Help stuck in utilities

Did you select a drive from the left window pane first?
If yes,  testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
To continue with support it would be helpful to post the results from EtreCheck here. EtreCheck will display the important details of your system configuration and highlight old files you still might have around that will affect your Mac.

• I have the iPad 2 (verizon). The lock rotation is always on (can't change it) and NONE of the sound effects work.

Since yesterday evening, the lock rotation icon is stuck on, and none of the sound effects work. I have factory restored and restored from a backup twice, same result. And I'v checked the headphone jack.
Am I missing something?
THNX

Assuming that you havn't turned the volume completely down, then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar (and similarly for rotation lock) : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

If you tried here and still have the problem it is time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. It is a hardware problem.

• RE: Installed "Access Denied" posting. I have same problem and none of the answers have worked. Ownership is blank but application will not accept me.

RE: "Access Denied" question following install of Firefox. I have same problem. Details follow: I tried opening in Safe Mode which did not work. I have Administrative access. When I click the general tab in properties I get a message that "firefox.exe" does not exist. Neither that file nor any other "install" type of file appears in the Mozilla Firefox directory except for "uninstall". I have downloaded and tried to install seven times from six different sources, including Mozilla, all with the same results. I've also tried a number of solutions from the web for this error message with no greater success. I tried, first, doing an upgrade then deleted the older version of Firefox and have done "install" since. Avast, Malwarebytes and Threatfire have found no malware.
I have never had a similar problem with Firefox before and I've used it for years. Anyone have any ideas I haven't already tried? I'm tired of using Internet Explorer! RE: troubleshooting information below--Windown will not open the downloaded file.

These steps are recommended for this error message mentioned:
Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes, however it seems like you may need to reinstall Firefox since the directory cannot be found.
Other solutions to this have been to uninstall and use CCleaner to clean up any old registries. However this will loose data from the profile.
I am seeing the errors and troubleshooting steps all mentioned here:
*
And it seems the best bet would be to uninstall and reinstall. If you can see the profile folder, it is possible to make a back up of the profile Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles here.
For a clean reinstall:
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

• Since upgrading to V4 all my bookmarks are missing and none of the posted 'fixes' work for me. What do I do now?

Since upgrading to v4 it seems that all of my bookmarks have not been copied across. I've tried the fixes posted to restore them but they don't work for me. I can find the bookmarks folder in Windows but it won't import.
My system is running Win XP SP3 with Pentium dual core processor with 1 Gb of RAM.

Sorry, cor-el, but none of the suggestions worked. I tried deleting the more recent backups created by Firefox so that it would re-build the bookmarks from an earlier backup, but even this failed.
I'm going to try uninstalling Firefox 4 altogether then re-installing after first saving the last 'good' version of my bookmarks back-ups somewhere safe and replacing them later. I'll let you know how it goes.
If this doesn't work and unless someone can come up with a fix, I have to reconcile myself to the prospect that this latest version has trashed my bookmarks never to return - much to my disappointment and disgust. Firefox has never done this before and for me it has 'lost its edge' as a preferred brower.

• My iPod nano, 6th generation, will not stop playing and none of the buttons will work

I listen to audiobooks.  My iPod was fine, I just checked how far I was in this chapter.  I checked again 2 minutes later and I cannot get the screen to lite up nor can I control the volume.  But my book continues to play.  I plugged it in to charge with a wall charger, nothing.  I plugged into my computer and again nothing.
It is only 3 weeks old, I use it about between 1-3 hours a day.
Anyone else have this problem?

Have you tried resetting it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

• I installed Office:mac 2011 on my new iMac running 10.8.3 and discovoed my file transfer from my old macbook installed Office:mac 2088. Now I have both installed and none of the office apps work - I keep getting the same error message

I recently purchased an iMac to replace my 2008 macbook.
I used migration assitant to transfer all of my macbook files to the iMac. I noticed that I had the old 2008 version of Office:mac 2008 on the iMac and decided to install Office:mac 2011 which installed successfully.
However, now I can't open excel or word or powwerpoint now using either 2008 or 2011.... I just get an error message saying there was an error and the app had to close. It offers to send a report to Microsoft.
I tried moving Office:mac 2008 to trash but this didn't resolve the issue.
Can anyone help (I am not a really sohpisticated user so be gentle)
Thanks Dave

Hello Dave,
This forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Microsoft Office in any way. I suggest you post Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products.

Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Or SuperDuper...
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

• Why did I get three sets of the log in installation info? and none of the pass codes work?

I bought a brand new iMac in June so I qualified for the free upgrade. AFter I submitted my info I received three sets of the emails that are supposed to allow me to download and install. Howver, when I clickon them and try to use the log in and pass code information, the codes are too long and the files won't read them. Any info on this situation? I emailed the help support directly but have not heard

already tried that too I even went to the Apple store and asked about it and they said they heard people had similar problems but have not heard of a resolution......

In 'mail', after importing mailboxes the process gets stuck on '1619 of 72826' and 'time remaining' climbs infinitely. Please suggest a solution.
I converted my mail boxes from POP to imap for the purpose of syncing all my devices. I backed up my mail boxes and further more perfomed a timemachine backup.
Upon restoring ther mailboxes, either by manually copying them to the mailboxes folder, and restoring a timemachine backup, both pocesses result in the above problem.
Please recomend a solution.

• Tecra A8 downgraded to XP and none of the Toshiba utilities work

HI all,
I just got a new Tecra A8 - it is downgraded to XP and none of the Toshiba utilities work (power saver, function keeys, hot keys etc). When I try to reinstall them - there is always an error message (missing dll, or sth similar) - I tried to updated the bios - couldn't - again missing a file!
any ideas how to fix this? at least the fn buttons (fn button works - I can see a light coming on when I press - not the functions though!)
your help i greatly appreciated!
cheers,
Dimitris

Hi Darlac ... - well - I have a Tecra A8 - PTA8XXX series, and it also came with Vista on board.... This of course was useless - as none of the technical systems - I will be using - work with Vista, I had to downgrade to XP SP2 ...
Apparently - Microsoft have a document that allows this legally!! besides that I was told it was illegal... Anyhow - what I did - was locate an XP2 - and then I had to start the search for the drivers... - This took a few days - but eventually found them on the Toshiba-Europe.com ... website in the drivers section ... about 400 megs of data I copied off the network...
(so now I hopefully had the drivers)... and in one of these little files - i downloaded is an instruction - on how to do all this marvelous stuff...SO - you have a lot of work to do... believe me - I am still busy with it... and what I want now - is the program called "Recovery Disc Creator" - which we really need - as I believe that this helps you make up a recovery CD-ROM of all the files that you need to put onto the Tecra ...
When I first started - I was too quick to load some utilities and hoped that they would work... but alas - I was very down hearted, and so as normal - i said to hell with everything - JUST DO IT ... and got down to 'brass tacks' - and now I must say that last evening 27-5-2007 - quite all of a sudden - most of the utilities are actually working...
(I must say that altogether - I think I have downloaded about 800 megs of files, and utilites from various sites ... and have used some of this and some of that - but the Toshiba-Europe.com site - in the drivers section - really sparks - as you select which machine you have - and away you go... Even my son - is surprised at how far I have taken this Tecra - on XP SP2 ... he is quite amazed - as some of the utilities do not even work on his notebook
Okay - well - now you can mail me if you like - [email protected] - and I will help you more, if I can .. and maybe anyone else reading this post - that has this mystery "Recovery Disc Creator" program - I would love to install it - it also apparently travels with something called "Recovery Disc Launcher" - whatever that is... but I hope that as I imagine it - that this utility - allows me to make my own recovery DVD, or set of CD's ...so that just in case something goes wrong.
I can hopefully then use it to recreate my hard drive...
Okay - hope you get it right... read that list - do each and most of all the things that they require, step by step - in turn...
Kindest Regards

• So I made a new account on my computer for my sister, and none of the music that I put on the computer from CD's i no longer have aren't on there, The purchansed ones are on there.

So I made a new account on my computer for my sister, she had a lot of music on her ipod, i opened itunes for her and none of the music that I put on the computer from CD's, That I no longer have, are on there, The purchansed ones are on there though. But when i go back and log onto my account all of the music's there. Please help me.

For music that you've purchased from Apple that are on your iPhone you should be able to copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. Also if you are in the US then you should be able to re-download past music purchases for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work
