Phoenix,
Like the others mentioned you need the 10.6.8 version to do an upgrade over your existing OS.
Have you tried a clean install after backing up your data and erasing your HDD? I'm assuming your hardware qualifies. If your USB stick is bootable you could do a clean install with it. Or if you have the InstallESD.dmg file, burn it to DVD and perform a clean install.

You must use the Windows formatter to format your Windows partition NTFS. Please be sure you select the Windows partition otherwise you might end up formatting your OS X partition NTFS.

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

All my hard drives (internal and external) have a small lock in the lower left corner of the icon and I don't have permissions to access. I have 3 user accounts set up and I cannot access any of them.   Permissions are set to 'Custom' in the get info window and I can't change them. Originally I had Snow Leopard installed on one hard drive and 10.5.8 installed on another.   I started to have some problems accessing data between them and so I tried changing the permissions on ONE hard drive partition.   The next thing I know, all my drives are locked (except the ones with the systems on them), the small lock appeared in the lower left corner of the drive icons and I don't have permissions to access any of them.   In the get info window, permissions are set to 'Custom' and I can't change them.

There is suddenly a lock icon on my external backup drive!

After spending another two days on pinning down the iTunes 10.5 blank store page problem, here's the solution to be found: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3372617?start=0&tstart=0
    Look out for "japiohelp".
    In short:
    a) press Windows key + "R", enter "cmd", and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (= runs as admin)
    b) enter "netsh winsock reset" and pres enter
    c) reboot the computer
    and Bob's your uncle.

Hello fuchs (guess), If you cancelled while downloading the 4GB Lion, no problem, download again. Snow Leopard should run (start holding the option key).
If you cancelled during the install process, I do not know. In this case you could try to start with the CMD + R keys pressed, and choose the restore, which may work if the creation of the restore partition of Lion has finished.
If that does not work, reinstall Snow Leopard with the CD (start holding the C key), after that download the Combo Update 10.6.8 to update the Snow Leopard completely, then redownload Lion (App Store, click "purchases" while holding the Option Key, find Lion, click "install"). If you want to have your own copy of the Lion installer, you have to copy the installer to a Memory stick or burn to DVD before you install, see else where.

The SD card slot ois for SD cards not Memory Sticks. hat is why nothing is happening. you will need a Memory stick reader that connects to one of the USB ports.

  • Unable to boot up/into (win7) bootcamp partition following Mountain Lion upgrade

    Greetings to all, I hope somebody could please help me with this issue;
A few days ago I upgraded to mountain lion, and immediately after the upgrade was completed and the system rebooted, I discovered that a new partition (Recovery-10.8) had suddenly come into existence in place of my bootcamp partition upon holding alt on boot.  My bootcamp partition does show up now after re-syncing boot tables in rEFIt, though all that happens while booting up is a missing operating system error.  I tried the win7 boot dvd, but it does not and did not see the partition; but very strangely, it referred to my computer as %1, and my account name in OS X is simply “1”.  This leads me to believe that my bootcamp partition got knocked back a spot due to the introduction of that pesky new partition, a problem all too similar to many others’ pleas for help, though too individually complex for a simple copy and paste type of a solution~ and for a lowly user like me to tackle.
Please do help me good sirs,
    Regards,
    Royce
P.s. bootcamp partition never showed on startup disk
P.p.s. in disk utility it cannot be mounted, is referred to as disk0s4, and is greyed out

I see two things. First, notice this fourth line from your GPT. It says ~73GB of disk space is not allocated to any partition, it's free space. Why?
    40          409600       1  GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B
    409640      742851896    2  GPT part - 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC
    743261536   1269536      3  GPT part - 426F6F74-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC
    744531072   153633664
    898164736   78608384     4  GPT part - EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7
The good news is that partition 4 for Windows in the GPT and MBR have the same start - end sectors. However in the MBR no partition is marked bootable. One must be bootable and it's customary for Apple to mark the Windows partition bootable. I strongly suspect this is why Windows is not a boot option, and it's rather easy to fix.
    4: 0C 1023 254  63 - 1023 254  63 [ 898164736 -   78608384] Win95 FAT32L
My suggestion is that you reclaim the missing free space before you proceed with MBR repair, but missing ~73GB of space isn't hurting anything. Try the following and report back:
    diskutil list /dev/disk0
    diskutil resizevolume /dev/disk0 limits
Again both are read-only commands and do not alter the disk information in any way.

  • Slow reboot after deleting bootcamp partition

    Hello,
I was just told by a tech store that my bootcamp partition was slowing down my computer incredibly. I no longer need this partition so I went into Disk Utility, clicked the partition, and deleted it. I also had my RAM updated from 4GB to 8GB. I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro, operating on Yosemite.
The only question I have is, when I rebooted my computer for the first time after deleting the partition, the restarting process took much longer than normal. Without the bootcamp startup, I figured the startup time would be less, when in reality, it was longer. Is there something I missed while deleting my partition, and is there a way to fix this and speed up the reboot time? If not, will this slow reboot be a one time issue?
    Any comments would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Rachel

There is a hidden Recovery HD between the OS X and the deleted BC partition, which you can verify using
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
    in OSX Terminal.
BCA does a better job by also relocating the Recovery HD appropriately and giving you a contiguous partition.
The only other method is to subsume Recovery HD in OS X partition and then re-install OS X which will rebuild Recovery HD. This does not modify any of you files, but just the OS.
You will also need to clean the Hybrid MBR which is now dangling and inappropriate for your case.

  • Bootcamp in Windows 7 Enterprise can't be updated

I'm using Windows 7 Enterprise and bootcamp 3.0 on my MacBook. Problems is I can't update to bootcamp 3.1 manually or by software update. What's wrong?

There's also a way to delete a file in Windows to make the Apple Software Updater recheck and then update everything but I'll be buggered if I can find it.
This may be easier, try this link first. It's an older archive but the features are still there.
""Alternately, in Classic View of Control Panel,         click Programs and Features."" (Its the same in W7 under classic view)
It may also be a Permissions issue to tho.
You CAN just install the Boot Camp 3.1 video driver by itself (or all of them) if that's the only one giving you problems. You just extract the individual driver(s) directly from the main file.
If your daughter is using 10.7 and has W7 installed then you can update directly to Boot Camp 4.0 via the Boot Camp Assistant in Lion. Here's a link that can give you more information.
Basically while booted into Lion you use an empty USB thumb drive (4 gig should be fine, or 6 or 8 gig if you want to install an iso version of W7 in the future) and using "Disk Utility"  format it as MS-DOS (FAT) and it will then download the drivers onto it. Be prepared, as it's a fairly large file (600MB?ish).
When it's done downloading unplug the USB drive first then re-boot into Windows and then you can plug the USB drive in and the Boot Camp installer should start right up. You should get an installer window asking to "Run setup.exe" or "Open" as a folder when it mounts. It may take several seconds after plugging it in. If it doesn't then open it up and click on the "setup.exe" and off you go.
If you leave the drive plugged in when you reboot, sometimes the installer won't start-up automatically.

  • Ubuntu, Windows, and iTunes can't see my iPod. What can I do?

I have an iPod 5g and i have been messing around with it and i discovered the problem of iTunesLock preventing me from accessing the iPod and putting itself back on. Well in a stroke of genius I deleted the Play Counts and iTunesLock files also trying to see if that would stop iTunesLock from reappearing every time i plug in my iPod.
Now my computer (running Ubuntu 7.10) does not see it at all. Also windows does not see it, until i remove it then it says my iPod is corrupted, but when i connect it, iTunes denies any knowledge of seeing it.
I tried to use this website to help and it did nothing for me.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/38851/2004/09/trubipod.html
Right now when i turn it on it shows the "Connect to computer. Use iTunes to restore iPod."
then it goes into disk mode. Strangely, even in disk mode neither windows nor Linux can see it.
I went into the diagnostics menu and everything seems to check out fine.
i know there is a .Trash-matthew file on the iPod and i have a great suspicion that if i can get on the iPod and see the hidden files then i could just put the file back.
Also BIOS does see it so I don't think its completely bricked yet.
I am using linux but I have access to Windows Vista. So I can work in either format.

  • Windows and itunes can now see my ipod!!

    Hi
    Chris... any anyone else interested
I have managed to get my ipod to work with windows and itunes. but at a cost. some of my music and movies will not coppy back ontot he ipod and chkdsk of C:\ showed many errors in the itunes directory. these files worked previously so my conclusion is that updating has somehow corrupted files and ipod update software on the ipod itself.
Heres what i had to do
    1. My pod was showing version 1.0 even though I had version 1.2 previously. this may have been due to the attempt at a re-set from advice given on the forum for trying to get reconnection (5R's) so i wanted to re-run updater.
    2. ipod updater (found in C:\program files\ipod) could not run due to previous topics posted (ipod ejected after 10 seconds without update and drive diappears from 'my computer'). so...I uninstalled itunes 7.2, and reinstalled itunes 6. To do this I had to rename my current library 'itunes 7.02 old' to avoid the 'itunes cannot continue to install as your library was created in a later version' error message.
    3. Itunes 6 still did not recognise itunes and kicked it off windows too just like before. The difference was however that this time running ipod updater from C:\program files\ipod\.... allowed it to update from the previous installer and this set the ipod back to version 1.1 but obviously during this process all items on the ipod were deleted. This update was allowed despite the drive not showing up in 'my computer'?
    4. plugging in the updated ipod opened itunes and at last the ipod icon appeared and the drive remained in windows. I updated to software version 1.2 and itunes 7.02
    5. I then went into c:\......my music\itunes and renamed the current library 'itunes' to '7.02' and my previously renamed 'itunes library 7.02 old' back to 'itunes'
    6. on restarting itunes my whole old library was reinstated.
there were 68 problems and an empty 'movie' folder was seen as 'corrupt' by windows. CHKDSK on C drive removed any corruption. Everything else seems to be updating ok....my purchased games, movies, audio etc...
So in summary if you are stuck in the loop of being unable to restore an old itunes due to having a new library or not being able to use the previous ipod updater to restore your ipod follow the steps above and all should be ok.
this does not solve the cause however so any comments on what may have happened would be most appreciated.
    Matt/Alan

    Hey there MattSK123,
Thank you for your question. It sounds like you are unable to see either of your devices in the sidebar of iTunes after a recent update. A number of issues could cause this type of behaviour, and would recommend starting with the troubleshooting from the article named:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
If the issue is not resolved, I would next re install iTunes from either of the following articles depending on the version of Windows you have:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
    Or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling
