I'm running ARD 3.2 on Tiger 10.4.11

I'm running Tiger on a Macbook Pro, and also Tiger on an older G4 with Tiger also. I set up ARD 3.2 properly, as I was able to control the G4. But all of sudden one day I couldn't log onto the G4 as the MacBook Pro ARD would just hang at connecting to G4. It won't even time out, it'll just sit there trying to connect.
I can connect to that same G4 with my PC via VNC Viewer. So I'm not sure what's happened. I've uninstalled ARD on the MacBook Pro, but I'm not sure how to uninstall ARD on the G4 as I only use the client there. But I haven't gotten ARD to work since it suddenly stopped.
Thanks. Oh this is not over the internet, it's all local network.

Chicken of the VNC shouldn't hurt since it's a client, not a server (VNC terminology is the reverse of how the ARD docs refer to "client"). CotVNC doesn't install anything other than the app itself, so I doubt it would be the problem. The ARD client does indeed work as a VNC server; that's how the ARD admin itself does observe and control, via the VNC protocols. The problem would arise if you installed something like OpenVNC on the workstation you're trying to connect to; that would bollix up ARD.
How do you simply log in as sudo user, so I can just execute all the terminal commands without sudo(ing) everytime.
You would have to log in as root, as far as I know. Otherwise you have to use sudo.

  • Run ARD administrer from a remote computer

Sorry if this has been answered previously; searching with terms like remote and administrator doesn't restrict many responses.
I have installed ARD on one of my Leopard Servers and I would like run it from my desktop computer as I do the server applications. Is this possible or do I have to be sitting at the server run ARD? I have checked through the Administrators Guide but can't find anything about this but it seem like a natural thing to want to do
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Bill

If you don't need to run ARD from your workstation, you could have just the single copy of ARD on the server and take control of that via 10.5 screen sharing (that should still work with the ARD admin app running on the server, though I've never tried it) or VNC. Then you wouldn't need two copies of ARD. If you want ARD on your workstation as well, though, then you will need to purchase a second copy of ARD if you don't have two copies now.

  • Want to connect to client's server with ARD, and run ARD on the server.

Hi, I have Apple Remote Desktop and use it to monitor, update and service clients servers. I also have client's buy ARD to use internally to access, update and maintain computers on the network.
When I try to access/sign-in to a server with ARD, when it's running ARD, it will not connect.
What is the proper way to ARD into a server and still be able to run ARD on the server to connect with and work on other computers on the local network?
    Thanks in advance.

On the client server install of ARD, open ARD, select preferences, select security tab, and make sure "allow control of this computer when ARD is running" is selected.

  • Running Microsoft Office 2001 with Tiger vs Classic

    Mac experts,
Okay, I have a couple of questions. First, I recently installed Tiger 10.4 on my G3 laptop. Runs great eventhough I know I'm pushing the envelope with only 128 MB of memory and at 400 MHz speed. Anyhow, since I also run several programs that required the Classic environment, I went ahead and installed 9.2.2 as well. Both systems seem to work well with each other. I then decided to update to Microsoft Office 2001 which went smoothly as well. The problem (and maybe it's not a problem) is only Classic will run Office eventhough Tiger will run Office for me on my iMac (G4). Is there a way to tell my little ole G3 laptop to run Office from Tiger instead of Classic. I have encounter some freez-ups when working in Office (just Word so far). I would be working and periodically hit save to save the work and several times, when save was hit the machinge would freeze up and require me to do a force quit. Anyhow, any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.
Second question. I take a lot of pictures and use iLife to make slide shows and movies. My iMAc has only a 20 GB harddrive so as you can imagine it fills up rather quickly. I purchased a 300 GB external harddrive to store all of my "productions" but was wondering if there is a way to automatically save photos in iphoto and music in itunes directly to the external harddrive instead of periodically making the transfer manually?
Thanks guys for all your help!
    Mark

You need Office X or Office 2004 to run it natively in Mac OS X.
As for iTunes/iPhoto you can set where documents are stored in the preferences section of each application.

  • OS 9 unable to boot after running classic in OS X Tiger fro first time

I have this problem with dual boot on an iMac 400 after upgrading the OS X to Tiger.
After I install the Tiger, I tried to boot up from OS 9 is OK.I restarted in OS X and launch the classic environment, it performs some update to the System Folder and run classic successfully. After which I try to restart in OS 9 by selecting in Startup Disk in Syatem Preferences, once I click restart, it starting up showing the OS 9 mac icon but it change to disk with question mark immediately.
Have anyone tried this and having the same problem ?

    Hi Leonard!
How did you upgrade to Tiger?
    Simple Upgrade?
    Archive & Install?
    Erase & Install?
Which OS did you upgrade from?
There is some info here Computer Can Start Up From Mac OS X But Not From Mac OS 9.
    Quoted from that page:
It is likely that the disk was reformatted using Disk Utility for Mac OS X, and that the option to install the Mac OS 9 drivers was not selected. If you do this and then reinstall Mac OS 9 from the Restore CD set included with your computer, it will no longer start up from Mac OS 9, for example. Any time the Mac OS 9 drivers are not installed on the hard disk, you will not be able to start up from Mac OS 9.
    Does that pertain?
    Good Luck!

  • Running Snow Leopard but need Tiger for ONE application... Possible?

Hello all... I currently have an intel Macbook Pro which is about 3.5 yrs old. My OS is Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and I love it.. however, I also need to use an old version of Avid Xpress Pro which recommends running 10.4.6-10.4.8 (Tiger). This is the only application that I have that requires this OS... Unfortunately, I need the app for now.
    My question is this:
Can I partition (or by any other means) a portion of my Mac for Tiger 10.4.8 and the rest for Snow Leopard?
If so how do I go about it?
    Many thanks!!

Having the original disks does not matter... the question is, what did your Mac _ship with_? If it shipped with Tiger, then you can certainly partition and install Tiger on a second partition. Of course, if it were me, I would probably just buy an external drive and install Tiger on that, but that's just personal preference. If you choose to partition, just make sure you've got a good set of backups. You should be able to do it without erasing, but should not gamble your data on it going off without a hitch.
OTOH, if your Mac shipped with something other than Tiger, you simply cannot run Tiger on it. See:

  • How to run classic on OS X Tiger 10.4.10

    Hello Mac-users.
Before I got my MacBook, I used to play Diablo. Well, I wanted to play Diablo on my Mac too, but as I was about to install it, a message popped up and said, that my system could not open it. Maybe I need Classic Environment for my OS X Tiger version (10.4.10), but if I do, how will I be able to install it - if I can?
Otherwise, can anyone give me a clue on how to make my Mac 'accept' the installationsoftware?
I know this subject might have been up a few times, but I could not find other subjects that kind of answered my question.
    - Kasper Hansen, Denmark

I assume your MacBook is a PowerPC model (G5, G4, etc). If it is Intel based, you CANNOT run the Classic evironment on it as it will simply not be recognised. If it IS PowerPC based, then you can install Classic within OS X 10.4.x (and also 10.3, 10.2 & 10.1) but there are issues to consider: see
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106434 and
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
Don't bother with versions earlier than OS 9.2.2
Also, as you don't already have the Classic environment, I'm not sure if merely downloading OS 9.2.2 will do the trick as this is not in itself the Classic emulation environment you need. I've searched Apple's website including the Downloads section but can't find a specific Classic download. When I bought my G5 PowerMac, it was supplied with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and Classic was included on the Intallation CD. I've since upgraded to 10.3 and then 10.4, and Classic is not included on 10.4's Installation DVD although 10.4 supports Classic if you already have it installed as I have. If you can't find a Classic download on the Apple website, all I can suggest is that you find someone with an installation CD/DVD for 10.2 and borrow it to install Classic. I'm not certain if Classic is included on the 10.3 Installation disk so you'd have to check if you can't find a 10.2 disk. Reading the pages I've supplied links to above, I suspect you may need to re-install 10.4.10 after installing Classic, but the info ion this isn't clear. After installing Classic, set it's Prefs so that a Classic icon appears in the right-hand portion of your extreme upper menu bar. This enables you to turn Classic on and off as required. Only turn it on when you need to use it as it slows the Mac noticeably (even with dual G5 CPUs!!). Hope this helps.

  • Running ARD 2.2 on OS 10.5

I'm trying to launch ARD 2.2 on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5 and not having much luck. It begins to 'install required components' but before it can finish it quits.
Found an article on apple's website that lists steps to use to install ARD 2.2 on Intel-based macs (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303128). In step 3 it says to select ARD in the Sharing preference pane but ARD isn't listed there.
Is ARD 2.2 incompatible with OS 10.5?
If so, what are my alternatives?
    Thanks!

ARD 2.2 is not supported on Leopard. At least one user (raus), though, posted here that he got ARD 2.2 to work in Leopard. Here's what he did: from the Finder, navigate to:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteMangement
From the folder, delete (or move) the ARDAgent v3.X file. Reinstall the 2.2 update for ARD on the Apple site. (This may be optional; the original poster just reinstalled the update to be safe.) You can reportedly now run Remote Desktop 2.2 in 10.5. This works for PowerPC and Intel Mac.
Note, though, that this is completely unsupported by Apple and may or may not work, or may cause issues. For proper support for Leopard, you need ARD 3.2.
    Good luck.

  • I run ARD 2.2, have 2.0 disc, need to set up Intel Mac clients

    Hi,
What's the easiest way to do that?
One has tried to install 2.0 and it gets stuck while "finalizing" the installation (may have been on the computer before). The other I haven't tried yet, but he knows NOTHING about computers (thus the need for ARD).
What's the simplest way to get them both up and running?
They should both be on relatively current OSes (10.4.8-10).
I've seen many posts talking about getting the ADMIN up and running, but not sure what's the shortest, simplest, shortest way to get Clients going.
    They need the disc, right?
Then they need to install it (but that's where one of them gets stopped)
Then they need to NOT open the program once installed
They need to find the client update to 2.2 and install it
Then they can open up the program and enter the program code
Does that sound right or no?
Is a 2.0 client truly installed on machines to begin with? The one that may have had it before had a system that said it wasn't installed (in Sharing), but after the failed install, it said the computer did have it, but it won't work.
It gets stuck in the same spot in installation.
Why is it so complicated to support a product sold to me not that long before 3 was released? Shouldn't have to scrap the whole thing when I didn't really get a chance to use the product. Don't recall it saying Intel Macs not supported.
Thanks for any and all help.

    They need the disc, right?
Wrong. Any Intel-based Mac system already has the 2.2 ARD client installed, so all you need to do is activate it in the Sharing -> Remote Desktop privileges. You do not need to reinstall the client nor should you; reinstalling from a disk or downloaded updater will overwrite the Intel-native client with the PowerPC one and then it work work correctly. If you've already overwritten the Intel client on a workstation, you'll have to use Pacifist to extract it for reinstallation or (perhaps easier) do an Archive and Install reinstallation of Mac OS X on the Intel systems.

  • Applications on MacBook run slow since upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I have upgraded my MacBook from Tiger to Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, my Mac runs very slowly and it takes several minutes to load a program. I cannot use my graphic softwares and firefox properly, because it takes several minutes to actually start up the application and also to use the application.
My MacBook states that 45 GB from a total of 110 GB are available space. Do I need to upgrade my HardDrive disk space, or do I need to upgrade my Ram?? What can I do so that my applications/software on my MacBook runs quicker (as they have been prior the Snow Leopard upgrade)?
Please advise! Details of my MacBook below.
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB

Hi...If it were my MacBook I would repair permissions via Disk Utility...(in your Applications > Utilities) folder......as well as 'Verify Disk' while you are in the Disk Utility....both functions are under the 'First Aid' tab...single click 'MacIntosh HD' to select it (left column) and then run First Aid.....see what that shows and does first
Expect some odd error messages while repairing permissions....ignore them...

  • Problems running ARD 3 with Lion

Ever since I updated to OS X Lion, my ARD will not start, it says "The Remote Desktop Administrator software does not match the installed Client software version."  Any ideas?

A further update on my problem with ARD 3.5.
Tried to use screen sharing and it too does not work. Old reliable Chicken of the VNC does seem to work but can be flakey. Tried to access the server (Mac Mini 10.7 ARD Client 3.5.1) from iMac running 10.6.7. Works ok.
Took a clean disk install ard 3.5 cannot access server just hangs. Will connect in observe mode but hangs if you try to switch to control mode.
    This is just crazy!
The hardware that doesn't work is a MBP 13" Mid 2009 model running 10.7. Server 10.7 is running on Mid 2009 Mac Mini and seems ok. Boy did they dumb down the server control interface!!
