I'm looking to get an iMac, but...

my work requires that I use Windows only apps as well as MS Office programs. I've been told that publisher and excel files made on a mac don't open properly on a PC. Are they actually compatible, and is there a way to run Windows only programs without Windows on the machine? I don't really want to have to partition the hard drive and run in Windows for work.

You've reached the older iMac forum for PPC machines made in 2005 & older.
The newer mac are intel based.
I'm looking to get an iMac, but...
Microsoft offers office for the Mac, on sale today for $79.99.  The file formats .docx, doc, etc. are the same.
Here is what Microsoft says:
"And since Office for Mac 2011 is compatible with Office for Windows, you can work on documents with virtually anyone, anywhere."
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products
Look under why you will like.
You can run Windows in a special support application called a virtual machine. I'm running xp right.
Have your cake and eat it too!
Don't miss the free VirtualBox.
"VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. " Runs Windows on Mac OS.
http://www.virtualbox.org/
With the Intel Macs, you can run Windows in a virtual machine. Folks are cloning their old windows to a Parallels virtual machine.
Parallels:
http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
With VMware Fusion, run the most demanding Mac and Windows applications side-by-side at maximum speeds without rebooting
http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
my work requires that I use Windows only apps as well as MS Office programs.
I've been told that publisher
I do not believe that MS Publisher is available on the Mac.
and excel files made on a mac don't open properly on a PC.
This info is out of data.  I've never had a problem.
is there a way to run Windows only programs without Windows on the machine?
You will need a copy of Windows to run in the virtual machine. Some commercial virtual machine implmentation make the Windows application act very simuliar to Mac Applications.
You could look into the free Wine Windows emulater that does let you run Windows programs on the mac.

have a macbook pro, looking at getting an iMac for home, can i share files easily i.e through a thunderbolt cable? dont want to use dropbox as it will take too long, need direct access to my macbook via the imac

Assuming you have a wireless network at home, just use file sharing. System Preferences / Sharing. Choose a folder you want to share and you're done.

  • I'd love to get an imac but is there a way to upgrade the sound card?

I love the new imac's.. but I would need to upgrade the sound card if I got one. I have a recording studio and i'm using a delta 1010 pci card that is compatible with macs.. I can't see how it would work with an imac.. I'm also a graphic artist and use a mac for all my graphics but it's an old g4 that isn't exactly up to the task of running my studio as well.. I'm sick and tired of my crappy pc giving me grief in the studio and an imac seems like the perfect and affordable price for me.. (i definately need an intel mac so i can run boot camp or parrallels to run a few programs that aren't available on a mac... **** you adobe audition)
does any know if there's any way this will work or do i have to save my pennies for a g5 desktop? (i kinda hope not because it will take me a LONG time to do that)

ahhh.. that's what i thought.. just was hoping I was wrong. Getting a new interface is NOT an option because I just got the system I have and am extremly happy with it... I used to work with a firepod but wasn't all that impressed... I like the 1010 because it gives me more options (mixing analogue and whatnot)
thank you very much for the advice

  • I am looking to buy an imac but have some questions...

Is it possible to use "windows only" software on any mac? I have some photo editing software that I use that is windows only.
    Thanks!
    Kari

As Duane mentioned yes you can use Boot Camp which is part of Leopard to boot your machine to either Leopard or Windows. Again as Duane mentioned you will need a license of Windows to do it. By using Parallels or VM Ware's Fusion these allow you to run Windows inside of Leopard, again you need a license of Windows to install. Personally I use Fusion, the performance on my iMac is faster than my new new Windows notebook supplied from work. The main advantage of Parallels or Fusion is you don't need to turn off your machine and reboot into a different OS.
Depending on the Windows software you are running you may find a Mac equivilant and rather than investing in Parallels or Fusion you can invest in that and run everything in Leopard's native enviorment.
If you have a Apple store close by drop in and they can show you exactly what I've described.

  • Want to buy new IMac  but which one?

    Hi guys,
Firstly I want to say that I do not own a Mac yet but am looking to buy one, I have very limited experience with them and am not sure where to start I also only use computers for general stuff like internet browsing watching a movie or 2 and sometimes editing videos, I don't play any games either. I am also not really up with the ins and outs of computers so bear with me.
I'm looking at getting an IMac 2.66 or 2.8GHz but I have a few questions.
Would you suggest that I buy the 2.66 as it looks like the same unit except for the processor speed and save some money for some more memory? Just on that I would probably buy the memory seperate and not get it upgraded when buying the IMac right? Because of the cost I could get it much cheaper elsewhere yes?!
A question about internet & Broadband use, I live in Darwin Australia and am using Bigpond Broadband ADSL 20000/512kbps I am not sure what I need to do to hook up an IMac, do I just use a ethernet cable as per PC do I need any other hardware for either model 2.66 or 2.8GHz?
I guess that's it for now, I hope you can help me, I'm sure you can.
Anything else you can tell me will be helpful as I'm keen to get one and get started.
    Thanks

    Hi BB4L -
I'm from the UK so not sure if I can help re the broadband question but I'll try my best. I use the 20inch 2.66GHz iMac at work and whilst the screen isn't amazing, it's a great, fast machine and would suit your needs perfectly.
You're right, you'd notice hardly any benefit between the 2.66 and 2.8 machines. They have the same HD, RAM and graphics card. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on maxing out your RAM to 4GB - this will give you a more significant speed increase. And don't use Apple to upgrade your RAM, buy it from somewhere cheaper and install it yourself - it's extremely simple. The instructions are [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1760]. A good choice of RAM is [here|http://www.crucial.com> although I'm not sure whether there's an Australian outlet. I just found [this|http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/mac-memory-upgrades/imac/i mac-intel-core2duo-penryn] site but obviously have never used them so couldn't say if they're good or not.
In terms of broadband, if you already have a modem/router box which came with your broadband then you can hook it up with an ethernet cable or connect wirelessly if the box is a wireless modem/router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it time to get an iMac?

I just read on macrumors that a guy successfully upgraded the yonah chip in his macmini to a merom one with no problems at all.
Now i'm the market for a desktop mac and the powermacs are a little overkill for me so i want to get an imac but the reason i havent is because i was waiting for the merom chips.
Now that someone has sucessfully done the upgrade, i'm thinking of getting an imac now since i can upgrade the chips later on when the merom chips start shipping since the iMac has a socket based processor as well.
Usually when doing upgrades like these from my experience, the graphics cards always dissapoint as well as BIOS compatibility...but i know the Radeon X1600 card is a very solid card that'll last for a while and that intel has promised the yonah and merom boards are backwards compatible. This also means we can finally go past the 2GB RAM limit, which can only leas to good things
So what do you think folks? should i go ahead with this mode of action?

wasn't aware the merom processor was already out...

  • Trying to Get Syslog to iMac but it looks like the Firewall is blocking

Mac OS Lion. iMac and Time Capsule hardwired to router.
I have the Syslog Destination Address set to my iMac, but I see in the iMac Console:
Firewall[106]: Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 192.168.1.67:514 from 192.168.1.65:514
Is there a way to allow this without turning stealth mode off or is this not the problem getting Syslog?

  • Looking to buy MacBook Pro or iMac-but which?

I currently have a MacBook, which I bought Feb 2010-- have since added/replaced RAM with generic 2x2GB (so now 4GB ram v. 2GB),-- 2.26GHz Duo Core 350GB drive.
I do LOTS of scrapbooks and movie stuff (have even considered making it more than just a hobby and perhaps make it a business)... anyhow, when I have applications open, such as: iPhoto, Aperture, Photoshop Elements, iMovie, iDVD running or some portion of those, it feels so slow.  Encoding is a long process, etc.
I had made the switch from Windows-based to Mac in Feb 2010... not knowing I'd like the Mac so much, I went with the base model.
Now, I'd like to get something beefier, but not sure what route to go.  As I can tell, the new MBP's are a large upgrade to my current MB (between quad core and GHZ and RAM speed), but enough for my needs?
If I were to get the iMac, could I connect my current MB to it via cable and use my MB as a monitor (so I can have somewhat the portability of a laptop-[as long as the cable is long enough to my "portable" spot], but the processor of the iMac?)
A 27" iMac seems to be beefier and yet cheaper than a 17"MBP... so, my inclination is to go with the iMac.  The portability concerns me a bit, because right now, I have an option to go "scrapbook" at someone else's house with my MB.... not so easy with an iMac (maybe not too bad with the 21.5" iMac-not that I'd like to move a desktop often)- I really don't do this often, but I do sometimes like to be lazy on a Saturday morning and work a bit on a scrapbook in my leather chair--- if I know I am going to be doing an in-depth movie project or scrapbook for a while, I'd be fine sitting at a desk.
One could say that since I already have a MB, I could use that on Saturday mornings and at friend's houses doing my projects there that would not be as complicated/processor-needy.... and, use the iMac whenever I am doing the heftier projects and when I am going to be doing a lengthier project.  I am only concerned that I will want to beat my MB with a baseball bat as it will seem even SLOWER than it is to me now since I'd be accustomed to the speed of the new iMac. (Not to mention that I'd have to transfer some data through an external drive in order to get files from one computer to another).
Right now, working on just iPhoto on my MB seems to be slow... my workflow on that for the books is that I have found that I like to work through one event at a time and not pull the photos into the project.  So, each time I need to change the event I am working on, I have to exit out of the project, view the event, then load back into the project so that I can select the "recent event" photos.  This process seems to take a bit more time than I'd like.  (My workflow has changed from the previous version of iPhoto as the information (date, etc) was a lot easier to view while in the project- now I have to have my cursor sit over the photo for like 10 seconds before a date and file name shows up-quite aggravating).
Perhaps there is a better way to just select some photos from each event first and then pull them into the project.  But, I do one page at a time... and have found I like being able to view in closer (in my photo library) on some photos before choosing them for the album-- and I just note which ones I like before heading back into the book.  I have iPhoto '11 btw.
NOTE I GIVE THIS INFO ABOVE NOT NECESSARILY TO CREATE A DIFFERENT THREAD ON IPHOTO POINTERS, BUT JUST TO POINT OUT THAT LOADING THINGS ON MY MB SEEMS TO BE TIME CONSUMING-MORE TIME CONSUMING THAN I'D LIKE.  Sometimes I have files in different iPhoto libraries for iMovie, which means I need to load in and out of iPhoto libraries and in and out of iMovie if I need libraries refreshed.
Once the question," iMac or MBP?", is answered, my questions head to:
    upgrade the GHZ?
upgrade from 4GB RAM to 8GB (or 16GB on the iMac)?-- have heard more than 4GB might not be very useful- I have 4GB now, and wonder if that would have helped me out with my slowness to be able to go higher than 4GB (which my MB is limited to 4GB anyway).
assume the 7200RPM would be better on the MBP with smaller hard drive?
glossy or anti-glare?- my main use is photo editing and video-making--- don't play games and really don't watch movies.  I have heard the matte is better for photo-editing as it seems like a truer representation of how printings will look.
was figuring I'd get the hi-res screen no matter what model I got- worth it?
was considering refurbished if the options coincide with my needs.  should I be concerned doing this?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

You need to keep the MacBook Pro for other uses, forget getting a overheating "you can't change anything but the RAM, cost you a arm and a leg to fix it" iMac and get yourself a Windows tower where you CAN upgrade the video card time to time, and CAN tweak things and CAN switch out the monitor, the keyboard, add surround sound cards and tons of other things for your 3D gaming experience.
I know this sounds like blasphemy on a Apple site, but it's the god honest truth.
Your clearly in the "competitive" aspect of 3D gaming and all the newest, most powerful video cards are on Windows as there are more users on Windows, thus a larger market for buying upgrade cards.
3D games only really need a dual core processor as all their "work" is really video card (GPU) related.
Windows towers are also a heck of a lot less expensive than a MacPro, and all the "games choices" are on Windows.
Mac's are ALWAYS significantly behind their Windows cousins when it comes to 3D games and with laptops your restricted by battery or heat issues, unlike towers with their massive cooling.
MacPro's have trouble getting new video cards, back in the PowerMac days it was easy as they thought the "Mac is back as a 3D gamers machine" until the Intel swtich that is, it's like now you only get what comes with the new machine and god forbid if you went cheap.
Windows 7 is not that bad actually, it's a lot more "pleseant" and secure than before, you can install the free Microsoft Security Essentials and it will protect you from most casual malware. Sure enough just using it for gaming isn't going to bother you much, you'll hardly see it or use it, just long enough to launch the game.
Just don't go treating it like you would a near immune Mac and you shoudl be fine.
I'll let the Cinebench score show you what your missing.

  • Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer but it won't restart.  I just keep getting the same message every time.

Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the light gray start up screen with a message that I need to restart my computer and to hold the power button until it powers off and then press the power button again to restart.  It just does this over and over again and won't restart.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. Have a look at this link for more info on a Kernel Panic.

All I want is all my contacts on my phone and the same on my iMac, but no, that's too much to ask, instead I get everything doubled up on the phone and everything doubled up (triple in some cases) on the iMac, why does it do this? and more importantly how can I stop it? Thanks

Look under system preferences on the mac at what is be controlled?  Look at Mail, Contacts, Calendars.  How many accounts are managing contacts?  Just the cloud? the cloud and gmail? or cloud, gmail, yahoo, and exchange?  If you have more than one contact account, then you will have different contact lists, if John Smith shows up in more than one of your contact lists, you will have multiple entries.
Pick a contact list that is your master, (I use iCloud), only turn on contact syncing for it.  The same for your phone.  Spend some time on the iCloud webset (www.icloud.com) and work on your contact list there.  Clean it up, remove duplicates, etc...Changes will auto sync back to all your devices.  Life gets much simplier.
Just remember, if you sync different contacts lists and a large number of people appear in your different lists, then they will appear as duplicates.

  • Cannot get printer to print with my iMac but will print from my dell laptop?

cannot get my printer to print with my imac but will print from my dell laptop?

OK, well you haven't provided any information so there isn't anything we can do. What is needed at the bare minimum is:
Exactly what printer are you referring to?
How is it connected to the iMac (USB, Wi-Fi, etc...)?
What steps you have taken to connect the printer?
What errors you have run into.
What I would recommend is using Apple's Printing Overview OS X Lion to learn how to install it. Also take a look at Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion to see if it's even compatible with Lion.

  • Looking to get a new imac

I currently have an iMac 20 inch which I have had for almost a year now. My dads computer isnt functioning the way he needs it to so we are thinking about giving mine to him and me getting a new iMac. The question I have is this...I do video work in final cut studio so I do video rendering, and Im looking into getting the 24 inch 2.88 Ghz model. Would that computer be ok for what Im doing or should I get the 3.06 Ghz model for the better performance? I don't do a ton of video work but when I do its pretty heavy rendering. Im just not sure if I should get the 2.88 Ghz or 3.06 Ghz model. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

My opinion would be to go with the 3.06GHz model. I just got mine last week and I run all Adobe apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) along with always having my Mail, iTunes and Safari open.
I made sure to max out the RAM at 4GB and it has been a superb machine for me to this point. You may not notice a large difference in the processor speeds, however every little bit counts and you get the GeForce 8800GS card with 512MB which for your use is a much better card than the ATI in the 2.8 model.
For me, it was also a factor of wanting the best model out there so it takes just that much longer to become obsolete.
If the few extra hundred dollars are not an issue, I highly recommend the 3.06GHz model. I will also add the 24" is awesome in terms of real estate. Makes my 23" ACD at work look tiny! Good luck with your decision. Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.  I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion.

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • How can I get spam mail sent straight to trash on my iPad and iPhone.  Have managed to set rules on my iMac but not the rest.

How can I set up rules to get spam emails sent straight to my trash when I am using an iPhone4S or iPad3?  Have managed to do this on my iMac but can't see a way to do it on the other devices.  Getting about 50 a day recently using my email address but not my name in the messages - no idea why this has started but it is annoying!!

You cannot set rules on the iPad or the iPhone for mail. The only thing that you can do is to filter spam mail in your webmail settings using a web browser. The rules that set up in the mail app on the Mac do not sync across devices, those are rules for inside the mail client itself on the Mac.
