I messed up permissions for Library Folder

I was looking for the Library/Java Folder in my user account (which has admin privileges), but couldn't find it. I then found it visible in the administrator's account--my user account did not have read/write, so I added it and gave myself read/write. Seeing the number of sub-folders in Java, I chose the "apply to all contents" option. I see now that this is the last thing on earth I'd want to do. For now, I am not able to "see" the Java Folder at all under any account.
I tried using the Utilities>Disk Utility>Repair Disk Permissions trick, which I saw in a different thread, but I see no difference after having done that.
I would appreciate any help in 1. Correcting Permissions on my Library Folder and 2. Understanding how to correctly change permissions so that certain users (in addition to the administrator's account) have access to these folders.
Thanks.

No--I don't have a backup...yet. But am seeing that I should do that. I see from other threads that a script could be written--is this a possibility for me?
Thanks.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

  • Can't install on windows 7 get message - the folder is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder

Have tried to install Itunes on laptop running 32 bit Windows 7 - it says it installed successfully but then when I click to open I get the message "the folder is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."

You will have to descripe where the drive is and much more.
Then go and look at the drive and folder and who has group ownership policy and more.
It would have to be a guess, plus "20 questions" but why post here? when there are Snow Leopard, iMac, and of course, iTunes, Community forums.

  • Not able to open itunes - "The Folder I tunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder"

I have unintalled and reinstalled several times, just suddenly stopped working. I have windows 7, have for awhile. I get the following message:  The Folder I tunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder"
I had an existing account that i am no longer able to access.
I got one email suggesting right click and run as program administrator, tried it and did not work. Also went into permissions folder and ensured was listed as program administrator.
    Help and Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chris,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your issue. When you say a "different server", if you mean that you recently changed the location where iTunes was storing its files (local or otherwise), you may find the following article helpful:

  • Permissions for Applications folder

I think that my permissions in the Applications folder are not right. I first noticed this when trying to upgrade/update software. In the past, I've just dragged and dropped the new software to the folder, where it replaces the old software. I get a dialog asking if I want to replace the item, I say yes, and that's that. Now, I get the dialog asking if I want to replace, but it is followed by a message saying that I don't have sufficient permissions.
I can manually drag the old item to the trash and delete it, then drag the new item into the folder. This makes no sense to me and I would like to be able to just replace the old with the new as I did before.
Checking the permissions with Get Info I see that I am designated as one of two "everyone" groups and I have "custom access". All of the items within Applications shows 4 groups/names:
    everyone (custom)
    system (read write)
    admin (read write)
    everyone (read only)
Yes, there are two "everyone" with different settings. I haven't figured out how to tell what the custom settings are, but there is a notation that "You have custom access".
I have tried manually resetting permissions for the entire folder. That didn't work. It appeared to be changing permissions, but nothing actually changed.
I tried logging in as root, but found that even there I could not delete any names/groups or change permissions for items in the Applications folder.
    Questions:
Shouldn't I have full access to everything as root?
How do I change permissions for items in Applications so that I can replace them without having to manually drag items to trash then manually drag the replacement into the folder?
When did Mac's permissioning become as arcane and convoluted as Windows?
Sorry, ignore that last one. This has been a very frustrating journey for me.

Thank you! That worked. Here's the report:
I issued the Terminal commands you suggested in the other thread you linked to.
I then ran Disk Utility's Repair Permissions. It took about 30 minutes and returned 799,331 legitimate permissions errors, which it fixed. All were in the Applications folder.
I ran Disk Utility again and got no permissions errors. I did get some ACL errors in:

  • Default permissions on /Library folder?

I'm having a permissions problem here. I'm trying to reinstall a couple of games from Gamehouse and when they first run they (apparently) need to write a file to the /Library/Application_support folder. Now they all generate an error saying I need to be an admin user (I am) or repair permissions (I have several times, including booting from the 10.5 dvd and running repair from that).
I checked the settings and on TWO different macs both with a recent format/install of 10.5 the permissions are as follows:
    /Library
    system (r/w), admin (r/w), everyone (r only)
    /Library/Application Support
system (r/w), admin (r only), everyone (r only)
ALL of the folders inside the main Library folder are set with the admin user being read only.
On a Tiger machine here, all of the folders in the main Library folder are set with admin user being read/write.
So... has the default permissions changed in 10.5 or do I somehow have an exactly the same wierd issue on 2 different macs?
Thanks if anyone can shed light on this.

after running DU, the permissions on /Library/Application Support are still:
    system r/w, admin r-only, everyone r-only
Is this what they are supposed to be? If so, it creates a problem for some installers apparently. If not, I need to find out what changed them incorrectly on mine and fix it. Again, on a Tiger system the admin user has r/w privs on the app support folder... on Leopard its read-only.

  • I got a problem on installing iTune-64bit on WIndows 7, error message says the folder "itunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.

I got a problem on running the iTune 64bit on Windows 7, error message says " the folder "itunes" is on a locked disk or your do not have write permission for this folder.    Any one ran into this problem ?
    It worked before.

Open Disk Utility via Spotlight or in the Applications folder stored within the Utilities folder. Close all applications and 3rd party software and choose "Repair Disk Permissions." Reboot the computer when finished, and test to see if the issue is resolved.

  • Help, I messed up permissions for external HDD

    Hi people.
Here's the deal. My external 160 GB LaCie-drive (same type of drive that Emmet posted about recently) is divided into two partitions; one that I want to keep public and one that I back-up my private things to.
Now I had a whim about permissions and realized that if I would change permissions on "group" to exclude "everyone" yet still keeping myself set to "read and write", maybe I could keep other users from being able to read the files on that partition when logged in.
Well, it didn't quite work the way I wanted. Couldn't read any file on that partition (each folder claimed to be empty) and I couldn't change back the permissions. So I removed it from my desktop and now when I plug it back in, only the first partition shows up.
In Disk Utilities both drives show up, but the second one (the one I manipulated) has the standard unidentified file icon, and claims to be empty (when I click "Info"). There is nothing wrong with the drive itself, obviously, since the repaircheck says the drive is without errors.
So my question is What do I do? Is there like a UNIX-command for fixing the permissions or something?
    Would appreciate help.

    enigma
Not that bad I think. Start the terminal and type the following:
    sudo chown -R youruser_name:your_username /Volumes/Florenz
substitute the "yourusername" part of the above with your actual user name. Press return, key in your password and press return again. Then type:
    sudo chmod -R u=rwx /Volumes/Florenz
    Press return and then:
    sudo chmod -R go=--- /Volumes/Florenz
Press return. This should return the ownership of the drive to you with read, write and execute privileges but nothing to group and others.
You messed things up by changing the group to "everyone".

  • I can't open itunes, "itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder" shows up. How to fix?

Please give step by step directions to fix this. Thank you very much for your help and support.

Sorry for responding that late, it wouldn't show in my list as an active thread with a response from you, just posted another thread and saw it.
For some reason I had more iTunes folders with iTunes library on my machine and couldn't find them all at first.
I'm on mac, so then instead of the regular Spotlight (searching program) I used "Find" option from the finder and found more of those folders. Changed all the permissions and it worked. That's why I don't really know which one was responsible and where it resides..
I hope you resolved your problem in the mean time.
