Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
             Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

i am trying to upgrade Mac OSX from 10.7.4 10 .7.5 .But, the grey screen is coming for hours.  I pressed the alt key and was taken to options viz. Restart to install MAC again, use time machine. I don't have back-up and so restarted to install MAC again. Can i cancel this now. I want my data to be secure. What should i do?

If you cancel an install there's no telling what state it will leave your Mac in. Let it finish or fail.
Then get a disk, it can even be a pocket drive if it's large enough and back up all your own data.
After that, boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X.

  • Trying to Upgrade to CS4 from CS3 Extended

I am trying to upgrade to CS4 from CS3 Extended.  The Adobe web page states to call Adobe support for this upgrade.  I call them before I attempt the upgrade to ask what I should do.  They tell me to intall it and call back.  I get to the serial screen and call back, they tell me to fully install it in trial mode, then call back.  I do this and call back, but notice it installed CS4 Extended, not CS4.  They tell me they can't help me because I purchased only CS4.  That is all I want is CS4, so I uninstall CS4 extended and try again.  Again the install(from disk) installs CS4 Extended(At least that is what the title page says).
Do I need to uninstall CS3 Extended before I install the CS4 Trial version?
    Thanks for any help,

    Mylenium,
Thanks for the reply.  You are correct and the next support person understood that and got it fixed.
    thanks again for your reply,

I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8.  It tells me to close all open applications.  However, Safari will not close and the installation cannot proceed.  Any suggestions?

Either try to force quit Safari (press Command + Option + Escape keys and then choose force quit in the pop up window), or, you can also shut down the computer. Then boot up and open the app store application to download Mavericks - you don't need Safari for it.

How fast is your download speed? If it's less than 10Mbps, it's going to take hours.
Make sure your Mac can run Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

The v10.9.2 link you posted from is not an upgrade. It's an update for Mavericks only.

Tried to upgrading ipad 1 from itunes and l guess it did not complete the process because all I have showing on the ipad is the itunes logo with the usb cable. When l try to connect it to my system, it resquest that a driver be used to install the device. Please help! How do I restore?

Restoration is relatively simplistic. Here's whatcha do. Plug your ipad in, open itunes, now if itunes doesn't recognize it then you may have a problem, anywho, click on the ipad in the devices interface and go to the info tab, click restore, and it'll be just like it was when it left the factory. To get you data back, it should ask if you would like to use a backup, just select the backup you want and you'll be good to go. That is if you regularly backed up your iPad.

  • Firefox just tried to upgrade to 9 from 8 and now I am in a loop. it keeps asking to restart to complete new version but will not complete.I have restarted in both safe an normal mode. xp pro and all up to date except firefox any ideas on how to fix this?

Firefox tried to upgrade and it failed. It now has a message about restarting to complete upgrade. you can't uninstall it because the same message appears. it will not start no matter how many restarts. had to switch to chrome.

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

  • Trying to upgrade PPC G4 from 10.3.9 to 10.5, getting error message

I'm trying to upgrade a PowerMac G4 to 10.5 from 10.3.9.  Is there a free file I can download to upgrade the OS to 10.5 or do I need to purchase it and if so, where can I get it?

Apple of course has not made it in awhile, and sold out their remaining copies a long time ago, so unfortunately you are at the mercy of the used/recycled market.  Those sellers know they can get that much for it, so they hold out for it.
One alternative is if you live in a large enough city is sometimes you can find a good used local hobbiest type computer shop that repairs/services and sells old equipment.  Sometimes they will have discs in stock that will be cheaper - eg. discs from a computer  they never sold but just scavaged for parts, so the discs are available to sell separately.
Take some time to search around a bit and you might find a deal out there - good luck.

  • Best way to upgrade my desktop from LR3.6/PS CS5 to latest? Also install latest LR on wife's desktop?

I want to upgrade my desktop (and maybe laptop) from LR3 and PS CS5 to latest versions, and also install LR(latest) on wife's desktop?
    What's the most economical?

The CC Photography bundle (PS+Lr) is still hard to beat: https://creative.adobe.com/plans/offer/photoshop+lightroom
The price may go up a little sometime in the future, but at the moment it's a steal and a no-brainer.
Although the subscription model is clearly where things are headed, you can still buy Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 as perpetual licenses (upgrades in your case). But the initial cost is substantial. BTW, Lightroom 6 is probably just around the corner.
About the wife's desktop I'm not so sure. Two active installations is in any case the limit, and according to the EULA the license is strictly personal and valid for one person only. I would not assume that "within the household" qualifies, but you can simply call them and ask (my wife isn't interested anyway, so it's moot here). It is clearly stated in the agreement that the two allowed activations can not be used at the same time.
