I'm trying to set my computer back to factory settings, to make it like new. How do I do that?

Throw away any files which may contain sensitive data and securely empty the Trash.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, connect its original thumbdrive and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down.
Use the Disk Utility to erase the partition with Mac OS X installed, and then install a new OS onto it. If you used a disk and are going to sell or give away the computer, include the disk with it.

I tried to set my computer back to factory settings by holding down the command + R key and when I turn on the computer it brings me to mt login page for my password

In order to return your computer to factory spec you need the discs, there is no other way. You can call AppleCare and give them the serial number and they'll ship you a set of the original discs for a fee, or providing that you have at least 1gb of ram you can purchase and install 10.6. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

    Hi NYYJMM,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may want to reset your iPod nano and then sync again. If the issue persists, restore your iPod and try again. See these articles for the steps:

  • Tried to restore iphone 4 back to factory settings now on emergency call only screen?

tried to restore iphone 4 back to factory settings now on emergency call only screen? it also says hook phone up with itunes. well i have an old mac and my itunes isnt up to date and cant be installed up to date because of the old software. what do i do?

You'll need to update your system or fine a system you can use to activate it. There's no way around it.
If you can get to an Apple store and explain the situation to them, they 'may' be able to hook you up with an OS upgrade to Leopard assuming you have a G4 or G5 mac that can handle it.

  • Restoring computer back to factory settings

I recently purchased a used Powerbook G4 12inch and the it still has the previous owners user account and password on it. I want to delete the profile but i cant because it is password protected is it a way to restore the computer back to factory and delete the profile so i can put my own information on there.

i dont have the original discs that comes with the computer. i brought the computer off of someone.
You can call Apple support and see if they have discs available to sell. Someone posted recently that discs for an older Powerbook were NLA. As I recall, they charge around $60 for the set.

  • Restoring computer back to factory settings ater upgrading to Maverick

I'm going to be selling my computer so I want to restore it back to the factory settings. I upgraded to Maverick so will that be a problem or do I just restore it as though no updates were done?

It would have helped to tell us you used Snow Leopard instead of us having to guess.
    Do this, then:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How to set iBook G4 back to factory settings without disk.

I'm about to sell my iBook G4. But I want it back to it's factory settings. I got told:
    Turn off mac.
    Restart and as soon as you see the white screen press;
    Command and S.
    Type in:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    Reboot
but it doesn't reboot it. HELP!

You can't; that procedure will cause it to rerun the Setup Assistant, but it isn't an actual factory reset. If you want to use it anyway, use 'shutdown -h now' as the final command.
The computer shouldn't be sold without its original disks.

Do you have the most up-to-date version of the app? Did you upgrade to iOS 6? Did you check to make sure that the developer has updated the app for the new OS? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the app?

  • I had to take my cmputer back to factory settings and lost my music. How do I get the songs that I have already purchased back?

I had to take my computer back to factory settings and I lost my music. How do I get my music that I previously back on Itunes?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Certainly you did not restore your computer without making sure that your backup copy was up to date.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • How to restore an early 2009 iMac running Mavericks back to factory settings without discs

Today I got an early 2009 iMac from a family member, I would like to restore it back to its factory settings as if I was setting up a brand new computer. He does not have the discs that were originally with the iMac when he first purchased it. It is currently running on Mavericks OSX. Is it possible for me to restore this computer back to factory settings without the discs?

No. Phone Apple and order replacements, or if you don't need iLife, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store; the retail DVD can be used to create a bootable OS, but not to perform a true factory restore.
