    hi...
i've been trying all weekend to update my nano and its annoying me so much.
ok here are a few of my problems i might come accross:
1- the screen is stuck on 'initializing' and doesn't do anything else.
2- it says 'your ipod doesn't have the support to back-up this update' or something like that
    please what can i do!!!!!
    thanks

  • Absolutely sick of ipod

my ipod won't load songs onto it. The 'cannot update ipod, as file is missing' message just comes up when I try to. I have followed the steps on here (deleting the ipod software updates) and that hasn't worked. I've reinstalled i-tunes, restarted ipod and computer etc and nothing seems to be working. i can't restore my ipod as an error message comes up.
i got my ipod as a christmas present, and i don't really have the option of returning it, as i also got speakers and accessories, and it would mean sending them all back (they were mostly bought off the internet)

Similar problem with my son's new ipod. It all started well, was able to register it and download songs onto it no problem. But for some unknown reason from tonight whenever he connects it to his itunes log on he gets the following messages:
'Cannot be updated. Required file cannot be found' and
'Cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
Carried out all the actions suggested on the support page, i.e. reset ipod, uninstalled then re-installed itunes but still no joy. Connected it to my itunes log-on (which is working fine with my new ipod) and after trying to sync it on their I got exactly the same messages!
Have tried to ring the UK customer support number listed on this Apple site but that of course is giving a number unobtainable tone!
I, like you, am already becoming sick of this ipod and what is more worrying is the amount of posts on this site that show just how problematic the **** thing is!
So if anyone reading can give any help or advice it would be much appreciated.

  • Why can't I download the songs from my ipod to my compute

I'm getting insanely frustrated right now. I got an ipod about a month ago and was ecstatic. I could finally get the 12 gb of music off my computer (all songs I've taken the time to copy from my own legal cds) and onto my ipod. So I got the new itunes and I copied copied all the files to my library and then from there onto my ipod.
I then made sure they all played on the ipod and once they did I made sure that itunes was set to manually manage songs and then removed them from my library clearing my hard drive of them.
Then my ipod starts having issues, it will just randomly restart for no apparent reason, so I take it in to the apple store and they just want to restore it which will wipe all my music. So I say uhm no, can I please back it up first and they say they don't support that.
What the heck is going on here, why does it make any sense to have to leave the music on teh computer?!? It's a portable music device!
I found there are programs that will copy the files back but they cost money which makes no sense. Basically Apple has hijacked my songs and won't give them back.
I'd email them directly about the issue but I can't find any sign of an email link anywhere on teh webpage.
Any help would be much appreciated and please forgive the rant but I'm really getting sick of my ipod restating constantly.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod to discourage it's use as a device for mass file sharing. However there is a manual (free) method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
Not all the third party programs are commercial offerings and you can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
If you want to check out the YamiPod utility it is free but you are also free to make a donation to it's developer if you find it useful: YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • My Ipod touch 4G withdraw some songs. It can see them but can't play.

Does anybody help me? I sick of my Ipod. It regularly loses some songs (randomly without definite order). I have to delete them and transfer them to ipod again or restore ipod, otherwise it will lose more songs. Also it doesn't see some covers but they are shown in itunes. What is the reason of these troubles, does everybody know?
    Thanks for attention.

Try to Reset your device. This often helps with many issues.
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears (ignore the Slide to Power Off option that shows up first).
If that doesn't help, try a Restore:

  • 16000+ reallocs Ipod Classic

    Hi,
I have bought an Ipod classic about 9 months ago, it always made alot of noises ( I know there's a harddrive in there, but my previous classic didn't make THAT much noises). It recently 'broke': i noticed I couldn't sync more than 4000 or so songs, cause when I tried the syncing went soooo slow and always ended up in an error message. After unplugging the Ipod the music would always be gone.
I read the threads and noticed that the 'reallocs' should be as low as possible so I checked and noticed there were 16800+ reallocs on my Ipod...
I gave it to an apple-service store and they told me there was a problem with the harddrive, so they 'fixed' it.
When I came home it still wouldn't sync more than 4000 songs...
I never found an answer to -what I think might be the problem for my high reallocs in such a short time (9 months)- whether downloaded songs might cause the reallocs to shoot up. I have all my music (around 40 G) stored on an external harddrive and when I sync I first copy them to my music folder and then into Itunes.
Would it be possible that there are massive amounts of damaged songs on my harddrive? I download everything through Torrents and try to make sure the torrent links are decent... Playing those songs through other programs such as windows media player never gives any problems whatsoever.
I am praying that someone is able to give me a covering explanation this time, cause honestly I am getting sick of these Ipods.

I have this problem as well with 2 ipods, One about 14 months and one just under a year.  I have had problems syncing ever since Itunes 11 came out.   Now neither will mount and BOTH show over 16,000 reallocs.  I've seen a couple of other posts coming up with 16,000 + shortly after 11 came out.   Odd that BOTH would have such a similar number,

  • Continuosly restarting ipod classic

I'm on my second 160GB iPod classic - the first went back with exactly the same issue.
I loaded about 90GB of music on this second one and about 20GB of video. It worked fine yesterday - i was able to play a random set of playlists and the video without any issues. This was synched without album art - which i thought may have been the first one's problem.
    I selectively synch using playlists.
Last night I topped it up with another 10GB or so of video and more music, taking it up to just 7GB showing as free when the synch had finished.
Having disconnected it normally, the main menu came back ok. Clicking on music though caused it to freeze. I reset it through menu-select - and now its continuously restarting. It doesn't get as far as the main meniu being on display, just the Apple logo.
This is the same issue I had with the first one.
I can't find any way to reset it. And the diagnostic mode isn't accessible either.
Any ideas? Is there a way of hard resetting it? note that it doesn't show up in itunes - given its continuously restarting.

I am experiencing this problem as well. I'm getting pretty sick of my iPod. I've already had to reload all my music onto it twice because it's all been mysteriously erased. For $300 for an 80gb Classic you'd think they could make a product that actually works. If this cannot be fixed and Apple does not make this up to me they have lost yet another customer as a result of their shoddy products.
Currently my 80gb is cycling through the reset process, never getting past the Apple logo. Cannot access disk mode, diagnostic mode or anything. It loads the apple screen, then the screen goes black and i hear it make a clicking noise. It does not respond if i plug it into a computer. This happened after I docked it with a new Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere speaker dock. What can be done about this? Do I need to return it to where I bought it? Should I try to return it to Apple? I hope someone from Apple notices this discussion.

  • Refurbished iPod Touch Difficulties.

I was in need of a new ipod and I saw that the refurbished iPods were way cheaper than the new ones so i got one. I'm begining to think that my cheap purchase was a bad idea... I got the iPod yesterday and when i connected it to my computer (windows pc) it couldn't recognize it as an iPod. instead, it asked me if I wanted to upload pictures off of it and the icon showed that it was an iPod camera. I'm almost positive apple hasn't come out with a camera yet so how do i go about breaking the news to my computer that there is an iPod connected to it?
I also worried about the fact that 2 of my previous ipods have been registered to the same computer in the past and I'm thinking that might be the reason my last one broke. Is my computer just sick of new iPods?

My touch used to do this too. Only started happening after I upgraded to the 2.0 OS (which is what I guess your iPod came installed with).
I would just close this window, and iTunes would go on to recognize the iPod as an iPod and sync, etc. without issues.
What happens when you close the 'camera' dialog window?
    Cheers,
    Rod.

  • IPOD HELP!!! PLEASE!? I CAN'T TAKE IT!!!!

hi, i'm 16 and pretty much am getting sick of the ipod. I always end up having to restore it and delete my 15-20 so GB of data. That is a pain to mut back on. I have an issue now where my ipod displays a sad ipod with an exclamation point. I've read what i should do. It will only let me go into Disk mode for about 20 sec., then it resets itself and then the ipod with the exclamation point appears. Is there anything else i can do so i don't have to replace my iPod? I'm getting really ****** at Apple for not making their products more durable software wise. I'm really considering the Zune. Apple has got to catch up.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'll most likely have to get it serviced again. It's just that I don't want to have to go through the whole process again. This will be my third time and i've only had my 5G 30GB Video iPod since January. I think if Apple can't fix these problems with iTunes and the recent version of iPod update, then they should go back to the way things were before in iTunes 6. So, i guess i'll fill out the Service Request Form and hope for the best.

  • Maybe I don't understand what sync does.

So I dock my ipod, and charge it. I decide to put the rest of the music on my computer onto it. So I hit sync. Instead of adding files that aren't on the ipod it deletes everything but the podcasts on it. My question is why did it do that? I thought that if I hit sync it would add files that were not already on the iPod, am I missunderstanding something here?

This exact same thing happens to me. Except, only when I wish to Sync videos/movies.
I have learned to manually drag EVERYTHING onto my iPod manually. Every time I hit Sync I shouldnt have to cross my fingers and say a prayer in hopes it wont wipe everything off. I think I am going to try the new Winamp this weekend and see if it is less schitzo.
This is my first iPod. Second if you count the 5.5gen that was purchased early august and returned just the day the new Pods were announced. But, the 5.5 had that Sync problem too.
Anyway, first iPod is the first Apple product I purchased since ditching the Mac OS in 2000. Let's just say that already I am sick of this iPod and sick to death of Apple.

  • Why is it my pod touch 4th gen version 4.3.3 won't let me delete some pictures, says total gb is 6.5, and won't let me upgrade the firmware

My iPod touch is version 4.3.3 and recently I was thinking I'm sick of my iPods memory always being full so I can't take pictures. My memory has allowed at max 6.5 gb which is highly annoying so I started by trying to delete photos for room and I deleted about 300 and it didn't allow any more memory so I went to delete 41 more and they wouldn't delete for some reason. So I resorted to upgrading my I.o.s. But when I began downloading it onto my actual iPod an error popped up and it wouldn't let me.
So, my question is how do I get those 41 pictures to delete, make my max capacity of gigabytes higher than 6.5 when it's suppose to have 8, and lastly how can I get my iOS to upgrade?

    - An 8 GB iPod only has about 6.5 GB available to the user.  The difference is due to the iOS taking uop the difference. Also see:
How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity
    - What was the error that apeared when you tried to updaet the iOS?

  • Battery / Charging woes...

H'okay, so here's the Earth... oops.
A while back, I started having problems with my 5G iPod... bad hard drive sectors... and sent it back to Circuit City. They sent me back an iPod with identical specifications (though the backlight seems brighter): White, 60GB, 5th gen. I've been happy with it until recently, where the iPod continually thinks it's charging. Rebooting with Menu + Select does nothing. And unfortunately, I do occasionally forget to plug it in to my computer. This results in the iPod dying. Not dying, but dying dying. It thinks it's charging, so it doesn't think to shut itself off before its battery runs totally dry.
I have to leave the iPod in my drawer for a couple nights before charging it up. When I plug it in to my computer, it will display "Please wait. Battery very low." or something to that effect. It will then charge long enough to boot into the firmware, and continue charging from there. After unplugging the iPod, it doesn't think it's charging anymore... BUT, after using it for a while... suddenly, out of the blue, even while it's not plugged in, it will start to believe that it's charging.
The reasons I've come for your assistance today are...
1: I'm sick of my iPod thinking it's charging, and sick of it dying on me all the time. Lugging around my laptop trying to use Winamp on it... Feasible, but not totally pleasant.
2: The iPod won't charge up. I've tried everything. I've left it in my drawer several times for a night or so... It won't charge when I plug it into my computer. I also tried getting out an old USB hub, plugging it in (not to the computer; just the power), and leaving the iPod plugged in to it overnight. It didn't work either.
I don't know what to do, guys. Your help would be very, very appreciated. The level of appreciation that you will receive is unprecedented. Thank you.
EDIT: Since you guys also don't seem to look down on Rockbox here, I suppose I'll feel free to add that I am a proud user of Rockbox. Unfortunately, the same behavior occurs both in Rockbox and Apple OS.

I would suggest calibrating the battery in your iBook, since it is the iBook's interaction with the battery which enables the accuracy of the battery indicator.
If the battery indicator remains inaccurate after calibration in your iBook, then I would wonder if you have received a faulty battery.

  • Ipod Touch 4G Camera... Getting sick of this

Sorry if I sound a bit rude... I'm just completely frustrated with trying to get this thing fixed...
Alright. I've asked this on various sites, and i'm constantly getting sick of the fact that no one will answer, or tells me the exact same thing, to restore the Ipod to Factory Settings, or Power it off for a while. None of it works...
I've had my Ipod Touch 4G since the end of Summer, because my old one died out, and for a month or so, the Camera / Video Camera worked fine. After a month ( and it still continues now ) the camera doesn't work anymore...
If I click on Camera, it won't open up, it'll stay frozen, and the bottom will flicker.
I've seen MULTIPLE threads on various sites about this issue, and no one gives an answer that helps at all. Restoring the Ipod, or powering it off, doesn't work. Period.
Can someone please give me an answer here as to how I can fix the camera, and get it to open ( Also, I bought various apps to see if they would work, they don't. )

If multiple apps don't work with the camera, chances are it's a hardware issue, which means nothing you can fix yourself. Since you said you just bought it this Summer, it should still be under warranty so you can have the part replaced at the Apple Store.

  • Near Dead Ipod - Only shows black screen with apple logo and sick face ipod

I would be very grateful for any help.
I bought my 60GB ipod in the summer of 2005, whatever generation that makes it. Until recently it's been a little glitchy - sometimes the screen would appear to be functioning normally, but songs would not play. For example track 1 would look like it was about to play, then skip to track 2, then 3, and so forth. I had to force restart it regularly.
Today I connected my ipod to my macbook and itunes appeared to start (bounced in the dashboard) then failed to launch. The ipod screen looked as though it was connected (flashing red sign) but did not mount on screen. I tried to force quit itunes, but that didn't work and the computer froze. I did a force restart of the computer with the ipod plugged in, and it took very long to restart. The whole time, the ipod screen continued to flash the red sign. I unplugged the ipod and force restarted it.
Now, when I press menu, the black screen comes up with the apple logo, then periodically switches to a screen with an ipod with a sick face and "www.apple.com/support/ipod listed under it. I can hear a clicking sound when I hold it up to my ear.
I've got 40 gigs of music on it and I'd very much like to get that off since much of it is not backed up. Am I screwed?

    Likely a hard drive failure
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote
