I am trying to update my iphone 4, but in order to do that I need to update itunes. I am unable to do this, or update quicktime. I get an error message that says
"A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have a dell running windows 7
Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START > ALL PROGRAMS > Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install

I had itunes set up and working since i have had my iPhone and iPad. One day it asked to be updated, so i did. After it updated it stopped working because whenever i tried to open it it would say "this shortcut has either been deleted or moved would you like to delete this shortcut". I then uninstalled iTunes to try and reinstall it but I still get the same message for both 10.5 and previous versions, please help!My situation:
- get error when updating iTunes from 1041 to 1050 or above: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
My system: XP SP3 with all latest updates.
Found out that the 1051 update fixes a major intrusion possibility during the update process, so I want to get iTunes upgraded to 1051.
Did more research and the following worked (not known if all steps outlined were necessary) (I do not guarantee success nor any more issues as a result):
- ran: MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.exe (did JUST the patch option).
- ran: Windows Installation Removal Tool.exe (uninstalled JUST the iTunes program installer folder) (this does not remove the actual program).
- removed all apple software update registry entries.
- removed: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple\Installer Cache\(JUST the software updatefolders) (hidden folder).
- removed: C:\Documents and Settings\current user\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\(JUST the software update folders) (hidden folder).
- DID NOT need to restart
- downloaded latest iTunes update (1051)
- opened using WinRAR
- extracted all files
- ran JUST the apple software update MSI
- it succeeded
- ran JUST the iTunes MSI
- it succeeded
- normally I then uninstall the apple software update program, but DID NOT this time
- DID NOT need to restart

Apparently it's an itunes issue. I just tried to update and got the same issue. Called att to activate my iphone 4s and they say they can do the swap but apple is telling them itunes is down atm. So will have to wait

A program required for this install could not be opened. contact your support personnel or product vendor". I ran a troubleshooting diagnostic on my computer and nothing flagged as a problem. I uninstalled iTunes and tried again and now I don't have any way to sync my ipod touch. Please help with any suggestions!!!
Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.) -
