I'm using ALOT of bandwidth.

Greetings from that desert paradise we all love, Iraq! I am currently deployed, and to make life easier for us, we purchased a satellite internet service. Well, I was talking to our network guy today, and he showed me my share of the bandwidth, its over double anyone else. I don't do much online, Safari is usually open to Facebook and the Aol Instant Messenger is on when I am, so it doesn't seem like I should be using so much of precious internets. Once the chart is displayed, I will "that guy who makes the internet slow for the rest of us" and I want to fix that. What can I do? Do I have a virus? Please help!

Well, you may have to look into the computer to see what applications
or other services in use, installed, or turned on are doing.
The Activity Monitor in the Utilities Folder (see GO in Finder, see item
and open this folder from there) will be able to show you some of the
things going on in the computer, including Network activity; plus you
can see if the use of some applications or utilities (browsers, etc)
and widgets coincide with more Network activity.
You can change some preferences of applications which may be
network hungry to not be looking for the internet; and any browser
you open will automatically try and connect you to some page.
And you can set the browsers to not go online upon opening them.
Widgets looking for content online can consume some bandwidth
as well as processor or system resources. You can turn off some
or all the widgets; and can quit Dashboard entirely if you get and
use the free DashQuit widget.
Music sites, such as they are, will use bandwidth; so will any video
and pages full of still images loading (or large images) will, too.
News feeds with video windows which load and run automatically
are avoidable; the text equivalent do not consume much. RSS
news feeds are good and updated info is fairly fast on those.
The iTunes music player has a 'radio' component, and this can be
a fun way to see what kinds of music is out there, and for sale. It
will run for free, but it will consume bandwidth. Some choices in it
may not work, depending on that you have for internet. In any case,
the Activity Monitor is one of the places to start looking.
Oh, be sure your Firewall is turned on and you are not sharing an
internet connection through your computer to anyone else. It can
act like a repeater to other computers if the settings to do it are on.
Automatic software updates, depending on the frequency of them
and how you have Software Updates set to seek and get them,
may add to the overall bandwidth use. If you have applications
which may be entitled to updates via download, you may be able
to set them to not look online for newer versions automatically.
Some things look online when you start the computer, too.
Instant message services could use more bandwidth than they
appear to; but that'd have to be looked into. Some services
keep trying to connect to you and they may be adding a hidden
level of two-way bandwidth use you do not see up front.
Depending on the computer you have (assuming a portable)
the configuration may vary; so may the setting options.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing!

I am using Hughes satellie for my internet provider.  I am having a problem using all my bandwidth each day.  Is there a way from using this bandwidth.  I am using even when I am not using my computer.  Is there a way to turn off things that are running in the background.

It depends a lot on what you have installed and what apps you run. Here's a suggestion:  Get Little Snitch and see what processes are accessing your internet connection.

Im using latest version of firefox but when i use flash player on websites like bc iplayer i notice my system is hanging and i found out it was plugin-container.exe using alot of resources.
I have latest flash player installed also
    How can i stop this

There are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. Could you see whether anything in this article helps: [[Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]].
You might also consider disabling the new protected mode in Flash 11.3, since that feature is currently being debugged. • My IPhone4 is secretly using alot of data even though I have double tapped Home button and closed all the apps running in the background.

My Iphone4 is secretly using alot of data even after I have double tapped the home button and closed all the apps running in the background.
This just started happening 3 days ago.
When im out of home, the phone drains battery REALLY FAST, I lose 6% battery in 5 minutes.
The phone also heats up and feels very warm after a few minutes.
When I turn the data plan off, it becomes normal again, like I lose 1% every 30minutes even while listening to mp3.
I can conclude that its secretly using the 3G at an alarming rate which causes the battery to die so quickly
I have uploaded 2 pictures showing what happens before and after I turn on my WIFI.
Notice that the ping spikes like crazy on my home network once I turn on my WIFI on my IP4
    WIFI OFF:
    WIFI ON:
I hope someone can assist me with this!
    Thanks!!

There is a common misconception that closing an app on the Quick Launch screen (it's real name) also kills the app's background process. This is not the case. First, all built in apps (mail, contacts, calendar, game center, notes, reminders, Genius, Photo Stream, etc) continue running their background processes even if killed in the Quick Launch screen. For apps from the App Store killing the foreground process also gives the app the option of killing its background process, but it doesn't have to. In addition, any app that has Notifications enabled can restart its background process if it receives a Notification.
iOS 7 gives the user more control over background processes; you can selectively allow or deny any app to run in background. As you apparently have not upgraded this option is not available to you.
As Chris has already told you, there's an app on your phone that is stuck in a loop. As you discovered killing foreground processes did not resolve the problem. One trick that sometimes resolves this is to let the battery run down until the phone shuts off and will not restart. Then charge to 100%.

  • Apple tv using all my bandwidth

.. when i do a speed test on my iMac, it shows 5mbps where as when apple tv is not connected it shows >15mbps

My internet usage went through the roof one day and managed to pull between 12gb and 20gb a day, and I couldn't figure out what it was. After a month of harassing my ISP to look into the traffic, they finally agreed and I discovered that something was downloading an average of just under 1Gb every hour, 24 hour hours a day from Flickr.
Then I clicked and remembered that my apple TV downstairs which no-one ever watches had been changed to the Flickr screensaver. I was shocked that a screensaver could use up so much bandwidth. Needless to say I turned the screensaver off.
Try checking to see if your screensaver for your apple TV is set to iCloud photos, or Flickr or something else on the internet.

  • Nsurlsessiond - what is this and why does it use alot of data?

    Hello
    Firstly
I was in a public library, uploading to my dropbox account, and all of sudden my network speed indicator/ montior showed heaps of download and fast too.
but i was not downloading anything.
I was upping to my dropbox account.
In activity monitor i noticed this service was operating "nsurlsessiond"
    What is this service?
In my connection alert it tells me nsurlsessiond tried to establish a connection to apple-dnld.vo.llnwd.net on TCP port 80 (http)
Secondly, i was using my own wifi, and saw this nsurlsessiond service consuming heaps of data. Again I was upping to my dropbox account. About 1gb this time.
Now I have blocked communciation to "nsurlsessiond"
What is the impact of blocking such communication?
please see details of service in screenshot
Now after this experience, I am wondering is it apple policy to have communication from our macbook's to somwhere without us knowingly allowing it?  I thought apple was respective of our privacy, or has this changed?
thankyou for your help and time.
    regards

  • Smart TV uses up all bandwidth even without wirele...

    Hey guys,
    My hub is a BThomeHub3
I recently bought a lg smart tv but unfortunately it eats all my bandwidth
I started using my wifi connection but realized that it was all being eaten up by the tv, so over to access controls and block the mac address of the tv. Jobs a good one or so I thought, the tv still eats all the bandwidth.
So I reset the tv to factory defaults so that it would forget the wep key, then connected it through powerline adapters so that I could control when the tv connects to the internet.  This does disconnect the wired network and the tv shows that it is trying to connect but times out. YAY!!!!  Wait a minute my bandwidth is still being eaten.
As far as i can tell it is still connected via wireless and is still eating the bandwidth but the tv doesnt even know the password and the powerline has been unpluged.
I cannot see the connection on the router managment page (192.168.1.254).
Here are some of my speedtest.net results (Over wifi from my phone)
    Without tv on 10.24mbps
    With tv on 0.15mbps
My hub says i have 11.8mbps
I dont really want to install ddwrt but i will if this is the only choice bar a new router.
    Guys please help.
    Stod
    P.S.
I am a lead networker so this is quite frustrating that i can mange 250 pc's but one god **bleep** tv beats my ass around for days.
    *Edit*
I will be keeping an eye on this thread tonight so will be able to try anything out quite quickly

If everything is OK when the TV is switched off then it would appear to be a problem with the TV or any signal booster you may have fitted to the aerial of the TV.
I would start off by carrying out a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds. This will give a clean sheet to start from.
To test the system I would remove the powerline adaptors from the equation by unplugging them. I would also disconnect anything else from the homehub except a wired computer. Then run a speed test with TV switched off. Then switch on TV and run another speed test. If it is still poor then it must be the TV.
If it has improved then reconnect your devices one at a time running a speed test after each one connects to see if there is any change. This and all other speed test should be wired.
It is a case of trial and error to find out which device is the problem if it is not the TV.

  • Locationd using all available bandwidth

I know that locationd is used to provide OS X's "Core Location", and uses skyhook, the same service that is used by the iPod Touch to locate itself.
That doesn't explain why locationd is consuming all available (incoming) bandwidth, however. Has anybody else run into this issue? Does anybody know why locationd would do this!?!

Did you try using the Min Load % field for Resource in the resource master ?

  • Has anyone had issues with their galaxy s4s using alot of data for no reason at all?

I had my data on both phones and internet peice at home turned off and got 3 overages within 15 mins of each other .  I calle verizon to help with the situation... but no help.  They said that we were using the data?  I work in a wireless center so i know how to turn it off and I KNOW it was off.  Its ridiclous that my husbands new s4 has used 23 gb of data when he isn't using it that much.  Im stuck now paying a 444 bill because this phone is wacko.  Ive been with them over 3 years.  He just upgraded.  Why wont they try to do something to help... all they say is ma'am  you are using that much data.  Um no we aren't.  STUPID.  Im beginning to HATE!!! verizon.  Im out of contract.  Thinking about closing my account and going with someone cheaper, because I cannot afford a 444 bill every month because they won't help fix the situation.

fallenangelgirl99, we don't want you to go and we're here to help in any way that we can. You have the option of changing your plan during the bill cycle to avoid data overage charges. Did you receive usage alerts via text message? http://vz.to/1hvu4tP Let's make sure that you're on the best plan to fit your usage: http://vz.to/1qhEcv5

  • Kpowersave and hald use alot of cpu-time

I having some big problems with Kpowersave (0.7.3-1 from aur) and hald start using around 60% of my cpu-time, and will continue to do so until i restart the Kpowersave process.
This seems to happend randomly, but around every second hour or something.
It also seems like conky for example starts to take more cpu-time (like 10%) at the same time... Suggest that Kpowersave isnt the one to blame?
The computer is a Dell XPS m1330 with a Intel core 2 duo T7500 cpu.
Don't know what more information to supply, and where to start looking. Anyone understand the problem, and have an idea where to start searching?
    Excuse my poor english.

i would use klaptop-daemon, i'm finding it more usefull and customizable, not quiet a fix for your problem, but using another program would maybe do the trick as well, klaptop-daemon is in the aur repositories

  • What kind of trojans would cause large uploads causing me to use all my bandwidth?

If there isn't a virus that infects IMacs what would cause the above???

Are you running any backup software other than Time Machine? There was another post this week about Western Digital's backup software for their external drives running all the time and hogging processor cycles. The same thing could happen if you are using an online file backup service. Don't know if iCloud is acting that way but you may want to ask in the iCloud forum if you have it on your computer.
Make sure you have Activity Monitor set so that you are not missing some notoriously greedy background processes. There is a "Show" option in the AM toolbar that, by default, is set to "My Processes." Change it to "All Processes to get the big picture:

  • Slight crackles/distortion when session uses alot of tracks

i'm mixing a song for a friend. throughout the song it uses 7 drum tracks,4 guitars on choruses,3 on verses, bass + about 4 tracks of vocals.
its fine throughout most of it, however when theres a part with a very long tom section+all guitars going, bass too, it crackles.
i can fiddle with the EQ on certain tracks-mainly guitars and can reduce this crackle a bit,but is there anything else i'm doing wrong? other than EQ-ing wrong?
its not the system performance as the monitor in logic shows its working fine whilst the session is playing. i've also tried freezing ALL tracks and nothing changes
    any help is great ta!

Check your master fader to see if you're clippnig. If you've got AdLimit on, maybe you're pushing it to hard.
