I would suggest you upgrade your computer's OS minimally to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

Try downloading another app - any free app - that seems to reset something and the apps may start working again. Try that first. If that doesnt work, try these steps
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Close all apps. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

All Macs running OS X Lion or newer have got Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 However, Mid 2010 and newer MacBooks Pro support Internet Recovery through a firmware update.
If you have got a Mid 2010 or newer MacBook Pro, you need to install a EFI update to install Internet Recovery, so open  > Software Update, and install all updates. If you do not see any EFI update, you already have got Internet Recovery. You can start up in Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting up.
If you have got an older MacBook Pro, you cannot use Internet Recovery, but you have got the Recovery partition to reinstall Mac OS X. To start up into OS X Recovery, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting up.

What can I do to see items that I have purchased but upgraded to iTunes Plus? They are not showing in my iCloud as purchased, but I still can see the original protected versions from old backups. Thanks for the reply although I'm not too happy to hear it. What's awesome about the cloud is no longer having to keep up with any physical media. The promise of that is realized with everything else (my work, music, books) besides movies and TV.
I wonder how Google Play will handle movies/tv that becomes unavailable? Google Play does allow you to download media in some circumstances (on Android and iOS) but is generally intended for streaming. Maybe relying on a physical copy as I do with iTunes should make me more comfortable with it and not less.

I am now running Windows 7 Ultimate on my Macbook Pro and the through VMware Fusion Software and I have a few questions about the ins and outs.

So far I have a few kinks to work out. While running Internet Explorer 8, I get the error message, " Cannot connect to the internet." In Networks on the control panel, it says that I am connected to a local area public network but there is no internet access. How do I establish a connection to my existing network which works with the mac os? Also, of course, programs like Adobe, Quick Time Player, and uTorrent/bitorrent are already installed on my computer. Do I have to download them again on windows or can I import them or share them somehow?

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. If you renamed your iCloud ID and need to change it on your device, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID. This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud. Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account. To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

Can I run a factory reset on my MacBook Pro and later reinstall my purchased apps, or will I have to pay for them again?

My MacBook Pro is a work computer, and my company may need to run a factory reset on it. I don't have much faith in their abilities to save any of my info, so I am backing all my photos and videos up on an external hard drive, but I am concerned I will lose my purchased apps in the process.

Like posted above if you purchased them from the Mac App store all you have to do is Login to the MAS with the same Apple ID used to buy them and they will be available for Re-Download and install.
If you purchased some of them from the developers website then the developer might of sent you a registration code in an email. Find those and make a Text Document out of them and then Print that text Doc and save it to that external for safe keeping.
You can then go back to the developer website and re-download their program and install it using that key/reg code to authorize it.
