I mac g5 hard drive booting issues

My problem is this, i just tried to upgrade from tiger to snow lep, the installer got stuck so i siwthced it off and concealed defeat and went to do a full format job, once i deleted all the files i formatted to guid so the hard drive would be bootable right? i then installed snow lep all seemed well  but now the hard drive wont appear in the boot menu although it appears in disk utilities on the snow lep install disk

If you are really running a PPC G5, you cannot install Snow Leopard, it only works on intel machines. And you need to partition a PPC as APC, not GUID.  opefully you have a full backup to resore your drive from.

  • Tecra A11 - Solid state hard drive boot issue

I have an A11 PTSE0A-088021 and am attempting to install a Kingston 64GB SSHD.
When I boot it is displayed in the POST and also in BIOS.
When in the Windows 7 pre installation environment the drive is displayed in "Where do you want to install windows". I can see the drive and the partition, delete and create a new partiton.
Message "Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partiton 1. (show details).

The computers hardware may not support booting to this disk.
Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu.
I have checked drive in BIOS and seems to be in order.
Are there controller drivers required for this drive? Toshiba hardware or Kingston?
Does anyone know of a controller driver needed as I have searched the web and cannot find controller driver for this drive.
I didn't think there should be any drivers required to install windows to a solid state drive but there must be something out there. Assistance appreciated.

    Update.
Ran recovery cd's and recovery proccess appeared to complete successfully but when rebooted after completion OS still fails to boot. Message is "Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready..."
From what I can gather researching other forums it appears the sata controller driver is missing or corrupt.

  • If you format in Guid for Intel Macs, Apple partition for PPC Macs for Boot drives, then why do my PPC Hard drives Boot in my 2007 Mac Pro, what gives?

I recently purchased a 2007 Mac Pro for a song, swapped the CPU's for octo chipsets and proceeded to wait for new Hdd's in the mail. I was told the Hard drives in my old G5 would not be bootable unless they're in Guid format. Disc Utility confirmed to use the specific maps as well and yet all of my 2006 PPC Power Mac G5 Hard drives boot in my MP without a hitch, although a few none universal apps do not work. So what am I missing, does it really matter which Apple partion map to choose from or is this a fluke?...

all of my 2006 PPC Power Mac G5 Hard drives boot in my MP without a hitch
Yes, and what version of Mac OS  are they booting?
    >> They will boot the OS that is on them, but not a later one.

  • Mac Pro 2008 having boot issues...

    Hi,
My Mac Pro is having boot issues,It occasionally gets stuck when I turn it on and the fans go up a bit then I just get a grey screen, sometimes just shutting down and restarting works and sometimes not. I repaired the disc though it says has no issues and repaired permissions. It still does it. if I hold down the option key and boot and select my system drive then it boots fine. Once up and running everything seems fine it wakes from sleep no problem but after a shutdown it sometimes will not boot, it's almost 50 50 chance at this point that it does not boot. I can try booting off and older back up and see if it happens. I do have two video cards and 12 gigs of ram but not sure when this started to happen but it seems to be happening more often lately.
The Mac Pro warranty is over, taking it in for service is not an option at this point. I will install Snow Leopard on a new drive and see if it still happens as a test.

    88 * C is HOT
Hard drives are not much of an issue, even 4, though I don't like now that WD Black tend to run 40-42C.
I recommend everyone run SFC regardless. It should be a REQ'D background app!!!
That and Temperature Monitor  or iStatPro.... but on the whole only use the minimum and no duplication, not even for checking SMART health status. "less is more" or the olde "too many cooks" approach - your system runs better, even faster, and less trouble.
Kicking the fans up 400 rpm makes a significant change in temps. But of course if it is
    Hutch
    Pushed in corer
    Up against wall
    No air flow
    Direct sunlight
.... can't help much or enough

  • What would happen if my mac os hard drive failed

so i have 2 hard drives
1 for windows bootcamp and 1 for mac
as it is now, i boot to the windows boot manager then choose my copy of windows.
what would happen if my mac os hard drive failed right now?
would the computer still boot and be unaffected unless i tried to boot to mac?

failure is usually not dead. It can be a bad sector, but usually it is a directory issue or just the partition table (but which require either quick or long format)
if you have a workstation, you should clone both operating systems; you should not put them on the same hard drive. And you just use the clone you made for each (Paragon Clone OS for Windows $19; Carbon Copy is sharefare for OS X)
both of those allow booting off the new hard drive while you figure what you want to do or what happened.
If you only have two hard drives use the other drive bays.
Basically NOTHING happens if you pull one or the other.

  • New to MAC, External Hard Drive Problem Transfering files to MAC

    Hello All.
First I'm new to the MAC world, just bought my powerbook pro yesterday. Love it. I tired looking for this topic and found similar post but no solutions that I understood.
    10.4.9
I have a 260GB NTFS external hard drive with about 100 gigs of info on it. I used it with my PC, running XP Pro.
I want to be able to access that HD from my MAC but all I can do is read, I cannot write. I was hoping it would just hook up to my MAC and I'd be able to read and write.
I do not need to be able to use this HD with my PC anymore. I'm 100% MAC now. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to make that happen. Do I have to reformat my HD? What system is that FAT32, NTFS? Something else? And how do I go about doing it?
    Thanks to all.
    D-Power

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You are correct, Macs can only write to FAT32, or Mac formatted hard drives with the built-in software, unless the Mac is networked to the PC, as this article describes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
You can also add Macfuse to the Mac, to connect to an NTFS drive, and that's linked here:
    http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
To reformat the drive, you'll have to erase it with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. Thus before you can reformat it, you'll have to copy over any essential information. The Partition section under Disk Uitlity lets you create a GUID Mac formatted partition under its Options button, and that is ideal for both Intel iMacs and MacBook Pros. If the label under the screen says Powerbook, let us know, and we'll direct you to that forum instead, if we can't answer your question here. Apple Partition Map on the other hand is the ideal for Powerbooks, and PowerPC based Macs. Formatting GUID or Apple Partition map, will let you boot from that drive, to verify that a clone backup was done properly depending on which Mac you made the clone for. Formatting FAT32 or NTFS won't let you make a full backup of your internal hard drive, and only will let you use it for backing up user documents. I highly recommend Shirt-pocket Superduper for backing up, as my FAQ* explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
P.S. The MacBook Pro is the Intel version of the Pro notebooks. You posted to the Intel iMac forum. The Intel iMac looks like: . So unless you have that Mac, you are in the wrong forum. There is no such Mac as the Powerbook Pro. You'll see the label in front says MacBook Pro below the screen if that's what you got. Here's the forum for it for category reference:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=190
And pick a forum within it to post a new topic, if I can't answer your question here.
In addition, this nomenclature article will be helpful as well:

  • G3 Hard Drive boots up only partially

I've just reinstalled my 6G hard drive in my blueberry after using my 6 month old 60G hard drive from it to back up my new iMac G5. The reinstalled hard drive boot sequence is: blank gray, then white then gray with a small question mark for one second then then the little squared face icon (OS 9 or 10.2 as I recall) for a second, soon replaced by the Apple and a few seconds later joined by the little "circling circle" and finally the Apple is permanently replaced by a circle with diagonal slash with the other little circle still circling. This sequence doesn't change although I've tried the iMac Software Restore, Software Reinstall, and OS 10.2 Install, with and without holding the C down while rebooting, and have zapped the PRAM and done all again. I welcome all suggestions. I'm confident the hard drive is physically installed properly. Thanks!

Dale, thanks much, but none of the methods worked. The reinstalled hard drive has 10.3 on it, installed by a Mac dealer who didn't give me the discs; I only have 10.2 (and 7.5) discs, which I suspect won't work to reinstall since 10.3 is on the hard drive . Do I have any recourse other than trying to retrieve a 10.3 startup disc?

  • Hard Drive Encryption Issue

This is in regard to hard drive encryption issues in my USB Hard drive. I have Windows 7. I was encrypting my USB hard drive and
was able to enter a password. However, I did not receive any prompt to save the Bitlocker recovery key.  During encryption process, I received an error. The encryption process was unsuccessful. However, now when I plug-in the hard drive, I receive the
following message on the status bar:
Application and Device Control rule Block writing to removable media. Unencrypted drive found (No_Encrypted_Found) has blocked edpa.exe trying to access Volume
    {e3901a75-f1ff-11e1-817c-806e6f6e6963 alpha-numeric number appearing here}
When I try to open the drive, it asks for a password. When I enter the password, I am receiving the following error message:
Bitlocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media
    being write-protected.
I have read that Bitlocker repair tool can help resolve this issue.
However, I just have the password that I had set to encrypt the drive and Bitlocker recovery key identification. Can this help to get access to my hard drive data  using the Bitlocker tool.

    Checked this ?

  • Moving Garageband Music Files to MyBook for Mac External Hard Drive on OSX 10.5.8  I'm a musician and need to make space on my mac hd. Is it safe to move music files there and delete them on the mac? Thanks!

use a MyBook for Mac external hard drive.
I need space on garageband or the entire hard drive, since I am getting the "need space on the hard drive" messages.
It's scary to move my precious music files!
How should I move them to the external and feel safe about doing so?
Or are there other methods besides the obvious, clearing caches, deleting the trash and downloads, etc., that are recommended?
I am doing music now and producers are waiting for the new vocals!
    Help!
    Thanks!

The process is as simple as just copying your Garageband project to the external drive and deleting from the macs hard drive. But before you delete anything you really need to back them up to someplace else also. Having just one copy is not safe. Get another external drive, DVDs or even flash drives, you absolutely need anything important in more then one place.

  • My Passport for Mac external Hard drive is not recognized

I recently had to purchase a new MacBook Pro, and when I tried to get files off of my Passport for Mac external hard drive.  I get an error stating "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."  And when I try to initalize, and verify disk, I get this message "Partition map check failed because no slices were found.".  I have already updated firmware for the external hard drive.  One site I found stated that it could be that the USB port is not strong enough, and I would need a 2.0 Booster cable.  Does anyone know if this would work?

What did you old Macbook die from?  Likely the HD in it is still ok,  yes?
You can remove the HD inside your old dead Mac and put it into a $20 HD enclosure or HD dock, and remove the photos that way, very easy.........IF your old Macbook died from something other than ALSO a bad HD.
You said----my OLD Macbook pro which recently lost video
What happened with your old "dead" macbook?  Still have it?

  • Creating Partition in Mac Mini Hard Drive

i Have buy a mac mini a week ago, but before three days ago, some file got corrupted, and it does not start, only the password screen appears, when i entered the password, the screen appears again. and it continues. Now i want to partition the mac mini hard drive. i have only one drive, and i want to create another partition in the hard drive. when i create another partition  through the disk utility , i gives error, and cannot create the partition. i acutally want that first i make partition in the hard drive, and after using the "restore from time machine option" to install the mac osx lion in the system. Please help me in make the partition in the hard drive.

Apple themselves don't specify hard drive RPM because they buy a number of different drives, some apparently 4200 some apparently 5400.
It's no surprise that your retailer wants you to buy a G5 though, and is trying to upsell one based on the minis weaknesses - after all, they get more money from a G5 sale than from a mini. They may also be considering your planned use of Photoshop as a stumbling block to effective use of a mini, but the question really is what you intend to use Photoshop to do. If you're a hobbyist, the system is fine and will work more than adequately - particularly if you max out the RAM. If you're a professional user with pro-level expectations, then a mini likely wouldn't be sufficient, not so much due to the drive speed (powerbook users have run Photoshop verisons for years quite happily on what are predominently 4200rpm drives) but because for pro work, Photoshop needs a lot of hard drive space and a great deal of RAM.
On the basis of what you've posted, I'd say your retailer is more interested in their profit than your need. Chances are, if you run PS on the G4 listed in your profile, you're already running on a drive of similar general performance.

  • Can't transfer files from a mac external hard drive to a windows hard drive

Today I went to a friends house to try and take some of his music from his external hard drive. So we plugged his mac converted hard drive into my computer, which is operating on windows 7, and my computer could not read that anything was there. So we plugged in my windows converted into his Macbook Pro, and his computer was able to read it, but for some reason, we could not transfer files from his hard drive to mine.
I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or if it could be because I am using a hard drive that I bought in China, and any information would be great.

NTFS is readable in Mac OS, but can't be written to.
HFS+ is not readable in Windows, though Apple now has a (somewhat problematic and buggy at times) service to allow Windows on mac to read HFS+ to make it easier and more convenient.
There are drivers (free and commercial) to add the ability to read and write to each.
