Use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to back your entire system up to an external drive.

If I upgrade to Yosemite, will I lose access to Entourage?  I use Entourage for my emails, and am comfortable with it.  Thank you!

You may if you switch to Outlook. It is the component with which there is a problem in Yosemite.

If I install VM Fusion or Parallels, does Windows run all the time? How does that affect computer performance? and how much do I need to worry about hard drive corruption?
Current versions of Fusion and Parallels are compatible with Yosemite. Both are applications which you only run when you want to run Windows within them. As such, there's no effect on computer performance when they're not in use. Like any other software, there is some additional load on your Mac when both Windows and the Mac OS are running together, but any noticeable effect depends on what each is being expected to do and what resources (e.g. available RAM and the number of CPU cores) you can devote to each.
I think there's less chance of HD corruption with a VM than there is with running Windows natively on the Mac in Boot Camp. Consider that, with a VM, you can create Snapshots of the state of your VM at a given time, and then, if something goes wrong (virus, malware, software installations), you can simply restore the Snapshot in a matter of seconds and eliminate the problems in the process. Moreover you can make a backup copy of the entire VM file, and replace a later version if you wish. Also consider that you can assign, say, 100GB of HD space to the VM, but the actual space devoted to the VM is only what's actually used; as more is needed, more is made available and Windows can't tell the difference. So, for example, my Win 7 Pro VM has an 80 GB virtual HD but only takes up 45 GB on my SSD, and that's with XP Mode in VPC installed inside it.
Microsoft no longer supports XP, though virus signature updates are still being issued. But MS has installed a pop-up message about EOL that won't go away (it's installed with KB2934207). Even if you remove that KB in Add and Remove Software, the pop-up continues. But if you have a Snapshot or a backup which is prior to it's original installation, you can skip installing KB2934207, and suppress it's reappearance on a Software Update list.

  • Thinking of upgrading to Yosemite -  but want to be able to downgrade to mountain lion - How?

Thinking of upgrading to Yosemite -  but want to be able to downgrade to mountain lion - How?
    Hi all.
I am wondering if I upgrade to Yosemite is there a way that I will be able to downgrade / revert back to mountain lion if I find out that too many of my most essential applications  are no longer working?
I have read there have been compatibility issues  between some of my most necessary / favourite applications I use in mountain lion and Mavericks,  which is why I never upgraded to Mavericks.
However , I am noticing in the app store there are a lot of apps I am interested in which I no longer able to purchase / download because they require Yosemite, and mountain lion is out-dated.
However, if I upgrade my OS, I am afraid of incompatibility with the most important apps in my workflow though.
    Thanks.

Hi Arthur thank you very much for your response.
    Sorry for my late reply.
My following question is summed up in the last sentence of this post.
[is only one time machine backup possible per external backup hard drive? Or can I make separate Time Machine backups for separate purposes?]
I went ahead and installed Yosemite.
There are some things I like about Yosemite and I might trial it for a little bit longer,
but after a couple of days of trials and trying out, I've decided that I think I generally prefer mountain lion better,
and I will reinstall it , and get a disk image of Yosemite and run that as a Virtual Machine when I need it.
[^ This is what I should have done in the first place.]
Before I installed Yosemite I [stupidly] used Time machine to back up only my application folders / application support / general system files,
[I used system preferences to exclude everything else in the TM backup] so that I would not have to reinstall my applications / essential system structures.
I did not back up the rest of my files and folders / whole machine though.
    I should have done this.
I just didn't want to wait for about 800 gb of data to transfer [impatient].
[in retrospect I should have run Yosemite through a virtual machine within Mountain Lion to see if I liked it before installing it completely].
With Yosemite installed would I be able to make a SEPARATE time machine backup of all my files / documents / media folders in Time Machine on Yosemite, and use this to re-install these on Mountain lion if I downgrade ?
Or is only one time machine backup possible per external backup hard drive ?
    Thanks.

    Hi Xoan Essex,
The Safari browser in Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) does include the Reading List feature. See this article -

  • If i upgrade to maverick will i lose my microsoft word and excel for apple

If I upgrade to maverick will I lose my installed Office Word and Excel for Mac

You shouldn't, but it would be a really good idea to make a clone of your existing installation using Carbon Copy Cloner before upgrading. That way if you have any issues with Mavericks it's very easy to go back. Without the clone it's a lot more difficult.

No, but that does not mean that you should not backup first, unless you like taking chances that is.

  • If I upgrade to this will I lose everything on my computer that is saved?

if I upgrade to this will I lose everything on my computer that is saved?

Since you are posting on the Snow Leopard forum I will assume you are asking about an "upgrade" to SL form Tiger or Leopard.  The answer is no.  Upgrading does not erase apps, data, docs etc.
That being said, it is always good practice to back up your files before doing an upgrade.  Better safe than sorry.  External hard drives are dirt cheap.

  • Thinking of upgrading to Yosemite?

Was wondering if anyone is having an major problems since they upgraded to Yosemite?  Like other companies not upgrading their software to match Yosemite.
I was holding off to upgrade because in previous times I upgraded right away and other companies didn't catch up fast enough.
    Thanks.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

  • If i update to yosemite, will any of my garageband and i-tunes be affected in any way?

will any of my music stored in garageband and i-tunes be affected if i upgrade to Yosemite.  Also is there another way to have  back up storage for all the tunes (90) in garageband and i-tunes(playlists, etc) in case my mac book pro crashes or gets a virus?  i am a solo player/singer and use the pro with my keyboard.  i have backed up all songs on cd's, but i need another back-up to bring on the gigs in case something happens.  thanks- any help would be appreciated.

That are many questions in one.
Which version of GarageBand are you using? GarageBand 10.0 and GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5 are continuing to work with Yosemite, but I would not guarantee, that you will not encounter a few problems.
The first thing to check would be, if the drivers for your USB keyboard are supported. If they are, fine.
If you do not need to upgrade right now, wait a bit. There may be problems with the CoreAudio in Yosemite.
Which kind of Mac do you have? I am using two MacBook Pro 17", early and late 2011, and two newer iMacs. After the latest Yosemite update none of the Macs can record a clean vocal signal any longer in GarageBand 10.0.3  or Logic Pro X, neither using myMicrophone connected to Line-in nor simply the internal microphone. There is always an added, low frequency buzzing overplayed to the recording.
Other problems reported here have been a huge  latency.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite now I cannot open PSD files on illustrator. Please help

I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my Mac and now when I open Illustrator I cannot open psd files. The error message I get when I open illustrator is "Error Loading Plugins. PhotoshopImport.aip"
Is there a fix for this? I cannot afford to upgrade my CS4 at this time.
    Thanks.

Thanks Larry - the issue is that I need to keep all of the layers (there are a lot of them) and when I save as pdf it flattens the image. Is there no way to be able to open PSD files now that I upgraded to Yosemite?
    Thanks again.

  • HT5429 I like the GPS Map APP presently on my iPad2.  If I upgrade to IOS6 will I lose the current APP?

I have an IPad2 and have been very happy using Google maps and the asssociated navigation.  I also use Golfshot which relies on the embedded GPS.  Will I lose all that with the latest software upgrade?  Or can I have both?

Google map app has been replaced by Apple Maps in iOS 6.
I haven't updated my iPad 2 yet. iOS 6 doesn't add much for iPad 2.

  • Will i lose all my files if i download this?

Will i lose my files if i download this application?

By default, Mountain Lion will install on your computer without erasing anything but the old OS. It will not erase any of your data or applications. (If the installer finds known incompatible programs it will place them in a folder marked incompatible.)
However it is very unwise to procede with an OS upgrade without first backing up the computer. This is inherently one of the most dangerous things you can do and if, for example, you lost electricity in the midst of the upgrade the result could include lost files. So backup the computer before installing the upgrade.

  • If I uninstall iTunes and reinstall it, will I lose my music files?

    Hi
My Ipod touch (2nd Gen) is not being recognised in itunes. I have gone through the ipod touch assistant, and this has made no difference.
Next try is to uninstall itunes and re-install it. However...will I lose my music library when I do this?
I am also having problems with my external back-up drive which has now stopped me opening it up (I have had it for a year), as it says "I don't have permission to see it's contents" and "files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read-only" - so I am loathe to uninstall itunes if I lose all my music etc....
    Thanks for your help
    Simon

You will not lose any music..
However, you do have a current backup of the iTunes folder and all other important info on your hard drive, correct?
