  • IPod Nano nightmare with Win2K

I've been messing with an iPod Nano for two days now trying to get it to work on an older Compaq (200MB RAM, 750 MHz AMD, Win2K). I added on a USB 2.0 card specifically for the Nano.
I've had nothing but problems getting it to work smoothly. The problem is there are so many problems I can list them. Sometimes when I try to manually update the iPod, the system ejects the iPod then shows me a dialog: "New equipment has been successfully installed. System must be restarted, do you want to restart."
When I click No, disconnect the iPod and reconnect it, then I can sync it.
Still other times, I get variations on "File cannot be found," "Volume doesn't exist," or "This iPod is not properly formatted." When I try to restore using iPod updater, I get the message, "This updater does not support the iPod hardware you have connected." But it is the software I installed off the CD that came with the Nano.
When I plug it into a G5 iMac running Tiger, it works perfect.
    aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Juile,
    Technical Specifications: iPod nano
    1. iTunes 4.9 and later must be installed.
    2. Windows system requirements
    * PC with USB port or card (USB 2.0 recommended)
    * Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
One thing to note that you're Compaq probably does not support USB 2.0. You may want to check if you have Service Pack 4 or later installed.
If you setup your iPod nano first on Mac then the flash memory will be configured to support Mac not PC and visa versa. It would be nice if Apple would allow one common format so Man and PC could be used interchangeably.
In some of the older PC systems after installing the new software its always advisable to reboot. After rebooting if you review the Device Manager located under Control Panel --> System you can see if any of the device drivers are incorrectly installed. If so they will be indicated with a red X showing an error. If everything looks OK here then it might just be the USB interface. There may be some incompatibility running the AMD chipset versus Intel.
It’s difficult to tell from your description since I’m not sure if the warning/errors you’ve experienced are from the hardware or software (iTunes, iPod, etc…). It would be best to try to narrow these down. The volume problem to me sound like software issues.

  • Is there a way to charge my Ipod Nano on my computer without turning off?

Trying to find out correctly if I had to put in sleep or hibernate. Just a first time user of Apple Products. Not rushing by the way, but if anyone can respond ASAP right away that's fine, because I'm tired by the way and I don't want to kind of mess up my Ipod Nano w/ watchband.

Just connect it, doesn't matter if it is off or on. But make sure your computer does not go to sleep because it will shut off charging and may actually drain the battery of the Nano.

  • I had my Ipod nano 7Gen factory restored. Nano touch is working smooth without any song init but after i have any of the songs shifted from itune touch buttons get messed up. They don't work. Help me in over coming this issue

I had my Ipod nano 7th Gen factory restored. Nano touch works smooth without any song in-it but after i have any of the songs shifted from itunes, touch buttons get messed up. They don't work. Help me in over coming this issue.

    Hello Rohantm,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPod nano (7th generation) touch screen.  I recommend the following steps for the issue you described (you can skip the steps you have already tried):
Touch screen does not accept input
Clean the screen with a microfiber polishing cloth.
Do not wear gloves while using the touchscreen. Do not use the touchscreen with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion. Moisture affects touchscreen behavior in the same manner as it affects a trackpad.
If you have a protective plastic sheet or film on the touchscreen, try removing it, because it may be preventing the touchscreen from working properly.
The current application may be unresponsive; try resetting iPod by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home buttons simultaneously for a least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Sync with iTunes and restore the iPod.
    Issue not resolved
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.

  • Today I downloaded a book reader app then downloaded one free and one purchased book to listen to on my Ipod Nano. Initially Ok, then a mess, now missing. Any ideas?

After downloading the app was there, the books were there, but nothing would play, not even the music. I re-searched the computer for music and now there is no Books tab and no books. There are duplicate music files and they all play. What a mess! Anyone know what's up?

What book reader app? There are no apps for the iPod Nano...

  • Ipod nano screen completely messed up

I've noticed recently that my Ipod nano screen has become totaly messed up, i can only see the top half of it,where it says Music, Photos, etc. and even that is all deteriorated, whilst the bottom almost look's like a barcode. Although i can still listen to music, volume is inacessible.
Could some one please help me on this, i just got this recently by winning it from a local radio station and I dearly love it, help would be appreciated.
PS: this is not something physicly on the screen or the result of a scratched screen, it's the actual inside, where the song information etc. is viewed.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You might want to try this link:
Resetting iPod if it appears frozen or doesn't respond
According to the Tech Specs (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html) Windows 98 isn't supported - could that be the answer?
    Windows system requirements
    * PC with USB port or card (USB 2.0 recommended)
    * Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later

  • My very messed up ipod nano

I've had my Ipod nano for about a month, I havent used it that mcuh, havent dropped it, gotten it wet, or anything like that. Since a couple days ago it's had two problems:
When I pick a song other than the Sk8er boi live acoustic EP, it just scrolls through the songs until it gets to it (sk8erboi). the only way I can get it to stop scrolling is by getting out of "Songs" or by putting it on pause, and even then I can only go through the rating, the picture, etc...
The second thing is that at least one of the songs I bought off i-tunes that have the pic of the cd has the picture that goes with the Avril Lavigne live acoustic EP (most of the songs I got off i-tunes are from that cd) instead of it's regular one.
I was wondering if there is a way I can fix it that deosn't involve taking it apart, or should I just get it exchanged?

i would try restoring the ipod, a while ago my ipod was doing some weird things and i restored it using the ipod updater and it works like new now.

  • Ipod nano (1st gen) screen messed up

I have an ipod nano, first generation. i plugged it in to charge overnight and the next day it was screwed up. when it turned on, it lit up, but the top half of the screen was blank, and i only got 2 minutes of songplay before it shut down. has anyone else had this problem? i'm thinking instead of paying to get it fixed, i might just get a new one. has anyone had repairs done, how much does it cost generally?

ehm... sorry it is 2nd generation.

  • Messed up ipod nano

I just got my ipod a little over a month ago, and i had it in my pocket until i took it out and my screen is partically screwed up, its cracked from the inside...like i can only see a part of the screen the rest appears blank there is a black line in the bottom left. I was wondering if apple can cover this cuz i just got the ipod....or how much will it be to fix it...
    someone please help me.
    thank you for your time

HELP! I have the same problem, my Ipod nano works still, but you cannot see anything, it seems to have a black splotch inside the screen and everything else is white when turned on. How do i fix this? Am i covered? i have had my nano for 50ish days.

  • IPod Nano Screen is messed up

Last weekend my iPod nano was sitting on the foot of my bed in a hard plastic case and it slid off onto the floor. It had been working perfectly before but when I picked it up and turned it on instead of the normal screen coming up what looks like a black and orange fern appeard on the screen.
When I pressed the select and play/pause button to reset it it started beeping at me and I couldn't make it stop for a while. I plugged it into my wall charger and nothing happend. When I got home I plugged it into my computer and iTunes didn't recognize it. While it was plugged in the screen flashed on and off showing that same scrambled image, each time it flashed off it would make a strange buzzing noise.
Is there any way to fix this? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Ok, I've tried just about everything plugging it in, trying to reset it and now it wont even light up when I press buttons. The only time the screen lights up at all is when its plugged in and then it flashes and makes an odd buzzing noise. I don't know what to do.
I'd rather not buy a new iPod I like the first generations a heck of a lot better than the second gens but I don't know what else to do.

  • 1GB 1st Generation iPod Nano USB Device Not Recognized on any computer

I just recently received a free 1st generation 1GB iPod nano from a friend because they couldn't get it to work. I figured I'd take a crack at it and hopefully get a working, free iPod out of the deal...
It already had music loaded on it (mostly a bunch of garbage), so like anyone else in my position I proceeded to reformat the little sucker and wipe its slate clean.
Here is what happens when I try to connect the nano to ANY computer:
Here is how the nano shows up in device manager:
This was the original problem I was having with my desktop PC which is running Windows XP Home with SP2 and all the latest Windows updates. It is running iTunes 7.5.0.20, w/ latest iPod updater software version 1.2.3.
Prior to testing the 1st gen. 1GB iPod nano, I had been charging and syncing my 5th generation 60GB iPod classic on my desktop PC using the same exact cable. All of my USB ports are in working, functional condition and order. I even have “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” unchecked under USB Root Hub Properties.
I tried a couple different USB ports and I used another cable, no luck. So I moved on to my Fujitsu laptop running Windows Media Center Edition, all latest Windows updates, same version of iTunes and iPod software (the difference being that I DO NOT sync any iPods to it, nor do I have any music on it). SAME EXACT PROBLEM, same message bubble, same entry in device manager, and same lack of driver availability.
Thinking maybe it’s just a “PeeCee” thing I dug out my old PowerBook G4 running the ancient Mac OS 10.2. Keep in mind this thing only has a 400 MHz G4 processor, 512MB RAM, 30GB hardrive, and USB 1.1 ports. The iPod nano wouldn’t even give a hint that it existed when I plugged it in.
I have tried every single little Apple trick available. I’ve done the forced restart while connected and while not connected to the computer. I’ve done forced disk mode while connected and while not. I’ve run iTunes diagnostic tests on connected devices. I’ve messed with USB port settings. I’ve tried two different USB 2.0 iPod cables. I tested my dad’s 8GB 2nd generation iPod nano to see if it linked up with my desktop and my laptop IT DOES. I even tried my 60GB 5th gen iPod classic OVER AGAIN to see if it still worked, IT DOES.
Also, this 1st gen iPod nano will not charge when hooked to the computer through USB. When I plug it in, between the time it’s plugged in and when the “USB device recognized” bubble pops up the battery icon shows it is charging, but as soon as that bubble pops up it disappears and discontinues pretending to charge.
On my Fujitsu laptop, I uninstalled everything having to do with Apple. I uninstalled iTunes, Apple Software Update, everything. Restarting after it all of course. Then I installed the old iPod Software Updater from 6-28-2006. I was pretty sure this wouldn’t work because the iPod isn’t even recognized by the computer. In order for the iPod to work in the iPod Software Updater or iTunes it has to first be recognized at the basic Windows level. Which it isn’t…
I have done research all across the net and the only real answer I found was that the iPod Nano’s internal USB controller is dead. I’m 99% sure it has nothing to do with my laptop, desktop, USB cables, software, or drivers. What do you guys think?

Nope I have not figured anything out since I posted this. The closest answer I've found is that it's the internal USB controller which has gone bad. If that's the case than there is really nothing more I can do.
I did find one opening and that was the diagnostic screen. You get to it by holding down the Menu and Center buttons, as soon as the iPod resets hold down the Left and Center buttons, the iPod will beep and then it will go to a diagnostic screen. Maybe somewhere in there you can find the problem I don't know how to use it though.

  • IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"

Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.

I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

  • 6th gen ipod nano not recognized by itunes on my PC (Windows 7). tried everything to fix, but still not working... please help

I have a 6th gen ipod nano that is not recognized by itunes on my PC (Windows 7). I get an error that it 'could not be identified properly'. I have tried all tips on the apple site to correct the problem, including unistalling and reinstalling itunes twice. Nothing works. Has anyone tried something that worked that is not part of the Apple support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3218)? Thank you in advance for any help!

  • Ipod nano 1st gen is not recognized in itunes 10

I updated my computer system to leopard 10.5.8 as well as the latest itunes 10. I bought a new ipod nano 6th gen, and it syncs and works fine. The problem I have is my old Ipod. It is detected by my power mac on the desktop only the icon it has is a folder, and when I open it is in blank. I open Itunes 10 and it doesn't appear. And I tried to follow the instructions on apple support, tried all ports, tried reseting the ipod, and it is still not showing up on itunes. Can someone help me with this please?
Also, a white line showed up on the screen, does that mean the screen is broken? I can still see everything going on normally on the ipod but not where the line comes up (middle of the screen).
