What is "Adobe XI" - Reader, or Acrobat?
But either way, 'Save as Adobe PDF' is a Word function, independent of what Adobe software you have installed.

  • Best free Word Processor that's compatible with Microsoft Word?

hey guys, i'm looking at moving over to the Mac in a couple days and i just need to know the best free Word Processor that can open .doc files. 99% of my docs made in Word are of the 97-2003 variety and not 2007's .docx.
    appreciate any  help.
    thanks

Well, in terms of best, it might be argued the best would be MS Word for Mac (MS Office for Mac 2011) as it uses the same native format as the window's version of office.
Others that are compatible include Apple's own Pages - http://www.apple.com/apps/pages/
Then there are the free offerings, like openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ and others.
I do not honestly know if there is one single "best" as there are so many possible specific features and formating oddities in MS Word that it is impossible to say that any one otherwise generally MS-Word-compatible program is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your specific documents.

  • How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

It all depends on what I need to use the document for.
When I need to create a text document that I need to share at work I use OnLive Desktop.  This gives me a Windows 7 Desktop with Office 2010 apps on it that I can connect to DropBox. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/onlive-desktop/id490292278?mt=8 or CloudOn https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudon/id474025452?mt=8. You have to be connected to a FAST wifi network to use this option.
If I need to create a Word doc on the go I use QuickOffice Pro. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickoffice-pro-hd-edit-office/id376212724?mt=8
    Connects to DropBox.
If I just need to create a formatted text document, think Word document, I use Pages.  It is easy to use on the iPad, because it was designed for it from the start and it now supports TrackChanges. But it does Track Changes a bit clumsy.   https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id361309726?mt=8
Connects to iCloud and you can open in Pages from DropBox.
If I just need a plain text document, I use PlainText.  Connects to DropBox and is easy to use.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plaintext-dropbox-text-editing/id391254385?mt=8
There are lots of options out there, it just depends on what you need to do the most.

  • Pages Documents Always Open with Microsoft Word???

I have two word processing applications installed on my computer:
    Microsoft Word (12.24)
    Pages (4.04)
For whatever reason, documents in .pages always want to open using Microsoft Word.
I have tried everything to change this, including Get Info> Open With > Pages > Change All. At first this appears to work, displaying a (default) after pages in the drop-down box. However, when I next attempt to open the document, the document automatically opens in Microsoft Word. When I again check get info, Pages still has the (default) setting, but Microsoft Word is selected in the open with.
I can change individual documents to open with .pages (by selecting pages in the dropdown box), but this only works with the single document and is thus extremely impractical.
Can you think of how to solve this problem?

That is a (drop down) menu.
Try *Repair Disk Permissions* with *Disk Utility* and rebooting.
Something has appeared to been hashed.
Have you by any chance moved the Pages appliaction from out of the iWork folder in the Applications folder?
Also have you updated Pages to the latest version and updated your system using the Combo (downloaded) version of OSX Updater (not the one from System Preferences > Software Update).

  • I am trying to import bookmarks from google account. Your drop down menu does not have the "import" option. How can I do this?

Your instructions for importing bookmarks/favorites are to click the top left Firefox button and select "import" to start the process. I don't have that option, there is not "import" in the drop down menu. How can I import bookmarks into Firefox?

You will still find it in the File menu in the Firefox 5 version that you are using.<br />
If Firefox 7 is has been moved to the Bookmarks Manager.
Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily if the Menu Bar is hidden.
If you managed the bookmarks via the Google toolbar on the Google server then see:

  • Best word processing app for i-mac?

As a 'newie' to the wonderful world of i-mac's can anyone recommend a good word processing app. Currently going round and round in circles trying to find one thats compatible with i-mac. Don't want to go down the Microsoft word option due to compatability issues.

Word is not that incompatible.   But I do recommend looking at this listing of alternative products:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6941
    and this list:
    http://www.roaringapps.com/
The real problem people face with Word are font conflicts with some applications, macros that can cause files to misbehave, and using a version that hasn't been updated for their operating system.  Version 2008 and 2011 are able to run on the latest operating systems, though some people have mentioned the installers have trouble on version 2008 on Mac OS X 10.7 and later.

  • Best word processing app without a sync feature?

Hi there.  My Grandpa received an iPad for his birthday for use while working on the job.  Here is an explanation of the situation:
My Grandpa goes into paper mills and checks their machinery to make sure they are working properly.  His traditional way to document this was by hand, writing out data into a checklist every week.  Then, my Grandma would later re-type all of this data into Microsoft Word documents their computer.  We figured the iPad could help save my grandparents a lot of time if used in place of this system. For one, files could be transferred over to their computer from the iPad, eliminating the need for entering the data by hand into the computer.  Second, instead of rewriting out a new checklist every week, my Grandpa could simply open, edit, and re-save the file from the previous week while on the job, since much of the data rarely ever changes.
We eventually got a system set up but we have had a few difficulties in the process.  Since the iPad doesn't support an actual Microsoft Word app, we knew we had to find another app that could open and save Word files.  We first tried iWork Pages for iPad.  The problem with this app is that files can't be saved by hand.  They are automatically saved by Pages.  This eliminated the use of the 'save as' option, where my Grandpa could edit a previous file and 'save as' with a new name.  Pages also had trouble formatting documents previously made on my grandparents' PC.  By the time the documents were transferred back to the computer, the formatting was messed up and it was not worth spending the time to correct this problem.  Their current app is Documents To Go, which has worked a lot better.  There is both a 'save' and 'save as' option, and document formatting is kept the same on both the computer and the iPad.  However, we've run into one main problem with Documents To Go, and that is the Syncing feature.
I've never been a big fan of syncing myself, simply because it's really easy to make a mistake and not be able to fix it.  It is 'convenient', but you have very little control the process.  I much prefer a drag and drop process because it allows you to know exactly what's going on during your file transfer because everything is being done by hand.  Syncing works fine if you know how to use it.  Unfortunately, my Grandpa is not a very tech savvy person, but he was more than willing to learn the basics of the iPad if it could help him with his work.  The main thing he has trouble with in word processing is the difference between 'save' and 'save as'.  Since he is always opening up files from previous weeks to edit them and save them as a new file, it is critical that he uses 'save as' in order to give the document a new name.  However, sometimes he forgets, and clicks 'save' instead.  This overwrites the old file on the iPad.  This would not be that big of a deal, except for the sync feature.  Since my Grandma always syncs the documents each time my Grandpa comes home from work, the new files are synced to the computer.  However, since the sync is a two-way system, any changes made on the iPad are transferred to the corresponding document on the computer.  So if my Grandpa accidentally hits 'save' instead of 'save as' on the iPad and overwrites the previous week's data, the corresponding file with the same name is also overwritten on the computer, and therefore, all data from the previous week is lost.  This would not be so with a drag and drop system, where a pop-up would notify my Grandma that two files have the same name, and she could rename the newest one accordingly, without losing any data.
So basically, I need to find a word processing app that uses a drag and drop system rather than a syncing system in order to simplify the process for my grandparents.  The app also needs to be capable of keeping the document formatting the same in the transfer process, as well as have 'save' and 'save as' options.  I know there are other apps out there, but there no trial versions, which means to test each one out, we have to purchase them, and we have gone through two purchased apps already.
If anyone out there has any advice on what we should do, we would very much appreciate your help on this issue.  Thank you.

  • What word processing app can I use for an old mac (2007)

I have just bought a MacBook Pro with no word processing app. When I visited the Apple store I was informed that the OS was out of date for Pages 5. Being new to Apple I am at a loss as to what to do. I would rather listen to some seasoned heads!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
New Macs come with the iWork applications for free, including Pages, which is a word processing application.
To install it, you have to open the Mac App Store. You can find it in the Dock (at the bottom of the display) with this icon:
Then, at the top of the App Store window, choose Purchases, and you should see three apps waiting to be accepted: Keynote, Pages and Numbers. Accept all of them and they will be downloaded and installed.
If you do not see them listed there, see > http://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/mac/up-to-date/

  • I am looking for a word processing app

I am looking for a word processing app that I can use for sending .doc and .docx format papers via email or uploading them to websites directly from my ipad 2 without having to export them to or sync them with my actual computer.  Does the Pages app allow users to do this?  I need to make a purchase of such an app soon.  If this app is incapable of these actions, can anyone suggest an app or design an app for me that does them?

Pages can export documents in MS Word format. When I last did this (with Pages '09, the Mac version), the result was a .doc file.
Note that this is a translation, and like most translations, it's not always a perfect one. Some features of Pages are not supported in MS Word, and some Word features are not supported in Pages.
For a more precise answer wrt Pages for iOS, you should repost your question in the iWork For iOS community. The link will take you there.
    Regards,
    Barry

what word processing program should I use with my Mac?

For free you can download NeoOffice
Not quite. Downloading the current version of NeoOffice is definitely not free (downloading the previous version is). The developers of NeoOffice (the most Mac-like of the StarOffice descendants) make a distinction between the application itself (which is free) and downloading it, for which they require what they are pleased to call a "donation" (since it's mandatory, I would call it a fee).

Indeed. For basic WP tasks, TextEdit can be quite satisfactory.

I only need it for reports
Would that include the report on the state of the US economy -- you know, the one President Obama asked you to deliver to the White House no later than 7AM on January 4? The one in two columns, with numbered paragraphs, table of contents, footnotes, mathematical formulae, 40 figures, 60 charts, quotations in Arabic, Japanese, and classical Greek, and 15 pages of references in APA style?
Grant Bennet-Alder is right -- "the real answer depends on what work you expect to do with it, and with whom you expect to do this work". There are dozens of word processors for Mac, from the venerable Word to the no less venerable Tex-Edit+. It would pointless to start listing them all, when many of them might be either too little or too much for your needs.
