  • My Mac will not load up

I'm actually doing this as a favor for somebody.
The problem is they live in Spain and have powercuts very regularly. They went away for a few days and forgot to turn their mac off.
Now it will not load up properly and displays on a black screen something about DARWIN. I've never come across that sort of problem before but it sounds quite bad.
I advised them to try and use the back up disk, at that time the disk draw would not open.
It was managed after a while, with a bit of gentle manipultion on one of the cogs. The disk was inserted and the 'C' button was pressed at the start up. When it came to choosing the hard disk, there wasn't one to choose.
What it sounds like to me is the hard disk has been damaged quite badly or even destroyed somehow in the powercuts.
The computer is an old flat panel. 800mhz, 60GB hard drive,
256 RAM. I suppose it is going to cost a lot of money to fix it, is it worth just giving up on it and replacing the machine with something else.
The machine was only used for a bit of word processing and web browsing.

There is a nother thread called 'crashed mac" here where the guy has the same problem....not sure of the solution. He might need to boot to a Disk warrior CD and see if that helps. Its a problem i have not hear much about, but this is twice in one week....and if you google it, you will find it even more common...but no real solution that I can find yet.

  • Safari browser on Mac will not load

MMy Safari will not load telling me to contact Microsoft ?

It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily. There are several ways to recover.
    1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
    2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.
    3. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
    4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.
After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • Mac will not load. Shows a screen with a question mark.

My macbook only loads to the screen where a question mark is displayed.
I've tried all the trouble shooting tips such as restarting while holding the command/option keys etc, removing the battery, etc. At the step where I try to do first aid on my hard disk, that will not work. "No valid package" displays as the error. It will not restore or erase either. The installation disk will load but not progress further. The computer can not read the hard drive anymore.
This happened after I left programs running and the computer went to sleep, when I came back it froze and I restarted but to only get this. Help?

I notice the first two replies you've gotten tell you to do things that you say you've already done. There's just no accounting for that kind of behavior -- it's very odd.
To answer your question, if Disk Utility cannot even erase the hard drive, you most likely have a hardware problem. A MacBook hard drive out to be able to report its SMART status, I would think, so try selecting the drive (not the partition, but the drive itself) in Disk Utility. At the bottom of the window there will be some info text -- what does the one labelled "S.M.A.R.T. Status" say? If it says "About to Fail" in red letters, that means you've definitely got hardware issues, and the drive itself needs to be replaced. If this machine is still under warranty, it ought to be fixed by Apple at no cost to you.
If the SMART status says "Verified", that means it's not a hardware issue, in which case it's puzzling why Disk Utility can't even erase it. In that case, I would advise trying a third-party disk utility, like TechTool Pro (http://www.micromat.com/). Perhaps then you could repair it to the point that Disk Utility could erase it. (And, if the damage is this bad, I'd definitely recommend erasing it and reinstalling everything from scratch.)

  • Mini Mac will not load

recently my mac has been real slow, then a few days ago, it refused to load. I turn the power on, the power light comes on, you can hear the fan, the chimes go, then I get the gray page with the apple log and the circle thing. That is where it ends. I took it to the Genius Bar. He checked the hard drive, and repaired something. Then sent me home, telling me to install the Mac OS X using the Archive and install. I tried this, however I did not have enough space for it. About 8050MB over. I went through and deselected some of the things to try to free up space. I had to deselect everything and was still 726MB off. I quit installer and now when I try to get it to boot from the disc, it wont.
    Any suggestions?

With the mini's original install disk in the drive, reboot the system and if holding the C key down doesn't appear to work, retry but this time instead of the C key, hold the OPTION key down (ALt if it's a PC keyboard). This key should put the system into the boot loader, where it should list all available boot sources for the system. Given the internal hard drive is faulty, the only drive it should list is the optical with the install disk inside. You then select that drive so the system will boot to it.
If you don't get the optical drive listed, make sure it is in fact the mini's original install disk that you're using - if it were a disk from another system instead, or a 'rail' copy of MacOS from prior to the date of the release of that model of mini, the install disk won't show because it isn't a valid boot source for that system.

  • Mac will not load

    I recently acquired an old G4 and on booting up, was launched into the Darwin/BSD screen. Since I had no idea what the userid or password was, I followed the advice in this article;
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1553062
Rebooted the machine and it is permanently stuck in some kind of loop on start up. All I see is the black mouse pointer, then the wait icon for a while, then back to the mouse pointer. This goes on indefinitely. I haven't bothered to wait it out, but it's obvious somethings wrong. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

    Q_Al, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Do you have a system install disc or the restore discs that came with the Mac?
Will it boot in Safe Mode? See
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)

Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • Transferred music from PC to Mac will not load on iPod

I'm new to Mac's--have a G5; I used my iPod as hard disk to transfer my itunes library from a PC to the Mac; this list shows up in the Source list but not as my Library, it's designated with a music note symbol-in blue-with a ejection symbol (like the ejection symbol you see next to my iPod symbol in the source list); I can play the tracks--but am unable to drag tracks to a new playlist or download them to the iPod; I've spent untold hours trying to correct this updating preferences, etc...everything thing I've read so far does not match my scenario---does anyone out there have a suggestion on how I can correc this. I've got approx 500 songs that I am unable to use! Help is much appreciated!
    Yvonne

You might consider explaining what "not working" means.

  • I have recently upgraded my mac and ipad to IOS7 and find that Safari will not load onto my iPad. It just shuts down the app. Any ideas? I have been onto Mac who took me through a very long iPad robot, but the problem is still the same! Help appreciated

I have recently upgraded my mac and ipad to IOS7 and find that Safari will not load onto my iPad. It just shuts down the app. Any ideas? I have been onto Mac who took me through a very long iPad robot, but the problem is still the same! Help appreciated

Do you mean that you did a soft-reset ?
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
If that doesn't fix it then try closing Safari via the iPad's multitaskingbar and see if it works when you re-open it :double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Safari app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
After trying the above you could also do a soft-reset (even if this is what you've already done it might be worth trying after clearing Safari's cache and closing the app via the taskbar) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mac Mini will not load after recent update.

My late 2012 model Mac Mini just had a software update and upon rebooting, my login name did not populate.  I rebooted again and now I get the gray screen with spinner and progress bar.  Once the progress bar loads I have just the spinner for a minute or so before it cuts off completely.  I use a wireless MAC keyboard and it will not load into safe mode when I try holding down SHIFT upon reboot.  Any suggestions?

Try Safe Mode with a wired KB
Use a PC KB if necessary
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970299
    Boot to recovery
OS X: About OS X Recovery
and try repairing the startup disk
    Next reinstall the OS

  • When turning on my mac all i get is the 1st screen it will not load to the next screen for log in pls help

When turning on my mac I get the first white screen with the apple logo but it will not load to the next login screen

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.
