I'm lost in imovie

I've just started using it for a couple of different things, and i'm lost. I can't find any 'how to' to do what i thought would be straightforward but isn't.
I dont' even know how to ask my question, what i need is some kind of iMovie for Dummies that is available on the web, like right now, not something i have to buy, like a book, i don't mind buying one but i don't have time to wait for a book to get here. Are there any tutorials that start at the beginning?
I created a project tonight (for example), and i don't even know what that means, 'create a project.' When i first started working on this, i thought i knew what that meant, but now, I have about 15 projects in the Project Library, but most of them are blank, including the last one i recorded. Mysteriously, that one is now a Quicktime movie that i can play in the Quicktime player. I didn't make it a Quicktime movie. I guess i must've hit a button that did that. I was trying to cut half of the video off because it ***** and i wanted to make a new video without that sucky part, and i was trying to just copy and paste it. I did that with earlier videos but can't find the path i took to do that. I 'shared' a couple other ones as Quicktime movies from the Share menu and happily was able to get the .mov file onto my desktop--that's something i can understand, a discrete file. but this last thing i recorded, i tried just selecting the frames i wanted to turn into a finished product but i couldn't do anything with them. I couldn't drag them to that window were you drag stuff, i couldn't copy and past it anywhere. I copied it and then i selected 'New Project' but creating the new project didn't produce something i could paste those frames into. Then, right after that, while i was groping around and trying to do what i was trying to do, i ended up in another project, just because i clicked on it in the Project Library, but when i tried to go back to the one i was working on, it's nowhere to be found, not in the Project Library, not in that lower big window where all the frames are, where it was before it disappeared. And then, magically, i found a KB sized link to it in the Movies folder, which opened it in Quicktime. But it's still unedited and i still want to get rid of those frames i don't want.
I tried importing the movie back into iMovie but it's grayed out in the window where you choose what you want to import.
I just don't get iMovie. I tried using the Help file but no luck. It presupposes that i know how to do the basics, which i unfortunately don't.
What would be straightforward to me would be to hit record, then hit stop/capture, and save the movie, and it would be a movie file that i could then edit and save again, etc. I sort of did that on some earlier projects but dont' know how i did it. I shared on in You Tube and then made another edited version of it, and sent that one to You Tube and removed the first one. But this time, i can't remember how i edited that earlier one, and when i did it, it was just by groping around.
Is there a How To beginners tutorial for this program? Any idea why this project i'm working on is not showing up all of a sudden? The name is in the project Library but it's just dark, nothing there. But it is some kind of quicktime file, somewhere. Is there any way i can edit this? I mean, just cut off the part i don't want? i can't get it back into iMovie so there's not much else i can do on this project at this point.
sorry i don't have a clear question. All i know how to do is describe what i'm trying to do, and what has seemed to happen that's not working for me.

and the built-in Help of iMovie (as any other Apple app) explains a lot..

  • OS X Lion Version 10.7.5 and after new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, etc.

I have the OS X Lion version 10.7.5 and after a new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band etc. I have tried the re-install of the OS X Lion and checking the app store under 'purchases' but none of these options were successful.
When I click on iPhoto in the App Store, it says that it cannot update because version 10.9 is required (I tried to transfer iPhoto from my brothers computer but he has a newer laptop which means I cant open it whcih is why it says 'update' but have deleted it now). When I go to iMovie on the App Store, it says I need to pay but the only reason I dont want to do that is that it origionally came on the computer and after paying Apple to install a new hard drive I dont want to have to pay for all the apps that origionally come on it.
    Can someone please help

Then you will need the Original System Reinstall DVD discs that came with the system to reinstall the iLife suite of apps then you can update them from the Mac app store or through Software Update.
Those discs came in the box the computer came in. Hopefully you still have the box and those discs.

  • Lost iphoto, imovie & garageband after restore

I restored my macbook and lost iphoto, imovie & garageband. I have a late 2011 Macbook pro which came with no ilife disc so i can't use that

Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

iMovie project is "lost" on iMovie project listing.  Can find in in "my files" but can't see it in iMovie or open it using iMovie.  Help!

See this thread, then follow the trail of links I've provided to numerous topics where others are reporting this problem:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4846004?tstart=0
Unfortunately, we don't have a solution as yet, other than following baldric007's advice above regarding using a Time Machine backup (if you have one, or another type of backup).
To summarise for other members here - Projects disappear from iMovie's Project Library, but are still listed in Finder in the Movies/iMovie Projects folder. Double-clicking on the project in Finder opens iMovie, but the project itself doesn't open. Personally, I've also tried to open the project in Final Cut Pro X to no avail (iMovie projects can normally be imported to FCP X). In my case, FCP X quit when I tried to import the project.
As a safeguard (even if you are running a backup), it is advisable to create a duplicate of your current project before closing iMovie and shutting down. There is no guarantee that the duplicate won't also disappear from the Project Library though. To create a duplicate, while in Project Library view (not Edit view), click on the project in the list, then in iMovie's menu select File > Duplicate Project. A copy will be placed in the Project Library with the same name as the original, but with a number appended. You can change the name if desired.
To ensure that Apple is advised of this problem by as many as possible, from iMovie's menu select "iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback" and complete the online form.

  • Help! Following a crash/froze/kernel panic while video editing, I've "lost" an iMovie Project!

I've been using iMovie for a number of years in all its various versions from about iMovie 4 onwards.
For the past year while I've been using iMovie 9, about once a day my iMac has periodically experienced a crash/freeze/kernel panic - ie the screen goes grey - ie "grey screen of death!", (sometimes with horizontal lines on it at intervals) and the GUI becomes totally non-responsive; when this happens I usually have to cycle the power and do a cold restart.  In every instance, my iMovie Project has remained more-or less in tact (perhaps with the most recent change missing, but that's usually easy enough to redo).
Last week, I upgraded iMovie 9 to 11 and I've continued editing for several days and until tonight (fingers crossed) all seemed well - no crashes!
But ealier this evening, while editing, my iMac experienced another crash/froze/kernel panic; on reboot, I discovered that my current Project has disappeared completely from iMovie's Project Library!  Using the Finder I can see that it is STILL there on the HD - I can open the .rcproject package and the Project file is inside!  I tried double-clicking on the Project file and sure enough iMovie 11 launches, but there is no sign at all of my Project in the Project Library.
How can I recover it so that I can continue editing?
VERY fortunately just yesterday I exported the entire Project as a HD Movie to view on my TiVo, so I've been able to re-import that movie back into iMovie, so I've lost very little.  But I have have a number of Projects on the go and I don't want them all to vanish one-by-one!
If THIS is one of the new features of iMovie 11, I want my money back!

After receiving a deafening silence to my original post, I contacted the "geniuses" at Apple.
I'll cut to the chase - they could do nothing for me; apparently my Project is probably corrupt and that's why it no longer works.  They could offer no tools that I could use to check and correct the corrupted Project, just basically said "tough".
Along the way they suggested that I should trash my iMovie preferences which are found as follows...
    Macintosh HD/User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
(Note "User" is whatever you log in as).
Problem was that my iMovie 11 just returned to as it was when it was first installed (without fixing my faulty Project!)  Actually, that was a bit of a problem because I could no longer switch my video to my second monitor because the "Viewer on other Display" was no longer the last item under my iMovie's "Window" menu item.  It took me a little while to discover that I had to check the "Show Advanced Tools" in the "General" Tab of "iMovie Preferences" for that and other features to become available again.
So, I'm sorry, I have nothing to offer you that shows any promise - apart of course from regularly backing up the Project onto another drive (which is what I now do)!

  • Lost iPhoto, iMovie, and Microsoft Office

I recently got my macbook pro fixed because of a system error. When I got it back all the memory was lost, including iPhoto and iMovie which I thought was weird. I tried searching for them on my spotlight but I couldn't find them. Also my microsoft office disappeared. I had Word, Exel and Powerpoint and I can't find them. I tried going on the microsoft site to insert my product key again but it won't let me download it again because I already previously had it. How do I retrieve these things?

So what happened is they reinstall OS X and maybe changed the hard drive.
You can get the iLife apps from the Mac App Store in your Purchases area.
As for MS Office do you have a license key code for it? If you do you can download it from MS and apply that key code to authenticate it. If you do not have the license key code you will need to buy it again. And if you have to buy it again make sure you save the license key code for it so if you ever need to reinstall it you can reuse that key code.

  • I somehow lost my iMovie app when I upgraded to Snow Leopard

I bought my MBP in late 2008. Leopard was installed on it, and it came with iMovie. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I can't seem to find iMovie.
So after spending $26 to upgrade to Snow Leopard, do I have to spend $75 to buy iLife to get iMovie?

use the Installer Disks, your MBP came with, to re-install all apps.

  • Really lost using iMovie since Mav update

Imported four Hi 8 tapes.  Apparently they all went to "updated projects".  can't find them.  Did another two, twice Imovie quit unexpectedly, got an Apple message.  How can I import some Hi8 tapes through my analog digital converter and get the video on dvd for others to use?

Net I selected New event for the import but the Imovie quit unexpectedely when I clicked stop import and went to search for the imported footage.  Suspect a glitch, will reboot and try again with less than my two full hours of tape.
My plan is to edit each of 65 tapes and make composite movies.
Have done this on pc with Roxio early software which was really easy to use.  Imovie seems less than intuitive.
    THanks for yoor reply.

  • How can I retrieve clips lost by iMovie when selecting "force quit"?

While in the process of deleting a single block of frames from my source clip (from the entire 43 min. video) iMovie froze, I had to force quit, and then found iMove had trashed the entire 43 min. clip.  Can this irreplaceable footage be restored?  Will this situation repeat? I'm very concerned about trusting my footage to iMovie at this point.

    Hi Stephen,
Try deleting iMovie's preference file. It's located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences and, for iMovie '09, is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". For iMovie '11 it's named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist".
Close iMovie then drag this file to the Trash, but don't empty Trash just yet. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh .plist file with the default settings, which you can change if desired in iMovie>Preferences in iMovie's menu. If everything now works OK you can empty the Trash.
Deleting the preference file will not harm your Events or Projects but may fix odd behaviour by iMovie. The file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly or is Force Quit (as in your case).
It's not clear from your post whether you were deleting frames from a Project or an Event. If from a project (and the project is no longer visible), the original 43 minute clip may still be in the Event. In Finder, look in your User folder Movies/iMovie Events. Also, check Movies/iMovie Projects. Hopefully, you will find your clip, and possibly your project. If you've stored media on an external drive, the folders will be at the top level of the drive (not in a User/Movies folder).

  • I got os mavericks and i lost my imovie?

Hi, I had downloaded OS Mavericks 10.9.3 and I was about to make myself a movie.... Except that when I looked in my Launchpad and Finder, I couldn't find iMovie! I looked in the App store to find that the new version cost $15. Does anybody know how I can get my old iMovie back (the old imovie that isnt a purple colored star, but brownish/yellow?). I don't wanna take money out of my wallet and I have no idea what has happened to my old one. Two months ago I went to the apple store to get my Mac reset for some alias files couldn't get deleted and I haven't noticed anything missing until today. Thanks.

    Hi
If You look in the folder / Applications (Programs)  / on Your Main Start-Up Hard disk (Macintosh HD)
Isn't there iMovie or a folder named iMovie ?

  • Lost an iMovie Project-how can I find it

My first time using iMovie.  I had completed an iMovie project and it was sitting in Edit Projects.  I chose "Finalize Project" and after that was completed I can't find the project.  I had burned a CD of the movie before it ws finalized-it shows up as iDVD but don't know if I can re-convert that to iMovie.  I ultimately want to save the movie in Dropbox to share.  It's some frustrating.  Hope someone can help-much appreciated.

    Hi great2ode,
My understanding is that when a project is finalized using the menu option "File > Finalize Project", all the exported files are saved in the project file. To access them, in Finder navigate to your User folder Movies/iMovie Projects. Locate your project then right-click (or control-click) on it. From the pop-up menu select Show Package Contents. Inside that folder you will find the exported movies in the Movies folder.
The movies will have a generic name (such as, medium.m4v, large.m4v or 720p.mov and so on). You can copy (or move) the files to another location and rename them if desired. They can also be opened in iDVD from iDVD's Media Browser > Movies panel. The best option is to copy the files, leaving the originals in the package contents folder for possible later use elsewhere (such as in iTunes or uploading to YouTube or Vimeo etc.).
    John
NOTE: After finalizing, or simply exporting from the Share menu item, the iMovie project should still be listed in the Project Library. If it has disappeared from the Library, hopefully it is still in the iMovie Projects folder in the Finder - and all exported files are in place in the project's package contents folder. Finalizing creates a movie in all sizes (resolutions) supported by your project.

  • Video lost in iMovie Event but audio retained after upgrade

As a result of upgrading from iMovie '09 to '11, a video I had as an event now shows only as "green screen" video. Audio is still intact, however. But video is gone - literally just a green screen.
When I go into Finder and view the file, I can see both video and audio in the little preview window. I've tried ripping the video again using Handbrake and re-importing it, but still the same thing: green screen with audio.
    Any suggestions?

Handbrake converts to MPEG formats, which are best avoided in production because of the way the media is encoded. They're great for delivery, which is what Handbrake is designed to do, convert media into delivery formats for iPhones, iPods, AppleTV.
