I need a DVD reader/writer to connect to my iMac

I need to add a DVD reader/writer to connect to my new iMac.
Any suggestions or good things to know?
Janice

You can buy cheap optical drives or more expensive ones that may or may not last longer.
I prefer tray loading drives over slot loading drives as the discs don't jam in tray loading drives and the loading mechanisms in slot loading drives can have issues and be problematic.
I would look at various optical drives from the OWC ( macsales.com).

  • ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0??

Hi, one of the largest online selling and buying website in New Zealand, trademe, has listed via a buyer a ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0. One of my friend bought it and found that it is shown on the computer hard drve as a Philips DVD RAM SDVD 8821 HUSB. The buyer claimed that it is a genuine product bought from IBM shop. I am asking if there is a possibility for that to happen? If it is a fake product of IBM, is my friend liable to buying fake stuff. I think she was duped to think it is a genuine product. I asked this question via the IBM Australia. The respondent told me the model number was "Part Number - 43N3264". I had a search on google and the part number of the leveno external drive is not similar to the one I bought from the online shop. Mine one has got the logo of "thinkpad" on the bottom right hand corner. Whereas the external drive with the part number 43N3264 had the logo of leveno on the bottom left hand side. That's why I need to ask you in this inquiry. Intuitively, I don't think "thinkpad" has manufactured external drive. It has only been used as laptop models. Thanks for your attention.

there are several fake ones on the market, some are well made while others are not.
AFAIK the genuine one don't have a thinkpad logo, but rather a Lenovo logo.

  • DVD read/writer Question

I'm so sorry if this has been asked, but here I go anyways. I got my iBook G4 as a gift a bit over a year ago, therefore I didn't really have any control over certain situations. My CD drive does not allow me to burn [write] DVDs. I know this is because it was bought without that feature. Is there anyway to send my iBook to Apple and have them replace my drive with a DVD read/writer? How expensive would this be? Would it just be cheaper to buy and external one from LaCie? Thank you so much for any info!

No doubt it would be cheaper to add an External like a Lacie or one from any number of manufactures
You can if you choose have a new CD/DVD Drive and burner installed and there are several different vendors that will do this for you or you can do it your self.

  • Can I use a USB superdrive DVD reader/writer with a mac pro?

The internal CD/DVD read/writer in my macpro (2 x 2.66 ghz dual-core xeon) broke, so I purchased an external USB superdrive, thinking I could use it as an external drive. It does nothing when plugged into the mac pro, I cant even insert a disk. It seems to not even have power.
Anyway I now see the device (superdrive) is intended for a macbook air or mac mini.
Am I toast? Is there no way I can get this thing to work with the mac pro?
I dont think I can return it, I've already discarded all the packaging.
    Thanks for any advice.

I agree it would not take a lot of time, 2 minutes perhaps for the world record holder, for me more like 10 perhaps, not including the time involved in purchasing the drive, figuring out how to recycle the old broken one that comes out, etc.
However the key point is that if I can get this drive to work, the cost will be $0, as I've already paid for it. So I would be most interested in doing that, if possible. If it's not possible, then I'll have no choice to pay $30 or however much, for a new one.

  • Need to set read/write permissions to ALL subfolders

So I have a clients folder created on the server, and workgroup with employees setup to access the shared clients folder. You can log onto it from outside, and access the folders. However they all need to be able to write as well; save files, move files, etc.
I have the permissions set for the workgroup to read/write on the clients root folder, but it only applies to that folder. Any folders underneath it dont take effect. And there are hundreds of folders and subfolders.
Obviously there must be an option so that i the permissions i set to the root clients folder are applied to ALL subfolders! How do i do it?!
    Please and thanks!

Server Admin>File Sharing>Share Points, Permissions tab, click on the gear icon and select "Propagate Permissions..."

  • What DVD (read write) media is the most reliable.

On a new Mac Pro, should I use DVD+RW or DVD-RW, and what brand.

Check out http://www.macsales.com optical drives and media section.
I have not had any issue with Verbatim +RW.
If you type "DVD " into the Search field above next to "Support" will take you to Apple Store where 20 pack Verbatim $19.95.
I know there use to be a site that delved into all things related to DVD media.

There are 2 major DVD formats, and 6 within those. DVD+ and DVD-. The DVD+ standard has advantages when it comes to video recording on TV DVD recorders. They can start recording faster, so it's much easier to put the disc in and hit record to write your favorite show to disc immediately. For PC data, there is very little difference between DVD+ and DVD-. DVD+ will most likely win the format 'war'.
DVD- is the DVD-forum approved standard, and it uses the regular DVD logo with Recordable and Rewritable. It's basically the same technology as CD-R and CD-RW.
Those are the two main formats, but there are several discs within those:
    DVD+R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 16X speed.
DVD-R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 8X speed.
DVD+RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 4X speed.
DVD-RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
    DVD+R DL - Dual-layer write-once media from the DVD+ standdard. 8.5Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
DVD-RAM - ReWriteable media from a subset of the DVD- standard. NOT common, and very expensive, but EXCELLENT for use as a large floppy disk drive. Only a few consumer drives write to DVD-RAM discs, mainly those made by LG.
If you want to record movies, you should be aware that DVD+R media is less compatible with TV DVD-players (especially older ones). Also, some PC DVD-ROM drives won't read DVD+R discs.

  • Help needed concerning the read write permission on audio.

I'm currently trying to edit a Voice over I recorded and whilst the Read/write permission is enabled on all the audio I keep getting the error message 'Read/write permission doesn't allow writing Result code = -61' when I try and add a simple fade out to the audio file. Could anyone help me stop this from happening.
    Thanks.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for your advice, I've recently got a new raid
hard drive system and this is the first time I've
used it for my logic projects. I have the permission
to read and write to the drive although I'm not the
owner, do you think this may be the problem?
    Hi Mark,
    You are very welcome.
I am pretty sure it's related to permissions or your new drive. I had similar issues. What is your drive named? I ask, as when my mac was shipped from factory it had two drives identically named. This caused similar issues until I renamed the second drive.
It shouldn't matter that you are not the owner as long as you have permission to read and write to the drive ... I think. Anyone else ... ?
Anyway ... next question ... check the name of the new drive.
    Cheers
    Dee

  • External DVD reader/writer?

im looking for a compatible DVD writer/reader with a normal tray (not slot loading). anyone know if a small and light one that would be good? possibly one that can be pwered off of the USB port on the unibody macbook pro alone? or FW800 port?

I'd recommend a Sony model, something like the DRX 840U. I does need it's own power supply however (most do).

  • Need help with read/write to MODBUS RTU registers in Labview 8.0

I’m trying to write and read the registers in G3800xx016. controlling temperatures and lightning.  Please look at the attached pdf file for this unit..
I have used Lookout for about three years, and it works fine.. Now I want to expand my system and try to use Labview 8.0
My temperature register start adress is 100 Hex  (256 dec) I read from Register with Function code 03.
This register have values from 0-255 witch mean in labview for me as unsigned byte U8
I read my temperature from the register like this: eks.: 40257 lets say value=5
Slave    FC       Start Adress     Byte     Value               CRC
    01        03        0100                02        0005                7847
This is the status received from the Modbus tester when I use null-modem connection..
I receive the same value if I use Modscan32
I have used null-modem cable to read out the values.
I have also PIR detectors that control movements and light of and on, and I read these starts at 40017.1
    01   03     0010     02
The register to switch on and of heating and lights starts at 404097.1  FC16
Values mention here is read from Lookout 5.0
I have tried examples and read for weeks about this, but everything stops when I try to use Labview 8.0    I can’t read any values from my Master unit, neither write to it, or read any values in Modbus testers when I use null-modem cable.. I have tried different baud rates in my serial connection and it works perfect in Lookout, but Not Labview..
I have even bought DSC module, but I can’t write to either com ports or Modbus testers..
Please anybody… is there anybody that can give me help with this??
Start address for for PIR detectors is 40017.1 (FC03)  and for writing bits for on of to light and heatsystem is 404097.1 (FC16)
I would be very happy for any idea that can give me some positive results…  Look at the attached pdf file.
Thanks.. and very best regards from
    Benjii…

Hi... and thanks for your answer..
Yes, I have downloaded the NI Modbus drivers.. I have downloaded that one + a lot of other things about Modbus..
I have also tried communication between lokout and labview true null-modem cable.. and it works..
I have tried several Modbus examples and I communicate with most of them with null-modem cable.
I write to the right registers as well, cause I use Modbus scanner to read the information..
I have used the same settings for serial communication as my Master device use, bust still I can't get any response..
There was an error message in one of my example from the Modbus INIT module.. Maybe I should try to set up a new connection using VISA ??
Maybe the problem is to INIT my serial port? I have tried restarting my computer after closing my system..  But still, I have the same problem..
I hope you can give me any idea...
Thanks again..  by the way.. is it possible to write and read directly to serial port with the DSC module??  If so.. how??
    Very best regards..
    Benjii..

  • Could a SMC or PRAM Reset Affect a Superdrive's CD and DVD Read/Write?

Hi. Would a SMC or PRAM reset make the Superdrive read CD and DVDs better (it mounts CD-RWs and DVD+RWs which is usually labels as untitled DVD but it can't seem to mount original disks that are in good condition like: Snow Leopard DVDs that came with this iMac, Grand Theft Auto IV, Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars)? Or SMS and PRAM resets are not related to Superdrive?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

The SMCreset does affect the superdrive but your condidion may be from dust/dirt in the DVD on the lens system. Mine is real sensitive to dirt and smudges on the actual DVD but occasional lens cleaning helps. You can get DVD lens cleaners (with the tiny brushes on the disk) from most vendors that carry the media.

  • Read/Write rights connecting NAS drive via USB

I made it. The AEBS is working with my external iomega hard drive, different users and an iTunes library with 130GB data. All files are shown correctly and I am having full access. Just one thing, which I can't handle actually: I connected the formatted harddrive to the AEBS, configured the users. I copied all files into the shared- and some into the user folder. When connecting the usb drive directly with the mac via usb, I don't have access to the folders (permission denied). Since I can't change the right when it's connected to the AEBS, how can I get access to my files with a direct connection? Just worried, in case that the AEBS makes problems, so that I can still access my files when connecting the hard drive directly to my mac.
    Thanks for advice!

I haven't dealt with this yet, but my guess is you might have to plug the drive back into the AEB and remove the Users and Passwords. Once you plug that drive into the AEB and setup security on it, that information, I would assume is used like File Vault. It's setup on the actual drive, not the AEB.
    Hope that helps,
    AL

  • What external read / write DVD drive is best for imac

I have just bought a 27" iMac computer that is not fitted with a DVD read write external drive. Any advice on what I should buy?

There is no "best for Mac."  "Different folks for different folks."  It's all about your personal preference.  Whichever one you decide to purchase, make sure you read all of the reviews.
I personally use a LaCie external burner drive.

  • Can TestStand open, read, write and close binary files?

From a TestStand sequence, I need to open, read, write and close binary files. Does TestStand support this capability?

    Christine -
In the past I have used the C/C++ Adapter to call directly into the CVI RTE functions. The CVI functions I have used are OpenFile, WriteFile and CloseFile. The functions are exported from the DLL as CVI_OpenFile, CVI_WriteFile, and CVI_CloseFile. I just had to make sure that on termination of the sequence, that the integer handle was properly released by calling the close function.
If you are using LabVIEW, you could call directly into the low level VIs to do a similar set of operations.
