I'm using mac OSX 10.9.5 to write to NAS, I need to decrease the SMB max MTU size used by the OSX

By default, OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Network MTU is set to 1500. If you perform the following at your SMB server, with an MTU of 1500, you will likely receive Message too long, and the SMB share takes a very long while to mount. This might be the contributing factor that has you believe it is an SMB MTU configuration issue.
ping -c 1 -D -s 1500 smbserver
If you dial the Network MTU down in a custom setting, the ping is immediate, and the SMB share mounts briskly. I tried values in small decrements until the message too long ceased.
ping -c 1 -D -s 1472 smbserver
I have done some searching and I do not see how, in Apple's current SMB implementation, that one can configure /etc/nsmb.conf to reduce SMB MTU size. See man nsmb.conf.

What is the Best & Max Upgrade for Used Power Mac G5

Hi All,
I need your help on purchasing an old Second hand Power Mac G5, which will coast me nearly 1900$ with 20" Cinema Display? is this price is OK for the below Spec.:
Processor: 2.0Ghz Dual Core (1MB Cache for single core)
RAM: 512 MB, DDR SDRAM PCI 533.
Graphic Card: Nvidia 6600 128
Hard Disk: 160GB
And Super Drive for the DVD Rom.
As you see its have an old Graphic Card and Small amount of RAM so what is the best amount I can Add on RAM and Best Graphic Card to get the perfect performance?
And What is the max size of the hard drive supported by the machine is it 2TB or less?
And last not least can I install the new OSX (Leopard) on the machine and is there any difference between MAC Pro G5 and Power Mac G5?

Hi! It all depends on your use. If the machine is to be used for serious work such as video editing and Photoshop use then the more power you have usually means more productivity. On the other hand if you are just surfing the net and using word applications like Microsoft Office then nearly any machine is suitable. The early G5's could use 8 gigs of ram and the newer ones 16. Look HERE for late model specs and look HERE for slightly older models. For most people the fastest iMac is a hard machine to beat but there are tradeoffs with an all in one machine. If one component fails it's hard to repair but with a tower design such as a G5 or MacPro the components are easily more replaced. Also expandability with a tower is easier. You can multiple hard drives to a tower that you can't with an all-in-one machine. The new Macpros start at 2799 as per APPLE's SITE while the fastest iMac is 2199 as per APPLE's Site. I'm not a video card expert nor a raid expert so I'll leave those questions to others. Tom

You do what it says. Your iPod encounterd an error and y have to restore the iPod. That happens sometimes..
Just resync your media to the iPod after restoring.

Max Package Size - Uses

Currently our CRM middleware has the MAX_PACKAGE_SIZE set to 50 in the table SMOFPARSFA (transaction R3AC6).
If we increase the size to 500, is it helpful in decreasing day to day message creation in the outbound queues for mobile clients?

MAX_PACKAGE_SIZE settings are relevant only for initial loads and not for deltas.
You may refer to SAP Note 874446 for more info on MAX_PACKAGE_SIZE.
Increasing its size till 1000 will definitely improve the initial load performance.

Restore OSX Mountain Lion on Used Mac Mini

Hi all,
I just purchased a Mac Mini from someone on Craigslist. It's the late 2012 model (Core i7, OSX Mountain Lion)... The problem is, the person I bought it from upgraded it to OSX Mavericks. I use Pro Tools 10 which doesn't work on Mavericks. So I need to restore the Mac Mini back to Mountain Lion, which came on it originally.
Is there a way to do this? Or do I have to actually purchase Mountain Lion from Apple and wait several days for them to email me the download link?

You need to do this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
    Highlight Internal Speakers / Headphones
    Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and remove the headphone.
    If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
    in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
    Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    Try this even if you don’t see the red light.

    Do this twice
4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the appropriate method.
    Choose the method for:
    "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

    Click the Built-in Output.

Before following these steps, you may wish to back up your important data.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
Enable the root user.
Log in as root.
Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).

You cannot use or upgrade anything that is registered with his Apple ID. You must re-purchase it all using your Apple ID and your iTunes account. This includes the operating system as well. Essentially, you erase the drive and start from scratch. Here's how to get started:

HT4972 We synced & updated my daughters phone for first time using my account. It deleted her contact list and inserted mine on her phone. Now she has been deleting the contacts but it is also deleting from mine! How do I get my contacts back?

I need help. I have an Iphone 3GS and so does my teenage daughter. I had not ever updated her until last night and I updated it using my Apple account. I did not think that I needed to make a separate account for her phone as the phone belongs to me and we share apps and such.
The update went well except all of her contacts were deleted. However, all of my phone's contacts were placed on her phone instead of her own. This was not a real problem for her as she did not have a great deal of contacts. But she did need to start delating mine from her phone. It was not until she had deleted all the way down to the H contacts that we realized as she deleted contacts from her phone, they were also delteing from mine!
I need help in retreiving all the contacts that she has deleted. There are important business contacts that I so did not want to lose!
What can be done? And how do we keep this from continueing to happen?

Querying character column sizes using DatabaseMetadata

In a UTF-8 database, I've created two testing tables, one that uses byte length semantics (BLS) for its CHAR and VARCHAR2 columns, and one using character length semantics (CLS). If I use the standard JDBC DatabaseMetdata.getColumns() query, the size of the CLS columns is reported as 4 times that of the BLS columns. I don't believe this is the desired behaviour for the JDBC drivers.
Regardless, does anyone know a way to accurately determine (preferably using standard JDBC methods) the size of a CHAR or VARCHAR column in characters across different database configurations? I need this to compare column lengths in a ASCII and UTF8 database.
I'm using the standalone JDBC drivers v9.2.0.3 for JDK1.4 (odjbc.jar) running aginst Oracle 9.2.0.0.

It appears that this forum uses "[" "i" "]" to denote italics internally, so these characters are missing where the code sample becomes italic, between 'columnMetadata' and '='.

Strange: Mac screen menu-bar requires max-heap-size to be set.

I planned to omit the max-heap-size attribute in the line of my jnlp file

The idea was that with Java 1.6 the heap size is set automatically
according to the client's RAM.
Unfortunately, the Macintosh screen menu-bar works if and only if the max-heap-size attribute is present.
It is a MacOsX=1.4 with Java1.5.
Strange, since the Mac runs Java 1.5 and I am talking about settings for 1.6.

Not sure what that means since there are likely OS level calls that must be implemented in some place in the API. Which are specific to Mac.
Just as there are differences between windows/solaris/linux which Sun accounted for.
And that would be what Apple would have done to make it work on Mac. And what someone (someone who likes Mac) will need to continue to do with the public release (explusion?) which is the form that Java will have going forward.
The main thing that should be improved on a Macintosh
is to directly allow for Linux and Solaris executables such that the Linux JDK could directly work on a Mac.The main thing, again, is the Apple is no longer supporting Java on the Mac.
And Apple, not Sun and certainly not Oracle, were the ones that created the Java VM.
So the main thing at this point is that ALL future directions that Java take are dependent not on Apple but on the Macintosh community. That includes features as well as fixes.
