• 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro making an annoying whining sound

My 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro suddenly began making a loud whining sound. I have been working her hard recently, but even when I let her rest the sound continues. It seems to be coming from the upper left conner of the machine near the W key. Any suggestions how, or if, I can fix this?

SMC reset should fix it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

I have a mid year 2007 24 inch iMac and will be purchasing a new 27 inch Retina iMac, what is the easiest way to transfer the data and files from my old machine to the new one?

Following up on this thread,
I have a new iMac on the way and my current is from 2008, never had a problem but I am sure there are internal issues that I would prefer not to transfer.
I have no issues other then the slowness in certain programs and that is the main reason to buy a new one.
Programs like numbers and pages seem to take a longer time to open after I update to Yosemite.
I only use 272GB of 500 GB, my memory is 4GB and I am upgrading to 8Gb and bought the 4.0 processor.
Question:
Is there a way to manually transfer items or would that be a waste of time in that if there are issues they could be anywhere and would transfer anyway?

• Retina Macbook Pro, Photoshop CS6, canvas turns black on external display

I have a problem. The entire canvas turns black and cant be edited when I drag the app from the main display (hi-dpi retina Macbook Pro) to the external (normal dpi) display.
I have noticed that I can get around this by opening some psd-files and then deleting all their layers. But hey, I should be able to create a new document for editing on my external display right.
When I drag Photoshop back to the retina display, it turns white again, and is editable.

I am also experiencing this problem. Has anyone solved it yet?
Thanks!

• Can i expand the SSD on my late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro from the current 128GB to 256GB or more

Can i expand the SSD on my late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro from the current 128GB to 256GB or more?

You can look here to see if they have anything available for your model, but be advised even opening a Retina voids the warranty.

• How can I use the bridge photos that are thumbnail size and place in Photoshop to edit, etc? The size is too small, - how to enlarge without blur?

When I use Bridge to transfer a photo into Photoshop, the size is thumbnail. It is too tiny to edit into Photoshop. How to enlarge without blur?

That is the actual size of your image file. 48 x 38 is very small.
That is not a Bridge or Photoshop problem.
It is a very small image and you cannot enlarge it more than x 1.5.
If you want a large photo you must ask for it from whoever gave it to you, or take a bigger photo if it is yours.

• Should I get a £999 13 Inch Macbook Air with 128 GB SSD or a £1249 13 Inch Retina Macbook Pro with 128GB SSD

I am a twelve year old boy ready to get my first Mac computer. I already have an iPad 3 and I really like it. Now I'm going to start saving up for a Mac and I am down to two choices, as listed above. I'm going to be using it for web browsing, games, drawing, word documents, presentations, movies, video calling, messages, Windows 8 and I will be using quite a few apps from the Mac App Store.
Also could you tell me how long Apple support the MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X and how long they support the MacBook Pro with the latest OS.
I also want to know if it is worth paying £200 to upgrade a 128GB SSD to a 256GB one.

If past history serves, Apple will support the 2013 models for 5-7 years with new OS upgrades but there's no guarantee. However that doesn't mean the computer will be worthless. I have a 10-11 year old Mac serving as a guest computer running an OS two versions old. It still does everything our guests would want to do while they are visiting.
The 128GB drive is the smallest I'd recommend and for a teen (who is likely to collect media and lots of software) I'd call the 256GB a very good idea - especially ince you indicate you want to run Win8 too.
The retina MacBook has a gorgeous display and has a faster processor but all those extra pixels push the GPU to the max. Until faster GPUs come along I'm avoiding the retina computers.

• 15 inch Retina macbook pro running hot/overheating.. what to do?

Hello,
I just got my new retina macbook pro. FIrst impressing- the thing is awesome. However, In the process of putting all the stuff from my old PC onto this new machine, I was importing photos into iPhoto. I noticed the computer getting very hot after importing about 1000/5000 photos, so cancelled the import. I downloaded temperature guage from the app store, as well as iStat Pro. Below is a screenshot taken with both monitoring apps open while attempting the import. (these were the only three programs running at the time).
This is a little unsettling.. a 3800$ computer that 'overheats' while attemping to import photos...? Is this normal? I called apple and they said to bring it into a store and the tecs will have a look. I asked if i could simply return the computer (as it hasnt been 14 days yet), but i was told i would be charged a 10% (or roughly 380$) restocking fee...

I note that the CPU temperature shown by iStat pro and Temperature gauge vary significantly. What the former reports is satisfactory but not the latter. Both cannot be right. I have used iStat pro and Temperature Monitor and they are always very close to each others data. You might download same and see how it compares with the other two temperature monitors:
http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
For a little peace of mind a trip to the Apple store genius bar would be a good idea. At least it will tell you if the 'Temperature Guage application is accurate or not.
Ciao.

• Can I wirelessly display the screen of my 15 inch retina Macbook Pro to a Thunderbolt display ?

Can I wirelessly display (like via bluetooth) the screen of my 15 inch, late 2013, Retina Macbook Pro, to a thunderbolt display ?

They can fix it, but not for free. Macbook repairs supposedly are classified into 3 tiers by an Apple Rep, I for least amount of damage and III for most. I have a dent in the corner of my MBP and it would require new housing to get it fixed. $450 (tier I) or ~half the cost of a Macbook Air on education discount... HA.
If it doesn't affect your everyday computing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's awful, but welcome to the club

• Should I buy the 13' non retina MacBook Pro or the RMbP

I am looking forward to buying a new MacBook Pro this year, but I am having a hard time choosing between the newer retina base model of the MacBook Pro or the older (2012) non retina MacBook Pro. I would use the laptop for non heavy gaming, web browsing, and creating documents for school. What would be better in the long run? I know that the newer retina is non upgradable but would the 128ssd and the 4gb of ram would still be good for a couple more years?

Personally, I would spend the extra $$ and get the 13" with 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash Storage. I bought my daughter an early 13" Retina with 8GB of RAM and 128GB Flash Storage of which she only has ~27GB left. She'll be needing an upgraded Flash Storage (OWC) soon if she doesn't offload some files to an external drive. Her rMBP is not the PCIe flash storage.

• Will apple upgrade my solid state drive in my 15 inch 2014 macbook pro to the 1tb version?

I currently have the 500 GB Solid State Drive in my 2014 15inch Macbook Pro. Due to my usage requirments (videography). I was wondering if i paid for it, could i get apple to install the drive in my macbook?

No. But you can add an external drive for storage uses. However, if you bought it within the past 14 days from date of purchase you can exchange for the model you prefer unless it is a CTO model.

• Will upgrading the nVidia driver in Windows 7 on my Retina MacBook Pro eliminate the ability for Windows to scale resolutions?

Got my Retina MacBook Pro a couple days ago, and at first after installing Windows 7 the resolutions scaled fine. I imagine that the issue started after updating the nVidia drivers to the latest (313.95 beta at the time) and now my resolutions no longer scale, they show as an IPS monitor normally would; at actual size relative to the native resolution.
Can anyone offer any insight? 2880x1800 looks awesome... but I need the resolution to scale.

I solved the issue. Upgrading the nVidia drivers doesn't make any difference except to optimize the graphics card more and more. There are scaling settings in the nVidia control panel that affect the scaling (or lack thereof) when switching resolutions.
nVidia Control Panel > Display Heading > Adjust Desktop Size and Position > Set Scaling Mode to "Full-Screen"
I highly recommend upgrading the nVidia drivers however, especially if you're a gamer, the optimizations they add each driver update can make some dramatic improvements.

• I have a 22 inch monitor set at 150% but since I installed Firefox, the font is too small and the screen is too small. Cannot make font or screen larger. I can do Control++ each time I enter a page but don't want that to be my solution.

In control panel/display, I had my display set at 150% and at 1680 X 1050 resolution. This filled my 22 inch screen with the page content. Now that I have installed Firefox, the font is too small and the content is centered in the screen leaving about3" per side of blank space. I want to fill the screen and make everything larger. Haven't found a way to do that. Firefox tells me in my control panel/display window that by setting my display at 150%, "some items may not fit in your screen if you choose this setting while your display is set to this resolution. It worked fine with Explorer.

The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.
Try the Default FullZoom Level extension:
Or the NoSquint extension:
• I want to buy a 15 inch retina MacBook Pro what configruation do I need?

I would like to buy a 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display but can't decide on a confiruation to get. Here are the things I do on my computer
Use all of the pre-loaded apps Mail, Safari, etc.
Download more from the Mac App Store
Import pictures from my iPhone 5 and iPad 4 and edit them in Aperture
Use iLife and iWork
My budget is around $2600
I will either customize it so it cost less than $2600 or just buy the standard $2199 model.
Please let me know what you all think as to what configuration I should buy!
This will be to replace my 17 inch MacBook Pro from April 2010 whitch has a 2.53GHz Intel Dual-Core i5 processor, 4GB 1067MHz RAM, 500GB Hard Drive

If I were configuring a Retina model, I would make sure that I ordered the maximum 16GB of RAM and the 512GB solid state storage. If that's $2,600, then go for it.
Through MacMall, that configuration is $3,183.99. But I think that it would be worth it.
Good luck,
Clinton
