I'm trying to record a track on Garageband

I'm using M-Audio's Fast Track Pro as my interface. For some reason I cannot get the recording level to go up on the channel. I can see a feint signal in the middle of the screen. So my audio card must be working. However I can't hear anything. I tested two different microphones and had the same problem with both of them.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes that's right. I've had success recording with it in the past.
I did chose Fast Track as both the input and output sources.
I'm listening back through headphones.
It's a bit baffling. I was able to record something today through the internal mic but having no luck
going through my much better mic and the Fast Track.
Thanks for the thoughts. Do you have any other suggestions to troubleshoot?

  • Trying to record multiple tracks (24) in Garageband with 3 presonus firestudio devices daisy-chained together.

Please help !! I can record multiple tracks (8) on a single presonus firestudio, but now I'm trying to expand the number of tracks to 24 by daisy-chaining three firestudio devices.
The three units will sync up properly, and Garageband detects all of the input channels, but the recording doesn't pick up the input signals for the 2nd or 3rd device. It only picks up the signals from the first device. I read the manual and daisy-chained the devices by serial number (lowest to highest).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

you'll need to create an aggregate device:

  • Trying to record multiple tracks at once with Mixer (Two Microphones)

I have a Alesis Multimix 4, and two microphones plugged into the mic 1 and mic two inputs.  I am trying to record both, at the same time, to two distinct tracks.  I set Device Class to ASIO in the Audio Hardware section, and delected ASIO4ALL v2 for the Device.  My mixer (I assume) is showing up as USB Aduio CODEC in the ASIO4ALL settings.  When I go back to my multitrack setting, I am given four options for incoming audio:
    Audio Front Mic Input 1
    Audio Front Mic Input 2
    USB Audio CODEC 1
    USB Audio Codec 2
No matter what combination I try, when I record, both tracks pick up both microphones.  My goal is to isolate both, so I can apply different settings to both tracks later on, adjust in the mix etc...   The audio only comes through when I pick the USB Audio option.  Thanks in advance.

I think you've got the right driver selected, otherwise it wouln't work at all. The single most obvious thing to ask you though (I'm sorry if this is too basic) is where you have the pan controls set to? To get each mic to record on a single channel, you'd have to have one panned hard left and the other panned hard right. If you leave them both panned dead centre, that's exactly what you get - both mics on both channels.

  • 'disk too slow' problems when trying to record ONE TRACK on my ibook.

okay- help guys. my new ibook freezes after not even a minute of one track live recording and i ge the disk too slow error. i'm using a basic m-audio usb interface with the internal (4200 rpm) hard drive. i know this isn't a fast hard drive, but SURELY. one track? i've been in touch with m audio, reinstalled driver, repaired hard disk permissions. still no good. i only ever need to record two live tracks at a time, but then i do need to stack them up a bit. is my ibook really incapable of that? i'm shocked if it is. anyone want to buy an ibook?
any advice much appreciated as i'm going out of my mind.
    happy christmas,

    Adam:
You haven't given a lot of info, but here are a couple of ideas:
    1) What sample rate are you using? You should be at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Don't even think of anything higher.
    2) Are you recording in a new arrange window? Or are you overdubbing to existing tracks? If so, freeze all your existing tracks.
    3) Are you attempting to use any plugins while you're recording? If you are, turn them off for now.
    4) How much RAM do you have installed? You need at least 768 MB; more preferably.
    5) You're going to need an external drive eventually, but to record one track should be easily done.

  • What's the best way of recording drum tracks onto garageband?

I usually use garageband to record acoustic tracks, but I want to get some drums involved. The drum kit software on garageband isn't great and pretty difficult to use with just the macbook keyboard, should I get some kind of USB keyboard or drum kit software from elsewhere? If there's a good keyboard for this purpose could someone link me up, because I'd also like to involve a bit of piano/synths in my recordings.
I should also mention that I'm a student and am therefore on a pretty tight budget!
    Cheers!

Yes, i suggest you to use a MIDI-Keyboard, even a small one (like my M-AUDIO KeyRig25) is good and fun to use. It's also better to use some specific Audio Plug-Ins which you can use in GB. There are many freewares around.

  • How can I record 2 tracks simultaneously in GarageBand for iOS?

I am trying to record 2 tracks at the same time, one, a line in for my guitar and the other a vocal mic. I am using an Alesis i/o Dock with my iPad Air 2, everything is updated, and everything is plugged in correctly. When I select either track from the multitrack screen, I can see that both work appropriately. However, when I hit the record button, the screen goes from the multitrack view to the track that is 'highlighted' and the record process goes from there. So if the 'amp' (guitar) track is highlighted, the app take me from the view with both on it to the 'guitar amp' selection, showing the head that I selected. Now, in the past, I have recorded 2 tracks at the same time. I still have the original recording showing both tracks and their settings. Even when I try to match the setting (both were on Left Channel, for example) it doesn't work. On my recent attempt to record (the one this question is about) I put the mic track on Right Channel and the line in on Left Channel, and vice versa. I tried putting them both on the same thinking that maybe that's what I did before because the app might not be able to do both Channels at the same time. I tried using the Mic track in stereo and the Line In on Left and tried it on Right; nothing. Has GarageBand taken this feature out on iOS? I do see if I had a Mac there is an 'Enable Multirack Recording' box to check, but I don't see anything like that for iOS... Can anyone help??

in one the YouTube Tutorials, it is not possible in iOS. but hopefully in the later version it should be.

guess what it says java file. So yes i'm sure. Sarcasm. Not the best way to encourage a total stranger to help you. Then there's
Sorry if i wasn't more clear but was that response needed? No it wasn't needed, but I'm not the one asking for help so I have the luxury of not worrying too much about it. It's extremely frustrating trying to drag relevant information out of someone, and makes one less inclined to bother.
Anyways, there's still nothing in this thread that actually explicitly says "there is a file called VolcanoApp.java in the directory where I'm running javac from" and I really can't be bothered banging my head against the wall any longer. You've made a silly mistake, or a false assumption. We all do it from time to time. My advice is, take a break, go for a walk and re-visit this in a while. You'll probably spot the mistake right away.

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

Thanks for responding. Everything seems to work right except for the when I plug into the 737. Ok let me see if I can be more clear. I had this set up done with two representatives of Neumann, and DBox. Here it is I hope this helps. 32 Channel snake (24 Inputs 8 outputs) Channels 1-8 from snake to my Octopre for Drums. From Octropre output quarter inch lines into the Apollo 2, quarter inch input. This is so that the Apollo 2 is taking the drum tracks. Snake Channel 9-12 into Apollo 1 channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 13-16 into Apollo 2 Channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 17 into the 737, output of 737 into Channel 5 of the Apollo 1 quarter inch.
Ok The Dbox. Sum output L&R into channel input 7&8 of Apollo 1. Apollo 1 output channels 1-8 into summing input channel 1-8 of Dbox. Apollo 1 main L&R going to main analog input L&R of Dbox. Spid out to DAW input of Dbox. I have both ADAT of both Apollos connected by optical wire. Also have port 2 of Apollo 1 into port 1 of Apollo 2 connected by Firewire.  Let me know. Hope I got it right. Thanks for responding.

  • Distorted audio when trying to record simple VO tracks

I'm running my Heil PR-40 mic through an Alesis USB output mixer. I have my input settings as USB Audio Codec in my record preference settings. When I monitor through headphones (connected to mixer) my output signal is clean as a bell.
When I playback my recorded VO tracks in Soundtrack, the audio is totally distorted with clicks, pops and whatever - totally unusable. My VU settings during record are actually a bit low, so peaking is not the problem. I have never been successful at getting good mic audio into my Macs. What am I missing?

  • I record multiple tracks (3-5) from real instruments and vocals. I want to send these files to a collaborator to add more tracks to, but Garageband wants to mix these down (which I don't want). How can I send the multiple tracks files to my friend?

I record multiple tracks of real instruments and vocals wth Garage Band. I want to share the file with a collaborator so he can add another instrument or two. I have not found a way to do this without the process mixing down the tracks. I don't want them mixed down like when I send them to Itunes. Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes. I thought I saw a method to do this with software instruments, but how do you do it with real instruments? I've tried every process on the "export" list to try to accomplish this, without success. Thanks for any breakthrough advice on this!

As isteveus said - for large projects uploading to a server would be best.
Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes.
But for completeness's sake , you cou can mail a project, if you ctrl-click the project and use "Compress xxx.band". This will compress the project and create a zip file, that you can mail (if it is not too large). But ask your friend for the maximal file size allowed as a mail attachment.
But whichever method you use to share your project, be sure you include all loops and instruments, if your friend does not have the same JamPacks installed. You can bundle the loops into the project by saving it as an archive. "File > Save as" and check the "Archive Project" option.
If this option should be disabled, you can force it to become active by editing your project slightly. It is only available, if the project needs saving.

  • Track 1 records on Track 2 - how do I stop this happening?

"I  recorded track one (music) in the multi-track. Then when I tried to  record track two as a separate vocal track, I found that it also  recorded the music with it at the same time. This keeps happening!! What  can I do?" Well, you're not alone. If you're using a  standard windows soundcard (essentially, ANY Soundblaster, SBLive or  compatible, Crystal Audio, ESS, Soundmax, or even some other cards from  Turtle Beach) the remedy is in changing the input/output settings in  your Windows Mixer. Here's how...
In any version of Windows up to and including XP (*except Vista, apparently...) that you have: - Double-click on the yellow (or grey) speaker icon located on the lower right hand corner of your screen. - Select Options>Properties. - In the "Adjust Volume for" area, select 'Recording'. - This will show you all the devices you can record from, in the "Show the following volume controls" window. - Make sure all the devices have a check mark in them. - Click on OK. -  At the bottom of each recording device, there is a check box with  "Select" to the right of it. Use this to select the recording device  that you want - if you're recording from Line In, choose LINE. If you're  recording from Mic In, choose MIC, etc. - Make sure the recording Volume is at least half way up. - Minimize the "Recording Control" window. - You are ready to record. Now,  if you still have bleed, it's possible that you've either selected  something like 'WAVE' for your input device, or perhaps 'Mixed Output'  or 'What You Hear'. The latter settings essentially lump ALL audio fed  through the soundcard into Adobe Audition. The 'Wave' setting will do  exactly what is described above - cause the playback track to be  recorded with the overdub track. If you're using a more pro-level  card, chances are it has it's own mixer panel (and thus, is not  controlled by the Windows Mixer). Some cards that have their own  mixers: Midiman/M-Audio (Delta series, Audiophile, etc), Echo (Layla,  Mona, Gina, etc), Aardvark, Lynx, Frontier Designs, MOTU (828, 2408,  etc)...

*Ask on the forum. This was changed after a user comment. Also if you have problems with Windows 7, ask a forum question too. When we get a definitive answer to the W7 issues, they'll be added here.

Hmmm, so it's taking new pics all the time?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for pic problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Logic freezes when trying to record 8th instrument.

Today is the LAST day I have to exchange my new iMac for a better one, and of course today is the first day I've had this problem.
The first section of my project has 7 tracks playing together, and they do so just fine without any problems.
When I moved onto the second section, I only needed to record one track with no other tracks playing at the same time. Regardless, the instant I hit the first note, Logic locked up and only played a scratchy electric sound non-stop, while the numbers 1,2,and 3 next to my first three tracks flash with a box.
I tried freezing all of the other tracks, so it only focuses on the one I am recording, but it didn't work. I tried changing instruments and that didn't work either. I checked my CPU and it never went above 40%.
Will upgrading to the next highest iMac make a difference? The processor speed is the same, the only difference is there is 4gb ram instead of 2. I will try calling Apple, but I just thought I'd post in the meantime. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Not sure what 'the numbers 1,2,and 3 next to my first three tracks flash with a box' means but it could be something to do with the solution if its the Mute or Solo buttons flashing.
If you go into the Mixer you might find a track that's been soloed or muted that isn't on the arrange page. That's all I can think of from what you've said.
