I messed up my mac...Halp.

So. I tried to change my home folder name on my mac. A tutorial told me to create a new admin account then use terminal and type
'sudo ... ... ... 'oldshortname' 'newusername''
Something like that.
I then had 2 admin user acc's that looked completely new and all my settings lost e.g. wallpapers, login options etc etc.
The original user file was in some sub folders and I had to verify each folder with my old user acc details but all my custome boot settings lost.
After all this confusion I decided to create 1 admin acc and try to just get all my settings restored.
Below is a screenshot of the current files;

I want to restore my mac using 'MacBook' as the time machine file and the blue highlighted 'jonathanbartlett' user file as the main user under the 'users' folder.
If you can shed anylight on this please help.
Jonathan

Well, I think you may be able to move your 'JohnathanBartlett" folder into your "Users" folder, create an admin user with that name and hopefully be okay.
If you're playing around in the Terminal with Sudo and taking screen shots, you're probably an Advanced User (or on your way to becoming one).  For the sake of anyone who reads this post who is new to Macs, let me explain my answer...
First, I would take a look in that "JohnathanBartlett" folder and see if the contents of the folder match what you have on your computer.  If so, I would copy and paste it to your desktop (for backup).
Then I would open System Preferences (in the Apple Menu, top left of the screen) and go to Accounts.  To make changes, you may need to click the lock icon and type in your password.  If there is a "JohnathanBartlett" user on the computer, delete him by choosing that user name, and clicking the "minus (-)" icon..  In the popup window, tick the option to delete the home folder.
Paste the "JohnathanBartlett" folder back into the "Users" folder, and add that user back to your computer by clicking the "plus (+)" icon.  When you choose the Account Name, you can use "Johnathan Bartlett" with a space.  The short name is what's important.  Make sure it stays "johnathanbartlett."  When you click "OK" a screen will pop up that acknowledges there's already a home folder with that name, and asks if you would like to use it.  Say yes and your problems should be solved.  If all went well, you should be able to log out as the current user, and log in as "johnathanbartlett."
Before you close System Preferences, make sure you tick the box that says, "Allow User to Administer this Computer."
I like to keep at least two accounts on all of the computers I administer, one for the main user and one for an Zadmin.  (I chose Zadmin because it comes up last on the list of users.)  Even if the primary user is admin, I like to have a second Admin user (even on my home computer).  Sometimes our girls have problems that only affect one user.  It's handy to have another Admin account you can log into and fix specific user problems.
That doesn't really have anything to do with your problem, it's just a side note opinion piece.
Let me know how your home folder works out!

    Hello everyone
I've recently messed up my Mac OS X Lion by deleting Aperture, but I need to get my data out of the computer. I've tried to repair it using DU, but it said I needed to backup all my data and reinstall the OS. How do I backup my data to an external drive?
And by the way, I've got an important project in Final Cut Pro X. Is there any way I can back it up (including fxs and positions of the clip) ?
Hope you guys can help me!

You need to back up 2 folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects which by default are located on your Movies Folder. You can always check by clicking on a clip inside Fianl Cut X and selecting Show in Finder in the contextual menu for the selected clip.

  • I think I messed up my mac install by installing windows 8

Yesterday I tried to install Windows 8 on a Mac Mini using boot camp. I am new to Macs so when the windows installer told me it could not install to the Boot Camp created partition because it was not NTFS, I told it to wipe the partition and install it to the blank partition. Now I can run Windows 8 but nothing I do lets me back in to OSx. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you "messed up" your Mac.
Read the Boot Camp guide and then install using Boot Camp Assistant. But first, you need to repartition and format that hard drive and reinstall OS X and your other apps and data to it; hopefully you have a very recent backup.

  • I have the most messed up iTunes/Mac ever at the moment.

Hello. This is going to take a while to explain, but thank you in advance if you are brace enough to tackle this problem.
    This is how it started..
I had an itunes library already and it was perfectly sorted etc. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes in terms of music folders etc, but in itunes it looked great. Then I took some music off my friends mac. Basically I wasn't thinking at the time so I should dragged and dropped whatever I wanted into myhardrive without creating a folder or anything (Like i said i wasn't thinking). Then when it came to putting the new (1000 songs approx) onto my laptop I stupidly just command + A'd my entire harddrive and copy and pasted it into itunes. So needless to say everything in my harddrive, like my past back ups of my mac etc, went into my itunes. It took hours to transfer over by which time i was starting to realise my mistake and sobbed whilst leaving it on over night to finish transferring.
Anyway thats the first catalyst in the construction of this mess..The plot, unfortunately, thickens.
My itunes obviously had ALOT of duplicates and through running a little experiment with a song i didnt care about losing i noticed that if you 'display duplicates' and delete all the duplicates this doesnt leave ANY copies of the song in itunes, which is beyond annoying and almost makes the feature redundant, for my needs anyway. I also had all the random mac 'sounds' and random things that shouldnt have been in itunes due to me copying EVERYTHING from my harddrive into poor itunes.
So I recruited some help from a friend. This was his plan: Delete everything in itunes, go back on time machine and back up itunes from there so i was back to the position i was in before transferring everything from the harddrive and then going back into my harddrive and importing the music in a more organised, less hasty manner. So he backed up my itunes as it was just incase something went wrong. This took a good half hour and he named the folder 'new old itunes'. Then he deleted the contents of itunes and went backin itunes to my last back up and restored itunes. However this is where things start to go more wrong. There was lots of stuff missing, as if the back up hadnt worked. Like the albums would be incomplete etc. So we went into the folder mentioned above 'new old itunes' and in there too there was music missing. If you clicked on an album it would be empty or only have 3 tracks when there should be like 15 or whatever.
Anyway he had to go, so i started doing some investigating and the music is still on my mac, just in random folders. so one particular song for instance wouldnt be in my itunes, wouldnt be in the back up, wouldnt be in the 'old new itunes' but if i searched for the track name in finder i would find it in other folders.
I know im getting a bit sketchy on the finer details but im not 100% what my friend did, this isnt his fault just itunes and mac acting funky but its even worse now. Anyway I seem to have multiple copies of lots of music. The music from the import that messed everything up is still on my mac in random places and needless to say, due to all these duplicates all over the place, my mac is full to the brim so i need to delete stuff but am unsure of what is safe to delete!
There is probably stuff i have missed out that if you suggest something to me i might reply saying that i have tried that and explain why it didnt work, please dont think im being rude. I've spent many hours trying to sort this and i think i have probably inadvertently messed it up more! I have delete the folder mentioned above, but it is still in my trash so could get it again, but as mentioned it is incomplete anyway.
If someone has any clue how to solve this i would be very very grateful, im so sad about it. I like having my itunes all nice!
Basically i want all the music, pre-mess up and all the new music on my harddrive to be in my itunes all nice and stuff.
Many thanks in advance and I'm sorry that its a long one and ive been lacking in grammar and punctuation alot.

Well, indeed that does not sound like a fun situation to be in. But, it is VERY good you are using Time Machine.
Let me explain, that there are two options when it comes to storing files in iTunes. When you import files, it will either leave the file in its original location on the hard drive and iTunes will know its location, or it will copy the file and store it in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/, IF you have the option enabled titled "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."
I imagine you have it set to copy everything into the iTunes Media folder, which explains why your hard drive is filling up. Otherwise no extra space would have been taken up.
    Therefore, my recommendation is this:
Quit iTunes first. Then navigate to ~/Music in Finder, then Enter Time Machine. Restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder in that location from a previous backup that occurred BEFORE this whole thing happened. Depending on how much space you have left on your hard drive, it may be wise to first delete the entire current iTunes folder. The restore could take a long time, depending on how much data you have in iTunes.
This will guarantee you get back to a previous library, exactly as it was at that date and time. Yes, it may be a bit overkill but it is by far the simplest solution. Hope that works!

  • Itunes 12.1 is messing up my mac !

So this started about three days ago when I decided to update my Itunes to 12.1 and then for about a day or so it was completely fine it is just recently it has been messing up and randomly starting songs in a random order and it does this constantly now and it is difficult to study or do anything practically and I have looked everywhere for a fix but no luck, and it just happens randomly, it opens itunes then plays a song or maybe even a second or two of a song then just continues to switch, I have bluetooth turned off and it normally happens when I have my apple headphones plugged in but they don't have buttons on them and right now as i'm writing this it is happening, it disrupts me during class at school and at home, I dont know if it is happening to anyone but it is annoying, my mac is only a year old.
    Please help if you can

Hi, this sounds so odd.  Does it also do it when you do not have your headphones plugged in? if it doesn;t then i would check my headphones for a fault. do you have iTunes open? does it open iTunes?
hopefully we can get to the bottom of this, strange that it now happens after the update. the other obvious things to re-instal iTunes

  • Best Buy messed up online mac mini order

I ordred a Apple Mac Mini, an Apple wireless keyboard and an Apple wirless mouse and my order was unavailable for pick up three hours later! I place the order at 5:53 call the store at 6:30 to ask where my order is and they didn't know. after talking to a customer service rep name Shelby who is very rude with me and gave me no information about my order except that they were having processing issues with their own credit card company. I asked to speak to a manager when I called back the second time it took them 25 minutes just to get Amanda on the phone.
I asked the store manager Amanda if she could please help me figure out why I can't pick up my order and she said that their credit card processing department was backed up all day long and that a new team apparently was coming on at 7:45 pm?
anyways after being on the phone for almost 2 hours with them I'm still here without my order, The manager suggested I could just cancel my order and they could sell me the stuff off the shelf but that wouldn't tell me having to wait for an $805 credit to my bank account which could be the middle of next week so I told her this was not an option. The reason I place my order for online pick up was so that I could bring my product home today not have to wait overnight into the next day for an order.
The service ive been given at this Best Buy location is absolutely reprehensible. The funds in my account are gone but I sit here without a product, how is this possible? I will never purchase from BB again...

  • Upgrade has messed up my mac

Mac asked me to upgrade to Firefox 8.0 now I can't access anything.

adobe flash forced me to do an update and broke my laptop.  had to buy a new operating system because computers don't come with software anymore and i never made a back up disc.  now I am having problems using the internet and it keeps freezing up and videos are glitchy most of the time or freeze ever since I was forced to do another update on adobe flash.  customer service is a joke and you would be better off throwing your computer out the window and buying a new one or reinstalling your OS.  too bad there are no other programs I could use or I would.  would love to sue these dumb***   people who keep making a terrible program that does nothing but cause you problems.

  • Updating Firefox messed up my Mac

When I updated Firefox, my Mac started acting weird. First Mail started rrunning very slowly and then Safari. After I rebooted, all of my cons in the Dock went back to the original Default setting. I do not know how to get my old Mac back!

WZZZ - Sorry I took so long to reply. Safari kept crashing. I finally got it running after 2 re-boots.  The problem may be coincidental, but all I know is that only change I made to my system lately was to update Firefox. I opened Firefox and was advised on the web page that there was a new version to download. I don't know what number I had but presume that the download was for the newest version. Within an hour of updating, my Mail started running really slowly (lots of spinning icon) and it would not let me open some of the older e-mails. And it wouldn't let me delete them either. Safari started running slowly and today it would not open without crashing "stopped unexpectedly".

  • Help!  Minecraft messed up my mac!

So the kids were playing minecraft on full screen today and something happened.  They couldn't get out of it, so I did the control+option+escape and got out of it, but now my fonts are all messed up and the screen is too large.  How can I fix this?  Thanks!

    Did you restart the computer?
Depending on your os, System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing - Make sure zoom is off.

  • Resetting PRAM Messed Up My Mac!! :(

Noticed a couple of problem's after resetting mu PRAM. After I reset my PRAM my subwoofer no longer works as it did before I reset my PRAM and when I power up my Mac Pro Tower it stars and then when it's starting it chimes and does another "restart".
Before I reset my PRAM it would just start up once and not restart. What's going On? And what is NVAM? Do I need to reset that too?
    Please help.

Ok, so resetting PRAM and NVRAM are done at the same time, so in that case I did it and that's when this problem started. Loss of Subwoofer and Computer chime and restart after powering upp the computer.
Anyone got any idea what's going on here? This is getting frustrating!

New to using this format of problem solving, if I'm not in the right place, please let me know.
I somehow have deleted or trashed or misplaced Adobe Reader on my Mac.  I've tried to download it again, but I can only get to the third screen where it says where it will be installed and it just shows it's processing.  I've tried this multiple times, leaving it for several hours even - it still shows the little processing logo.  Do I need to uninstall something?  Where to I begin?

  • Facetime settings messed up on Mac!

When I try to logon to mace time from my Mac (Yosemite) it won't, jut sits there trying to login, whirring!
If I try to access preferences it says I need to login first ... ok, try to login again ... Frustrating!
When I try to login to FaceTime it just whirs and does nothing, never logs in, any AppleID and user account on the mac.
FaceTime seems to be screwed, I've updated from Mavericks to Yosemite ,same problem. I've checked google & tried everything I can see, DNS, time settings, etc. I would turn off FaceTime and back on but you need to do that from preferences ... and I can't get to that!
    Messages is exactly the same.
Sometimes it says FaceTime could not log on, check your network settings but they are fine and everything else works!
A new account on the mac does the same thing. The apple ID works from another mac!
    Any ideas?
Can I remove all Factime/messages settings and set them from scratch?
    Many thanks
    Dave

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait for it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 5
Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 6
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 10
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound outputand Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 11
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 12
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 13
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    Step 14
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 15
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support. When you set up a support call, select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with, not the hardware model. That way, if you're not under AppleCare, you may be able to talk your way out of being charged for the call.

  • How to find which application is messing with my mac.

    OK.
After 4 times zero out data and re-installing the OS, tens of hours searching, I found out that
the reason why my macbook pro late 2009 was getting beach ball of death is because of a 3rd party application. 1 week ago I re-installed the OS again and I didn't install anything else. My mac is running great with zero applications. Now, after a week I can't stand waiting anymore. I need some applications. How shall I install so I will be able to detect the corrupted one ??

Martin's given you very good advice. My own 2 cents would be...
Live without the cleaning apps, the only "cleaning" your Mac needs, is the display with a soft cloth
Limewire is worse than using using a public toilet seat!
Tucan, I have no experience with but if it's bit-torrent, I'd leave it alone also.

  • Did a friend's router mess up my Mac?

OK so I went away to stay with a friend for a few days and took my MBP with me. My own internet connection is very fast, and I have never had any probs connecting to anything.
While I was away I plugged into my friend's router. I noticed she had an extremely slow connection. Loading a wb page - ANY web page - took a veeeeeeery long time.
Then I came home and plugged in my MBP to my own router. To my horror, everything has now become as slow as it was on my friend's router.
I called my ISP and they ran all kinds of tests. Said everything was fine at their end.
    What has gone wrong?

    William,
Turning off IPv6 made no difference.
As for my DNS - that was all verified as OK by my ISP as we talked through the issues on the phone and checked at the settings.
What I'm really looking for is the opinions of other ppl who have actually experienced this or something like it, and how they resolved it.
