I may have to carry a balance, for the first time ever

I have never carried a balance on my credit cards before (other than two accidental late payments, one in 2008 and one in 2009). I had to take my boyfriend to the emergency room on two occaisions a couple of weeks ago, and today, we got the bills (insert scary music here). As soon as I saw the bills, I called the hospital, knowing that they have a discounted rate if you pay your full balance soon after the date of the bill. I was able to score a 25% discount, but had to pay it then. I put it on my Discover It card, which has a 0% promo interest rate for a while (since I just got the card in April). I could have paid it out of my emergency fund, but I thought it would be just as easy to do it this way. What do you guys think? Boyfriend will just make the payments to me and I will pay off the balance as he pays me. I know it will get paid, since we have lived together for nearly a decade and he has never not paid me back for anything, but I am still a little unsettled about carrying a balance. I assume I will see a drop in scores temporarily for utilization. Can I expect any other side affects from this?

Can I expect any other side affects from this?It mainly depends on the impact to your utilization though there may be a small hit for having a balance report on a card that was previously not reporting a blaance.  That said, unless you were paying the card down to 0 prior to report date it was reporting a balance even if you were paying in full.  Payments made after the report date but by the due date do not reduce the reported balance since the balance had already reported. You can do the utilization math to see how much your overall and individual utilization would change but we can't tell you that you'd see an impact of X points. You'll lose your grace period but if you have 0% on purchases that doesn't matter.  If you were subject to interest you'd have to deal with residual interest even after paying it off.  However, neither of those directly affect score.  The impact would be to utilization.  "Utilization has no memory" is quite often stated here but bucketing is possible and it does happen to some.  It's not "memory" per se but it does mean that it can take a little while for the reduction in utilization to show its effect. Annipoo wrote:
I could have paid it in cash, but I thought, why take money out of savings (where it is earning interest) when I could put it on Discover for 0% and also get the 2% cash back? Was my reasoning wrong?Nope.  Your savings is probably not accruing that much interest but it's more than the 0% you'd be charged on your Discover and it's probably less than the 2% you'd get with charging it on Discover.  If you didn't have 0% then it would probably make more sense to rely on a liquid cash reserve.

how long do I have to charge my ipad for the first time?

Most iPad come wit a 60-70% charge. You can use it immediately and then charge at your convenience.
    FYI
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Restore from backup and everything will be exactly as it was when the backup was created.
Restore as new and the device will be as if it just came out of the box.

  • I want to create for the first time ever an iPhoto library on my Mac Mini from all of my seperate external hard drives over the years. Instead of filling my Mac Mini hard drive space with all of the pics can I import it to a seperate Apple hard drive.

I want to creat for the first time on my Mac Mini an iPhoto library. I have many seperate hard drives with pics I want to import but are concerned I will fill the hard drive with pics alone. Can I install the pics on one larg (1TB) external apple hard drive and use iPhoto functions still with the pics being installed on a seperate drive from the iPhoto OS?

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once that is done you can import directly into the iPhoto library on the external HD.

  • [solved]Installing Windows for the First Time Ever.

I'm not unhappy with Linux or anything.  I just finally need Windows (for the first time in many years).  I'm not really a n00b either, but I figured forum is where this post belongs.
The dual boot guides that I've seen so far have two differences from what I plan to do (I'm not sharing a HD, I have a separate SSD for Windows, and the other guides assume you already have windows, and show you how to install Linux alongside it), so I have a few questions:
I have an SSD that I intend to wipe out and install Windows on.  Do I need to do any special prep for this?  When I'm in the Windows install live cd, How will I know which HD is the one that I want to use?  (I guess if it lists the size, that might help).  Should I manually disconnect the other Hard drives to be safe?  I know that Windows likes to be on the first partition on the drive, but if Windows will have it's own drive, does it need to be plugged into the first SATA connection on the motherboard?  When I buy new hardware, I generally throw the drivers disks away (because you don't usually need them for Linux)  Is that going to be a nightmare?  Is installing Windows 7 a nightmare anyway?
That's all I can think of.  Any other tips would be welcome.

You can boot a windows on a second hard disk in grub like this:
    title Windows
    map (hd0) (hd1)
    map (hd1) (hd0)
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    #makeactive # Not needed for windows 7
    chainloader +1
During the installation, I assume the target HD has to be the first one, so it's probably best to disconnect the other disc. Also, windows always overwrites the MBR, but it's easy to fix that with a live cd. Of course, that isn't a problem if you are installing to your second hard disc.
Windows 7 needs (at least) two partitions: a boot partition of about 500 MB and one for windows itself (I think 25GB is recommended for a 64 bit windows). Windows can be installed anywhere on a disc, even in a logical partition, but the boot partition needs to be on a primary partition. I'm not sure if it has to be the first one. Earlier versions of windows didn't need a separate boot partition if windows was installed on a primary partition.

Hardware generally works out of the box on windows, except for the wireless for which you usually need to download a driver. Installing windows 7 is so easy that a monkey could do it. The installation does take a lot of time though.

  • Backup up an old iphone for the first time ever...

I'm helping a friend transfer data (over 1,000 photos and some notes)  from her old iPhone to a new one. When connecting to iTunes for the first time with the old phone, it wants to set everything up for the first time and I'm afraid it will erase everything BEFORE we get a chance to back it up.
Are my assumptions incorrect? How do we avoid losing her data and get a sucessful first-time back up? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.... THANKS!

    Yes.
Take a look at this document: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Promotional Bundle Discount - Disappointing Customer Service for the first time ever

I'm a long time Comcast customer currently on a triple bundle package.   My promo discount ended and typically I can call; talk to a knowledgeable rep; and find a comparable bundle to keep my rate under $200 a month (tv, internet, phone that I use for business calls).   Last week I got a "sassy" rep who was anything but helpful;  reading off scripted cards; insisting that she was doing a good job and had satisfactorily helped me.  I kept telling her no...I wasn't happy hearing there was NO promo available to me via the phone but I should try going to the website...well, I've spent another hour online trying to find alternatives with no luck.    After reading some forum posts, I'm convinced there is NO site on comcast that offers any promo bundles for existing cusotmers that want to lower their bills.  I do not need all the channels that my current plan has, but apparently if I change some things, comcast will get me for additional equipment costs so I'm sort of screwed unless we just drop everything and switch things up....I do hope someone from Comcast reaches out to help before you lose me as a customer......

I must have talked to the same rude customer service girl as you did. I was also trying to get a reduction in my bill and her response was to give back the modem that I rent and that would take $10.00 off my bill. For the last month I have had nothing but poor wifi service, having to call almost every day and have my modem reset. Well I hooked up this new modem that also includes the router on Saturday, what a nightmare that was. For more than 24 hours now my wifi has been intermittent at best. I called earlier and spent a good hour on the phone being transferred multiple times and each time having to repeat the same stuff over and over again! I have been with Comcast for more than 15 years and I think it's time for a change, tomorrow I am calling AT&T !!!

Itunes is on my desk top on windows 7 and I can not open it, I have just downloaded it again and hit repair to see if this helps as well but it still won't open

Okay, launch iTunes... does it work?
If so, in Edit > Preferences > Advanced is the option to "prevent syncing of iDevices" selected?
Another possibility, in Control Panel > Default Programs > Change Auto Play Settings > what is the system set to do when an iPhone is connected?

can some one help me with thsi

It doesn't matter. You can start using the phone right away as long as it has charge on it. Lithium ion batteries have no requirements to be charged completlely or drained completely. You can also leave the device on the charger even after it has reached full charge.

  • On my new desktop, for the first time ever, I cannot access my gmail through Mozilla without getting a "get me out of here" option and I cannot figure out why.

I have been trying all day to access gmail on mozilla. I installed, uninstalled, and re-installed Firefox and I keep getting the same warning whenever I try gmail. All other sites function perfectly.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.
It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
