I'm new to Lightroom. Struggling with downloading from iPhoto to Lightroom. Pls help??

I have installed Lightroom@ on my mac. Trying to import photos which are saved in iPhoto. Have found your link which says I need to create a master copy and copy to my desktop, which I'm in the process of doing, but: (1) it says it will take 11 hours! (2) do I have to do this every time I want to access recently added photos to iPhoto?? Basically, I'm trying to find the quickest and most efficient way to transfer my photos from iPhoto to lightroom. Pls advise. Thanks. Heidi

No, you do this one time only
By the way, if you're going to use Lightroom, you wouldn't add new photos to iPhoto, you import them into Lightroom.

When I try to order a printed book, I can not get any further than to "check out". Then I get "oops the store is temporarily unavailable". It has been like this for the past two days.

Also what print product store are you trying to order from? Give this fix posted by another user a try:
Quit iPhoto.
From the Finder menu bar, choose Go > Utilities to access your Utilities folder (or press Shift-Command-U).
In your Utilities folder, open Keychain Access.
Find the "NetServices" entry in your Keychain Access window.
Select the "NetServices" entry and press the delete key.
Reopen iPhoto and attempt to place your order again.
You should be prompted to enter your account information if you deleted the Keychain entry successfully.
After entering your account information, you should be able to complete your order.

Thats the ugliest code I've seen in a while and may be hampering your abilities to debug it. No offense - you have to start somewhere - think of it as somewhat constructive criticism.
However, I cannot find any place where this is happening. Its happening on line 193.
Also, this only happens when you try to move certain pieces to certain squaresThat might be a clue. Try printing out the indexes before line 193 and see what happens. Maybe use a debugger to step through your code.

Okay. I've got all my photos organised in iPhoto, but I've seen the writing on the wall about Apple discontinuing iPhoto.
So I've taken out a subscription for Creative Cloud 2014 including Photoshop & Lightroom 5.
My question is:- How do I migrate all my photos including organising them into Events / Collections from iPhoto to Lightroom 5?
I've seen a tutorial that recommended downloading a free trial of Photoshop Elements 12 to use that as a sort of 'missing link' between the two apps, but it didn't work in that it didn't keep my photos organised in Events / Collections. I just ended up with a load of esoterically generically named folders which made no sense.
Surely there must be a way, shouldn't there?

Because Apple has dropped "Aperture" and is switching users away from "iPhoto" to a new photo application called "Photo" so that they are more fully integrated with the Yosemite 10 and the iOS 8.3 going forward there are some instructions how to import photos into Lightroom without losing to much metadata or other information. To simply import the original files is quite a simple process.
Locate the iPhoto Library (default is your Pictures Folder). Right click on it and select "Show Package Contents".
Locate the Masters folder and drag it onto the Lightroom icon or an open Library window. This will invoke the Import command.
Be sure "Include Subfolders" is checked.
Now you can import all the original files.
If your goal is to maintain structure of the Events it gets a little more tedious. Drag the event onto the Lightroom icon or the Library window. Once imported you can group them into a Collection Name that mimics the Event.
Repeat with other events.
With the impending demise of iPhoto and Aperture, I suspect Apple may be working with Adobe to develop an automated process that will also maintain metadata that was added in those programs. If you can wait a while, it may be worth it.

I am trying to transfer photo files from iphoto to lightroom 5. I don't want to transfer all of the photos, only certain ones. I did see the posts about transferring the Photoshop Elements and then to Lightroom 5. Also, I'm way over the reasonable limit of files in iphoto - 23,000 images. Any suggestions? Is it reasonable to transfer that many files to Elements and then Lightroom? Or should I try to pare it down first?

If you want to transfer photos with your adjustments it is best to export versions from iPhoto to the desktop. Better still create folders in Finder and put them in a permanent location.
Then import into Lightroom from that location using "Add" in the LR import dialog.

If it's a POP account and you set it up in Mail with the option to delete read messages from the server, then you can indeed no longer read it on the server. You may be able to restore the messages to the server if you also have IMAP access. Ask your mail service provider whether it's possible.

The problem with iPhoto is it copies and or moves all your photo into it's database structure which is just a pain
It moves nothing. It can copy, or reference the images.
Even Picasa is better then iPhoto as it actually displays RAW images.
As Keith says, iPhoto work with every format that the OS supports - in other words all the same ones as Aperture.
iPhoto doesn't even support Adobe DNG format.

As for migrating from iPhoto to Lightroom: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.

Now that you mentioned it, that might be the source of the problem. Something was definitely wrong with my graphics card before the incident happened. You mean that particular batch of graphics cards had some inherent issues, right? I went to the genius bar, and the 'genius' there, without trying to diagnose the problem properly, just adviced me to buy a new mbp! He said Apple will no longer try to fix or touch macs older than 5 yrs. Mine is 5.5 yrs old...

Migration from iPhoto to Lightroom 3 for Apple OS X 10.6

Dear all
This question refers to the Apple version of Lightroom.
Do you know any way of migrating all RAW, tiff, jpg, etc. files from iPhoto to Lightroom 3beta while conserving the original format? Ideally the migration should replicate also the iPhoto folders in Lightroom folders, so that I don't have to recreate the order pre-existing in iPhoto.

Not correct at all - please see my previous response to a similar post.
Although you may want to check my work - I don't know a thing about iPhoto - I'm assuming the iPhoto directory structure is also a disk directory structure, like Aperture can be - is that correct? Or is it a figment of iPhoto's imagination, so to speak - if so, disregard everything I said in this post and the other one too.

I can download (from cloud) Adobe Lightroom 4 but it will not open - error 0x000007b

I can download, from Cloud, other Adobe products BUT when I download Lightroom 4 it will not open and gives an error message "This application was unable to start correctly (0x000007b).
Previously I had purchased, singularily, Lightroom 3 and it worked well for almost a year but suddently when I would try to open I received the same error message as above. I have tried MULTIPLE courses to try to fix this but cannot.

Thank you for your reply. Other adobe apps are not a problem, i.e., Adobephotoshop, Adobe Acrobat Xi, etc. The version 3 that was initially purchased worked fine for several months and then reverted to the error message agove. When I purchased Cloud and downloaded LR4 the download was fine but again would not open. I have spent hours on the phone with tech help from India and it was a massive waste of time.... I ran a repair on Windows, downloaded 32bit version of LR3 and it seems to work some...could not find 32bit of LR4. I have installed and removed the program more than 10 times. I do not know what "event viewer" is nor where I would find it. Disappointed in the system and appalled with tech support.

Welcome. I have a problem with downloading and installing programs from the App Store. I am logged into the App Store, and when I click on install it does not react like the makings download eg OS X Maverics it kind of gets but nothing goes. Button is pressed install like and after a while returns to the state before clicking that is to this that I can to click to start the download or installation of.

I was checking on the iPhone does not. I wanted to install a new OS X Maverics first and I had an older OS X Lion write it and now wants to download the OS X Maverics and I can not, and the like to log into the App Store.

I'm new to Lightroom. Struggling with downloading from iPhoto to Lightroom. Pls help??
