I'm looking to supercharge my G4. What are my options?

Hi, I'm the proud owner of a Power Mac G4 FW800, the dual 1.42GHz one. I just had the power supply repaired, and it runs wonderfully, other than it's starting to show its age. I'd like to know what I can do to maximize performance.
Here are my slight problems:
- Slower than desired file transfers
- Extremely slow video rendering
- iWork '09 complains about Core Image not being supported
- Minecraft 1.5.2 not exactly playable (~4 FPS, at least 15 FPS desired)
I also have the full CS4 Design Premium suite, and I'd like to get better performance out of that.
My budget is around $200, what are my options? Thanks!

Here is a picture of my MDD with the ATA133 RAID0 PCI card and a SATA PCI card.  For a high performance striped RAID, you want each drive on it's own cable, hardware RAIDs will only stripe together a pair of Masters and/or a pair of Slaves.  The ATA133 RAID0 card is probably the fastest performance you can get in the MDD with compatibility going back to OS 9.  Not sure if there exists a similar hardware RAID SATA card for MDDs.  But even a single SATA PCI  drive does pretty fast as well.  The on-board built-in ATA66 and ATA100 IDE interfaces in the MDD are much slower than these PCI card options.
See how the pATA ribbon cables have to route over the video card and heat sink, very cluttered.  The SATA cable is much easier to work with.  Here I have two drives in the front bay and just one in the rear bay.  There are two cooling fans stuck to the heat sink to blow into the fins, these nest within the drive bracket in the rear bay when closed.
I am planning to migrate my data to the SATA drive and put another one in the front bay, and remove the striped RAID PCI card and drives, leaving the rear bay empty.

My ipod nano 6th gen fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked badly, is there any coverage for this under warranty? I just bought it a month ago. If not what are the options for getting it fixed? It is pretty frustrating, it fell from about 3 feet out of my pocket and now looks like it was beaten by a hammer.

That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

  • If my hard drive disappears and is no longer running what are my options?

this is a last resort. Dropped the MBP. it wouldn't boot up. wouldn't boot in any mode, did the resets in order. safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation. It finally booted off the install DVD. Hard drive icon there. Did an archive and install. I did all the disk util prior to  archive and install. permissions and disk checked out ok.
Attached a USB external. started backing things up manually. SU came up and i did the combo update to 10.5.8
Restarted MBP and the drive died, not even getting to login screen, onlly endless spinning at startup screen identical to problem after dropping it. installed Leopard on external. tried to set startup disk from internal. icon not there as if drive did not exist.
After HD crash, ran diskutil in verbose mode, device not present when i used the name,
note: this is the second external drive. i did the combo update on the external and it also died. couldn't see the icon. booted into single user mode. device no found. Again, safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation.
at this time, the external is leopard 10.5, no update, firefox running with adobe flash update.
    1. SU combo update, never again. use the one from the Apple website in all future updates.
    2. physical inspection of inside revealed no loose connections, broken cables or wires.
    3. dropped the MBP on the side of the optical drive which i had to repair and reinstall. works fine now. PRAM battery in good order.
    4. looked at every discussion from every forum on here with varying results, all dead ends.
if the drive isn't spinning or responding, is it dead or frozen? is $99 for diskwarrior the next step? Will it even see the internal drive, since no other freeware or shareware recovery apps have been able to see the internal HD.
what are my options? i had no backups made, i have no firewire cable or drive, i didn't know about time machine, i absolutely must have the drive restored, or the data.

    diskwarrior manual:
To build a graph for the directory of a disk, all of the following must be true:
1)The disk must appear on the desktop.
2)The disk must be an HFS (Mac OS Standard) or HFS Plus disk (Mac OS Extended).
3)The disk must be locally attached.
4)There must not be any detected hardware problems with the disk.
disk does not appear on HD. therefore i have to assume there is physical damage to internal drive, pull it
install a new one and send the old one to data recovery.
this here concludes today's discussion on "*** were you thinking when you didn't have a back up"
also, investing in Firewire drives and cables is selling out to proprietary mandates that Apple thought up as one more way to tie up its users to Apple theology. reason one i have refused to put the money out for it.
    guess the man wins.

I need to upgrade my MacBook late 2008, what are my options. I have already upgraded RAM to 4 GB some 4 years ago. Also replaced HDD to 1TB, but ended up with a slower response. I am looking to switch the HDD again to speed up the performance. Any suggestions?
I am open to upgrade the hardware, what options do I have?
    Motherboard?

I think that Predixion Insight is the easiest tool to use and is very powerful.
All you need to have is Windows OS, Office 2010 or 2013 and internet connection. If you want to look at what you need to do before installing Predixion, I recommend you to take a look at the walkthroughs at

  • Yosemite is awful- unable to empty trash, volume options are haywire, error codes on file management, and files won't replace when moved. What are my options at this point?

Like the topic - "Yosemite is awful- unable to empty trash, volume options are haywire, error codes on file management, and files won't replace when moved. What are my options at this point?"
I installed this OS, and it looks nice, but it's terrible to use. I randomly have the volume controls get disabled, and sometimes the volume menu in the system tray does nothing when adjusted which I've never seen in an OS before. The trash won't empty. When I try to drag and drop newer files over existing ones, nothing happens. The old ones just stay there. I have to delete the old ones and then move the new ones. And when I go into the protected files to manage audio plugins (I make music), the first thing I hit are error codes galore, and password prompts that either don't popup when they should, or don't execute the command after I provide my password.
What can I do now that I installed the flames of **** onto my computer?

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Buying New Phone but Contract  can't yet what are my options???

Okay I dropped my phone in some water and had to find a replacement it is a razor but being it was given to me there are issues with it... The phone changes settings on its own and I can't access VM called Verizon and they can't help with changing it and the one that is in the phone is unknown. Talke with Verizon and then Tech Support and they did nothing and said they have no way to know what it is did a master reset and so on.
So here is my question being the contract the phone is under does not allow new phones till December and I can't extend the contract being it is a business phone what are my options? From what I learned buying just a phone from Verizon is a costly one, and if you buy one from an online source the two I got where prepay only and not able to be used on an existing contract.
If I take my replacement used phone to a Verizon Store can they get the Pin number out of? I know they are there to sell you a new phone and want you to extend your contract . The cost of a "NEW" Phone is in the hundereds of dollars when you get it for next to nothing when you sign a contract.
Is there any good place I can get a "New Phone and reactivate it as a replacement and know what the pins are being the one I have now though used Verizon can't not hop[ena dn since it turns off the ringer now and then I miss calls and get vms I can get.
Any suggestions or just go and buy a new phone whatever the best cost is and be done with this???
ANy information on what I can do seems that Verzion can only help so far via the phone and going to a store from what I have experienced and heard is requiring an contract extension and then you get a new phone for a better price. Which again I can not do.
Just looking for some good information on wat the options are???
    MikeMich

Thanks, Looks like I am stuck with the current phone even though no one at Verizon can assist me in getting the pin for the vm feature. As for ebay I contacted 2 sellers that stated their phones were good to be used on Contract the first one I got I called attempted to activate it and they told me it could only be used as a "PrePaid" Phone. I had to return it and the seller want me to end the transaction as if his listing was valid even though it stated could be used on a existing contract. Being he was also in Michigan I got it within a few days but then had to return it. Seems many list their phones like this but when you contact them and ask they kind of side step it and the auction ends. This seller had good feedback maybe because some don't leave any because of the same issue. I looked at whast the phones are listed at an 300 + unless you sign an additional  2 years which I can't do being it is a company phone and paying twice is also not worth it using it as a prepaid phone for 6 months...
Looks like they got you anyway so I will just have to continue getting vms and no access and hope the phone lasts until they can get new ones...
Sad fact is there should be a better way to get a replacement phone. Since I don't know any Verizon Dealers when I had another carrier the guy was great he would do anything including rebuild a doa phone with parts he collected as people upgrade but at Verizon they just want you to "upgrade" and "extend" the contract Which I am not the admin person to make that decision
Guess you have to know someone and I don't...
Such is life these days...At least for me....

  • Changing HDD to SSD, what are the options?

hi, guys, new to the forum, I just bought a thinkpad x130e during an on sale event at one of the local retailer, pretty excited, since i like the rugged design.
I am looking at an upgrade from 320G HDD to a 128G SSD... but i don't have any windows 7 installation disc handy, so what are the options for me to install the operating system (windows 7).
I don't know if there is a way to transfer the whole system from HDD to SSD? will there be any trick to perform? or simply i just have to purchase new copy of windows?
cos i noticed i do have a windows7 pro product key at the bottom of my thinkpad, i kinda don't want to waste the money.
    please help..
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You don't need to purchase another copy of Win7. You will need
    1. SSD. This must be 7mm thick, not the more common 9.5mm thick.
    2. USB enclosure for your HDD,
    3. Software to "clone" the contents of your HDD to your SSD. Acronis True Image is a well-regarded package that does this. There are also some free utilities that can do this, however, I'm not familiar with them.
    Procedure:
    1. Move the HDD to the external enclosure.
    2. Put the SSD in the X130e.
    3. Reboot from the HDD. (You'll need to interrupt boot with Blue ThinkVantage button to specify.)
    4. Install Acronis (or equivalent.)
    5. Perform disk clone operation. You will need to tell the software how you want to resize partitions since you're going to a smaller disk.
    6. Reboot from SSD.

  • What are my options for a data plan + upgrade?

So my old phone (Samsung Intensity) broke today, and I'm looking to upgrade to a smartphone. I would prefer an iPhone, but really it's not that big of a deal if I get a Droid. I'm eligible for an upgrade currently. What are my options for a smartphone and a data plan? I'm looking for what's the cheapest option as far as this goes. People tell me an iPhone is free with an upgrade, and that the cost is $20 a month, but I just want to be sure.

Unless you have an old calling plan, you should be able to add a tiered data plan for your new smartphone (i.e., $30 for 2 GB).  If you switched to the Share Everything plan, your monthly cost would be $40 line access + at least $50 for 1 GB data (includes unlimited minutes/texts and mobile hotspot, although the hotspot data usage comes out of your data plan), plus, of course, taxes/fees (and insurance, if applicable).
You can check pricing for phones via your on-line MyVerizon account if you click on the Upgrade button.  If you are mainly interested in free phones (keep in mind that there's a $30 upgrade fee), there's the Nokia Lumia 822, Spectrum 2, Droid Razr M, iPhone 4, Galaxy Stellar, Marauder, Rhyme, and the Lucid.  Several of those are 3G phones.

  • What are my options for adding an additional single app...

Okay, hopefully this will make sense:
I have the Student & Teacher CC subscription.  I'd like to use Illustrator CS6 on an additional computer.  What are my options?  (Obviously, the most cost-effective option is what I'm looking for!)
    Jon

Jon you can purchase a single subscription or full Creative Cloud subscription but I would recommend subscribing under a separate account.  This is to help ensure that your subscription are handled properly and you receive proper activation credit for the subscriptions which you have purchased.
You other option is to look into Creative Cloud for Teams but it does not appear that you are looking for enough licenses to justify a team subscription.  You can find more information however at http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/teams.html

  • G4 with not boot with Tige- what are my options

    I have a PowerMac G4 500MHZ with a newly installed 120GB ATA drive and 1.5GB of RAM.
In the last few weeks, I have tried all of the following.
I installed OS9 on the new drive. I performed all the updates to 9.2.2. I made sure all software was updated, and my firmware was current. I have the old DVD-RAM drive, which did use to read DVD movies, but from what I read on the forums here, it would not be sufficient to boot from the Tiger DVD disc. So, I booted in Target Disk mode to my G5. I used my G5's superdrive to install Tiger on the G4 drive that was loaded on my desktop. Everything seemed to work fine, but after I power down the G4 and turn it back on, I get the Apple logo and spinning gear (as if Tiger is going to load) but that is far as it goes.
I even tried the other way around, I booted my G5 in Target Disk mode to my G4 so I could still use my superdrive to install Tiger. And here is where I think the problem lies somewhere. When I clicked on "Install OSX" and it tells you to restart, it will not boot from the OSX disc. I have a feeling there is something wrong internally with the G4 that is preventing it from booting in OSX, because I was able to install Tiger on the G4's drive when it was in target disk mode on the G5, but it will not boot in Tiger on its own. I also tried installing from an external firewire DVD (Pioneer A4, super) and I get the same thing every time. The only way I even get to go through the Install process is when the G4 is in target disk mode to the G5.
Am I looking at sending this thing in for service? what are my options? I feel like I'm running out of them.
I also replaced the lithium battery in the G4 because another forum indicated that could also be a problem. If I take this to an Apple store for service, what kind of cost am I looking at? I know thats a tough questions as it could be anything. If its the mother board, what kind of cost am I looking at?
    any suggestions are welcome.

"...what do you mean by PRAM rest?"
Sorry that should be "reset" read this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Then do as it says...this fixed the same problem with my daughter's iBook after a Tiger upgrade
"...does that mean just for installation or its fussy period?"
I have had experiences where the installer would crash with the 3rd party RAM installed but run fine with just the OEM RAM in the computer. After installation was complete, the 3rd party RAM was re-installed with not problems...

  • Hi. i have a 1hr wedding video in imovie but it wont let me burn to disc - what are my options please?

Hi. i have a 1hr wedding video in imovie but it wont let me burn to disc - what are my options please?

    Hi
Or if in Panic - There are free (but very vey simple) options
    No iDVD
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • Burn -  Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
    • Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store - Looks really OK !
    Pay program's:
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

My wife has a small Mac book. I'd like to get her an inexpensive second monitor. What are my options?

You'll probably need two things: Most MacBooks don't have a standard video plug so you'll need a dongle to connect the computer to the display. Which dongle she needs depends on which computer she owns and whether you buy an analog or digital display. I recommend digital. I have two displays that I like a lot, one is a Dell 22" HD - rather expensive but gorgeous and the other is a 24" Samsung digital - much less expensive but very good. If you aren't sure which dongle to get look under the Apple menu for About this Mac and then click on the more information button and you'll get the exact computer model use that information to search the net or come back here and let us know which model she owns.

  • Want to downgrade from Leopard to Tiger - what are my options?

    Hi,
I installed Leopard on my partner's iBook G4 (1.2ghz) and its speed has reduced to a crawl. I would like to go back and re-install Tiger from its original install discs but need to retain the home folder. What are my options and am I going to come across any issues downgrading? (aside from any apps that require Leopard)
    Thanks,
    Neil

If you had an external FireWire hard disk drive enclosure,
of the bootable-type chipset, Mac compatible, and chose
to clone the Leopard full installation to that external drive
(as most externals do have or can be equipped with a
faster spinning hard disk drive, it boots performance and
could be used at home for desktop computing) it is very
possible to clone the OS X and everything off the iBook
and again try your luck with Tiger 10.4.11 in the iBook.
If clones appear to be an option, be certain the cloned
computer contents (a full computer clone) is made on
a partitioned hard disk drive in proper enclosure; and
the clone is tested prior to erasing the host computer's
original drive contents. You can make clones and then
there are Clones. Some can just work, but once in
awhile, they don't. The two well known clone utilities
are good options, and reading up on the topic helps.
re: Carbon Copy Cloner, Bombich; and Super Duper.
Free space may be at a premium in the small internal
hard disk drive of the iBook; and older previous system
folders, saved from other Archives, Updates, etc may
have to be looked for, and trashed if they exist.
The latest iLife 09 was not recommended in some
hardware configurations by users and others who
tried that version in older PPC hardware; the iTunes
is a download, so it should work in Tiger equally well.
The iDVD and iMovie, may have issues; iPhoto is
OK in some older PPC G4s and not others.
And older applications added to the installation which
worked well under Tiger may not be happy in Leopard.
    And your mileage may vary...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Old iMac (2007) dead screen; what are my options?

I have an old iMac from 2007, one of the polycarbonate models, running OS X 10.6.8, which recently lost its screen. By "lost," I mean that one night as I was using it, the screen stopped refreshing the image of the show I was watching, and did not change until I manually shut down the computer. Since that time, whenever I turn it on the screen is completely black. Despite this, I still appear to be able to successfully input commands with the keyboard. I haven't consulted a technician yet, but from what I read it seems that the screen data drive is bad; it's not just the backlight.
    My questions are two:
What price range should I look for to get the screen fixed, if that's possible at this point?
What are my options for getting into this mac to perform one last backup?  (I have another iMac from the same era that had another screen problem which eventually rendered it useless, but before it went completely bad I set it up to allow screen sharing over wi-fi, so I can still get into that one, which makes me wonder if I can hack into this iMac through its wifi.)

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine..
