I'm loosing too much battery life. All apps are closed.

Hi,
I'm loosing too much battery life and all apps are closed. Can you help?
Thank you!

Hello, mcnairkp.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Battery life can be difficult to troubleshoot as multiple factors contribute to how long a charge can last.  Graphic intensive applications, display brightness and data connectivity are just a few of the items that can cause the battery life to decrease rapidly.  I would need to know a little more information about your usage patterns to give you and idea on how to maximize battery life.  However, here are some tips on how to adjust settings and charge the device that may help.

    Most likely a bad battery.

Press the escape (esc) key to exit full-screen mode.

  • When all apps are closed the text vanishes from my toolbar.  How do i get it back?

When all the apps are closed the text vanishes from the tool bar at the top of the screen.  The apple icon is still there on the far left but clicking on it does nothing.  I can't log out!!!!

How do I find that out? I just switched to Apple and am finding it really hard to find stuff.

  • My phone is freezing, restarting too much, and erased all apps!?

I have a serious problem i believe. For about 10 days i can hardly using my phone. Phone has started too freeze and restart itself too much. And 3 days ago it has erased all the apps for home screen but i can see apps are still covers same amout of memory. My apps store is not showing anything also. For the question what caused this; only thing comes to my mind is the last app i installed. (wikiplaces app) What should I do? what is this? Does not see like ram overuse causşng this. (2,5 gb used memory on phone)

It might work, it might not.  Many users get only the latest backup to choose from when performing a restore.  If your backup was made after the delete, then it won't work.   If you do try a restore, I would strongly advise that you sync your photos from your device to a compter using USB (that's safer than relying on photo stream).  There are countless posts by users who restored and lost all their photos.

  • My Ipad 2 is timing out while using it.  Battery is charged and all apps are closed.

My Ipad 2 is timing out while I'm using it and I can't figure out why.  I've made sure that all of the apps are shut down. The screen goes blank and thepassword screen shows up a few seconds later.

Your apps aren't just crashing, or you would be taken back to the home screens and not the screen where your passcode have to be entered. Seems like something is corrupt. Have you rebooted the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen? I don't think that's likely to fix the problem but it will not hurt anything to try that first.
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.

  • How do I fix message "computer has run out of application memory" even tho all apps are closed

Since loading Mavericks my iMac 27-inch (2009) 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 stays almost out of virtual memory and often pauses all apps and messages "computer has run out of application memory." I have run spindump, but no significant difference is made.

Spindump is a diagnostic tool used by Apple. It doesn't fix anything.
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if it's not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
The System Memory tab of the Activity Monitor window shows how physical memory is being used. "Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • External drives won't dismount despite the fact that all apps are closed.

I've got 2 external drives and suddenly I can't shutdown my computer b/c the drives will not dismount. I keep getting an error message "The drive 'hello' is in use and could NOT be ejected. Try quitting apps and try again"
There are 0 apps open. Everything has been closed for over 10 minutes. ?

is a little app that will tell you what is holding the drive. Usually Spotlight or time machine related in my case, even though neither is doing anything at the time. I usually end up logging out and in again to be able to eject the drive,

Downgrading isn't supported and wouldn't help.  You need to fix your phone.
    1. Delete and reinstall all email accounts.
2, Restore the phone in iTunes, first  using a backup and if needed as a new phone.

Removing the favicons, changing the titles to 1-4 characters without spaces, and putting some or most into folders still readily accessible from the bookmarks toolbar
would help a lot. Also changing the size of the bookmarks toolbar text and color with a Style to differentiate between folders and bookmark/bookmarklets would help, see

  • I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I have a very limited amount of wifi data, and I am exceeding my monthly allowance. Apparently, even apps I think are not open are sending/receiving data through the wifi and using up my allowance.

I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I am on a very limited amount of WiFi data each month, which I am regularly exceeding. I have been told to work out which of my apps is using the data. Also, I think I have closed an app by double clicking the home button, then swiping the app up - is this the way to close it, or will it still be sending/receiving data?

Go into your Settings : General : and turn off background refresh for your apps.  In Settings : Mail  turn Fetch new data to OFF and Load Remote Images to OFF.  This will mean that Mail will only check for messages when you actually use it, and all your advertising junk mail won't have all the images in it.
Turn off push notifications every chance you get.
Make sure you are actually quitting apps:  to quit apps press the Home button twice and you should see a bunch of smaller screen images for every open app.  To quit the app swipe from the screen image (not the icon) upward off the top of the iPad.  You can swipe left and right to see more open apps, but there must be no left-right movement on the screen when you swipe upward to close the app.
Turn off your internet connection when you do not need it.  The easiest way to do this is to swipe up from the bottom of you screen to get the control centre, and then touch the airplane to turn on airplane mode.  You can repeat this sequence to turn it back on again when you need it.  Most especially turn airplane mode on whenever you are sleeping your iPad for long periods.  This will save battery life too.  OR actually turn your iPad off - which means holding the power key down for several seconds until the red swipe bar appears, and then swipe to turn it off.  If you go this route, note that it will take longer to turn on then it takes to wake from sleep.

  • Updated iPad to iOS5.  Now all apps are gone!

I updated the OS on my iPad 1st gen to 5.  I got the restore error like many people have gotten.  I tried again and it succesfully updated to 5.  When I finally got through the initial setup, I noticed all the apps I purchased were gone!  I did a restore and it was the same state.  So, I restored from a backup I did yesterday.  All my apps are still gone.
    Any ideas?

First of all: before you upgrade, always make a backup of your device in iTunes!
The following happens when upgrading to iOS 5 (this is different from previous system upgrades!):
The installer creates automatically a restore file
Then a clean system is installed on your device, all your data will be removed. Don't panic, this will be ok later on.
When the os is updated you get a few configuration questions (i.e. language settings).
At one point you're given a choice:
configure device as a new device
    restore from iCloud
    restore from iTunes
Unless you want to start all over, choose the third option.
All your settings will be restored at first and your device will restart.
Now comes the tricky bit: After restart your device will work fine as if the process is finished. i.e. you can send and recieve mails. At this point you will not see the apps you had installed, also you're photo's and movies will not be on your device. (I was fooled buy this one at first too)
Do not disconnect your device or quit iTunes! In the background iTunes is still restoring the rest of your data. (Switch to iTunes and you'll see the progress.) This can take some time, depending on how much apps you had installed. One by one you'll see apps appearing on your device. You can't use the untill the whole restore is finished.
When all apps are back, your photo's and video's will be restored.
So please be patient. It took me more than an hour to get everything back in place.
The only small annoyance: there are new Apple-apps added to the homescreen. They're 'pushed' to the second screen by your own homescreen apps, leaving your second screen almost empty. Now you only have to rearrange the apps on the second screen.
If all turns out bad, because you unplugged your device too early, go back to your restore file you made yourself before upgrade. (You did do that, didn't you?) and start the process all over.

  • After Upgrade to Yosemite, all apps are slow.

I upgraded to Yosemite  and all applications are slow.  ( as e.g.. starting to type in this box give me beachball for 2 seconds initially) A big difference in speed from Mavericks to Yosemite. Opening system preferences takes 3 seconds to load, and clicking on Users & Groups takes 25 seconds to open.
    I do not have fire vault enabled.  I did a safe boot and some apps did appear to open faster. Also did a repair disk and rebooted.  No change. When Safari is open it takes 5 seconds to open a new window.   I ran EtreCheck and the report is as follows;
Thanks for any help;( After pasting the EtreCheck text file, I clicked on this box to add the Thanks... , it took 2-3 seconds for the beach ball to stop spinning.)

You could do that, but when setting up your new iMac it is a much better idea to transfer only your existing User Accounts. In other words when Setup Assistant appears, de-select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" and "Other files and folders". That way you will eliminate the possibility of reinstalling potentially incompatible software from your existing Mac or its TM backup. It's best to create new printer queues and preferences anyway.
Your venerable HP 1012 will probably work without any difficulty but if you need its driver download it here. If it gives you trouble try OS X's generic PostScript driver.
After configuring your user account, install original versions of your essential software from their original sources. In other words if you installed them via download from the developer's website, download them again. You might need license keys so gather them. Obviously the Mac App Store makes things easy since anything you obtain from there is already linked to your Apple ID and is easily reinstalled by going to your Purchases page.
Don't reinstall things like AppCleaner, CleanMyMac, Western Digital "Smartware" or any of that junk. You don't need it. MacFUSE is outdated. Research Prolific Technology for potential updates for their serial controller. The one you have may work, or not, but you should re-download its driver.
Consider abandoning Microsoft altogether and migrating to better solutions such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They are all free with a purchase of a new Mac and are far more integrated with OS X than anything Microsoft will ever be able to accomplish.
The Burr-Brown USB device is unknown to me, so research TI's website for support if you need it.
If your essential software was distributed on optical media, you can use OS X's "DVD or CD sharing" feature to remotely mount the older iMac's optical drive so that you can install its software. It will work as though that drive were physically installed on your new Mac. Having said that, anything that was distributed on optical media is highly likely to have been outdated a long time ago.
If your essential software is old, orphaned, no longer supported, or is no longer available, meaning you have the only viable copy, the only option is to transfer it from the TM backup or older Mac. In that case be very cognizant of the likelihood for incompatibility, and have a plan for uninstalling it should it cause adverse effects. Creating a new TM backup is the way to do that. A new external HD dedicated to the new Mac is a cheap investment. When you are certain you no longer require the older Mac's TM backup, you can erase it and use it as an additional, redundant TM backup or "clone" repository – whichever you decide is best for your backup needs.
