I'm manually migrating from 10.4 to 10.6 and I have a few synch questions

hello,
I have a more or less corrupt installation of 10.4 (you know, boot issues, permissions going whack every now and then, lots of procrastinating about it) that I'm finally going to wipe completely clean so I can start over with 10.6. but since I am not making a simple upgrade and since I can't just use time machine and have to back everything up manually onto an external firewire drive, I have a few questions. I would be extremely glad if you could give me a few hints, pointers, ideas.
iphone
I have a 3gs and I don't want to lose all my data on it. I don't want to (a) not be able to access my songs after installing the new os and (b) I don't want it to wipe the phone when I connect it. I heard my phone will be authorized without any problems once I enter my itunes store email/password but I wanted to check with you guys since I can't check myself. is this correct?
itunes
I'd love for my library and playlists to show up just as they are right now. is there a way to achieve this or do I need to import it all anew and create new playlists?
stickies
last time I migrated the stickies file I copied from and pasted into the applications folder didn't work. bummer. so I exported stickies once and only realized every export I did only copied one stickie and not all of them. there must be a shortcut, right?
safari
I currently use pithhelmet to block banners in safari3 but it seems simbl isn't working in safari4 yet, so I need to find an alternative. any recommendations? you know, for aggressive banner blockers that actually work?
that's a lot and I thank you for even reading this far. anyone trying to help me out here please allow me to thank you already. I'm just way nervous I'm gonna miss something, thus all the questions.

I would move to Sno only if proper precautions are taken. More specifically, as suggested by V.K., I wouldn't do it unless I first made a bootable clone of my internal volume on and external drive partition. Your clone would be your backup, minor migration medium, and fail-safe device.
From what you have said, I definitely would do an erase and install. But, note also that, after an erase and install of Sno, the more you recover from your clone the more likely you are to bring problems with your Tiger install to your Sno install.
So, I would drag and drop my files from Tiger to Sno using [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507]. Before doing so, I would acquire [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] and use this app to fix your user preferences--the items in your User/Library/Preferences folder(s). And, I would not migrate my users, settings, or apps.
Check the Sno [compatibility of all your software and hardware here|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/forum:start]. By checking you will know where software and hardware hot spots are likely to be before doing your erase and install.

The guide I linked will help you with iTunes. I am not positive if everything >will be as it is now.

I am unaware of a replacement for pithhelmet. But, there should be a Sno compatible beta or release pretty soon I believe. Here is a quote from the pithhelmet website.
"A very early beta release for PithHelmet 3.0 is now available. You must have already installed SIMBL-0.9.x. I tried to build a .mpkg metapackage, but apparently that doesn't work at all under Snow Leopard. I wasted nearly 6 hours trying to figure it out (thanks Apple) but to no avail. "

How can I take the files that were migrated from my PC to my Mac and add all those files to my current user instead of having 2 users? Having to log out just to sign in on a different user to access the files is absurd.
Do I make all the files sharable to all the NOW users on the mac then just delete the files? Or can i erase my account that I made when starting up my new mac and then just use the one with the transferred files?
I just dont want to have to og in and out of 2 different accounts .. Help please.

Sorry. /Users is a folder path. It would be similar to C:\Users (if that exists on Windows).
So, in the Finder, select Computer from the Go menu.
You'll see Macintosh HD, double-click that to open it.
In there you'll see several folders. One is Users. That is where all the user Home folders exist. Select the other account's home folder and go to step 3.
If you have any more confusion, please stop and ask. We'll get there.
If you feel more comfortable, you can just log into that other account and move the files into /Users/Shared.
Then, log into the account you wish to use and copy the files from the Shared folder and paste them into your Home folder, wherever they belong, Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.  That just takes a little more work. Transferring them into Shared, and then copying into your home sets the permissions on the files so that you won't have a problem accessing them later. The steps I provided just prevent you from having to do the double move, since you are not going to use the old account once you are done.
Quick unix shorthand. If someone gives you a file path that begins with a /, that means the root of the hard drive, ie Macintosh HD (if you haven't renamed it). The path separator in unix is /, not \.
A path that starts with ~/ means your Home folder, the one inside /Users named with your account name.

can I interrupt a migration from Mac Book Pro to iMac and what are the consequences

    Les:
    Here are some options:
    • You could copy the data file to your laptop, work on it, and update the file on the iMac when you are back.
    • You can use an application like Log Me In to access your home computer from your laptop.
    • You can use DropBox. Install it on both computers, place your data file in a folder on the iMac, access it and work on it on your laptop and it will be automatically updated on your computer at home, even if it is not turned on, as soon as it is connected to the internet.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

Since migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and upgrading to iTunes 11, the latter has frozen while syncing my devices, usually while at the “determining apps to sync” stage of the process.  If I am attempting to download app updates before attempting to sync, the problem normally occurs at the first “installing app x” stage.  In addition, the whole iTunes experience is extremely sluggish and will even freeze while searching for a track.  Everything worked fine on Windows 7.  So far, I have repaired the program several times and have checked for compatibility issues, but there is no Windows 8 option in the combo box, obtained after right-clicking the icon and selecting Properties/Compatibility.  As a result, I am unable to sync my devices. If I uninstall iTunes before re-installing, will this affect my iTunes libraries?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

After going by elimination to isolate if the problem was from (1) iTunes app, (2) my computer or (3) my old iPhone 4G, I figured out what my problem was.
    1) First I deleted & reinstalled iTunes on my Windows PC without succes, my playlist did not changed on my iPhone.
    2) I tested a successful #sync from the iMac at work.
So my conclusion is: The hard drive on my Windows PC is full and that is affecting iTunes SYNC functionalities.
So I'll do a back-up then run a "Clean Install" of my Windows OS, hoping that it will fix my SYNC problems.

    Good luck Friend.
That's not going to help.  That article is for moving photos from iOS device to computer, not for removing them.  Additionally, photos synced via iTunes cannot be manually removed from the device.  You have to use iTunes to 'unsync' them, as FoxFifth stated.
Camera Roll pictures are the only ones that can be imported from device to computer.  Album folders cannot be moved from device to computer.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • If I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and I have a time machine backup, can I do a full restore back to 10.6.8 and resume as if I had never updated?

If I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and I have a time machine backup, can I do a full restore back to 10.6.8 and resume as if I had never updated if there is a problem?  Probably an answer I should know but I don't.  Thanks in advance!  (instruction suggestions welcomed)

Upgrading the OS is a system wide thing. So all users will receive the upgrade.
It should not delete files and such. However, if you have for example files made with Pages '09. Then the new Pages that comes with Mavericks will make a copy of those files so you can continue to edit them. But those new files can not be opened in Pages '09. BUT again, some people perfer Pages '09 and they use that still. Mavericks will just hide Pages '09, it's still usable in Mavericks just hidden.
To be safe, make a back up of your system before doing any major upgrade.

My iphone 4s wont slide from one screen to the next and I have to double tap on each icon to open it. I can hear siri talking and telling me what each icon or button I press is. How do I fix this problem? I have restored my phone to last saved but the problem still remains.

My problem was fixed via your suggestion. Thanks. Then I heard, though it hasn't been substantiated by anyone I know, that pushing the the round "start" button after the unit is on three rapid times will solve the problem. Do you know if this is valid info?
