1100 IS), has a higher ISO of 3200 (vs. 1600) for low light photography and shoots video in "full" high definition (1920 x 1080 resolution) (vs. 640 x 480).
Please note: none of the cameras in this group of cameras includes the optical viewfinder you had on the PowerShot SD1100 IS,
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Looking for ebook reader app with good annotation features

I'm looking for an ebook reader app to use on my iPhone and iPad that will allow me to do this:
    1. In a book, Highlight a selection of text, and make that a note or annotation
    2. Be able to see all my annotations/notes for a book in one place
    3. And here's the one I can't seem to find: Be able to generate a file with JUST my annotations in it so that I can save it off or email it or dropbox it or something like that.
Does anyone know of such an app?

    I HAVE THE PERFECT APP!!!
I had been looking for an app that did the same things you requested. And somebody finally created it.
    Its called Readmill
    www.readmill.com
You can export all of your notes/highlights as an email.
It also syncs your ebook library with Dropbox
Here is the interview that Robert Scoble did with the makers of the app.

  • Looking for a Music Player App with FTP

I've been looking for a App that will play/stream  music files from
a FTP site (or personal cloud)
anybody seen an App  that does this?
    thanks!

Most cloud music players will only access their cloud folders, not
    an indépendant FTP folder.
I did find one that kinda works - DeadOn Player.
    but it's buggy and crashing.

  • Looking for a music player app for the ipad

Musician looking for music player app to play my sound library
    Folders, set lists......ect.....
Must be able to automatically pause between songs, not like iTunes where you have to manually pause
I have to time to manually pause between tracks since i use this for my live performances.
    All thoughts and advice welcome
    Doc

Try making a 5 second blank .mp3 file or however long you need your pause to be between songs, then create a playlist and insert the blank .mp3 between each song. Just a thought to help save some money.  I believe the DJay app allows this though, but you might want to ask the developer on their website before purchasing just to verify.
    Good luck,
    Christopher

  • Looking for a MP3 Player with good Bass.

    Hi,
I have a Nokia N73 Music edition phone. The built in MP3 player gives a decent output, but deep bass sounds are not reproduced properly and the overall sound is not very impressive (not crisp). I tested with two pairs of good Philips and Sony head phones, using a 2.5 mm audio converter (problem is not with the headphones).
Is there a good Symbian MP3 player with a good equalizer or special signal processing features to produce deeper bass sounds? (Like Sony Ericsson MegaBase)

Whatever you do to the sound with the processor (or a DSP) will be a compromise if the output stages aren't up to scratch.
The only things you can do are
increase the bass level (causes clipping in loud passages - I'm guessing this is what you tried and didn't like)
compress the bass (bass will be loud enough in quiet passages, but won't be louder in the loud passages - I think this is a bit more processor intensive and complex and doubt there's any software that does it)
    or
reduce the treble and midrange (you will have to turn the volume up, but if you can that's the best option as it should be lower in distortion). I would try this last idea and see how that does.

  • Looking for graphic cards compatible with the basic G5

    Help!!
Went to the Apple Store to see if my G5 (M9020LL/A) which is the 1.6GHz PowerPC to see if it was compatible/could drive the 30" cinema display. They assured me my G5 could handle the large display. I have OS 10.5.8, iLife 09, 1 TB HD, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM for the 8x AGP Pro slot.
The display arrived, I get picture but not resolution. Searched for a video/graphics card that was compatible. The ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac with 256MB was recommended. I purchased one but can only get it to work with a safe boot. Get resolution but iPhoto cannot do the photos in full screen mode. But I can get full screen photos in screen saver mode?!
Apple support states they only recommend/support two cards for my model, the Radeon 9600 @ 64 MB, 2480X1326 res or the Radeon Pro, 128 MB, 2480X1326 res.
Has anyone had a similar problem with the Radeon card 9600 Pro PC/Mac with 256MB? Does anyone have a solution as to which card would be compatible with my G5 and get 2560X1600 res?
Any suggestions? Thanks you for your help!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Apple support states they only recommend/support two cards for my model,
Those were the only two cards offered at the time, so that is their "official position". You may safely ignore them..... even though they lied to you regarding the 30" ACD and your machine.
Has anyone had a similar problem with the Radeon card 9600 Pro PC/Mac with 256MB?
Often reported here on the forum.
Not a good card. If it works, fine, but many report as you do....Safe mode only.
The G5 can use any 8x AGP graphics card that was available in any AGP model G5.
OEM Mac cards with dual link DVI for the 30" ACD are:
    Radeon 9650
    Radeon X800XT
    Geforce 6800 GT DDL
    Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL
A flashed (converted WinPC card) Geforce 7800 GS may also be used.
Any of the above cards can be found on eBay/Apple Components.

  • I'm looking for a brief explanation of the following three ES

Cisco strongly recommended we apply some recent Dialer and Campaign Manager ES’s proactively as these have several fixes other customers have needed on the SIP Dialer:
    o   8.5(3) ES3: http://i/patch?id=10746
    o   8.5(3) ES5: http://i/patch?id=10755
    o   8.5(3) ES6: http://i/patch?id=10766
o   Note that these are NOT cumulative so each should be applied in order.
Looking for an explanation in plain english regarding these patches above
What ES stands for and what thoses patches mean
    Any help will be appreciated
    Sincerely

ES stands for Engineering Special. Generally speaking an ES is a rollup of fixes that are not yet available in any public release. Additionally, the fixes have not gone through the more complete testing (e.g. regression testing) that a formal release has.
Most products have an ongoing changelog document that explain what defects are covered by each ES. You can use that to look up the details of each defect in the bug toolkit if the bug has been marked public. You typically have to obtain the changelog/release notes from the Cisco support resource you are working with. None of the ES information is public typically.
PS- Moving this thread to the Contact Center area might provide you more on-topic responses.

  • I need router with the following features

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a router but I would like to know if Linksys has a router that has these features
    1. Wireless and wired connection
    2. Set a specific bandwidth for each computer
    3. Storage link
    Thank you.

WRT350N has both 1 & 3 features you are looking for. Not sure about 2 though.

  • [SOLVED] Looking for a tiling WM with a certain feature

I've been using openbox/pekwm for a few years I recently tried tiling window managers again (tried them a few years ago and hated them) and I'm hooked but after trying just about all of the popular ones and reading the man pages/web sites I can't find any that have a certain feature I'd like (maybe I've just completely missed it). What I'd like is to have firefox in the master area (left hand side, about 50-60% width), whatever else I have open (usually one or two terminals and thunar) in the slave area and then pidgin buddy list open in a small thin area on the right hand side of the screen.
I'm not fussed about status/task bars or anything like that (but being able to add my own would be a bonus), prefer no window borders (like i3 or wmii) and would prefer something easy to configure (I don't mind learning haskell if xmonad is perfect for my needs but I'd rather avoid awesome as I've heard the config changes often and I'm not too keen on the built in task bar etc)
    Thanks

descendent87 wrote:what's the difference in dynamic and manual tyling managers?
Dynamic tilers have one or more pre-defined layouts for you to choose from and arrange the frames accordingly, while in manual tilers, you choose the size/arrangement of frames yourself.
What I'd ideally like is something where I can set so that firefox/chromium/uzbl (whatever browser I'm using) always opens in the master area, pidgin always opens in the far right hand side and anything else (terminals, thunar, mplayer) always opens in the slave erea (inbetween web browser and pidgin).
Well, this is doable with musca, though I've never even tried to set it up that way Though it's probably along the lines of:
    * Put commands in a ~/.musca_start file
    * In this file, set up frames as you want using commands like hsplit, vsplit, etc.
    * Set focus to the frame you want browser to appear in (also with above commands), start browser, dedicate frame to browser so no other window will appear in the same frame
    * focus next frame, start Pidgin
    * etc.
Unfortunately, this won't work with multiple browser windows, for example, since the dedicate command won't allow several browser windows to appear in the same frame. Also, my solution is *very* ugly (seems more like an Excel macro to me rather than a properly scripted solution ). There's probably a lot more possible with proper use of wmctrl, but I never got around doing much with it. If you really do want full control over your layout, I should probably recommend Xmonad, but I've had zero experience with it (a >500MiB ghc is a little spooky).
