  • Apple messed up the dock when its on the side of the screen...

I want to know why, oh why, the Leopard dock isn't as cool when it is on the side of the screen instead of the bottom?! I have always used my dock on the side of the screen cause it takes up so much less space. But you cannot launch stacks in fan view, only grid view and the dock isn't as nice and shiny!! The whole reason I bought Leopard was because of the fan view! Why did they do this? If I am missing something and that shouldn't be the case then please let me know. Thanks.

the new side dock looks awful, but it's an improvement over the beta versions which had the mirrored shelf on the side. if you'd like to modify the way it looks slightly, you can change the dock border graphics (in this case, the white line that runs along the outside of the dock while it is on the side) by going to System -> Library -> CoreServices -> Right-click on Dock and choose "Show Package Contents". Then, look for either "left1.png" to "left5.png" (or right1.png to right5.png) and modify the graphics as you see fit. Basically, the dock border is an 8-pixel-wide repeated graphic that runs along the outside edge. I changed mine to eliminate the white line and rounded corners and just fade off to the desktop, but it's still ugly...hopefully someone will come up with a better way of doing it soon...

thats a screenshot of my modified dock. not the best looking thing, but better than the half-assed version it shipped with.

  • 10.5.4 update messed up my dock.

I installed the 10.5.4 update and my dock now doesnt have a border around it or the little glowing dots that let you know an app is open. It also crashes when i try to drag something off the dock. My stacks dont have a background either, its just icons. What can i do to fix this? I tried running Onyx to clean out all the caches, but that just made my finder, dash, and trash icons disappear.

Did everything you said, not a big help. I did notice, however, that with my dock on the bottom my windows are reflected as well as the icons. Kinda cool-looking, but not good i suppose.
Perhaps i should re-install the update .pkg with pacifist and see if that gets it all in line?
Heres a pic of the reflecting windows in the new admin acct i created (they reflect in both accounts, i just happen to have the new one open at the time):

  • Messed up Dock.app badly.

Ok, soo I was getting new images from LeopardDocks.com and I pretty much messed up my Dock.app. I deleted some stuff I wasnt supposed to and so on. I wish I had a time machine backed up. Any way I can just re-download the Dock.app straight up and start over clean?

    BassMastaMike,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Pacifist 2.5.1 is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X .pkg package files, .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar file archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them...
It has been upgraded for Leopard.

  • Multiple calendars in iCal

hi guys, is there a way to setup iCal and or my iPhone so that i can see my calendar plus another calendar that has been shared with me? The Calendars are on our Exchange Mail server that we are hosting from our apartment.

.....iCal......waaaaaayyyyy too complicated for me apparently.  I ended up switching phones which doesn't use iCloud and now I can happily eliminate this calendar mess from my dock.  Wow.  1/2 my day was spent on the calendar mess.  Glad that nightmare is over!

  • Multiple appointments in iCal

I'm one week into using iCal as an appointment diary for a healthcare practice.  We often need to book 2 patients in at the same time.  Mostly, these sit side by side but occasionally they overlap - is there anyway to sort this out?  This is especially bad if one appointment is longer than the other.
Would appreciate any help you can offer.

  • Background Change Picture Feature Not Working

I have had my macbook pro for about 6 months now and my change background feature worked fine when I first got it. I could add folders of pictures and tell it change ever 5 seconds and it worked. Over time, I messed with my dock settings and background settings with other third party programs and stuff and decided I didn't like them so I would just go back to the features built into Leopard. I tried to do a random, change every 5 seconds background change folder deal the other day and it never would change. I tried doing it on the default folders like the apple images and the nature ones and stuff but it would never change. I can still add folders. I can click the option of random order and change every x times. When I close out my system preferences, it resets what I did. I go back to my background panel and they are unchecked. How can I fix this and is anyone else having this problem?

delete the file com.apple.desktop.plist from homedirectory/Library/Preferences and log out/in. You background settings should be set to defaults and you should be able to change them as you like.

  • Macbook gone to reset mode

Seems like my macbook has gone to reset mode except that files and applications are intact. I tried to rearrange the icons but it came back to reset mode again whenever it is restarted. Basically, the icons are messed up, the dock was like what it was when it came..I don't know what I have done for this to happen.. If anybody knows this issue, I badly need your help.. Thanks in advance

Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility... When it opens click your hard drive in the left column and then click repair drive permissions in the main window...
Like the other person that responded said, I got this problem when trying to rename the Home folder by creating a new account and then moving everything over as in the tutorial they posted (I think i forgot a step). You could try right clicking (ctrl+click) on your home folder (looks like a house) and then click get info. At the very bottom of the info pane see if you have permission to read and write. Repeat this for the Library folder within the Home folder.

  • Removing items from the Apple Menu

Using Leopard in a School the pupils are always messing up the dock. I have locked system preferences but they are still able to mess with dock settings by going to dock off of the apple menu. Is it possible to remove this item from the Apple menu or to make it inactive
    Thanks

I don't think so. Have you tried checking in 'Parental Controls' section? If there's nothing there you might need a third party software solution. You could always try to contact the Mac Genius bar too, they might know of a 'trick' to remove it.

  • DotMac Translator using 90% of CPU? ? ? ?

Help - in the past several days, I have noticed that an application named "DotMac Translator" is constantly using 75 to 90% + of my CPU capacity.
I'm using a PowerMac with a single 1.8 Ghz PPC chip, and 1.5 GB ram. I have not noticed the same problem on my Mac Mini or iMac G5 (all connected to the same .Mac account)
BUT, on my PowerMac, The CPU meter on "Activity Monitor" stays Pegged out at 100%, and everything on the machine has slowed to a snail's pace.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I also use MS Entourage, and recently I have noticed an application bombing frequently - a sync program that supposed to sync Entourage with Address Book and iCal.
    Any help would be Appreciated!!!

Parallels messes with the Dock, there has been problems with it before when 10.6.7 was updated to 10.6.8.
Did you uninstall it properly using their uninstaller?
Do a Finder > Go > Go to Folder and paste this line and press Go!
    ~/Library/Preferences
scroll down until you see a file like
    com.apple.dock.plist
and place it in the Trash (might be two of them, move the one you can)
Reboot the computer and see if that works.
Next try the same with (but don't Trash it), just move it out and see if it's recreated after a reboot.
    com.apple.dock.db
If that fails (put the file back where it goes) then
run the #12 and #13 OnyX routines here
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Lastly check with Parallels as they likely have seen this problem many times on their forums.

  • Bridge disappeared from iMac Without a Trace

One day it was there and functioning fine and next time I turned on computer, the docked icon for Bridge showed a question mark when I clicked on it.  Anyone heard of anything like this?  iMac is encrypted so this was not an outside job.

iMac is encrypted so this was not an outside job.
Well, that should narrow it down to an inside job then
There are many ways to mess up the dock, having a question mark in it usually means the original install is not present anymore. But some other mysterious reason can cause this also.
Quickest way to find if Bridge still is functioning is to open PS and click on the Bridge icon to open it. If it opens normally the icon may be repaired or a new one appears. Drag this one to the place you want it and it should stay permanent in the dock.
Also check the icon with right mouse click menu/options/show in finder to see if Bridge is still installed in the default application folder.

  • Major, Persistent Graphic Glitches. HELP!!!

I've never had any major problems with my iMac before yesterday. I started noticing little random glitches popping up. But then I started seeing it everywhere. In the dock, in the menu bar and everywhere in-between. I thought maybe upgrading to 10.5.1 could solve my problem, but it hasn't.
    Here are some screenshots:
    http://homepage.mac.com/marceline407/.Pictures/glitches/dock_glitch.png
    http://homepage.mac.com/marceline407/.Pictures/glitches/spotlight_glitch.png
    http://homepage.mac.com/marceline407/.Pictures/glitches/misc_glitches.png
As the glitches got worse it started locking up. First it would lock up only briefly, but it would seem to get worse and worse and lock up for longer periods of time until I would get impatient and reboot. I noticed that I could sometimes get it to unlock by clicking on the desktop or messing with the dock or hitting command-tab. And if I was typing something and it locked up before the text would show up on screen I could get it unlocked all the text I had typed before and while it was locked would appear. Usually if my iMac locks up it won't keep taking input from the keyboard.
It's almost as if the computer's processes are working fine, but the graphics processor (or wherever the pixels get their orders) is lagging.
In the picture below; I moved a window and it locked up again. Then when it came to, it refreshed the pixels around the window but wouldn't refresh the rest unless I took the window and moved it all around the screen or went into the overview of my spaces.
    http://homepage.mac.com/marceline407/.Pictures/glitches/graphicrefreshglitch.png
The most noticeable glitch is the most elusive. It's like the whole screen motion blurs horizontally. It's not really a blur, it's almost like the pixels all jump in opposite directions for a second or two.
Is leopard trashing my GPU or what?! I want a new iMac, but not like this!... . . not like this.
    ~Cody

Ok, well according to my local Apple certified computer specialists; I need a new power supply and logic board. I have no idea what caused the malfunction of these components (and they didn't seem to either), but I'm not putting down 500 wing wangs that could be going towards a new computer to fix a 3 year old iMac.
Amazing timing really. The warranty ended in September.

  • Using PAP authentication for 3G stick

Honestly, I have no idea what this PAP authentication actually does and I don't really care about it but I need this setting for my 3G modem. The stick (ZTE MF180) is already working but only by using a little program which needs a surprisingly large amount of system resources (an amount that this program does not deserve and it's even messing up my dock with a ridiculous icon). So I'm trying to get this thing working with the network settings of SL but the authentication seems to be a problem. I can not change it directly in the network settings thats why I'd like to know: How do I change the authentication to PAP?

    This is all I got:
The one thing I had to do was to create the /etc/ppp/options file with the following contents:
    refuse-chap
    refuse-mschap
    refuse-mschap-v2
This obviously disables CHAP so that it uses PAP authentication, which is perfect for authenticating against the Virgin Broadband servers.

  • Dock preferences mess up on reboot

This is starting to drive me nuts! Running 10.6.7 with all updates
Every reboot my dock gets messed with, all my server/share mount points are the gray question marks- "?"
The app store icon is always returns to my dock on every reboot. (grr) I don't want the app store in my dock, it takes up space...
This didn't start happening until the security update last month.
I've already trashed my dock db/plists twice...
And this has also started on my newly re-installed MBP (also 10.6.7)
Any thoughts or secrets to fix this?

The picture is becoming more clear...
When I booted up tonight, the dock was gone again. This time, before rebooting, I went into Display prefs and, sure enough, it thought I had two displays. When I clicked on the Detect Displays button, it realized that I only had one display and everything went back to normal.
    So now the question becomes...
Why does OS X occasionally think I have two displays?
