I'm on my 5th CD to burn disc (iTunes).  "Burn failed due to medium  write error.  What is that!?!!!

I am attempting to burn a music list in iTunes.  I have done it many times before.  I am on my fifth CD for this list, and repeatedly have got a message that the CD "could not be burned because of a medium write error."  I've got that message previously, but after changing the blank disc to which I want to add the song list, it has always worked.  Not this time; several attempts.  What is this message telling me, if anything??

The disk you are using probably has a defect, not uncommon on consumer grade disks. Try another disk or better yet another disk from a different manufacturer or at least a different batch.

i think the CD was bad.   i took the machine to the Apple store and they said the Optical Drive was OK.   so it must be the CD's i'm using... i use Verbatim type.   let me know.

'Mediium write error' means it failed to write to the disc - some makes work better than others and you may just have hit a single bad disc or maybe your burner doesn't like the make of disc. I've always had good results with TDK.

While trying to burn a CD of a playlist, the disc was ejected with the message "medium write error" . What does this mean and how do I fix it?

I had been getting this all morning and checked other messages from the community. THe one which worked was trying a different brand of disc.
I had been using Verbatim which had copied the music fine off the Real Player on my PC at school, but wouldn't work with I Tunes. Tried a Staples and an Office Depot CD-R , both of which did the job.

I am unable to burn mp3 audio files to cd.Every time it says failed due to media write error.I have tried different speeds. Can anyone help pls?

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):

  • Burn failed because of "Medium Write Error."

I've got a early '08 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.5.8 and iLife '09.
I'm trying to burn a tracked podcast to a CD, and after getting through all the mixdowns and normalizing, it will burn for a short while and will "finish" the burn, eject the CD and come up with a "Burn Failed" message that says,
"The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867 drive failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error."
This problem has just recently developed. I've done this many times in the past, but the last few CDs I've tried to burn have taken me four or five tries until I get a successful burn. I'm tired of wasting my CD-Rs!
My drive reads both CDs and DVDs without a problem, and burns through iTunes without a problem.
What's going on? Can I do anything to fix this?

    UPDATE!!!
On suspicion as I am camera geek, (film maker)
I know dust can do weird things, I took the blank part of the disc container, you know, usually solid color or clear and cut it into a gun shape and wrapped it in one of my fiber fine lens cloth.
I gently inserted it to knock some dust loose, (think optical eye) be careful not to twist or shove to hard if resistance is met. did the old nintendo blow in the drive fromt the side and prayed.
Went back to FCPX and re-shared to disc and....... Voila!!
    Burned several discs already.
Good luck if you have this.
I suspect the dust from my over amped fans due to SMC fan control could have blown dust or hair on the optic and prevented it, (this is where apple listens close)
Please advixe your "techs" to suggest compressed air or disc cleaners..although my disc cleaner did nothing.

  • Burning failure " medium write error" ????

    hi folks,
have had no problem burning from current iTunes.
Downloaded two CD's from iTunes today. The first burned to CD just fine.
the second informed me that I would have to use two CD's > I said yes. (I'm using 80 minute audio Cd's - and as I said it worked fine on the other burning .) I have now tried several times and I get the following error notification at the end :
"the attempt to burn failed because of a medium write error".
what does this mean? and what can I do to correctly burn
    thanks
    sue
strangely, I put the disk in and it is filled with the songs .

    Hi Peter,
very similar. In my case, while it was burning the songs that had been successfully downloaded and added to the iTunes Library (from which I was attempting the burn), I encountered a similar problem in relation to the above mentioned group of songs that ultimately stated the medium error message however had in fact been burned but with NO song titles.)
While they were burning - and I tried after also- I clicked "get song titles". that is when I got the message you also got about not being able to find the album on the iTunes site. I unfortunately said yes to the download request (which is interesting since it had just said that they could not be found. Ultimately I realized that I then had doubled the album , that I then had to trash. and , of most importance to this issue, the titles were never inserted - remained track #s.
I even tried selecting and burning only 5 or so of the album titles to see if it was the 22 songs that was resulting in the abnormality (since the other albums had normal 8-10 songs and burned just fine) . No difference. same result
So I'm afraid that I have no wonderful solution for you on this one. I am still holding out hope that it is the memorex Cds and will get different Cds tomorrow. Hope springs eternal
I will report back and would appreciate your doing the same if you discover some wonderful solution :-D

  • The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.

When trying to burn a CD, I'm getting an error that reads:The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.  I experienced this message before and took my Macbook in to the store and the the genius was stumped but when he tried one of his CD's it burned fine to he concluded that the problem was in the CD's NOT the Macbook or program  HOWEVER, months later, I'm having the same issue using the NEW CD's.  Does anyone have any information about this?

    3 methods to fix this:
The first is to reset pram
at boot up hold four keys down till you hear 3 chimes:
    command(apple)=option+p+r
release keys and it will now reboot.
The second is to reset nvram
at boot up hold four keys down:
    command(apple)+option+o+f
    a black screen will appear
    now type: reset-nvram
    click enter
    now type: reset-all
    click enter
    it will now reboot
The third is to open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to english
make sure "word break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart.
I hope this helps you as it certainly did me. :^)

hello, I'm trying to burn a playlist from itunes to a cd, but I keep getting a message saying "the attempt to burn a CD failed because of a medium write error" can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm not so tech savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I'm not familiar with this error, but check the following:
-Is your disc a CD or a DVD? You want a CD, not a DVD.
-Is the CD blank? You'll want a blank one.
-Maybe the disc is scratched and cannot be used. Try another CD.
-Maybe your disc burner is broken. If you have another, try it.

  • Getting medium write error on burning a disc image using Disk utility

Have a MacBrook Pro 15 inch, circa Summer 2007, using OX 10.4.11. up until recently (as in before February) have been able to burn DVD's using Toast (message Medium Writer Error). Started getting problems where the burn failed. Thought maybe it was Toast, so I tried creating an iDVD project and tried to burn the DVD using that, and it stopped in the middle as well and then spit the disk out with no error message.
, this time I tried creating a disc image, and used disk utility to burn. The process looked like it was going to work but then failed with a message that I have a medium write error.
I have no problems burning a regular data disk on my superdrive so I am thinking it's maybe a software glitch rather than hardware. . Any thoughts, as to what could be causing this problem all of a sudden. By the way, there are other users out there, who seems to be having DVD burning problems all of a sudden, but most people suggest other media. I am using the same stack of DVD-R's from before when I had no problem.

Well, I had assumed my media was ok, since I had a spindle of DVD-R's and had used many of them successfully (until now!, ha ha).
I went out this afternoon and bought another brand (Memorex) and it successfully recorded.
So hopefully this solves my problem, I had no idea it was the media since I had used several of them before.
    Thanks for your help.

  • DVD-R burn error "medium write error"

Just received a refurbished iMac today. Doing a basic Disc Copy from Disk Utility and burn one disc OK. The second disc ejects half way through burn and "medium write error" pops up. All the disc I pull out are blazing hot as well. I don't know if this has anything to do with it.
I am trying another burn now. Has anybody seen this error or had DVD-R burning issues?
    Thanks,
    Adam

I saw this using Toast 9 -- turned out I had turned on the DVD-DL support by accident and I didn't have a DL DVD drive.

  • Medium write error when burning a DVD. Uh?

So I mounted my DVD and burnt 2 x copies successfully. When it came to number three the message "Medium write error" came up and the disk was rejected unburnt! I got the new iMac cos the old one's DVD burner failed. What can I do to get things working again? iMac is about a month old.

is there a list of media that works in a mac?
or is it safe to say that the more expensive the dvds the highr the chance that it will work
