I'm making the big switch from PC today!

I am going to purchase a Macbook today! The Black configuration. I've always been a PC user and hated it for the most part but I'm also a gamer and that has alwasys been the only thing that put me off Macs since they don't put out as much juice as PC's can hardware wise (mostly video cards). I recently purchased a PS3 so now I have nothing to stop me from buying a brand new Macbook! And I also happen to have a $3600 Dell XPS M1710 laptop for my PC gaming needs, but it's far too big (17") and heavy to lug around.
But I have some concerns. Do any of you know when the next line of Macbooks will be released? Because I don't want to buy a Macbook, only to see it be replaced by a new generation and then regret not getting that. Anyone know when the next line might appear?
Also how do you guys like your Macbooks? Good? Quiet? Reliable? Thx!

No one can accurately predict when Apple will release new hardware. Any timetables that anyone gives you here are simply guesses.
That being said, here's my gut feeling: We won't see new Macbooks until the late summer or mid-fall. They were just updated three weeks ago and they're now on the Intel Penryn processors. Intel is releasing a brand new platform called Montevina this June. I believe Apple will update their MacBook Pros to use this new platform at WWDC '08, which is in late June. The new MBPs will probably ship in July. The MacBooks usually get updated a few months after the MBPs. (In 2007, the Santa Rosa platform was released in May, Apple came out with Santa Rosa MBPs in June, and the MacBooks went to Santa Rosa in November.) The bottom line is this: It's a good time to buy a MacBook.
The MacBooks are good machines. They are very quiet and reliable. Take good care of yours, make sure you shut the lid GENTLY and never carry the laptop in a backpack where textbooks or other weight presses the screen into the body. This can cause the edges of the plastic next to the trackpad to crack.
Enjoy your Macintosh! Welcome to the light!

  • Windows PC User Making The Big Switch To Mac OS X & MacBook 2.0GHz

I'm from the Philippines. I've been a Windows PC user for around 10 years. I figured it's time to replace my old Pentium III 500MHz/Win98SE with a newer system to keep up with highter system requirements set forth by newer applications.
The features I looked for include portability, performance, connectivity (built-in WiFi & Bluetooth) and value (not too expensive). I'm initially leaning towards getting another Windows XP-based platform because Windows-based apps are readily available here and getting tech support for the Mac would be a little prob. Also, I just can't afford to leave behind some applications that are somehoew inexistent in the Mac world, but the mere thought that the PC world would soon be shifting to Vista kinda turned me off. Nobody wants to buy a new notebook that would suddenly become obsolete in just a few months or so.
However, everything changed when online research led me to Apple's homepage (www.apple.com), where I discovered Mac's latest wonder: the Macbook. I heared about the Mac OS X's reputation for stability and performance. They say Macs are less prone to worms & viruses too since most of these things were designed specificically to infect Windows-based platforms. Looks like this is it for me. I'll be getting a MacBook 2.0GHz soon.
I must admit that what primarily attracted me to the Intel-powered Macbook is the fact that it could now run two operating systems thru "Boot Camp" or Parallels For Mac. Two applications that would give me the capability to run Mac OS X and Windows XP on a single platform. It's like having the best of both worlds.
For me, this is really great news but I still have questions though. The Macbook is a new release, so I'm still iffy about purchasing it as new technology is notorious for having many annoying quirks and kinks that need to be smoothed out.
My question is... What are the PROS and CONS of using BootCamp and Parallels respectively? Is Parallels better than the other? Which one would you recommend? Should I decide to install both, will there be any hitches?
I won't be upgrading for the next 5 years or so. The notebook will likely see some heavy use for Medical Transcription work and maybe occasional gaming (mostly flight sims). This would be my first Mac purchase so I better do it right the first time. So if you have any comments, feedbacks, suggestions... kindly post it here.
I'll be making the big switch soon.

I'm running Parallels on an iMac 2.0 GHz, and I absolutely love it! I expected all sorts of glitches and found virtually none. The only drawback I know if is that it treats your USB 2.0 ports like USB 1.1. Otherwise, my Windows XP virtual machine inside of Parallels doesn't seem to know it's not on a PC; it runs smoothly and much faster than on my previous 1.5GHz PC with 1.0 GB RAM. I've loaded Quicken for Windows, MS Office, Norton Anti-Virus, Adobe Acrobat, and several other Windows Apps with no troubles at all. I'm telling you, this software (Parallels) is amazing. I feel like I literally have two computers now.
I would recommend that you have 2.0 GB of RAM, because while you're running Parallels, you have 2 OS's operating at the same time. But the ability to switch back and forth between the two OS's, share files, cut and paste - well, it's simply awesome, and well worth any extra cost.

  • Making the Big "Switch"

I recently ordered an iMac 17-inch Core 2 Duo. I have had a Mac Mini G4 for a while now, but I always synched my iPod with my PC. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on getting my entire iTunes library OR iPod contents (since they have all the same exact stuff) to my new Mac. I have figured a few ways to do it, but they all require a lot of time and frustration. If anyone knows any ways to do this, please post.

Apple doesn't support the transferring of music from your iPod to your iTunes. Only iTunes to iPod. So to do this you will need to download a third party program that will help copy your music from your iPod back to your computer, or there are a couple manual methods you can check out.

With that said, to me personally all the manual methods seem like a huge headache. I had a windows formatted ipod, and used Senuti to switch over to my macbook. Downloaded it from the site, the instructions are step by step and easy, it took all the music off my ipod and into senuti, from there i could import it into my mac library. It was easy, took about an hour, i have 1000+ songs. so depending on how much you have the time would vary. Worked great for me, hope you find something that works for you as well, Good Luck

  • How to go about making the big leap from Photoshop 7.0 (pre-CS version) to CS4 or CS5?

I had bought an iMac way back in 2002 and had pre-installed Photoshop 7.0 on the machine.  At the time, I wasn't much into photography, but am becoming now.  I'm not a pro mind you ... I just like to retouch holiday and family pictures, as well as the local occasional exhibits or events as a hobby.
I'm working fine with version 7.0, but feel that I'm lacking a lot of advantages which are currently present on CS4 & 5, let alone 3, 2, and 1 already.  So, I'm now exploring the move to CS5 or 4 but am lacking knowledge on how best to do this.  Besides, I've learned that there is now Basic & Elements versions too.  I'm all so confused.  Can anyone please guide me on the right move?

First of all, Photoshop 7.x is out of the upgrade loop altogether, so you'll be paying full price for whatever you buy.  Incidentally, make sure you have applied the 7.0.1 update.  Nobody should be running 7.0 at all.
Secondly, you need to specify on what machine you'll be running the new version.
Then tell us whether you shoot RAW images or JPEGs, which in my judgment defines whether you absolutely need CS5.
It may also be that Photoshop Elements may be enough for your needs (note that there is a dedicated Photoshop Elements forum, Elements is not Photoshop).  More info is needed from you.

    Hello Wontsey & Welcome
On 6-4-06 I installed Norton Internet Security 3.0.1 for Mac. I thought maybe my problem was related to the firewall part so I unistalled it and turned the Apple firewall that came with the computer back on.
This did not help. In fact, when I try to open “Help” from the desktop menu the program opens and then immediately closes so I can’t access it.
I hate to have to tell you this Norton is the problem, looking into uninstalling it, the uninstallers that came with it are not effective so no matter you do not have the CD/DVD go to their site to get the Uninstaller
UseCocktail or OnyXto find the invisable files. Just follow Macjacks directive.
This is covered in this Topic thread, abandoning Norton Internet Security see the files Macjack speaks of in the topic thread. This is why i first came to Apple discussions, to get help with the mess Norton can make on Panther and found help as you will. It is not a Safari issue per say, rather a Norton problem.

  • What happened to the MMS topic from earlier today?

Isn't this a public forum for people to discuss stuff? The topic from earlier today is gone. Why did it get deleted? I think it's important for everyone to understand the importance of such basic cell phone functions...it might actually sway someone's purchase as they would just assume a phone of such perceived caliber would have such basic cell phone functions when in fact it lacks a lot of basic cell phone functions. I'm just assuming this will get deleted as well, because god forgive we actually discuss stuff that matters to consumers.

I had a post deleted yesterday. It wasnt offensive or anything. It went like this...
The discussion was about MMS, and a poster said.... "Why would you want to send MMS at a cost of $0.50 when you can just email?".
To which i replied... "So i guess you never send texts then? why would you want to send texts at 0.15p, when you can just email? the answer is convenience".
When i looked later the same day, my post had been deleted!!

  • Switched from IE8 today and can no longer print Fed Ex shipping labels. Fed Ex help desk says its a Firefox problem and they are unaware of a fix.

We used IE 8 at work, with a Vista 32bit O/S. We switched to Firefox today, and can no longer print using our Fed Ex shipping printer, through FedEx.com. If we switch back to IE8, we can print labels.

Does the label appear in File > Print Preview, and it just won't print? <br />
Do you have the correct size "paper" selected thru Properties for that printer when viewed thru Firefox? <br />
See if anything here helps: <br />
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problems_printing_web_pages
If that doesn't help you, I don't know what else to recommend. Without being able to login to FedEx and without access to their printer, there isn't anything I can do to see what the problem with Firefox and their printer might be.
IMO, FedEX should either tell you that their printer software is made to work to IE only or not. Considering that they are a worldwide company and that Firefox has like a 30% worldwide market share, they might be disappointing like 30% of their customers with vague help responses like that. Plus, IE is for Windows OS's, what are their customers running Mac OSX or Linux supposed to do if it doesn't work in Firefox?

  • The Big Switch!

Switching over to leopard today, bit nervous to be honest. Just Thinking about my 1000's of bookmarks. Anyway simple way of saving these? Cheers.

    Hi-
    Use Migration Assistant.
That is, you will need to maintain a current system on an internal, or external firewire, drive, that the Migration Assistant can pull the info from.
So, if you plan on installing Leopard over your current system, you'll be out of luck, unless you use the "Upgrade" install path, which isn't really recommended.

  • About to make the big move from OS 9.2 to 10.4.8-Am I ready?

Hi everyone, First, Happy New Year. Second, may I ask for your comments?
    I have a PPC AGP 450 Mhz G4 with a 50 GB drive running MAC OS 9.2.2
In preparation for the move to OS 10.4.8 I had a new 80 GB hard drive installed. My Apple techie told me to just drag over the original drive icon to the new one and that this would make a bootable copy of my frive's contents including a bootable system. I did so, then changed boot drives to the new one and it now boots up fine ( a little slower if anything.) I purchased the OS 10.4 DVD ( yes, its the single black one - not a gray one.) The questions?; do I install OS 10 onto this new second drive on onto the original drive? Do I do a clean erase and install or an archive and install? If I erase and install the original drive, will I need to reenter all the information for TCP/IP, internet access, etc. again?
Sorry to be so paranoid. This forum is full of the skeletons of those who have gone before me and I do not relish the thought of having to come here desperately looking for help because I totally screwed the pooch. What do you think guys and gals? I'm only a click away from 10.4
(PS-I did upgrade the firmware and verified this with the system profiler.)

The OP's plan is sound. Install OS X on the larger HD. Then, create a root-level folder, named something like OS9Stuff, and drag the entire OS 9 stuff on the other HD into it. Then, erase an reformat the HD into at least two partitions. One for OS X and one for OS 9 (size it to about 150% of what the OS 9 currently takes up), Clone your updated and running OS X installation to the OS X partiton, giving you a backup. Drag & drop the contents of OS9Stuff to the OS 9 partiton. Move the contents of OS9Stuff to the root-level. That gives you two bootable OS 9 volumes/partitons.
One final point, I've found that 512 MB of RAM is a good starting point for 10.4, especially on an older Mac. OS X is really made for newer machines than yours and requires plenty of RAM no matter how new the machine. It will likely be slower, but much more stable.
OS X runs well on my seven-year old G4, 450 MP, w/1.5 GB RAM. Push your RAM to the max. I've examined the new machines at the Apple Store and haven't noticed OS X being all that faster, but that might just be how I run the machine.

Can your source do True DD or DTS output. If so check your SPDIF input settings try setting it to Dolbydigital/DTS SPDIF-Inpute Decode.
Try it with your DD/DTS driver decode on or off.
If that doesn't work try setting your SPDIF input settings to SPDIF bypass with you DD/DTS driver Decode on.
Lastly if you have an external decoder built into your speakers have your DD/DTS?decode off (Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream out) and your SPDIF input setting set to SPDIF bypass.
Check your devices settings try difrent settings like PCM out or AC3 digital out.

  • Any suggestions on making the documents 'PDFd' from Outlook smaller?

I am using Outlook 2013, and Adobe Acrobat XI Standard.
When I click on a message, and then right click and select "Convert to Adobe PDF", it creates a document that is roughly 500KB.
Comparatively, if I save the email message to a file, it is about 50KB.
If I print the message, to and Adobe PDF document, it comes in at about 160KB.
I see that the aim of these commands appears to be for archiving purposes, to move your emails into a format or location that can better manage records.  However, having a 10x increase in the space makes it very unappealing.
Is there a way to adjust these settings, to make the files smaller perhaps?
What options are there, that perhaps I am not aware of?
    Thanks

    Hi Bill Tkach,
Thank You for posting on the forums. There are few things that Acrobat does while the e-mail is being converted to PDF depending on the settings chosen.
    1) Embeds index for faster search
2)Creates a portfolio of the message
    3) Adds security to the file
Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps.
    1) select the message you want to convert to PDF
    2) Click on the Acrobat botton
    3)Click on change conversion settings
    4) Uncheck the options that are not useful to you
    5) proceed with the conversion.

  • Switching from a PC to MBA

So, I'd been planning on making the big switch for a few months now, but kept putting it off. Then the universe stepped in, gave some dirty thief my precious laptop, and informed me that it was time to move on. Hey, when the universe says it's time to go, maybe it's time to go. The only problem I've been having is deciding between an MBA and an MBP.
I used my previous laptop for writing and photo editing mostly, with the occasional game on the side. I write all the time, and I do mean all the time. I regularly participate in NaNoWriMo, and besides that I am on a few long term writing communities. So, a novel or two, as well as a couple hundred short stories, are probably what's going to end up being stored most of the time. (Yes, they do get backed up, but aside from short stories that are months old and haven't been looked at, I like to keep most of it on the laptop, where I can get to it instantly.) Then add in my photo editing. I create novel covers and photo manips a lot, so photoshop is almost always running. When I boot up my laptop, MS Word and Photoshop are the two that are instantly on as well. The games I had on my laptop were Oblivion and Dragon Age. Now, I've also recently gotten an XBOX 360, so most of my games are on there now, and the computer games would probably be Sid Meir's Priates and The Sims.
So, my question is, will an MBA be able to handle a fair amount of word documents and picture files, and an occasional game?
I intend to get the 13" with these specs:
    1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    256GB flash storage

See the following: (I do not know if this stands for student/teacher licenses, though it should)

  • Switching from a PC / Educational offer

I'm a PC user, about to make the big switch (I think). Everyone I know is warning me against it, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Mac. Just a few concerns:
    1. Everyone keeps telling me that there are heaps of applications that don't work on a Mac. I don't care about software for gaming and design and all that. I just need the basics (word processing, internet, whatever stuff I'll need for school) and I've checked that all the applications that I'll need (that I can think of) are available on Macs, but I'm afraid that I've missed some out. So, I just wanted to know if any of you Mac users have run into the problem of not being able to use a certain software. (Apart from gaming/specialist software).
    2. The main reason I want a Mac is because I've heard/read so much about its stability etc. Is the Mac really as stable/virus-free etc as it's made out to be? (I'll admit, looking around this discussion are makes me a little worried, even if its only a small percentage of Mac users experiencing problems) My parents are very very against me getting a Mac ("Why don't you just stick with something familiar?") so if I get one and it screws me over, I will never ever hear the end of it from my parents, heh.
    3. Are there things a PC can do that a Mac can't? Like I said, I'll be starting uni, and I just need a notebook for work/research/papers/mail and all that. Nothing fancy, just enough for essays and the internet and the odd project/presentation and such.
    4. One of my friends (new Mac-user) warned me that certain websites either turn out wonky or are entirely inaccessible on a Mac. Have any of you run into this problem? And if you have, does it happen frequently?
Eek. Sorry this is so long. I am just a little anxious about making the switch. Any help would be much appreciated
Also, I'm looking at the educational offer (free iPod with the iBook/Powerbook etc until the 24th of September). The only thing is, I just read the terms and conditions and they say this:
"You must order and take possession of qualifying products from June 28th, 2005 through September 24th, 2005". Does this mean that I must have received my iBook before the 24th? Because, all along, I assumed I had until the 24th to make my order. iBooks take around two weeks to be delivered, right?

You'll be surprised how much great software comes bundled with an iBook. Kicks the pants out of the equivalent pc bundled software. Even some of the pro apps that you can get for pc's can't hold a candle to the mac bundled software. I've never had any problem getting a hold of software to do what I've needed.
    2. The main reason I want a Mac is because I've heard/read so much about its stability etc. Is the Mac really as stable/virus-free etc as it's made out to be? Absolutely stable. No blue screen of death. I've had apps crash but never has it ever crashed my ibook. The os keeps ticking. When you get yours let your parents use it. I'm sure they'll have one in no time. The reality is it's a computer but it does the job much better than a pc.

None that I'm aware of. In fact it would probably be the opposite. Things like expose, dashboard, quartz extreme, true plug and play (no drivers required inmost cases). For the purposes you listed above you will be in computing heaven.
One of my friends (new Mac-user) warned me that certain websites either turn out wonky or are entirely inaccessible on a Mac. Have any of you run into this problem? And if you have, does it happen frequently?
Occasionally Safari has problems opening certain web pages but Apple has been doing a good job of keeping on top of that. Internet explorer is availble in a Mac version if you want to go that route. Curious about your friend has he/she updated to the most current version of Safari. I've yet to encounter a page that I've had problems with.
Eek. Sorry this is so long. I am just a little anxious about making the switch. Any help would be much appreciated
Go get one and ease you anxiety!
