I'm trying to move some files off my old PCI PowerMac.

But I've discovered that every time I try to copy to or from the flash drive, the system hangs on Mac OS 9.1 (the last officially supported version for this Mac) and I have to reboot, which is getting me nowhere.
I can't network two Macs together; I have no external drive I can connect to the other Mac, and I can't email files to myself. Any solutions, or am I screwed?

Have you tried copying the files in very small batches? Sometimes a slow connection (and USB 1.1 is very slow) can choke on a large-size copy process, whether the individual files are large or the group is large.
Yup, I tried even 1 file and it causes the whole system to freeze, requiring a restart. However, I did find a non-intuitive and puzzling solution:
1. On the Mac you want to transfer files from, install Stuffit if you don't already have it, and even if you do, launch it and set the Preferences for the Destination of unarchived files to be 'Ask'.
2. Use Stuffit to compress your files in either .sit or .sea format on the hard drive of the Mac you want to transfer the files from.
3. Once the compression is complete, double-click the .sit or .sea file and choose the USB flash drive as the destination; it should decompress and copy the file(s) or folder of files to the flash drive with no problem. Repeat the process for each file or group of files you want to transfer.
As for why this works, I can't explain it, but it does, so that's one less thing to cause anyone to throw their computer off the top of a building.

  • I lost a folder, with all the pictures, while trying to move some photos to a diferent folder (both folders disappeared)

    I was trying to move some pictures from a folder to another, but all the pictures disappeared! Even the folder that the pictures were! I searched all my computer but I can't find them! Does anyone know what can I do??
    Before I lost all pictures a message appeared asking if I wanted to replace the photos that have the same name, and I said "yes" and "do this to all"; after that a message appeared saying that there was an error and the pictures were note moved, but all my files disapeared!!
    I search even the trash (it is empty) and don't know whatelse to do!
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    First of all, we'd need to know what version of Bridge, Photoshop and the OS you are using.
    One of the earliest versions of Bridge was indeed known occasionally to disappear files and/or folders, but that was a long time ago, in CS2 I believe.  Later versions do not do that.
    Do a search for the names of the files and or folder(s), not with the pretty useless Spotlight or the Finder Search (which uses the same, limited Spotlight search engine).  Instead, try the free EasyFind.  http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
    Second, I'll assume you mean folder when you type "a file with all my photos in it". Unless you put the folder in the trash and then deliberately emptied the trash, it's more likely you just accidentally stuck the folder inside another one, or accidentally renamed it.  EasyFind will find it or its contents.
    If EasyFind fails to find a trace of any of the files or of the folder, then the files are indeed gone. but that 's highly unlikely unless you deliberately empied the trash.
    Good luck.

    I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

    No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

    If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
    All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
    Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
    If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
    On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
    Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

    Yes, you could, because in this case you would have something like a backup in the cloud. BTW, personally I also like Flickr. Flickr offers you 1 TB (1000 GB) of free storage and automatic upload for photos since iOS 7 (it is a very attractive offer, at least for me)

  • I was trying to move some of my iPhotos to a CD.  It didn't work and now my computer is stuck giving me a message that there is a burn in progress.  I cannot get out of iPhoto or any other site due to this message.  What should I do?

    I was trying to move some of my iphotos to a CD.  I don't know what happened, but when I try to sign out of iphoto I get a message saying "there is a burn in progress" and it will not let me shut down my computer or get out of the iphoto site.

    A better way is to select the photos in iPhoto and export to a desk top folder, right click on it and burn to disk

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I am trying to move a file via ftp

    I am trying to move a file from my local share drive on my computer to another server via ftp protocol. I can log into the server and get acknowledgments after entering my user name and password. The problem lies when trying to send my file. I am getting an error which states unexpected command. I am trying to use the "put" command. This works in a dos window but the ni visa is giving this error not the server itself I believe. It occurs with the last write/read statement. I am attaching my vi. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    VISA supports TCP/IP but it doesn't support FTP afaik. NI sells an Internet Toolkit with FTP functions or you could use System Exec to run the DOS command. That's what I do for tftp transfers.

  • How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

    How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

    The new mini has a Firewire 800 port. Likely the PPC version only has Firewire 400.  The OP will need a converter cable which is why I was asking first about what hardware is available and how much is being copied.
    Probably go with using the external hard drive if you decide all you want are data files.

    You will need to use an external DVD drive to run the disc installer that came you your machine. You can also do it with another Mac using the Remote Install Max OS X app. Finely, if you have access to another computer, you could burn the install image on a USB thumb drive, boot from that, erase the drive and run the installer.

  • Error while trying to move a file from a folder to another

    Hi,
    I have created an application that processes files. When a file is processed, the application moves it to another subfolder.
    I am working on Netweaver Developer Studio 7.2. The application is a standard DC Web Dynpro.
    The code used to move the file is the following:
    File destFolder = new File(destinationFolder);
    if (!destFolder.exists())
         repCible.mkdirs();
    if (destFolder.exists()) {
         File fileToMove = new File(parentFolder + "\" + fileName);
         boolean isFileMoved = fileToMove.renameTo(new File(
                   destinationFolder + "\" + fileName));
         disp("Etat du déplacement du fichier: " + isFileMoved);
    The code is surrounded with a try catch to catch any SecurityException or NullPointerException. None of these exception is caught, and the isFileMoved boolean always return false.
    When the destination folder does not exist, it is created but the file isn't moved. Since the files and folders are situated in a network folder, I have tried to implement the exact same code in a stand alone Java application (not WDPJ). The code works fine. What is wrong with my Web Dynpro DC ? Any thoughts ?
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Thibault

    Problem solved: I used the Scanner to extract data from the files and forgot to close the scanner.
    As a result, the file was still processed by thread and could not be deleted or moved !!

  • A PDF file was filed in documents. when trying to move this file to trash i got response : operation can't be completed because the itempdf is in usen

    A PDF file was filed in DOCUMENTS, when trying to move this PDF file to trash I got the response: "Operation can't be completed because the item ..... is in use".
    How do I get this document deleted from the system?

    The suggestion to move items from documetns to desktop and then moving to trash is the one that worked.
    I have now one other question and that is that during my strugle with the original problem I called with Apple helpline and there they suggested to move the application "Preview" to trash and then the  issue would be solved. I did so but clearly the issue was not solved.
    Bottom line is that with your solution I got rid of the PDF files, but I still need to reinstall the Preview application. Do you have suggestions how to do that??
