I need a 2 way sync tool for the mac (or a shell script and some help)

I am looking for a way to (two way) sync a folder on my Macbook Pro with a SMB Server (aka Windows)
I found a few paid for applications that do this, and before I buy one I thought I'd ask here and see if there are any recommendations.
So far I've found Synk Standard and ChronoSync.
I assume this could also be hacked together with Automator and some shell scripts, but I'm not sure how I'd do that.

yes, Chronosync is often recommended for this kind of thing. Never heard of Synk Standard. you can also do it for free with rsync but I suggest you stick with Chronosync.

PDF Search, but I think is not the best way to search because it shows too much useless results.

It is powerful and easy to use.
    • What is missing?
A way of editing the DVD Project Source Code. Let me explain: in some big projects I just need to change the Jump from "button_1" to "button_2", and to do that I need to find the button under my menus and choose it from a list. If I can just type "2" instead of "1" it will be faster and error-free.
Advancing in this idea, if I can open the entire link list as a Source Code in TextEdit, I can see all the buttons and link all of them without seeking for each on menus.
Today the Connections Tab helps a lot, but I still need to find the button un the menus. With 5 or 4 menus is easy, but sometimes I have 50...

  • Do I need to give up on Acrobat for the Mac?

I am using Acrobat Professional 8.1.2 on an Intel Mac with OSX 10.5.2. Under Office 2004, I am unable to get documents through the Distiller properly. Two examples:
    i) I have a one page Excel file that has a couple hyperlinks in it. Distiller starts, the progress bar gets about 80% of the way across, and then it just stops. No error messages or crashes, it just stops and sits there until I eventually hit the "cancel" button.
ii) I have a 200+ page Word file that has no links or anything - I just want to convert it to a simple pdf file. Distiller starts, but runs at a rate of about 1 page every 2-3 seconds; simply too slow to deal with.
If I start Parallels (with Office 2003 and Acrobat Standard for Windows), the same files convert very quickly with no issues whatsoever.
I realize that Office itself is contributing to issues on the Mac versus under Windows, but does the Mac version of Acrobat really have that many issues or am I doing something wrong?

You are correct - the Mac version is not as powerful as the Windows
version in respect of PDF Makers and Office integration.
However, have you tried going to Advanced / Document Processing / Create
    Links ..
This option is often overlooked for URLs which describe themselves ...

  • Which tools for the Mac support Secure Erase (SE)

Note: I'm not talking about what Disk Utility allows you do to go by overriting data. I'm talking about a full wipe of areas not usually accessible by the user. For instance the X-25M like any other ATA device supports SECURE_ERASE which will erase more than just the data area of the drive.
So far HDDERASE for the PC is the only tool I know of that issues this command.
Is there any C code that exists that issues this command that allows this command to be issued on Macs and machines that don't support what's called "legacy IDE mode?"

The most secure is zeroing an entire hard drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1820
Note it won't work on hard drives that have been partitioned. Therefore it really does the ENTIRE hard drive.

Often, I much prefer that to the Manual, though the Search function is very clunky. Search for Nest for example and you'll get about 50 listings for the table of contents and indexes alone, when all I would really want is the explanation of how to actually create a Nest.
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Final

    Search.
    • What do you like about it most?
Ease of use to get through the manual instead of going through the books themselves.
    • What is missing?
Better organization of the search results. Again, if I search Nests, make the first set of results the answers that actually show me how to use the tool, not the 50 times it appears in the table of contents and indexes.
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or

Just crack the app open and start. Use websites like the Creative Cow for more input and ideas.
    • Did you use the Final Cut Pro Getting Started book
to familiarize yourself with Final Cut Pro? If so, do
you feel the book provided a good introduction to the

I thought the Tutorial that came with my first copy of FCP (Version 2.0) was outstanding at introducing me to the interface and how FCP operated. I came from Media 100 and in particular, the Log and Capture operation was completely different than what I was used to.
    • What do you think is the most difficult
feature/concept to grasp in Final Cut Pro?
Media Manager. Not sure why it has to be so convoluted. Media 100 was too easy with this one. Select the Sequence to be up-rez'd, set your new format and capture.
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had
with the Final Cut Pro documentation?
Search results using the Help menu.
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
Actually both. If the electronic search gets too frustrating, I'll pull the print manual out to find what I really need.
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you
    think we should explore?
Not really. Internet based help is always nice, but I don't keep my FCP workstations connected to the web so that would actually create a bigger hassle for us.
    • What size computer display do you typically use to

you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280
    x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    Highest resolution for that monitor.

    Yes. 23 & 17" on one G5. 20 & 17" on the 2nd G5. 17" Powerbook

  • I need a Wireless G Internet Camera for the MAC

I would like to buy a mac compatible Wireless G Internet Camera. Ive found lots of PC/Windoze ones but no mac ones... I would like it to be under $100 street price like all the PC cams...
    Any help?
    Thanks guys!

The important factor that I found for compatibility is that the camera's web server needs to be Java based, and not rely on any ActiveX Microsoft technologies. It can then be used by any browser in MacOS, Windows, and Linux.
About 4 years ago I bought a D-Link DCS-900W for around $200. It worked well out in the barn while my wife was waiting for a mare to foal. Friends all over the web were able to tune in and check out the situation.
Currently, I've seen that the D-Link DCS-920 Wireless G is available from the usual suspects all over the internet for between $70 to $90.
We found that the camera's work well if they are in a well lighted area. Low light cameras can get pricey. Don't expect real motion high def, especially if you are pushing the wireless distance limit.

  • Splitter-Joiner for the Mac?

I need to do a quick hack job on an existing MPEG file. I'd rather not convert it to an avi then back MPEG. In the PC world, there are several programs available that will split MPEG files without decoding them, but so far I haven't found anything for the Mac. Basically I made and error rendering a file in FCP and no longer have the source material. I need to chop several seconds off the begining and end.

  • Framemaker for the Mac. WHY NOT?

I have a Mac and use the Creative Suite software on it. Yet, when I went to go find FrameMaker, I have found it is ONLY available for the PC. Why?
So I go look for a solution and find that FrameMaker 7 is the last version available for the Mac. Ok, I still have my G4 as well. So I figured I will look to get a copy of v7 then. Nope, can't find it on the Adobe site. Not only that, but it's a pain in the "blank" to find a viable copy to puchase other than on amazon for $4K.
If Adobe is going to stop making a version of their software then I can understand the cut. But to stop making it for one system and not the other? At the very least, you could continue to keep support for, and make available (at a reduced price hopefully), your older version for the Mac (or PC if you cancel a PC version of something), so that users can still use the software if they have the system to use it.
A huge amout of Mac people use your software. Apple computers are still looked at to be the BEST graphics hardware around to run. So when someone thinks "graphics" often, the Apple computer is what comes to mind. When they think Games, the PC. One is for work, the other for play, when it comes to Graphics. So, what's with cutting Apple off for FrameMaker.
So I have a suggestion/request. IF your going to keep a software package going for one system, and not the other. Then at the very least, keep the Last Version of the software for the other alive and supported.
You have FrameMaker for the PC. V12.
You stopped for the Mac with V7.
Go back and resupport, and sell V7 to the Mac folks (at a reduced price since it is older). Then, if possible, get V13 or 14, or what ever, updated to work on the Mac and PC. Then, offer the Mac folks the upgrage pricing to go from 7 to 13 (or 14, or what ever).
For those anti-mac people - For the record, I am fully experienced using both the PC and Mac. I own a mac and prefer the Mac for all my Graphics Needs. So please don't suggest I get rid of my Mac and get a PC. Won't happen.

    > The old Mac code is too old to port to current machines.
It's not just a codebase problem. It's a platform market problem.
Frame's ostensible competitor has a codebase that's some 15 years younger, and it's also Windows-only (and somewhat arrogantly oblivious about it - they don't even tell you what platform you must have to run their stuff).
The question becomes one of: what are the demographics of future content-creator platforms? Some of the platforms that FM used to run on (various Unix RISCs) are now entirely gone. The abortive port to Linux failed to become a product (might have been intended to fail). Desktop Mac may or may not be a key part of future Apple plans.
Windows, alas, is being massively bungled by Microsoft, who arguably accelerated the demise of the desktop PC with Windows 8. A c|net news article today is headlined "New Microsoft VP consigns the PC to irrelevance". Well, you know who to thank for that, Mr. Elop. Sure, content consumer computing is increasingly ISA- and OS-agnostic. Consumer code needs to run on ARM and x86, on at least 3 different OS'es.
Adobe is in the content creator business for revenue products. Creator development/authoring platforms are no longer the same as consumer platforms. Adobe needs to keep an eye on where this is all headed, and needs a Plan B in case MS continues to screw up desktop Windows. If CS and TS were to be ported to a second platform, it's not clear that Mac is the optimal target. It might be to Linux again (whether Android or some other distro is an open question), perhaps on ARM-64. Does Linux have CMYK model yet? or color management?

  • Announcing the Audition for the Mac public beta

We are very pleased to announce that Adobe Audition for the Mac is now available for public beta. (You can see the press release here.) We encourage you to give it a try and provide us with feedback.
Audition will be shipped on both Windows and Mac OS when the time  comes, but given that Mac OS is a new platform for Audition it is  important we gather as much feedback and testing as possible in order to  make this is a great product for all users.
Visit the Adobe Audition Labs page for download information and more details: http://www.adobe.com/go/audition_labs.

Okay, some answers. Yes, this is only a Mac beta. This is simply because no version of Audition for the Mac has ever been released, and it appears to be Mac-based comments they are looking for at present.
The press release is still there - it hasn't been withdrawn because it's effectively out in the wild now - what would be the point of withdrawing it? Anyway, in it is the line " Adobe is providing audio editors and video professionals with more choices for audio production". So it's very clear that how this is achieved is an issue, at least - it has to be to fulfil the intention of that statement. But in the present beta release, integration is not present, as you have discovered. I can't comment any more about that, and I'm not sure that the staffers can either - we are all under a degree of gagging about anything that isn't in the press release, or Jason Levine's video, pretty much.
If you want to find out a bit more than you will on this forum about some of the new audio-related aspects of the release, then read or participate in the AudioMasters thread about it - here. If you read the thread, you will find out why...

  • I need a larger capacity Hard drive for my Mac book pro, what do I do?

I am running out of space on my hard drive, what do I do?

Well in short, there are two ways to solve this:
    A) clean up your harddisk
    B) buy a bigger harddisk and replace the internal with it
    Details:
    A) clean up your harddisk:
Empty trash can, delete unused apps (with a tool like AppDelete), Get rid of old data (by using a tool like WhatSize to identify the biggest space suckers) and/or delete unused videos, photos and music...
    B) buy a bigger harddisk and replace the internal with it:
First put your new HD in an external enclosure and plug it into your MBP either over USB or Firewire. If not already formated for a Mac: use diskutility to format and partition it with GUID boot and a single or more partitions (volumes) just as you have it on your orginial HD just bigger in size... ;-)
Then you will need a tool like SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to clone your existing harddisk onto the new one (all volumes if you had more than one).
Once done try to boot from your new external HD by selecting the startvolume in system settings or by holding the "alt" (option) key while powering up, then select the external HD to boot and try it out.
If all works, power of all and open your MBP and swap the hardisks. See http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Hard-Drive-Repl acement/3030/1 on how to do it (that link is actually for a 15" MBP from mid 2010).
Boot normally an check if all is well
Place the original HD in the external enclosure and use it as an externel HD extension or as a partial backup disk (as it is smaller compared to your new HD)
I hope I was clear enough on all steps, if not feel free to ask again.
    Regards from Switzerland

It won't be a problem if you delete your extra copies.
I don't download very much to my tv, I do sometimes if I'm in bed but usually I do it from itunes. However if you have not fully downloaded something to the tv it is possible to start the download from itunes as well, you have likely activated 'check for downloads fin itunes in some way, could be by opening itunes, selecting 'check or downloads' from the advanced menu or that you simply have automatically check for downloads set in your prefs and it has checked coincidentally.

I'm using apple's bluetooth keyboard and I need an easy way to switch between the text and numbers fields instead of tapping on the screen

    While not in edit mode:
    - if start typing numbers, then it enters number mode.
    - if start typing text, then it enters text mode.
Using the arrow keys exits edit mode. So this should work for you:
1 Type text into a cell, which enters text mode.
2 Press Return to move to the next cell.
3 Press right arrow key to exit edit mode.
4 Press left arrow key to get back to the cell.
5 Type a number, which enters number mode.
Another method that requires more planning ahead of time is to format the cells as text or number before starting the data entry. Then when you navigate to a cell while in edit mode, you will be in the appropriate mode (without having to exit edit mode).
This all works fine for me. Hopefullly it does for you also.

  • Need a Firehand Lightning emulator for the Mac

My daughter's wedding pictures were put together by the photographer with a program called Firehand Lightning. Is there an emulator for the Mac for this software? The photographer has given permission for me to use an emulator to open these pictures.

Ya, he's giving you the BS treatment.  After doing a bit more reading, Firehand basically allows someone to take a set of pictures they have and package them together in a single .exe file that becomes a sort of slideshow presentation.  You need to go back and read what your contract with this photographer said, because if you paid him to take pictures and provide you with those pictures for said price, then he needs to provide those pics to you.  If the contract read something along the lines of you're paying him to take pics which he will provideo to you in an album or slideshow encapsulation for said price, then you're hosed because he's basically getting away with charging you for doing half-*** work really.  Any professional photographer should be giving his/her clients full rez JPEGs of the work they're doing and getting paid for, not some bundled junk presentation/slideshow, unless you asked for that specifically.  Either way, you need to go read your contract with him/her.  If you didn't have one, then you need to confront him/her with your demands.  Paying an additional $1500 just for him/her to take some pics off a card and put them on a CD or DVD for you is outrageous and ground for taking him to small claims court in my book... unless a contract was signed or verbally agreed upon that allowed him to swindle you because you didn't understand what he was selling you on.
