If you are using swing (which is not supported in the browsers' default VM), you can enable your browser to use the plugin jre by converting your html page with the html converter. You can download this from http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html
Also be aware that your browser might have cached older versions of your .class files. You might need to delete them first.
I recommend using the appletviewer to test your applet first. Open a command line and run:
appletviewer your_page.html

  • I am new to the Mac and have a stupid Question

So I am not really this stupid but would love it if someone could tell me how to remove a program.
I downloaded some driver software in order to set me up onto the network printer at work. Along with that software came some sort of device locator for which I have no need nor patience. The file name is "com.brother.ControlCenter.plist" and the program name is "Brother Control Center Ver. 2.4.3"
I have deleted the file from the program list, I have changed the preferences of the program to try and disable it from launching at start up. I have drug it into the trash on the desk top and emptied the trash immediately after and through all of this my nemesis continues to launch at start up and then prompt me for a device choice.
Please tell me how to completely remove this program file.
    Thanks

Is Photoshop Elements the same as Photoshop? I am brand new and have no idea if they are the same or different or what!

Photoshop Elements is a subset of the features found in full Photoshop, and with an organizing component that isn't part of the big program (which includes a deluxe file browser, Bridge, rather than the Organizer found in Elements). More info here:

  • New to IPhone and have a few Questions?

To start I want to say that I am a long time (25+ years) veteran of technology but am new the the IPhone. My IPhone is not Jailbroken and would like to keep it that way if I can. Allthgouh I did jailbrake it with blackra1n for about 30mins then I did a factory reload and let it be as it started acting stupid once I started installing apps from unofficial sources.;) Im a x86 nerd and NOT a MAC guy. I haven't sat down at a MAC/Apple in about 15/20 years.
I just got my first IPhone 3Gs/16GB. (Coming from a BlackBerry Curve 8310) the other day and although it is taking some time getting used to, I think I will like it more then I do once I get used to it.
Anyhow I have a few questions to start off with. I did some googleing already but just want to make sure I understand a few things.
All though I did the BlackRa1n jail break thing and installed a few apps then it locked up and failed to turn on or something so I did the whole reload from itunes and now its all good. Anyhow.....
1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Take the many SIP Clients I have played with in the last 48 hours. Once I open the SIP Client and connect if I hit the physical button below the screen the program closes, thus the sip client no longer works. Pretty much most if not all apps iv installed from the App Store act like this. Is this the case? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only. The SIP Clients work fine when on WIFI. It sounds like this is Apples way of controlling/monopolizing the voice/data/voip aspect of the platform/device. Im sure they would lose a lot of money if everyone did what I am trying to do.Just my opinion.
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
Sorry for all this just thought I would ask for feedback.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide,

1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
The iPhone SDK does not permit ANY 3rd party apps from running in the background or multitasking. It does provide for push notifications which can simulate certain background activity in terms of receiving external notifications while the app is actually closed. This works reasonably well with IM apps, news, sports, weather, travel updates and some peer-to-peer games.
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only.
Just how would the SIP server connect to the cell carrier 3G network? Do you know of ANY that do??
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
3G voice and data connections are culprits. Avoid email push and frequent fetching. See this Apple article for detailed suggestions.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
MobileMe Find My iPhone will locate, set a passcode lock and optionally wipe all data from your iPhone. You have to be a MobileMe subscriber.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
No. Apple does not permit this.
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
You can troubleshoot your iPhone as described in the User Guide - restart, reset, reset settings, restore. Or, get hearing aids

  • Totally new to external hard drives and have a few questions

Since beginning my search for an external hard drive this morning I have learned that I know very little about this subject. I really have very little knowledge of all the computer lingo used when looking at these devices. I have a few questions regarding this, if someone could help me.
    1. Are all external hard drives compatible with my mac?
    2. Do I need time machine if I have an external hard drive?
    3. I have two PCs in addition to my mac. Can I use the same external hard drive for all three or would I need a separate one?
    Thanks for helping!

Use a Firewire not a USB drive.
I have had many reliability issues, and compatibility issues with USB over the years (starting with the original iMac), right up to the PowerMac G5 and Mac Pro - devices not working properly with hubs, needing to be plugged directly into ports on the computer (even though there aren't enough), etc, etc.
For me Firewire devices cause fewer of these sorts of problems.
Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.

  • I am upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.5 and have a few questions

I have a 17in iMac G5 1.6ghz currently running on 10.3.9, I have previously asked about how far I can upgrade the OS, and discovered it's to 10.5.
I have currently got 1x 1gb RAM memory and will be purchasing another chip to mirror this one.
I have tracked down a retail version of Tiger on amazon
I need an external hard drive to back up onto and have limited cash. I found the Western Digital 1tb My Book in the apple store for £89, which seems reasonable and my current tiny (and full) hardrive (which was a similar price when I bought it!) is the same make and has worked really well for me so far. My question is whether it will work with my computer in it's current state as it's system requirements say OS 10.4-10.6. Can anybody help me with this?
I know my actual question doesn't relate to installation but I couldn't think where else to post this.

Unanswer your question smallbean to attract some responses.
My contribution: ask the store that is selling the external whether it would suit your G5 Mac.

  • New to Editing and Have Some Important Questions

    Greetings All,
I would consider myself a new editor - only because I feel I have so much to learn. Currently I edit for a local television show that broadcast on a cable network - I have been using makeshift solutions to get the job done - but would like to move into being a total professional.
Currently I have - Final Cut Studio 2 (will be upgrading to the new release in approx. 2 weeks) - 8 Core Mac Pro (upgraded video card & and extra ram)
    - 23 inch Display (will purchase an additional 30" HD Display in approx. 2 weeks) -Mac Book Pro
    -Adobe After Effects
I know that I need some sort of deck that can be used to put the tapes in and log and capture into final cut pro - (currently I rec. the footage on dvd and use MPEG to import the footage into Final Cut) - any recommendations on the type of deck I should get - something affordable that is universal that can be used with many types of tapes. Also I have been told that I may need a broadcast monitor - I've also been told that if I get the 30" HD display that I won't need a broadcast monitor- thoughts on this please? As a side not I have a 32 inch 720p flat screen Samsung television could this be used as a monitor? I've heard some discussion about Konika video capture card - after researching I'm still not sure I understand exactly what it's purpose is? Please help - is this something that I will need? What am I missing in my workflow? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated - thanks

only because I feel I have so much to learn<</div>
Including where to post. This here's the LiveType forum.
You don't need one deck, you need a deck specific to every kind of tape you have to use. You probably only need a DVCAM deck. If you need Beta you already know that. If you don't know that, you need to start with a basic video production class at a college or high school. That's not a service we provide here in these forums.
The 30" Apple Cinema is way more screen than you need for FCP. Save your money and just get another 23".
Konica does not make capture cards. You may be thinking of Kona, easily researched.
You may or may not need a broadcast monitor. What you need is the firm knowledge and experience to make that decision on your own.
My suggestion is to look up a video expert in your market area and prepare your management to pay them for their expertise as a consultant. Your post indicates you have way too much to learn. You can do it in books and in many hours of online research but you're going to spend more time and money doing that than you would simply by hiring someone to do the easy parts for you.

  • New to camera raw and have a basic question

    Hello,
I have just started playing with camera raw and when I make changes, and say done, I am able to open that image up and continue with the corrections, which is great.
    but.....
If I open up an image that has been edited in camera raw, and I want to get back to the original and start again, how would I do that?
    thanks
    'babs

I don't know if you made a small typo, but you don't want to "Reset Camera Raw Defaults" - that affects all future file opens (assuming you have saved custom defaults for your camera in the past).
You just want to check the entry Camera Raw Defaults up near the top to affect the selected image(s) alone.

  • Just got a Macbook and have a few questions

Ok, so I just got my Macbook laptop today and because I have never owned a Mac product i just had a few questions
First off, is it safe to be plugged into the internet right off the bat or do I need to go out and buy some antivirus software? i have heard from some people that macs have built in antivirus and that they are also just in general less likely to get a virus then your average pc.
also just wondering, when i play a cd the disk reader/laser? whatever you would want to call it makes alot more noise then i expected it to. i didnt know if that was normal or not, and just wanted some opinions from other macbook users. thanks!!

On these forums, just about anyone you ask will say that there is no reason to get antivirus software. Most mac users don't have any installed. It's not viruses on the mac you really need to be worried about; it's stupid stuff like phishing or scams - things that don't have anything to do with the operating system - that you just have to watch out for. You'll be fine without antivirus software. The thing I really liked about my mac (windows user all my life; switched 6 months ago, haven't regretted it) is that instead of worrying about viruses and keeping my anti-virus/spyware software always up to date, I was just able to start using my mac, right out of the box.
They do make antivirus software for macs. If you really are that worried about it, go to:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The ironic thing is that it checks for windows viruses (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so you don't pass them on. A windows virus won't have any effect on your mac.
Surf the net. Be productive. Stop worrying. Have fun. Welcome to Apple.
    ...not a bad little slogan
EDIT - wow, a million people posted while I was writing this reply. meh.

  • Just installed 10.4 and have some installation questions

I just installed 10.4 and immediately updated it to 10.4.11. Unfortunately, when I installed 10.4, I had to do it as an Erase and Install, because of some issues that were keeping me from being able to Archive and Install. Anyway, I'm in the process of reinstalling all my software. I'll also need to re-create the Classic environment; I've never done this before, because when I first got this G4 it already had both OS 9 & 10 on it. I'd sure appreciate any tips anybody can give me as to what steps to go through to make the process as smooth as possible, and what else, if anything, besides running Repair Permissions I should do before/after/between installations. Any information that anyone can provide will be gratefully appreciated!

    Hi-
You can install OS 9 after OS X has been installed, though the method varies depending on the OS 9 version that you have. If you have a retail version of OS 9:
-Start up from the CD, and open the Installer.
-Click the Options button in the Installer to access the clean installation option.
-Select the checkbox for clean installation.
    -Install the software.
If your computer came with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.2 or 10.3, and a non-bootable Software Restore CD which includes Mac OS 9.2.2, do this:
-Open Software Restore, and select to restore only Mac OS 9.
-Open Classic preferences and verify that System Folder (the one that was just installed) is selected for the Classic environment.
More information is available in this document.
As everything is "new", you shouldn't need to worry about permissions.

  • Wallstreet PDQ running OS 10.3.9 and have an odd question

I have been running 10.2 for a very long time. I was just given a copy of 10.3 and decided to get it running (and I was excited about dual booting and being able to play some of my favorite old games again). Well any of you familiar with the Wallstreet and OS 10.2 know that it has an odd glitch with video. If it goes to sleep...the backlight remains off and you have to reboot to get it to work again. So, it has been a very long time since I have let my book go to sleep (and it is a pain).
Well, with the new OS sets installed, I was excited about this possibility...just close the lid and open again when I am ready to use. Well, I tried it and it froze. Both in OS 9 and in OS X. I can see the screen (the back light works)...but nothing will move. I have even let it sit like this till it went to sleep again. Nothing.
I did have to replace a hinge not long ago. During the process, there was a small ribbon that tore. It appeared to be connected to the microphone...since I don't use it...I left it alone. I have been told this connects to the "sleep board".
So, if I replace this torn ribbon, will it wake normally? OR is there a known issue with Wallstreet and OS X 10.3 and XpostFacto???
    Thanks
    Thoma

    Thoma,
There is a known workaround for the dark backlight in OSX when waking and for some even when booting. Just boot to 9.x or any supported Classic OS from the HD or CD, then restart to OSX. Somehow OSX changes a setting which causes this issue; resetting PRAM or power manager is no help but the boot to Classic corrects the issue. As long as the Wallstreet does not lose power, this fix will stick.
The sleep switch is located on the right side of the 'book in the body along the frame rail next to the 'delete' key. You can stick a paperclip about 4 inches from the bottom of the right, vertical display frame and locate the magnet. I have not looked at the wiring diagrams of the Wallstreet for a long time so I can't say yet what wires are involved. However, if this freeze started when you installed 10.3, odds are it is a software issue, especially since the 'book will go to sleep properly but freezes when wakened.
Unfortunately I only have 9.x on my Wallstreet now, but I have run 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, and I do not recall a sleep issue.
The first step I would take is to reset the power manager since this will often correct sleep issue.
If no help, disconnect all peripherals (USB, FireWire, CardBus slot) and test sleep.
Are you using the XPostFacto control panel to switch startup volumes? I found that using the control panels in 9.x and 10.x when running XPostFacto would cause a freeze.

  • Overwhelmed... Just received my Y2P and have a few questions

Right out of the box and when I first turned it on, I had to provide them with my microsoft account in  order to complete the initial boot. WHY?!?!? Is there a way to avoid this?
Chrome - the tabs and address bar are TINY, how do I change it?
Each window opened on Chrome opens up at a 100% resolution but my goodness, font is so small. I have to increase the resolution to 200%
What happened to the taskbar on the desktop to switch between tabs and windows?!
I realize there is some sort of taskbarish thing on the left side but it's not the same. I have been having difficulties with that "taskbar" to respond at the first swipe with the pointer. Closing/signing-off apps is a new adventure as there are no Xs on the upper right hand corner. UGH!
Switching to the desktop is no easy feat. Don't know where to find the Control Panel.
I feel this laptop has a huge learning curve and I feel overwhelmed. HELP!!!
With the issues reported and the learning curve involed, I feel I should just move to the macbook air.... sigh!

    TxLittleAngel wrote:

It's evil. You have to click the "Create a new account" link and then at the bottom of the form for creating an MSN account is a little link that says "Sign in without a Microsoft account" and that will then let you create a basic local account with a username and password and no Microsoft MSN online rubbish.
The "tiny fonts and stuff" issue has been much discussed here. You can change the Windows display scaling to make everything bigger (though some applicaitons still have issues with this) or you can run the display at a lower resolution so that everything is naturally bigger. There are a number of threads on this topic.
Everything else is just standard "Windows 8 is evil how do I get it to behave like old windows??" complaints that everyone has  Apparently it IS possible to eventually get used to the Win 8 way of things but boy, is it frustrating at the start. One tip is that from the start screen you can just start typing and it will bring up the apps page and search box and most of everything is still there that you're familliar with (control panel etc.) you just have to search to find it.
There are inexpensive 3rd party utilities (from Stardock etc.) that give you back an old style Start button menu, and in 8.1 you can configure it to boot to the desktop instad of the Metro UI if you choose.

  • I am new and have two things to submit. First, I finally have my first Apple device in the new iPad. I love the UI, the Cloud and the stability. I will never own an Android Tablet another Android phone for that matter.

Now that I am already long-winded, I wanted to post a review of the new Otterbox Defender. I bought it yesterday and was skeptical at first with the price and the bulk of the unit.  I have three young children at home and need the utmost protection for my expensive device.  The Defender has a nice foam backing that the website relieves my OCD by mentioning it will protect back of the iPad from scratches.  Phew!  The polycarbonate shell is also sturdy and can take a pounding, not to mention the built-in screen protector.  The cover for the front also supports the sleep/wake feature of the new device as well and will provide enough protection for even the craziest three year old.  To top it all off it comes with a silicone sleeve that wraps around the shell to add further protection and a nice grip.  I highly recommend this to anyone with young children, OCD or for those affraid to play with the iPad and don't want to scratch it.

Anyone contemplating the Otterbox Defender for their new iPad should be aware that the polymer used to create the screen protector degrades the quality of the display. If you are doing work that needs or could use the high quality of the new iPad display it might behoove you to look further. It is fine for non-critical use, however.
A second problem, at least with the first run of Defenders is that the auto-lock feature may or may not work.  It seem that the new iPad requires that not only the alignment of the magnets be proper the polarity of the magnets must be proper too.  The Defender uses two magnets one of which will be over the sensor regardless of which way the cover is placed.  However the manufacturers apparently did not know of the polarity requirement so it is left to chance as to whether or not the auto-lock feature works.  On my Defender it works with the cover in one orientation but not the other.
Except for these two problems the case is excellent.  These two problems aren't present when the case is used on the iPad 2.

  • Building my first Site, and have a few questions...

    Hi people.
Despite being a Designer (albeit a non-practicing one at the moment!), I've never done website design before. So, I'm having a go with iWeb to learn some basics, in the hope that my knowledge will improve as time goes on! In the meantime however, I have some questions, which I think I know the answers to, but will ask anyway!
    1) When I add an album, I notice you can choose to have a border round the picture. I know this can be changed for different styles, or even nothing at all. However, I like having a little border round the image-but the one I have comes up white. Is there anyway i can change the border colour?
    2) I want a page with a few links on, but I don't want to have them listed as URL's. Can I make buttons for them? For example, if I wanted to link to the Apple Store, the idea would be to have some sort of button with the Apple Logo in which when clicked takes you to the site. Can this be done in iWeb or should I be looking at more advanced web building programs?
    3) I'm going to have a page with some music interests on-can i make a link for an artist or that particular track that will take you directly to that artist/track in iTunes? Like you click it, it opens iTunes and directs you to that page?
    Any help appreciated!
    Dan

    Dan the 480 Man wrote:
    Or does iWeb re-size them?
Dan ~ In iWeb click on the iWeb menu and choose Preferences... You'll see a check-box for +"Optimize images on import"+. In iWeb's Help viewer it says:
Reducing a photo’s file size: Resampling (or downsampling) is a method of reducing a photo’s file size. Downsampling helps your website publish faster and helps photos display and download faster for your visitors.
Photos you add to a Photos template are imported full size and downsampled automatically when you publish.
For very large, high-quality RAW and JPG images, you can choose iWeb > Preferences and select “Optimize images on import.” This setting reduces the size of imported images by up to 60 percent so they don’t take up as much space in your Domain file.
